1Then Jacob went on his journey and came to the land of the people of the east. (Nu 23:7; Jud 6:3)2As he looked, he saw a well in the field, and behold, three flocks of sheep lying beside it, for out of that well the flocks were watered. The stone on the well’s mouth was large,3and when all the flocks were gathered there, the shepherds would roll the stone from the mouth of the well and water the sheep, and put the stone back in its place over the mouth of the well.4Jacob said to them, “My brothers, where do you come from?” They said, “We are from Haran.” (Ge 27:43)5He said to them, “Do you know Laban the son of Nahor?” They said, “We know him.”6He said to them, “Is it well with him?” They said, “It is well; and see, Rachel his daughter is coming with the sheep!”7He said, “Behold, it is still high day; it is not time for the livestock to be gathered together. Water the sheep and go, pasture them.”8But they said, “We cannot until all the flocks are gathered together and the stone is rolled from the mouth of the well; then we water the sheep.”9While he was still speaking with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep, for she was a shepherdess. (Ex 2:16)10Now as soon as Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother’s brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother’s brother, Jacob came near and rolled the stone from the well’s mouth and watered the flock of Laban his mother’s brother.11Then Jacob kissed Rachel and wept aloud.12And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father’s kinsman, and that he was Rebekah’s son, and she ran and told her father. (Ge 13:8; Ge 14:14; Ge 14:16; Ge 24:28)13As soon as Laban heard the news about Jacob, his sister’s son, he ran to meet him and embraced him and kissed him and brought him to his house. Jacob told Laban all these things, (Ge 29:12)14and Laban said to him, “Surely you are my bone and my flesh!” And he stayed with him a month. (Ge 2:23; Ge 37:27; Jud 9:2; 2Sa 5:1; 2Sa 19:12; 1Ch 11:1)15Then Laban said to Jacob, “Because you are my kinsman, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what shall your wages be?”16Now Laban had two daughters. The name of the older was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.17Leah’s eyes were weak,[1] but Rachel was beautiful in form and appearance.18Jacob loved Rachel. And he said, “I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel.” (Ge 30:26; Ge 31:41; Ho 12:12)19Laban said, “It is better that I give her to you than that I should give her to any other man; stay with me.”20So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed to him but a few days because of the love he had for her. (Ge 29:18)21Then Jacob said to Laban, “Give me my wife that I may go in to her, for my time is completed.”22So Laban gathered together all the people of the place and made a feast. (Jud 14:10; Joh 2:1)23But in the evening he took his daughter Leah and brought her to Jacob, and he went in to her.24(Laban gave[2] his female servant Zilpah to his daughter Leah to be her servant.) (Ge 30:9)25And in the morning, behold, it was Leah! And Jacob said to Laban, “What is this you have done to me? Did I not serve with you for Rachel? Why then have you deceived me?”26Laban said, “It is not so done in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn.27Complete the week of this one, and we will give you the other also in return for serving me another seven years.” (Jud 14:12)28Jacob did so, and completed her week. Then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel to be his wife.29(Laban gave his female servant Bilhah to his daughter Rachel to be her servant.) (Ge 30:3)30So Jacob went in to Rachel also, and he loved Rachel more than Leah, and served Laban for another seven years. (Ge 29:20; Ge 31:41)
Jacob’s Children
31When the Lord saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb, but Rachel was barren. (Ge 30:22; De 21:15)32And Leah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Reuben,[3] for she said, “Because the Lord has looked upon my affliction; for now my husband will love me.” (Ge 31:42; Ex 3:7; Ex 4:31; De 26:7)33She conceived again and bore a son, and said, “Because the Lord has heard that I am hated, he has given me this son also.” And she called his name Simeon.[4]34Again she conceived and bore a son, and said, “Now this time my husband will be attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” Therefore his name was called Levi.[5] (Nu 18:2; Nu 18:4)35And she conceived again and bore a son, and said, “This time I will praise the Lord.” Therefore she called his name Judah.[6] Then she ceased bearing. (Ge 49:8; Mt 1:2)
