1Then he commanded the steward of his house, “Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put each man’s money in the mouth of his sack, (Ge 42:25; Ge 43:16; Ge 44:4)2and put my cup, the silver cup, in the mouth of the sack of the youngest, with his money for the grain.” And he did as Joseph told him.3As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away with their donkeys.4They had gone only a short distance from the city. Now Joseph said to his steward, “Up, follow after the men, and when you overtake them, say to them, ‘Why have you repaid evil for good?[1] (Ge 44:1)5Is it not from this that my lord drinks, and by this that he practices divination? You have done evil in doing this.’” (Ge 30:27; Ge 44:15; 2Ki 21:6; 2Ch 33:6)6When he overtook them, he spoke to them these words.7They said to him, “Why does my lord speak such words as these? Far be it from your servants to do such a thing!8Behold, the money that we found in the mouths of our sacks we brought back to you from the land of Canaan. How then could we steal silver or gold from your lord’s house? (Ge 43:21)9Whichever of your servants is found with it shall die, and we also will be my lord’s servants.” (Ge 31:32; Ge 44:16)10He said, “Let it be as you say: he who is found with it shall be my servant, and the rest of you shall be innocent.”11Then each man quickly lowered his sack to the ground, and each man opened his sack.12And he searched, beginning with the eldest and ending with the youngest. And the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.13Then they tore their clothes, and every man loaded his donkey, and they returned to the city. (Ge 37:29)14When Judah and his brothers came to Joseph’s house, he was still there. They fell before him to the ground. (Ge 37:7; Ge 37:9; Ge 42:6; Ge 43:26; Ge 43:28)15Joseph said to them, “What deed is this that you have done? Do you not know that a man like me can indeed practice divination?” (Ge 44:5)16And Judah said, “What shall we say to my lord? What shall we speak? Or how can we clear ourselves? God has found out the guilt of your servants; behold, we are my lord’s servants, both we and he also in whose hand the cup has been found.” (Ge 37:18; Ge 44:9; Nu 32:23)17But he said, “Far be it from me that I should do so! Only the man in whose hand the cup was found shall be my servant. But as for you, go up in peace to your father.”18Then Judah went up to him and said, “Oh, my lord, please let your servant speak a word in my lord’s ears, and let not your anger burn against your servant, for you are like Pharaoh himself. (Ge 41:40; Ge 43:20; Ex 32:22)19My lord asked his servants, saying, ‘Have you a father, or a brother?’20And we said to my lord, ‘We have a father, an old man, and a young brother, the child of his old age. His brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother’s children, and his father loves him.’ (Ge 37:3; Ge 43:8; Ge 44:30)21Then you said to your servants, ‘Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes on him.’ (Ge 42:15; Ge 42:20; Ge 43:3; Ge 43:5)22We said to my lord, ‘The boy cannot leave his father, for if he should leave his father, his father would die.’ (Ge 44:31)23Then you said to your servants, ‘Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you shall not see my face again.’ (Ge 43:3)24“When we went back to your servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.25And when our father said, ‘Go again, buy us a little food,’ (Ge 43:2)26we said, ‘We cannot go down. If our youngest brother goes with us, then we will go down. For we cannot see the man’s face unless our youngest brother is with us.’27Then your servant my father said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me two sons. (Ge 46:19)28One left me, and I said, “Surely he has been torn to pieces,” and I have never seen him since. (Ge 37:33)29If you take this one also from me, and harm happens to him, you will bring down my gray hairs in evil to Sheol.’ (Ge 42:4; Ge 42:36; Ge 42:38)30“Now therefore, as soon as I come to your servant my father, and the boy is not with us, then, as his life is bound up in the boy’s life,31as soon as he sees that the boy is not with us, he will die, and your servants will bring down the gray hairs of your servant our father with sorrow to Sheol.32For your servant became a pledge of safety for the boy to my father, saying, ‘If I do not bring him back to you, then I shall bear the blame before my father all my life.’ (Ge 43:9)33Now therefore, please let your servant remain instead of the boy as a servant to my lord, and let the boy go back with his brothers.34For how can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? I fear to see the evil that would find my father.”
