Aaron’s Staff Buds

1 ^[1] The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to the people of Israel, and get from them staffs, one for each fathers’ house, from all their chiefs according to their fathers’ houses, twelve staffs. Write each man’s name on his staff, (Eze 37:16) 3 and write Aaron’s name on the staff of Levi. For there shall be one staff for the head of each fathers’ house. 4 Then you shall deposit them in the tent of meeting before the testimony, where I meet with you. (Ex 25:22) 5 And the staff of the man whom I choose shall sprout. Thus I will make to cease from me the grumblings of the people of Israel, which they grumble against you.” (Nu 16:5; Nu 16:11) 6 Moses spoke to the people of Israel. And all their chiefs gave him staffs, one for each chief, according to their fathers’ houses, twelve staffs. 8 On the next day Moses went into the tent of the testimony, and behold, the staff of Aaron for the house of Levi had sprouted and put forth buds and produced blossoms, and it bore ripe almonds. 9 Then Moses brought out all the staffs from before the Lord to all the people of Israel. And they looked, and each man took his staff. 10 And the Lord said to Moses, “Put back the staff of Aaron before the testimony, to be kept as a sign for the rebels, that you may make an end of their grumblings against me, lest they die.” (Nu 16:38; Nu 17:5; Heb 9:4) 11 Thus did Moses; as the Lord commanded him, so he did. 12 And the people of Israel said to Moses, “Behold, we perish, we are undone, we are all undone. 13 Everyone who comes near, who comes near to the tabernacle of the Lord, shall die. The budding of Aaron’s staff

1 ^[1] The Lord said to Moses, 2 ‘Speak to the Israelites and get twelve staffs from them, one from the leader of each of their ancestral tribes. Write the name of each man on his staff. 3 On the staff of Levi write Aaron’s name, for there must be one staff for the head of each ancestral tribe. 4 Place them in the tent of meeting in front of the ark of the covenant law, where I meet with you. 5 The staff belonging to the man I choose will sprout, and I will rid myself of this constant grumbling against you by the Israelites.’ 6 So Moses spoke to the Israelites, and their leaders gave him twelve staffs, one for the leader of each of their ancestral tribes, and Aaron’s staff was among them. 7 Moses placed the staffs before the Lord in the tent of the covenant law. 8 The next day Moses entered the tent and saw that Aaron’s staff, which represented the tribe of Levi, had not only sprouted but had budded, blossomed and produced almonds. 9 Then Moses brought out all the staffs from the Lord’s presence to all the Israelites. They looked at them, and each of the leaders took his own staff. 10 The Lord said to Moses, ‘Put back Aaron’s staff in front of the ark of the covenant law, to be kept as a sign to the rebellious. This will put an end to their grumbling against me, so that they will not die.’ 11 Moses did just as the Lord commanded him. 12 The Israelites said to Moses, ‘We shall die! We are lost, we are all lost! 13 Anyone who even comes near the tabernacle of the Lord will die. Are we all going to die?’

Aaron’s walking stick produces buds

Write the name of each man on his walking stick. 3 Write Aaron’s name on Levi’s walking stick. There must be one stick for the head of each of Israel’s tribes. 4 Put the walking sticks in the tent of meeting. Place them in front of the ark where the tablets of the covenant law are kept. That is where I meet with you. 5 The walking stick that belongs to the man I choose will begin to grow new shoots. The Israelites are never happy with what you do. I will put an end to what they are saying.’ 6 So Moses spoke to the Israelites. Their leaders gave him 12 walking sticks. They gave one for the leader of each of Israel’s tribes. Aaron’s walking stick was among them. 7 Moses put the sticks in front of the LORD in the tent where the tablets of the covenant law were kept. 8 The next day Moses entered the tent. He looked at Aaron’s walking stick. It stood for the tribe of Levi. Moses saw that it had begun to grow new shoots. It had also produced buds and flowers and almonds. 9 Then Moses brought out all the walking sticks from in front of the LORD. He brought them to all the Israelites. They looked at them. And each man took his own walking stick. 10 The LORD said to Moses, ‘Put Aaron’s walking stick back in front of the ark where the tablets of the covenant law are kept. The stick will be kept there as a warning to those who refuse to obey. They are never happy with what I do. Aaron’s walking stick will put an end to what they are saying. Then they will not die.’ 11 Moses did just as the LORD commanded him. 12 The Israelites said to Moses, ‘We’ll die! We are lost! All of us are lost! 13 Anyone who even comes near the LORD’s holy tent will die. Are all of us going to die?’

1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and take of every one of them a rod according to the house of their fathers, of all their princes according to the house of their fathers twelve rods: write thou every man' name upon his rod. 3 And thou shalt write Aaron' name upon the rod of Levi: for one rod shall be for the head of the house of their fathers. 4 And thou shalt lay them up in the tabernacle of the congregation before the testimony, where I will meet with you. 5 And it shall come to pass, that the man' rod, whom I shall choose, shall blossom: and I will make to cease from me the murmurings of the children of Israel, whereby they murmur against you. 6 And Moses spake unto the children of Israel, and every one of their princes gave him a rod apiece, for each prince one, according to their fathers'houses, even twelve rods: and the rod of Aaron was among their rods. 7 And Moses laid up the rods before the LORD in the tabernacle of witness. 8 And it came to pass, that on the morrow Moses went into the tabernacle of witness; and, behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi was budded, and brought forth buds, and bloomed blossoms, and yielded almonds. 9 And Moses brought out all the rods from before the LORD unto all the children of Israel: and they looked, and took every man his rod. 10 And the LORD said unto Moses, Bring Aaron' rod again before the testimony, to be kept for a token against the rebels; and thou shalt quite take away their murmurings from me, that they die not. 11 And Moses did so : as the LORD commanded him, so did he. 12 And the children of Israel spake unto Moses, saying, Behold, we die, we perish, we all perish. 13 Whosoever cometh any thing near unto the tabernacle of the LORD shall die: shall we be consumed with dying?

