Hosea 14

English Standard Version



1 Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God, for you have stumbled because of your iniquity. (Ho 3:5; Ho 6:1; Ho 12:6; Ho 13:9) 2 Take with you words and return to the Lord; say to him, “Take away all iniquity; accept what is good, and we will pay with bulls the vows[1] of our lips. (Ps 50:13; Ps 69:30; Ho 5:15; Heb 13:15) 3 Assyria shall not save us; we will not ride on horses; and we will say no more, ‘Our God,’ to the work of our hands. In you the orphan finds mercy.” (Ps 10:14; Isa 30:16; Isa 31:1; Ho 5:13; Ho 14:8) 4 I will heal their apostasy; I will love them freely, for my anger has turned from them. (Jer 3:22; Ho 6:1; Ho 11:1) 5 I will be like the dew to Israel; he shall blossom like the lily; he shall take root like the trees of Lebanon; (Ps 92:12; Isa 27:6; Isa 35:2; Ho 6:3) 6 his shoots shall spread out; his beauty shall be like the olive, and his fragrance like Lebanon. (Ps 52:8) 7 They shall return and dwell beneath my[2] shadow; they shall flourish like the grain; they shall blossom like the vine; their fame shall be like the wine of Lebanon. (Ps 91:1) 8 O Ephraim, what have I to do with idols? It is I who answer and look after you.[3] I am like an evergreen cypress; from me comes your fruit. (Isa 30:22; Ho 2:8; Ho 2:23; Ho 14:3; Joh 15:4) 9 Whoever is wise, let him understand these things; whoever is discerning, let him know them; for the ways of the Lord are right, and the upright walk in them, but transgressors stumble in them. 1 [1] Return, Israel, to the Lord your God. Your sins have been your downfall! 2 Take words with you and return to the Lord. Say to him: ‘Forgive all our sins and receive us graciously, that we may offer the fruit of our lips.[2] 3 Assyria cannot save us; we will not mount warhorses. We will never again say “Our gods” to what our own hands have made, for in you the fatherless find compassion.’ 4 ‘I will heal their waywardness and love them freely, for my anger has turned away from them. 5 I will be like the dew to Israel; he will blossom like a lily. Like a cedar of Lebanon he will send down his roots; 6 his young shoots will grow. His splendour will be like an olive tree, his fragrance like a cedar of Lebanon. 7 People will dwell again in his shade; they will flourish like the corn, they will blossom like the vine – Israel’s fame will be like the wine of Lebanon. 8 Ephraim, what more have I[3] to do with idols? I will answer him and care for him. I am like a flourishing juniper; your fruitfulness comes from me.’ 9 Who is wise? Let them realise these things. Who is discerning? Let them understand. The ways of the Lord are right; the righteous walk in them, but the rebellious stumble in them.

New International Reader’s Version



1 Israel, return to the LORD your God. Your sins have destroyed you! 2 Tell the LORD you are turning away from your sins. Return to him. Say to him, ‘Forgive us for all our sins. Please be kind to us. Welcome us back to you. Then our lips will offer you our praise. 3 Assyria can’t save us. We won’t trust in our war horses. Our own hands have made statues of gods. But we will never call them our gods again. We are like children whose fathers have died. But you show us your tender love.’ 4 Then the LORD will answer, ‘My people always wander away from me. But I will put an end to that. My anger has turned away from them. Now I will love them freely. 5 I will be like the dew to Israel. They will bloom like a lily. They will send their roots down deep like a cedar tree in Lebanon. 6 They will spread out like new branches. They will be as beautiful as an olive tree. They will smell as sweet as the cedar trees in Lebanon. 7 Once again my people will live in the safety of my shade. They will grow like corn. They will bloom like vines. And Israel will be as famous as wine from Lebanon. 8 Ephraim will have nothing more to do with other gods. I will answer the prayers of my people. I will take good care of them. I will be like a healthy juniper tree to them. All the fruit they bear will come from me.’ 9 If someone is wise, they will realise that what I’ve said is true. If they have understanding, they will know what it means. The ways of the LORD are right. People who are right with God live the way he wants them to. But those who refuse to obey him trip and fall.

1 O Israel, return unto the LORD thy God; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity. 2 Take with you words, and turn to the LORD: say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we render the calves of our lips. 3 Asshur shall not save us; we will not ride upon horses: neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, Ye are our gods: for in thee the fatherless findeth mercy. 4 I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him. 5 I will be as the dew unto Israel: he shall grow as the lily, and cast forth his roots as Lebanon. 6 His branches shall spread, and his beauty shall be as the olive tree, and his smell as Lebanon. 7 They that dwell under his shadow shall return; they shall revive as the corn, and grow as the vine: the scent thereof shall be as the wine of Lebanon. 8 Ephraim shall say , What have I to do any more with idols? I have heard him , and observed him: I am like a green fir tree. From me is thy fruit found. 9 Who is wise, and he shall understand these things ? prudent, and he shall know them? for the ways of the LORD are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein.

1 Samaria muss büßen, / weil es sich empört hat gegen seinen Gott. Umkommen werden sie durch das Schwert, / ihre kleinen Kinder werden zerschmettert, / ihre schwangeren Frauen aufgeschlitzt. (2Ki 15:16; Ho 10:14) 



2 Kehr um, Israel, zum HERRN, deinem Gott! / Denn du bist zu Fall gekommen durch deine Schuld. (Ho 5:5) 3 Nehmt Worte der Reue mit euch, / kehrt um zum HERRN und sagt zu ihm: Nimm alle Schuld hinweg / und nimm an, was gut ist: / Anstelle von Stieren bringen wir dir unsere Lippen dar.[1] 4 Assur kann uns nicht retten, / wir wollen nicht mehr auf Pferden reiten und zum Machwerk unserer Hände sagen wir nie mehr: Unser Gott. / Denn nur bei dir findet ein Waisenkind Erbarmen. (Isa 31:1; Ho 7:11) 5 Ich will ihre Untreue heilen / und sie aus freiem Willen wieder lieben. / Denn mein Zorn hat sich von Israel abgewandt. 6 Ich werde für Israel da sein wie der Tau, / damit es sprosst wie die Lotusblüte / und seine Wurzeln schlägt wie der Libanon. (Isa 35:1) 7 Seine Zweige sollen sich ausbreiten, / sodass seine Pracht wie die des Ölbaums wird / und sein Duft wie der des Libanon. (Ps 52:10) 8 Die in seinem Schatten wohnen, / bauen wieder Getreide an und sie sprossen wie der Weinstock, / dessen Wein so berühmt ist wie der Wein vom Libanon. 9 Efraim, was habe ich noch mit den Götzen zu tun? / Ich, ja, ich habe ihm geantwortet und achte auf ihn: Ich bin wie der grünende Wacholder, / an mir findest du reiche Frucht. 10 Wer weise ist, begreife dies alles, / wer klug ist, erkenne es. Ja, die Wege des HERRN sind gerade; / die Gerechten gehen auf ihnen, / die Treulosen aber kommen auf ihnen zu Fall. (De 32:4; Ps 107:43)
