1After many days the word of the Lord came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, “Go, show yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain upon the earth.” (1Ki 17:1)2So Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samaria.3And Ahab called Obadiah, who was over the household. (Now Obadiah feared the Lord greatly, (1Ki 16:9)4and when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the Lord, Obadiah took a hundred prophets and hid them by fifties in a cave and fed them with bread and water.) (1Ki 18:13)5And Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the springs of water and to all the valleys. Perhaps we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, and not lose some of the animals.”6So they divided the land between them to pass through it. Ahab went in one direction by himself, and Obadiah went in another direction by himself.7And as Obadiah was on the way, behold, Elijah met him. And Obadiah recognized him and fell on his face and said, “Is it you, my lord Elijah?”8And he answered him, “It is I. Go, tell your lord, ‘Behold, Elijah is here.’”9And he said, “How have I sinned, that you would give your servant into the hand of Ahab, to kill me?10As the Lord your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent to seek you. And when they would say, ‘He is not here,’ he would take an oath of the kingdom or nation, that they had not found you. (1Ki 17:1)11And now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Behold, Elijah is here.”’12And as soon as I have gone from you, the Spirit of the Lord will carry you I know not where. And so, when I come and tell Ahab and he cannot find you, he will kill me, although I your servant have feared the Lord from my youth. (2Ki 2:16; Eze 3:12; Eze 3:14; Eze 8:3; Ac 8:39)13Has it not been told my lord what I did when Jezebel killed the prophets of the Lord, how I hid a hundred men of the Lord’s prophets by fifties in a cave and fed them with bread and water? (1Ki 18:4)14And now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Behold, Elijah is here”’; and he will kill me.”15And Elijah said, “As the Lord of hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today.” (1Ki 18:10)16So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him. And Ahab went to meet Elijah.17When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, “Is it you, you troubler of Israel?” (Jos 7:25; 1Ki 21:20)18And he answered, “I have not troubled Israel, but you have, and your father’s house, because you have abandoned the commandments of the Lord and followed the Baals. (1Ki 9:9; 1Ki 16:31; 2Ch 15:2; 2Ch 24:20)19Now therefore send and gather all Israel to me at Mount Carmel, and the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.” (Jos 19:26; 1Ki 16:33; 1Ki 18:22; 2Ki 3:13)
The Prophets of Baal Defeated
20So Ahab sent to all the people of Israel and gathered the prophets together at Mount Carmel.21And Elijah came near to all the people and said, “How long will you go limping between two different opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.” And the people did not answer him a word. (Jos 24:15; 2Ki 17:41; Mt 6:24)22Then Elijah said to the people, “I, even I only, am left a prophet of the Lord, but Baal’s prophets are 450 men. (1Ki 18:19; 1Ki 19:10; 1Ki 19:14)23Let two bulls be given to us, and let them choose one bull for themselves and cut it in pieces and lay it on the wood, but put no fire to it. And I will prepare the other bull and lay it on the wood and put no fire to it.24And you call upon the name of your god, and I will call upon the name of the Lord, and the God who answers by fire, he is God.” And all the people answered, “It is well spoken.” (1Ki 18:38)25Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first, for you are many, and call upon the name of your god, but put no fire to it.”26And they took the bull that was given them, and they prepared it and called upon the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying, “O Baal, answer us!” But there was no voice, and no one answered. And they limped around the altar that they had made.27And at noon Elijah mocked them, saying, “Cry aloud, for he is a god. Either he is musing, or he is relieving himself, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened.”28And they cried aloud and cut themselves after their custom with swords and lances, until the blood gushed out upon them. (Le 19:28; De 14:1)29And as midday passed, they raved on until the time of the offering of the