Matthew 7

English Standard Version

1 “Judge not, that you be not judged. (Lu 6:37; Lu 6:41; Ro 14:13; 1Co 4:5; Jas 5:9)2 For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. (Jud 1:7; Mr 4:24; Ro 2:1; Ro 2:3; Ro 14:10; Jas 2:13; Jas 4:11)3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? (Joh 8:7)4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye?5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.6 “Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you. (Pr 9:7; Pr 23:9; Mt 13:46; Mt 15:26; Php 3:2; Re 22:15)7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. (1Ch 28:9; 2Ch 15:2; Pr 8:17; Isa 55:6; Jer 29:13; Mt 18:19; Mt 21:22; Mr 11:24; Lu 11:9; Joh 14:13; Joh 15:7; Joh 15:16; Joh 16:23; Jas 1:5; Jas 1:17; 1Jo 3:22; 1Jo 5:14; Re 3:20)8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.9 Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? (Mt 4:3)10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent?11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! (Ge 6:5; Ge 8:21; Mt 7:7; Mt 12:34)12 “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets. (Mt 22:40; Lu 6:31)13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy[1] that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. (Lu 13:24)14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. (Ps 16:11; Mt 18:8; Lu 13:23; Joh 14:6)15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. (De 13:1; Jer 14:14; Jer 23:16; Eze 22:27; Mic 3:5; Mt 24:11; Mt 24:24; Mr 13:22; Lu 6:26; Joh 10:12; Ac 13:6; Ac 20:29; 2Pe 2:1; 1Jo 4:1)16 You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? (Lu 6:43; Jas 2:18)17 So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. (Mt 12:33)18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit.19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. (Mt 3:10)20 Thus you will recognize them by their fruits. (Mt 7:16)21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. (Ho 8:2; Mt 12:50; Lu 6:46; Joh 3:3; Joh 3:5; Ro 2:13; Jas 1:22)22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ (Nu 24:4; Mal 3:17; Mt 25:11; Mr 9:38; Lu 13:25; Joh 11:51; 1Co 13:2)23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ (Ps 5:5; Ps 6:8; Ps 101:4; Mt 7:22; Mt 10:33; Mt 13:41; Mt 25:41)24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. (Eze 13:10; Mt 25:2; Lu 6:47)25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. (Mt 7:24)27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”28 And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, (Mt 13:54; Mt 22:33; Mr 1:22; Mr 6:2; Mr 11:18; Lu 4:32; Ac 13:12)29 for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes. (Joh 7:46)

Matthew 7

New International Version

1 ‘Do not judge, or you too will be judged.2 For in the same way as you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.3 ‘Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?4 How can you say to your brother, “Let me take the speck out of your eye,” when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.6 ‘Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.7 ‘Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.9 ‘Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone?10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!12 So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.13 ‘Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.15 ‘Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.16 By their fruit you will recognise them. Do people pick grapes from thorn-bushes, or figs from thistles?17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognise them.21 ‘Not everyone who says to me, “Lord, Lord,” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.22 Many will say to me on that day, “Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?”23 Then I will tell them plainly, “I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!”24 ‘Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.’28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching,29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

Matthew 7

King James Version

1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.6 Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.9 Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.28 And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:29 For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

Matthew 7

New International Reader’s Version

1 ‘Do not judge other people. Then you will not be judged.2 You will be judged in the same way you judge others. You will be measured in the same way you measure others.3 ‘You look at the bit of sawdust in your friend’s eye. But you pay no attention to the piece of wood in your own eye.4 How can you say to your friend, “Let me take the bit of sawdust out of your eye”? How can you say this while there is a piece of wood in your own eye?5 You pretender! First take the piece of wood out of your own eye. Then you will be able to see clearly to take the bit of sawdust out of your friend’s eye.6 ‘Do not give holy things to dogs. Do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they might walk all over them. They might turn round and tear you to pieces.7 ‘Ask, and it will be given to you. Search, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened to you.8 Everyone who asks will receive. The one who searches will find. The door will be opened to the one who knocks.9 ‘Suppose your son asks for bread. Which of you will give him a stone?10 Or suppose he asks for a fish. Which of you will give him a snake?11 Even though you are evil, you know how to give good gifts to your children. How much more will your Father who is in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!12 In everything, do to others what you would want them to do to you. This is what is written in the Law and in the Prophets.13 ‘Enter God’s kingdom through the narrow gate. The gate is large and the road is wide that leads to ruin. Many people go that way.14 But the gate is small and the road is narrow that leads to life. Only a few people find it.15 ‘Watch out for false prophets. They come to you pretending to be sheep. But on the inside they are hungry wolves.16 You can tell each tree by its fruit. Do people pick grapes from bushes? Do they pick figs from thorns?17 In the same way, every good tree bears good fruit. But a bad tree bears bad fruit.18 A good tree can’t bear bad fruit. And a bad tree can’t bear good fruit.19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down. It is thrown into the fire.20 You can tell each tree by its fruit.21 ‘Not everyone who says to me, “Lord, Lord,” will enter the kingdom of heaven. Only those who do what my Father in heaven wants will enter.22 Many will say to me on that day, “Lord! Lord! Didn’t we prophesy in your name? Didn’t we drive out demons in your name? Didn’t we do many miracles in your name?”23 Then I will tell them clearly, “I never knew you. Get away from me, you who do evil!”24 ‘So then, everyone who hears my words and puts them into practice is like a wise man. He builds his house on the rock.25 The rain comes down. The water rises. The winds blow and beat against that house. But it does not fall. It is built on the rock.26 But everyone who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man. He builds his house on sand.27 The rain comes down. The water rises. The winds blow and beat against that house. And it falls with a loud crash.’28 Jesus finished saying all these things. The crowds were amazed at his teaching.29 That’s because he taught like one who had authority. He did not speak like their teachers of the law.
