Philippians 1

English Standard Version

1 Paul and Timothy, servants[1] of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the overseers[2] and deacons:[3] (Ac 20:28; 2Co 1:1; Col 1:2; 1Ti 3:8; 1Ti 3:12)2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. (Ro 1:7; 1Co 1:3)3 I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, (Ro 1:8; Ro 1:9; Eph 1:16; 2Ti 1:3)4 always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy,5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. (Ac 16:12; Php 2:12; Php 4:15)6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. (Ps 57:2; Ps 138:8; 1Co 1:8; 1Th 1:3; 1Th 5:24)7 It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace,[4] both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. (Ac 20:23; Ac 26:29; 2Co 7:3; Eph 3:1; Php 1:16; Php 4:14; Col 4:18; 2Ti 2:9; Phm 1:10; Phm 1:13)8 For God is my witness, how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus. (Ro 1:9; Ro 1:11; Ro 9:1; Ro 15:23; Php 4:1; 1Th 3:6; 2Ti 1:4)9 And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, (Col 1:9; Col 3:10; 1Th 3:12; 2Th 1:3; Phm 1:6)10 so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, (Ac 24:16; Php 1:6; 1Th 3:13; 1Th 5:23)11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. (Joh 15:4; Eph 1:12; Eph 1:14; Col 1:6; Col 1:10; Jas 3:18)12 I want you to know, brothers,[5] that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, (Php 1:25; 1Ti 4:15)13 so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard[6] and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ. (Lu 21:13; Ac 28:30; Php 1:7; 2Ti 2:9)14 And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word[7] without fear. (Ac 4:31)15 Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from good will. (2Co 11:13)16 The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. (1Co 9:17; Php 1:7)17 The former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely but thinking to afflict me in my imprisonment. (Php 2:3; Jas 3:14)18 What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice,19 for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance, (Ac 16:7; 2Co 1:11; Ga 3:5)20 as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. (Joe 2:27; Ac 4:13; Ro 5:5; Ro 14:8; 1Co 6:20; 2Ti 2:15)21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. (Ga 2:20)22 If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell.23 I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. (Joh 12:26; 2Co 5:8; 2Ti 4:6)24 But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account.25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith, (Ac 20:25; Ro 15:13; Php 1:12; Php 2:24)26 so that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus, because of my coming to you again. (2Co 1:14)27 Only let your manner of life be worthy[8] of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, (1Co 1:10; 1Co 16:13; Eph 4:1; Php 2:2; Php 3:20; Jud 1:3)28 and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God. (Ac 14:22; 2Th 1:5)29 For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, (Mt 5:12; Php 1:28)30 engaged in the same conflict that you saw I had and now hear that I still have. (Ac 16:19; Col 1:29; Col 2:1; 1Th 2:2; 1Ti 6:12; 2Ti 4:7; Heb 10:32)

Philippians 1

New International Version

1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all God’s holy people in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons[1]: (Ro 16:1; 1Ti 3:8; 1Ti 3:12)2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.3 I thank my God every time I remember you.4 In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now,6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.7 It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart and, whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God’s grace with me.8 God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.9 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight,10 so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ – to the glory and praise of God.12 Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters,[2] that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel.13 As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard[3] and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ.14 And because of my chains, most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lord and dare all the more to proclaim the gospel without fear.15 It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill.16 The latter do so out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defence of the gospel.17 The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains.18 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice,19 for I know that through your prayers and God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance.[4]20 I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.22 If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labour for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know!23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far;24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body.25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith,26 so that through my being with you again your boasting in Christ Jesus will abound on account of me.27 Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit,[5] striving together as one for the faith of the gospel28 without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved – and that by God.29 For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him,30 since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.

Philippians 1

King James Version

1 Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:2 Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.3 I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,4 Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy,5 For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now;6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:7 Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace.8 For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ.9 And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment;10 That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ;11 Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.12 But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel;13 So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other places;14 And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.15 Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will:16 The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds:17 But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel.18 What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.19 For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,20 According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.22 But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not.23 For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:24 Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.25 And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith;26 That your rejoicing may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my coming to you again.27 Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;28 And in nothing terrified by your adversaries: which is to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that of God.29 For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;30 Having the same conflict which ye saw in me, and now hear to be in me.

Philippians 1

New International Reader’s Version

1 We, Paul and Timothy, are writing this letter. We serve Christ Jesus. We are sending this letter to you, all God’s holy people in Philippi. You belong to Christ Jesus. We are also sending this letter to your leaders and deacons.2 May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.3 I thank my God every time I remember you.4 In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy.5 I am happy because you have joined me in spreading the good news. You have done so from the first day until now.6 God began a good work in you. And I am sure that he will carry it on until it is completed. That will be on the day Christ Jesus returns.7 It is right for me to feel this way about all of you. I love you with all my heart. I may be held by chains, or I may be standing up for the truth of the good news. Either way, all of you share in God’s grace together with me.8 God is my witness that I long for all of you. I love you with the love that Christ Jesus gives.9 I pray that your love will grow more and more. And let it be based on knowledge and understanding.10 Then you will be able to know what is best. Then you will be pure and without blame for the day that Christ returns.11 You will be filled with the fruit of right living produced by Jesus Christ. All these things bring glory and praise to God.12 Brothers and sisters, here is what I want you to know. What has happened to me has actually helped to spread the good news.13 One thing has become clear. I am being held by chains because I am a witness for Christ. All the palace guards and everyone else know it.14 And because I am a prisoner, most of the believers have become bolder in the Lord. They now dare even more to preach the good news without fear.15 It’s true that some preach about Christ because they are jealous. But others preach about Christ to help me in my work.16 The last group acts out of love. They know I have been put here to be a witness for the good news.17 But the others preach about Christ only to get ahead. They preach Christ for the wrong reasons. They think they can stir up trouble for me while I am being held by chains.18 But what does it matter? Here is the important thing. Whether for right or wrong reasons, Christ is being preached about. That makes me very glad. And I will continue to be glad.19 I know that you are praying for me. I also know that God will give me the Spirit of Jesus Christ to help me. So no matter what happens, I’m sure I will still be set free.20 I completely expect and hope that I won’t be ashamed in any way. I’m sure I will be brave enough. Now as always Christ will receive glory because of what happens to me. He will receive glory whether I live or die.21 For me, life finds all its meaning in Christ. Death also has its benefits.22 Suppose I go on living in my body. Then I will be able to carry on my work. It will bear a lot of fruit. But what should I choose? I don’t know!23 I can’t decide between the two. I long to leave this world and be with Christ. That is better by far.24 But it is more important for you that I stay alive.25 I’m sure of this. So I know I will remain with you. And I will continue with all of you to help you grow in your faith. I will also continue to help you be joyful in what you have been taught.26 I’m sure I will be with you again. Then you will be able to boast in Christ Jesus even more because of me.27 No matter what happens, live in a way that brings honour to the good news about Christ. Then I will know that you remain strong together in the one Spirit. I will know this if I come and see you or only hear about you. I will know that you work together as one person. I will know that you work to spread the teachings about the good news.28 So don’t be afraid in any way of those who oppose you. This will show them that they will be destroyed and that you will be saved. That’s what God will do.29 Here is what he has given you to do for Christ. You must not only believe in him. You must also suffer for him.30 You are going through the same struggle you saw me go through. As you have heard, I am still struggling.