oblation, but there was no voice. No one answered; no one paid attention. (Ex 29:39; Ex 29:41)30Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.” And all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the Lord that had been thrown down. (1Ki 19:10; 1Ki 19:14)31Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord came, saying, “Israel shall be your name,” (Ge 32:28; Ge 35:10; 2Ki 17:34)32and with the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord. And he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two seahs[1] of seed.33And he put the wood in order and cut the bull in pieces and laid it on the wood. And he said, “Fill four jars with water and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood.” (Ge 22:9; Le 1:7; Jud 6:20)34And he said, “Do it a second time.” And they did it a second time. And he said, “Do it a third time.” And they did it a third time.35And the water ran around the altar and filled the trench also with water.36And at the time of the offering of the oblation, Elijah the prophet came near and said, “O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word. (Ex 3:6; Nu 16:28; Jos 4:24; 1Sa 17:46; 1Ki 18:29)37Answer me, O Lord, answer me, that this people may know that you, O Lord, are God, and that you have turned their hearts back.”38Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. (Le 9:24; 1Ki 18:24)39And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said, “The Lord, he is God; the Lord, he is God.” (1Ki 18:24)40And Elijah said to them, “Seize the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape.” And they seized them. And Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon and slaughtered them there. (Jud 4:7; 2Ki 10:25)
The Lord Sends Rain
41And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink, for there is a sound of the rushing of rain.”42So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Mount Carmel. And he bowed himself down on the earth and put his face between his knees. (Jas 5:17)43And he said to his servant, “Go up now, look toward the sea.” And he went up and looked and said, “There is nothing.” And he said, “Go again,” seven times.44And at the seventh time he said, “Behold, a little cloud like a man’s hand is rising from the sea.” And he said, “Go up, say to Ahab, ‘Prepare your chariot and go down, lest the rain stop you.’” (Lu 12:54)45And in a little while the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode and went to Jezreel. (Jos 17:16)46And the hand of the Lord was on Elijah, and he gathered up his garment and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel. (Ex 12:11; Jos 17:16; 2Ki 3:15; 2Ki 4:29; 2Ki 9:1; Jer 1:17; Eze 1:3; Eze 3:14)

Poate că vom găsi iarbă ca să păstrăm caii și catârii în viață, astfel încât să nu trebuiască să omorâm vreunul din animale.“ (1Ki 2:37)6Apoi și‑au împărțit între ei teritoriul pe care urmau să‑l străbată: Ahab a plecat singur pe un drum, iar Obadia a plecat singur pe un alt drum.7În timp ce era pe drum, iată că l‑a întâlnit Ilie. El l‑a recunoscut, s‑a aruncat cu fața la pământ și l‑a întrebat: – Tu ești, stăpânul meu Ilie?8El i‑a răspuns: – Eu sunt. Du‑te și spune‑i stăpânului tău: „Iată, a venit Ilie.“9Obadia a zis: – Cu ce am păcătuit, de‑l dai pe robul tău pe mâna lui Ahab ca să fie omorât?10Viu este DOMNUL, Dumnezeul tău, că n‑a rămas niciun neam și niciun regat unde stăpânul meu să nu fi trimis să te caute. Iar când spuneau că nu ești acolo, punea regatul sau neamul acela să jure că nu te‑a găsit.11Acum tu zici: „Du‑te și spune‑i stăpânului tău: «Iată, a venit Ilie.»“12Iar apoi, când voi pleca de la tine, Duhul DOMNULUI te va duce pe nu știu unde! Astfel, dacă mă duc să‑i spun lui Ahab, iar el nu te va găsi, mă va ucide. Însă robul tău se teme de DOMNUL din tinerețea lui.13Nu i s‑a spus stăpânului meu ce am făcut când Izabela îi omora pe profeții DOMNULUI? Am ascuns o sută dintre profeții DOMNULUI, câte cincizeci în câte o peșteră, și le‑am asigurat pâine și apă.14Iar acum tu zici: „Du‑te și spune‑i stăpânului tău: «Iată, a venit Ilie.»“ Mă va ucide!15Ilie a zis: – Viu este DOMNUL Oștirilor[2], înaintea Căruia stau, că astăzi mă voi înfățișa înaintea lui Ahab. Ilie pe muntele Carmel
