The Allotment for Judah

1 The allotment for the tribe of the people of Judah according to their clans reached southward to the boundary of Edom, to the wilderness of Zin at the farthest south. (Nu 33:36; Nu 34:3) 2 And their south boundary ran from the end of the Salt Sea, from the bay that faces southward. (Jos 15:1) 3 It goes out southward of the ascent of Akrabbim, passes along to Zin, and goes up south of Kadesh-barnea, along by Hezron, up to Addar, turns about to Karka, (Nu 34:4; Jud 1:36) 4 passes along to Azmon, goes out by the Brook of Egypt, and comes to its end at the sea. This shall be your south boundary. (Nu 34:5; Jos 13:3; Jos 15:47) 5 And the east boundary is the Salt Sea, to the mouth of the Jordan. And the boundary on the north side runs from the bay of the sea at the mouth of the Jordan. (Jos 15:1) 6 And the boundary goes up to Beth-hoglah and passes along north of Beth-arabah. 7 And the boundary goes up to Debir from the Valley of Achor, and so northward, turning toward Gilgal, which is opposite the ascent of Adummim, which is on the south side of the valley. And the boundary passes along to the waters of En-shemesh and ends at En-rogel. (Jos 7:26; Jos 18:16; Jos 18:17; 2Sa 17:17; 1Ki 1:9)

8 Then the boundary goes up by the Valley of the Son of Hinnom at the southern shoulder of the Jebusite (that is, Jerusalem). And the boundary goes up to the top of the mountain that lies over against the Valley of Hinnom, on the west, at the northern end of the Valley of Rephaim. 9 Then the boundary extends from the top of the mountain to the spring of the waters of Nephtoah, and from there to the cities of Mount Ephron. Then the boundary bends around to Baalah (that is, Kiriath-jearim). (Jos 15:60; Jos 18:15; 1Ch 13:6) 10 And the boundary circles west of Baalah to Mount Seir, passes along to the northern shoulder of Mount Jearim (that is, Chesalon), and goes down to Beth-shemesh and passes along by Timnah. 11 The boundary goes out to the shoulder of the hill north of Ekron, then the boundary bends around to Shikkeron and passes along to Mount Baalah and goes out to Jabneel. Then the boundary comes to an end at the sea. (Jos 13:3; Jos 15:9) 12 And the west boundary was the Great Sea with its coastline. 13 According to the commandment of the Lord to Joshua, he gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh a portion among the people of Judah, Kiriath-arba, that is, Hebron (Arba was the father of Anak). (Jos 14:13; Jos 15:54) 14 And Caleb drove out from there the three sons of Anak, Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai, the descendants of Anak. (Nu 13:22; Jud 1:10; Jud 1:20) 15 And he went up from there against the inhabitants of Debir. Now the name of Debir formerly was Kiriath-sepher. Land allotted to Judah

1 The land allotted to the tribe of Judah, according to its clans, extended down to the territory of Edom, to the Desert of Zin in the extreme south. 2 Their southern boundary started from the bay at the southern end of the Dead Sea, 3 crossed south of Scorpion Pass, continued on to Zin and went over to the south of Kadesh Barnea. Then it ran past Hezron up to Addar and curved around to Karka. 4 It then passed along to Azmon and joined the Wadi of Egypt, ending at the Mediterranean Sea. This is their^[1] southern boundary. 5 The eastern boundary is the Dead Sea as far as the mouth of the Jordan. The northern boundary started from the bay of the sea at the mouth of the Jordan, 6 went up to Beth Hoglah and continued north of Beth Arabah to the Stone of Bohan son of Reuben. 7 The boundary then went up to Debir from the Valley of Achor and turned north to Gilgal, which faces the Pass of Adummim south of the gorge. It continued along to the waters of En Shemesh and came out at En Rogel. 8 Then it ran up the Valley of Ben Hinnom along the southern slope of the Jebusite city (that is, Jerusalem). From there it climbed to the top of the hill west of the Hinnom Valley at the northern end of the Valley of Rephaim. 9 From the hilltop the boundary headed towards the spring of the waters of Nephtoah, came out at the towns of Mount Ephron and went down towards Baalah (that is, Kiriath Jearim). 10 Then it curved westward from Baalah to Mount Seir, ran along the northern slope of Mount Jearim (that is, Kesalon), continued down to Beth Shemesh and crossed to Timnah. 11 It went to the northern slope of Ekron, turned towards Shikkeron, passed along to Mount Baalah and reached Jabneel. The boundary ended at the sea. 12 The western boundary is the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea. These are the boundaries around the people of Judah by their clans. 13 In accordance with the Lord’s command to him, Joshua gave to Caleb son of Jephunneh a portion in Judah – Kiriath Arba, that is, Hebron. (Arba was the forefather of Anak.) 14 From Hebron Caleb drove out the three Anakites – Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai, the sons of Anak. 15 From there he marched against the people living in Debir (formerly called Kiriath Sepher). 16 And Caleb said, ‘I will give my daughter Aksah in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher.’ 17 Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s brother, took it; so Caleb gave his daughter Aksah to him in marriage. 18 One day when she came to Othniel, she urged him^[2] to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, ‘What can I do for you?’ (Jud 1:14) 19 She replied, ‘Do me a special favour. 1 Land was given to the tribe of Judah, according to its family groups. It reached down to the territory of Edom. It went as far south as the Desert of Zin. 2 Judah’s border on the south started from the bay at the south end of the Dead Sea. 3 It went across to the south of Scorpion Pass. It continued on to Zin. It went over to the south of Kadesh Barnea. Then it ran past Hezron up to Addar. It curved around to Karka. 4 It then went along to Azmon. There it joined the Wadi of Egypt and ended at the Mediterranean Sea. That was the southern border of Judah. 5 The border on the east was the Dead Sea. It went north all the way to where the River Jordan enters the sea. The border on the north started at the bay of the Dead Sea. That’s where the River Jordan enters the sea. 6 From there it went up to Beth Hoglah. It continued north of Beth Arabah to the Stone of Bohan, the son of Reuben. 7 Then it went from the Valley of Achor up to Debir. It turned north to Gilgal. Gilgal faces the Pass of Adummim south of the valley. The border continued along to the springs of En Shemesh. It came to an end at En Rogel. 8 Then it ran up the Valley of Ben Hinnom. The share Caleb received was the city of Hebron. It was also called Kiriath Arba. Anak came from the family line of Arba. 14 Caleb drove three Anakites out of Hebron. Their names were Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai. They were from the family line of Anak. 15 From Hebron, Caleb marched out against the people living in Debir. It used to be called Kiriath Sepher. 16 Caleb said, ‘I will give my daughter Aksah to be married. She’ll be the wife of the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher.’ 17 Othniel captured it. So Caleb gave his daughter Aksah to him to be his wife. Othniel was the son of Kenaz. He was Caleb’s brother. 18 One day Aksah came to Othniel. She begged him to ask her father for a field. Judah’s territory went all the way to the Wadi of Egypt and the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. 48 Towns were also given to Judah in the central hill country. Here is a list of those towns. The total number of towns was two. They had villages near them. 61 Towns were also given to Judah in the desert. Here is a list of those towns. Beth Arabah, Middin, Sekakah, 62 Nibshan, the City of Salt and En Gedi. The total number of towns was six. Some of them had villages near them. 63 Judah couldn’t drive out the Jebusites who were living in Jerusalem. So they live there with the people of Judah to this day.

