1Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord in the presence of Eli. And the word of the Lord was rare in those days; there was no frequent vision. (1Sa 2:11; 1Sa 2:18; 1Sa 3:21; Ps 74:9; Am 8:11)2At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his own place. (Ge 27:1; Ge 48:10; De 34:7; 1Sa 4:15)3The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was. (Ex 27:20; Le 24:2; 1Sa 1:9; 2Ch 13:11)4Then the Lord called Samuel, and he said, “Here I am!”5and ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call; lie down again.” So he went and lay down.6And the Lord called again, “Samuel!” and Samuel arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.”7Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.8And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy.9Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down, and if he calls you, you shall say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant hears.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.10And the Lord came and stood, calling as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant hears.”11Then the Lord said to Samuel, “Behold, I am about to do a thing in Israel at which the two ears of everyone who hears it will tingle. (2Ki 21:12; Jer 19:3)12On that day I will fulfill against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. (1Sa 2:30)13And I declare to him that I am about to punish his house forever, for the iniquity that he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God,[1] and he did not restrain them. (1Sa 2:12; 1Sa 2:17; 1Sa 2:22; 1Sa 2:23; 1Sa 3:12)14Therefore I swear to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be atoned for by sacrifice or offering forever.” (Isa 22:14)15Samuel lay until morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the Lord. And Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli.16But Eli called Samuel and said, “Samuel, my son.” And he said, “Here I am.”17And Eli said, “What was it that he told you? Do not hide it from me. May God do so to you and more also if you hide anything from me of all that he told you.” (Ru 1:17)18So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. And he said, “It is the Lord. Let him do what seems good to him.” (2Sa 10:12; Job 1:21; Job 2:10; Ps 39:9; Isa 39:8)19And Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. (1Sa 2:21; 1Sa 9:6)20And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established as a prophet of the Lord. (2Sa 3:10)21And the Lord appeared again at Shiloh, for the Lord revealed himself to Samuel at Shiloh by the word of the Lord. (Jos 18:1; 1Sa 3:1; 1Sa 3:4)

În zilele acelea, Cuvântul DOMNULUI era rar, iar vedeniile nu erau dese.2Într‑o noapte, Eli, care era acum aproape orb, stătea culcat în locul său obișnuit.3Candela lui Dumnezeu nu se stinsese încă[1], iar Samuel era culcat în Templul[2] DOMNULUI, unde se afla Chivotul lui Dumnezeu. (Ex 27:21)4DOMNUL l‑a chemat pe Samuel, iar acesta a zis: – Iată‑mă!5A alergat la Eli și a zis: – Iată‑mă, căci m‑ai chemat. Eli i‑a răspuns: – Nu te‑am chemat. Întoarce‑te și culcă‑te! El s‑a dus și s‑a culcat.6DOMNUL l‑a chemat din nou pe Samuel, iar acesta s‑a sculat, s‑a dus la Eli și a zis: – Iată‑mă, căci m‑ai chemat. Eli însă i‑a răspuns: – Nu te‑am chemat, fiule! Întoarce‑te și culcă‑te!7Samuel nu‑L cunoștea încă pe DOMNUL, iar Cuvântul DOMNULUI nu i se descoperise încă.8DOMNUL l‑a chemat pe Samuel din nou, pentru a treia oară. Samuel s‑a sculat, s‑a dus la Eli și i‑a zis: – Iată‑mă, căci m‑ai chemat. Atunci Eli a înțeles că DOMNUL îl cheamă pe tânăr.9Eli i‑a zis lui Samuel: – Du‑te și culcă‑te, iar dacă te va mai chema, să spui: „Vorbește, DOAMNE, căci robul Tău ascultă!“ Samuel a plecat și s‑a culcat la locul lui.10DOMNUL a venit, S‑a înfățișat și l‑a chemat ca și în celelalte ocazii: – Samuel! Samuel! Samuel a răspuns: – Vorbește, căci robul Tău ascultă!11Atunci DOMNUL i‑a zis lui Samuel: – Iată, sunt gata să fac în Israel un lucru care va răsuna în urechile oricui îl va auzi.12În ziua aceea, voi împlini împotriva lui Eli tot ceea ce am rostit cu privire la familia lui, de la început până la sfârșit.13I‑am spus că voi judeca familia lui pentru totdeauna din cauza nelegiuirii de care a avut cunoștință. Căci fiii săi au atras asupra lor blestemul, iar el nu i‑a oprit.14De aceea jur familiei lui Eli că nelegiuirea ei nu va fi niciodată ispășită prin jertfă sau prin dar.15Samuel a rămas culcat până dimineața. Apoi a deschis porțile Casei DOMNULUI. El se temea să‑i spună lui Eli vedenia,16dar Eli l‑a chemat pe Samuel și a zis: – Samuel, fiule! El a răspuns: – Iată‑mă!17Eli a zis: – Care este cuvântul pe care ți l‑a spus El? Te rog să nu ascunzi nimic de mine! Dumnezeu să Se poarte cu tine cu toată asprimea[3] dacă vei ascunde de mine ceva din tot ce ți‑a spus!18Samuel i‑a istorisit tot și n‑a ascuns nimic de el. Atunci Eli a zis: – Acesta este DOMNUL. El să facă ceea ce este bine în ochii Lui!19Samuel creștea, iar DOMNUL era cu el, nelăsând să cadă la pământ niciunul din cuvintele Lui.20Tot Israelul, de la Dan și până la Beer-Șeba[4], a recunoscut că Samuel a fost confirmat ca profet al DOMNULUI.21DOMNUL continua să Se arate în Șilo, descoperindu‑i‑Se acolo lui Samuel prin Cuvântul DOMNULUI.