16Obadia a pornit să‑l întâmpine pe Ahab și să‑l înștiințeze. Apoi Ahab s‑a dus să‑l întâlnească pe Ilie.17Când Ahab l‑a văzut pe Ilie, i‑a zis: – Tu ești acela care‑l nenorocește pe Israel?18Ilie a răspuns: – Nu eu l‑am nenorocit pe Israel, ci tu și familia tatălui tău, prin faptul că ați părăsit poruncile DOMNULUI și te‑ai dus după BAAL[3]. (1Ki 16:31)19Strânge acum tot Israelul la mine, pe muntele Carmel, pe cei patru sute cincizeci de profeți ai lui BAAL și pe cei patru sute de profeți ai AȘEREI[4], care mănâncă la masa Izabelei. (1Ki 15:13)20Ahab a trimis după toți fiii lui Israel și i‑a strâns pe profeți la muntele Carmel.21Atunci Ilie s‑a apropiat de tot poporul și a zis: – Până când veți mai șchiopăta între două cârje[5]? Dacă DOMNUL este Dumnezeu, urmați‑L pe El, iar dacă BAAL este Dumnezeu, urmați‑l pe acesta! Poporul nu i‑a răspuns nimic.22Apoi Ilie a zis poporului: – Eu sunt singurul care am rămas dintre profeții DOMNULUI, iar profeții lui BAAL sunt în număr de patru sute cincizeci.23Să ni se dea doi tauri. Ei să‑și aleagă un taur, să‑l taie în bucăți și să‑l așeze pe lemnele de pe altar, dar să nu‑i dea foc. Iar eu voi pregăti celălalt taur și‑l voi așeza pe lemne, dar nu‑i voi da foc.24Apoi, voi să chemați numele dumnezeului vostru, iar eu voi chema Numele DOMNULUI. Dumnezeul care va răspunde prin foc, Acela este adevăratul Dumnezeu. Tot poporul a răspuns și a zis: – Propunerea este bună.25Ilie le‑a zis profeților lui BAAL: „Alegeți‑vă un taur și pregătiți‑l voi mai întâi, pentru că sunteți mai mulți. Apoi chemați numele dumnezeului vostru, dar să nu aprindeți voi focul.“26Ei au luat taurul oferit lor și l‑au pregătit. Apoi au chemat numele lui BAAL de dimineața până la amiază, zicând: „BAAL, răspunde‑ne!“ Dar nu s‑a auzit niciun glas. Nimeni n‑a răspuns, deși ei săreau în jurul altarului pe care‑l construiseră.27La amiază, Ilie și‑a bătut joc de ei, zicând: „Strigați mai tare, doar este dumnezeu! Poate că meditează sau este ocupat sau se află în călătorie! Poate că doarme și se va trezi!“28Ei au strigat mai tare și, după obiceiul lor, și‑au făcut tăieturi cu săbiile și cu sulițele până a început să le curgă sângele pe ei.29După ce a trecut miezul zilei, ei au profețit până când se aducea darul de mâncare, dar nu s‑a auzit niciun glas, niciun răspuns, niciun semn de luare aminte.30Atunci Ilie a zis întregului popor: – Apropiați‑vă de mine! Și tot poporul s‑a apropiat de el. Apoi el a refăcut altarul DOMNULUI, care fusese dărâmat.31Ilie a luat douăsprezece pietre, după numărul semințiilor urmașilor lui Iacov, cel căruia DOMNUL îi vorbise, zicând: „Numele tău va fi Israel!“32Cu aceste pietre, a zidit un altar în Numele DOMNULUI. Apoi a făcut un șanț în jurul altarului, în care încăpeau două măsuri[6] de sămânță.33A aranjat lemnele, a tăiat taurul în bucăți și l‑a așezat pe altar, deasupra lemnelor.34Apoi le‑a zis: – Umpleți patru urcioare cu apă și goliți‑le peste arderea‑de‑tot și peste lemne! Faceți lucrul acesta încă o dată! a zis el. Și ei l‑au făcut încă o dată. Faceți lucrul acesta și a treia oară! Iar ei l‑au făcut și a treia oară.35Apa curgea în jurul altarului și a umplut chiar și șanțul.36În timp ce se aducea darul de mâncare, profetul Ilie s‑a apropiat și a zis: „DOAMNE, Dumnezeul lui Avraam, Isaac și Israel, fă să se cunoască astăzi că Tu ești Dumnezeu în Israel, că eu sunt robul Tău și că am făcut toate aceste lucruri după porunca Ta.37Răspunde‑mi, DOAMNE! Răspunde‑mi, ca să cunoască acest popor că Tu, DOAMNE, ești Dumnezeu și că Tu le întorci inimile spre Tine!“38Atunci a căzut foc de la DOMNUL, a mistuit arderea‑de‑tot, lemnele, pietrele și pământul și a înghițit și apa care era în șanț.39Când a văzut tot poporul lucrul acesta, s‑au aruncat cu fața la pământ și au zis: „DOMNUL este Dumnezeu! DOMNUL este Dumnezeu!“40Ilie le‑a zis: – Prindeți‑i pe profeții lui BAAL! Niciunul dintre ei să nu scape! I‑au prins, iar Ilie i‑a coborât la râul Chișon și i‑a înjunghiat acolo.41Apoi Ilie i‑a zis lui Ahab: – Suie‑te, mănâncă și bea, căci se aude vuietul unei ploi puternice.42Ahab s‑a suit să mănânce și să bea, dar Ilie a urcat pe vârful Carmelului, s‑a plecat la pământ, și‑a așezat fața pe genunchi43și i‑a zis slujitorului său: – Te rog, suie‑te și uită‑te în direcția mării! El s‑a suit și s‑a uitat. Apoi a zis: – Nu este nimic! Ilie i‑a zis de șapte ori: – Du‑te din nou!44A șaptea oară, slujitorul a zis: – Iată, un nor mic cât o palmă de om se ridică din mare! Ilie a zis: – Suie‑te și spune‑i lui Ahab: „Pregătește‑ți carul și coboară‑te, ca să nu te prindă ploaia!“45Între timp cerul s‑a înnegrit de nori, a început să sufle vântul și s‑a pornit o ploaie puternică. Ahab s‑a urcat în car și s‑a dus la Izreel.46Mâna DOMNULUI a venit peste Ilie, care și‑a încins coapsele și a alergat înaintea lui Ahab până la intrarea în Izreel.
