1The men of Ephraim were called to arms, and they crossed to Zaphon and said to Jephthah, “Why did you cross over to fight against the Ammonites and did not call us to go with you? We will burn your house over you with fire.” (Jud 8:1)2And Jephthah said to them, “I and my people had a great dispute with the Ammonites, and when I called you, you did not save me from their hand.3And when I saw that you would not save me, I took my life in my hand and crossed over against the Ammonites, and the Lord gave them into my hand. Why then have you come up to me this day to fight against me?” (1Sa 19:5; 1Sa 28:21; Job 13:14; Ps 119:109)4Then Jephthah gathered all the men of Gilead and fought with Ephraim. And the men of Gilead struck Ephraim, because they said, “You are fugitives of Ephraim, you Gileadites, in the midst of Ephraim and Manasseh.” (1Sa 25:10)5And the Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan against the Ephraimites. And when any of the fugitives of Ephraim said, “Let me go over,” the men of Gilead said to him, “Are you an Ephraimite?” When he said, “No,” (Jud 3:28)6they said to him, “Then say Shibboleth,” and he said, “Sibboleth,” for he could not pronounce it right. Then they seized him and slaughtered him at the fords of the Jordan. At that time 42,000 of the Ephraimites fell. (Jud 12:5)7Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in his city in Gilead.[1]

And he judged Israel seven years.10Then Ibzan died and was buried at Bethlehem.11After him Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel, and he judged Israel ten years.12Then Elon the Zebulunite died and was buried at Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.13After him Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite judged Israel.14He had forty sons and thirty grandsons, who rode on seventy donkeys, and he judged Israel eight years. (Jud 5:10; Job 18:19; Isa 14:22; 1Ti 5:4)15Then Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite died and was buried at Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the hill country of the Amalekites.
1The Ephraimite forces were called out, and they crossed over to Zaphon. They said to Jephthah, ‘Why did you go to fight the Ammonites without calling us to go with you? We’re going to burn down your house over your head.’2Jephthah answered, ‘I and my people were engaged in a great struggle with the Ammonites, and although I called, you didn’t save me out of their hands.3When I saw that you wouldn’t help, I took my life in my hands and crossed over to fight the Ammonites, and the Lord gave me the victory over them. Now why have you come up today to fight me?’4Jephthah then called together the men of Gilead and fought against Ephraim. The Gileadites struck them down because the Ephraimites had said, ‘You Gileadites are renegades from Ephraim and Manasseh.’5The Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan leading to Ephraim, and whenever a survivor of Ephraim said, ‘Let me cross over,’ the men of Gilead asked him, ‘Are you an Ephraimite?’ If he replied, ‘No,’6they said, ‘All right, say “Shibboleth”.’ If he said, ‘Sibboleth’, because he could not pronounce the word correctly, they seized him and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. Forty-two thousand Ephraimites were killed at that time.7Jephthah led[1] Israel for six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in a town in Gilead.

Judges 12
King James Version
1And the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and went northward, and said unto Jephthah, Wherefore passedst thou over to fight against the children of Ammon, and didst not call us to go with thee? we will burn thine house upon thee with fire.2And Jephthah said unto them, I and my people were at great strife with the children of Ammon; and when I called you, ye delivered me not out of their hands.3And when I saw that ye delivered me not, I put my life in my hands, and passed over against the children of Ammon, and the LORD delivered them into my hand: wherefore then are ye come up unto me this day, to fight against me?4Then Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim: and the men of Gilead smote Ephraim, because they said, Ye Gileadites are fugitives of Ephraim among the Ephraimites, and among the Manassites.5And the Gileadites took the passages of Jordan before the Ephraimites: and it was so , that when those Ephraimites which were escaped said, Let me go over; that the men of Gilead said unto him, Art thou an Ephraimite? If he said, Nay;6Then said they unto him, Say now Shibboleth: and he said Sibboleth: for he could not frame to pronounce it right. Then they took him, and slew him at the passages of Jordan: and there fell at that time of the Ephraimites forty and two thousand.7And Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then died Jephthah the Gileadite, and was buried in one of the cities of Gilead.8And after him Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel.9And he had thirty sons, and thirty daughters, whom he sent abroad, and took in thirty daughters from abroad for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years.10Then died Ibzan, and was buried at Bethlehem.11And after him Elon, a Zebulonite, judged Israel; and he judged Israel ten years.12And Elon the Zebulonite died, and was buried in Aijalon in the country of Zebulun.13And after him Abdon the son of Hillel, a Pirathonite, judged Israel.14And he had forty sons and thirty nephews, that rode on threescore and ten ass colts: and he judged Israel eight years.15And Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite died, and was buried in Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the mount of the Amalekites.
1The troops of Ephraim were called out. The troops went across the River Jordan to Zaphon. When they arrived, they said to Jephthah, ‘You went to fight against the Ammonites. Why didn’t you ask us to go with you? We’re going to burn down your house over your head.’2Jephthah answered, ‘I and my people were taking part in a great struggle. We were at war with the Ammonites. I asked you for help. But you didn’t come to save me from their power.3I saw that you wouldn’t help. So I put my own life in danger. I went across the Jordan to fight against the Ammonites. The LORD helped me win the battle over them. So why have you come up today to fight against me?’4Then Jephthah called the men of Gilead together. They fought against Ephraim. The men of Gilead struck them down. The people of Ephraim had said, ‘You people of Gilead are nothing but deserters from Ephraim and Manasseh.’5The men of Gilead captured the places where people go across the River Jordan to get to Ephraim. Some men of Ephraim weren’t killed in the battle. When they arrived at the river, they would say, ‘Let us go across.’ Then the men of Gilead would ask each one, ‘Are you from Ephraim?’ Suppose he replied, ‘No’.6Then they would say, ‘All right. Say “Shibboleth”. ’ If he said ‘Sibboleth’, the way he said the word would give him away. He couldn’t say it correctly. So they would grab him. Then they would kill him at one of the places where people go across the Jordan. At that time, 42,000 men of Ephraim were killed.7Jephthah led Israel for six years. Then he died. He was buried in a town in Gilead. Jephthah was from the land of Gilead.