1Apoi Iacov și‑a continuat călătoria[1] și s‑a dus în țara fiilor Răsăritului.2El s‑a uitat și iată că pe câmp era o fântână, iar acolo, lângă ea, se odihneau trei turme de oi, căci din acea fântână erau adăpate turmele. Pe gura fântânii era o piatră mare.3Atunci când toate turmele erau adunate acolo, păstorii rostogoleau piatra de la gura fântânii și adăpau oile. Apoi puneau piatra înapoi, la locul ei, pe gura fântânii.4Iacov i‑a întrebat: – Fraților, de unde sunteți? Ei au răspuns: – Din Haran.5El i‑a întrebat: – Îl cunoașteți pe Laban, nepotul lui Nahor? Ei au zis: – Îl cunoaștem.6Iacov i‑a întrebat: – Este sănătos? Ei au răspuns: – Este sănătos. Iată, Rahela, fiica lui, vine cu oile.7Atunci Iacov a zis: – Iată, mai este mult din zi; nu este timpul să fie adunate turmele. Adăpați oile, iar apoi duceți‑vă și pașteți‑le iarăși.8Ei au răspuns: – Nu putem până când nu se vor aduna toate turmele și păstorii vor rostogoli piatra de pe gura fântânii. Atunci vom adăpa oile.9În timp ce vorbea cu ei, a sosit Rahela cu oile tatălui ei, pentru că ea le păstorea.10Când a văzut‑o pe Rahela, fiica lui Laban, fratele mamei sale, și când a văzut turma lui Laban, Iacov s‑a apropiat de fântână, a rostogolit piatra de pe gura fântânii și a adăpat oile lui Laban, fratele mamei sale.11El i‑a dat sărutare Rahelei și a plâns.12Iacov i‑a spus Rahelei că este rudă cu tatăl ei și că este fiul Rebecăi. Atunci ea a alergat și l‑a înștiințat pe tatăl ei.13Când a auzit vestea despre Iacov, fiul surorii sale, Laban a alergat să‑l întâmpine. L‑a îmbrățișat, i‑a dat sărutare și l‑a adus în casa lui. Iacov i‑a istorisit lui Laban toate aceste lucruri.14Apoi Laban i‑a zis: „Cu siguranță tu ești os din oasele mele și carne din carnea mea!“ Și Iacov a stat la el o lună de zile.
Căsătoria lui Iacov cu fiicele lui Laban
15După aceea, Laban i‑a zis lui Iacov: – Să‑mi slujești degeaba doar pentru că ești rudă cu mine? Spune‑mi: care să‑ți fie plata?16Laban avea două fete. Numele celei mari era Lea, iar numele celei mici era Rahela.17Ochii Leei erau delicați[2], însă Rahela era frumoasă la chip și frumoasă la înfățișare.18Iacov o iubea pe Rahela, așa că i‑a răspuns lui Laban: – Îți voi sluji șapte ani pentru fiica ta cea mică, Rahela.19Laban a zis: – Mai bine să ți‑o dau ție, decât s‑o dau altui bărbat. Rămâi la mine.20Astfel, Iacov a slujit șapte ani pentru Rahela, dar aceștia i s‑au părut ca fiind doar câteva zile, datorită dragostei sale pentru ea.21După aceea, Iacov i‑a zis lui Laban: „Dă‑mi soția, pentru că s‑a împlinit vremea să intru la ea.“22Laban i‑a adunat pe toți oamenii din acel loc și le‑a dat un ospăț.23Seara, a luat‑o pe fiica sa, Lea, și a adus‑o la Iacov, iar el a intrat la ea[3]. (Ge 16:2)24Laban i‑a dat‑o ca roabă fiicei sale Lea, pe roaba sa Zilpa.25Când s‑a făcut dimineață, iată că cea de lângă el era Lea. Atunci Iacov i‑a zis lui Laban: – Ce mi‑ai făcut? Nu ți‑am slujit pentru Rahela? De ce m‑ai înșelat?26Laban a răspuns: – Aici, la noi, nu se obișnuiește să se dea cea mai tânără înaintea celei întâi născute.27Împlinește săptămâna[4] cu aceasta. Apoi ți‑o vom da și pe cealaltă pentru încă șapte ani de slujire.28Iacov a făcut astfel și a împlinit săptămâna cu Lea. Apoi Laban i‑a dat‑o de soție pe fiica sa, Rahela.29Laban i‑a dat‑o ca roabă fiicei sale Rahela, pe roaba sa Bilha.30Iacov a intrat la Rahela și a iubit‑o mai mult decât pe Lea. Apoi i‑a slujit lui Laban încă șapte ani.
Copiii lui Iacov
31DOMNUL a văzut că Lea nu era iubită și i‑a deschis pântecul. Însă Rahela a rămas stearpă.32Lea a rămas însărcinată și a născut un fiu căruia i‑a pus numele Ruben[5], deoarece a zis: „DOMNUL a văzut într-adevăr suferința mea. Acum, sigur soțul meu mă va iubi.“33Ea a rămas din nou însărcinată, a mai născut un fiu și a zis: „Pentru că DOMNUL a auzit că nu sunt iubită, mi l‑a dat și pe acesta!“ De aceea i‑a pus numele Simeon[6].34Ea a rămas din nou însărcinată, a mai născut un fiu și a zis: „De data aceasta soțul meu se va atașa de mine, pentru că i‑am născut trei fii.“ De aceea i‑a pus numele Levi[7].35Ea a rămas din nou însărcinată, a mai născut un fiu și a zis: „De data aceasta Îl voi lăuda pe DOMNUL.“ De aceea i‑a pus numele Iuda[8]. Apoi a încetat să mai nască.