1 An den Stamm der Judäer fiel durch das Los, entsprechend seinen Sippen, der Anteil gegen die Grenze Edoms hin, südwärts der Wüste Zin zu gelegen, die im äußersten Süden ist. 2 Die Südgrenze Judas beginnt am Ende des Salzmeeres, an der Meereszunge, die sich nach Süden erstreckt, 3 verläuft dann südlich zur Skorpionensteige, zieht sich hinüber nach Zin, steigt südlich von Kadesch-Barnea hinauf, führt hinüber nach Hezron, steigt hinauf nach Addar und wendet sich nach Karka; 4 dann führt sie hinüber nach Azmon, geht hinaus zum Grenzbach Ägyptens und läuft am Meer aus. Das wird für euch die Südgrenze sein. 5 Die Ostgrenze bildet das Salzmeer bis zur Jordanmündung. Für die Nordseite beginnt die Grenze an der Meereszunge bei der Jordanmündung. 6 Die Grenze geht dann nach Bet-Hogla hinauf und läuft nördlich an Bet-Araba vorbei. Dann zieht sie sich hinauf zum Stein Bohans, des Sohnes Rubens. 7 Vom Tal Achor steigt sie empor nach Debir und wendet sich nordwärts nach Gelilot gegenüber der Steige von Adummim, die südlich des Bachtals liegt; dann führt sie hinüber zum Wasser von En-Schemesch und läuft hinaus zur Rogel-Quelle.^[1] 8 Von da an steigt die Grenze hinauf in das Ben-Hinnom-Tal südlich des Bergrückens der Jebusiter - das ist Jerusalem - und weiter empor zum Gipfel des Berges, der gegenüber dem Hinnom-Tal westwärts am nördlichen Rand der Rafaïter-Ebene liegt. 9 Vom Gipfel des Berges biegt die Grenze ab zur Neftoach-Quelle und führt hinaus zu den Städten des Berges Efron. Dann biegt sie ab nach Baala, das ist Kirjat-Jearim.^[2] 10 Von Baala wendet sich die Grenze nach Westen zum Berg Seïr, führt dann an der Nordflanke des Berges von Jearim, das ist Kesalon, vorbei, hinab nach Bet-Schemesch und hinüber nach Timna. 11 Dann verläuft sie hinaus zur Nordflanke von Ekron, biegt ab nach Schikkaron, geht hinüber zum Berg Baala und hinaus nach Jabneel. Die Grenze läuft aus am Meer. 12 Das große Meer und das Küstengebiet bilden die Westgrenze. Das ist das Gebiet der Judäer ringsum, entsprechend ihren Sippen. 13 Kaleb aber, dem Sohn Jefunnes, gab Josua einen Anteil mitten unter den Judäern, nach der Anweisung des HERRN an Josua, und zwar Kirjat-Arba - Arba war der Vater Anaks -, das ist Hebron. (Jos 14:13; Jud 1:10) 14 Kaleb vertrieb von dort die drei Anakiter Scheschai, Ahiman und Talmai, die Söhne Anaks. 15 Von dort zog er hinauf zu den Einwohnern von Debir. Debir hieß früher Kirjat-Sefer. 16 Und Kaleb sagte: Wer Kirjat-Sefer besiegt und einnimmt, dem gebe ich meine Tochter Achsa zur Frau. 17 Otniël, der Sohn des Kenas, eines Bruders Kalebs, nahm die Stadt ein und Kaleb gab ihm seine Tochter Achsa zur Frau. (Jud 3:9) 18 Als sie nun ankam, drängte sie ihn, von ihrem Vater ein Stück Land zu verlangen. Sie ließ sich vom Esel herabgleiten und Kaleb fragte sie: Was hast du? 19 Sie antwortete: Gib mir einen Segen! Wenn du mich schon ins Trockenland geschickt hast, dann gib mir auch Wasserstellen!