1 Darauf sprach der HERR zu Mose: 2 Sag zum Priester Eleasar, dem Sohn Aarons, er soll die Räucherpfannen aus der Brandglut herausnehmen - das Feuer streue weit auseinander -, denn sie sind geheiligt. 3 Die Räucherpfannen der Männer, die wegen ihrer Sünde ums Leben gekommen sind, soll man zu Blech hämmern und damit den Altar überziehen. Denn sie wurden vor den HERRN gebracht, deshalb sind sie heilig. Sie sollen für die Israeliten ein Zeichen sein. 4 Da nahm der Priester Eleasar die kupfernen Räucherpfannen, welche die im Feuer Umgekommenen dargebracht hatten, und hämmerte daraus einen Überzug für den Altar 5 - ein Erinnerungszeichen für die Israeliten, dass sich kein Unbefugter, der nicht zu den Nachkommen Aarons gehört, dem HERRN nähert, um vor ihm Räucherwerk zu verbrennen, damit es ihm nicht ergeht wie Korach und seiner Gemeinde -, so wie der HERR durch Mose zu ihm geredet hatte. 6 Am nächsten Tag murrte die ganze Gemeinde der Israeliten über Mose und Aaron; sie sagten: Ihr habt das Volk des HERRN getötet. 7 Als sich die Gemeinde gegen Mose und Aaron versammelte und sich dem Offenbarungszelt zuwandte, siehe, da hatte die Wolke das Zelt bedeckt und die Herrlichkeit des HERRN erschien. 8 Mose und Aaron gingen vor das Offenbarungszelt 9 und der HERR sprach zu Mose: 10 Zieht euch aus der Mitte dieser Gemeinde zurück, denn ich will ihr augenblicklich ein Ende bereiten. Da warfen sich Mose und Aaron auf ihr Gesicht nieder (Nu 16:4; Nu 16:21) 11 und Mose sagte zu Aaron: Nimm die Räucherpfanne, tu Feuer vom Altar hinein und leg Räucherwerk darauf; dann geh schnell zur Gemeinde und erwirke Sühne für sie! Denn der Zorn ist vom HERRN ausgegangen und die Plage hat begonnen. 12 Da nahm Aaron die Räucherpfanne, wie Mose gesagt hatte, und lief mitten in die Versammlung. Und siehe, die Plage hatte im Volk begonnen. Er legte das Räucherwerk in die Pfanne und erwirkte Sühne für das Volk. (Nu 25:6) 13 Er trat zwischen die Toten und die Lebenden und da hörte die Plage auf. 14 Durch die Plage waren vierzehntausendsiebenhundert Menschen gestorben, abgesehen von denen, die wegen Korach umgekommen waren. 15 Darauf kehrte Aaron zu Mose an den Eingang des Offenbarungszeltes zurück; die Plage hatte aufgehört. 16 Dann sprach der HERR zu Mose: 17 Rede zu den Israeliten und nimm jeweils von einer Großfamilie einen Stab, und zwar von den Anführern einer Großfamilie, im Ganzen also zwölf Stäbe, und schreib ihre Namen darauf! (Eze 37:16) 18 Auf den Stab Levis schreib den Namen Aaron; denn je ein Stab soll für das Haupt ihrer Großfamilien stehen. 19 Dann leg die Stäbe in das Offenbarungszelt vor das Bundeszeugnis, dort, wo ich euch begegne. 20 Und es wird geschehen: Der Mann, den ich erwähle, dessen Stab wird sprossen. So will ich vor mir das Murren zum Schweigen bringen, mit dem sie euch belästigen. 21 Mose redete zu den Israeliten. Darauf gaben ihm all ihre Stammesführer je einen Stab, je einen Stab für einen Anführer, entsprechend ihren Großfamilien: insgesamt zwölf Stäbe. Auch Aarons Stab war mitten unter ihren Stäben. 22 Mose legte die Stäbe im Zelt des Bundeszeugnisses vor dem HERRN nieder. 23 Als Mose am nächsten Tag zum Zelt des Bundeszeugnisses kam, siehe, da hatte der Stab Aarons für das Haus Levi gesprosst; er trieb Sprossen, blühte und trug Mandeln. 24 Da nahm Mose alle Stäbe von ihrem Platz vor dem HERRN weg und brachte sie zu allen Israeliten hinaus. Als sie die Stäbe sahen, nahm jeder den seinen. 25 Darauf sagte der HERR zu Mose: Trag den Stab Aarons zurück vor das Bundeszeugnis! Dort soll er aufbewahrt werden als ein Zeichen für alle Aufsässigen. Mach mir auf diese Weise ihrem Murren ein Ende, dann werden sie nicht sterben. (Nu 20:9; Heb 9:4) 26 Mose tat genauso, wie es ihm der HERR geboten hatte. So machte er es. 27 Die Israeliten aber sagten zu Mose: Sieh her, wir kommen um, wir gehen zugrunde, wir alle gehen zugrunde. 28 Jeder, der zu nahe an die Wohnung des HERRN kommt, stirbt. Sollen wir denn alle umkommen?