1Now Joseph gave these instructions to the steward of his house: ‘Fill the men’s sacks with as much food as they can carry, and put each man’s silver in the mouth of his sack.2Then put my cup, the silver one, in the mouth of the youngest one’s sack, along with the silver for his grain.’ And he did as Joseph said.3As morning dawned, the men were sent on their way with their donkeys.4They had not gone far from the city when Joseph said to his steward, ‘Go after those men at once, and when you catch up with them, say to them, “Why have you repaid good with evil?5Isn’t this the cup my master drinks from and also uses for divination? This is a wicked thing you have done.” ’6When he caught up with them, he repeated these words to them.7But they said to him, ‘Why does my lord say such things? Far be it from your servants to do anything like that!8We even brought back to you from the land of Canaan the silver we found inside the mouths of our sacks. So why would we steal silver or gold from your master’s house?9If any of your servants is found to have it, he will die; and the rest of us will become my lord’s slaves.’10‘Very well, then,’ he said, ‘let it be as you say. Whoever is found to have it will become my slave; the rest of you will be free from blame.’11Each of them quickly lowered his sack to the ground and opened it.12Then the steward proceeded to search, beginning with the eldest and ending with the youngest. And the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.13At this, they tore their clothes. Then they all loaded their donkeys and returned to the city.14Joseph was still in the house when Judah and his brothers came in, and they threw themselves to the ground before him.15Joseph said to them, ‘What is this you have done? Don’t you know that a man like me can find things out by divination?’16‘What can we say to my lord?’ Judah replied. ‘What can we say? How can we prove our innocence? God has uncovered your servants’ guilt. We are now my lord’s slaves – we ourselves and the one who was found to have the cup.’17But Joseph said, ‘Far be it from me to do such a thing! Only the man who was found to have the cup will become my slave. The rest of you, go back to your father in peace.’18Then Judah went up to him and said: ‘Pardon your servant, my lord, let me speak a word to my lord. Do not be angry with your servant, though you are equal to Pharaoh himself.19My lord asked his servants, “Do you have a father or a brother?”20And we answered, “We have an aged father, and there is a young son born to him in his old age. His brother is dead, and he is the only one of his mother’s sons left, and his father loves him.”21‘Then you said to your servants, “Bring him down to me so I can see him for myself.”22And we said to my lord, “The boy cannot leave his father; if he leaves him, his father will die.”23But you told your servants, “Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.”24When we went back to your servant my father, we told him what my lord had said.25‘Then our father said, “Go back and buy a little more food.”26But we said, “We cannot go down. Only if our youngest brother is with us will we go. We cannot see the man’s face unless our youngest brother is with us.”27‘Your servant my father said to us, “You know that my wife bore me two sons.28One of them went away from me, and I said, ‘He has surely been torn to pieces.’ And I have not seen him since.29If you take this one from me too and harm comes to him, you will bring my grey head down to the grave in misery.”30‘So now, if the boy is not with us when I go back to your servant my father, and if my father, whose life is closely bound up with the boy’s life,31sees that the boy isn’t there, he will die. Your servants will bring the grey head of our father down to the grave in sorrow.32Your servant guaranteed the boy’s safety to my father. I said, “If I do not bring him back to you, I will bear the blame before you, my father, all my life!”33‘Now then, please let your servant remain here as my lord’s slave in place of the boy, and let the boy return with his brothers.34How can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? No! Do not let me see the misery that would come on my father.’
Genesis 44
King James Version
1And he commanded the steward of his house, saying, Fill the men' sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man' money in his sack' mouth.2And put my cup, the silver cup, in the sack' mouth of the youngest, and his corn money. And he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken.3As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their asses.4And when they were gone out of the city, and not yet far off, Joseph said unto his steward, Up, follow after the men; and when thou dost overtake them, say unto them, Wherefore have ye rewarded evil for good?5Is not this it in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? ye have done evil in so doing.6And he overtook them, and he spake unto them these same words.7And they said unto him, Wherefore saith my lord these words? God forbid that thy servants should do according to this thing:8Behold, the money, which we found in our sacks'mouths, we brought again unto thee out of the land of Canaan: how then should we steal out of thy lord' house silver or gold?9With whomsoever of thy servants it be found, both let him die, and we also will be my lord' bondmen.10And he said, Now also let it be according unto your words: he with whom it is found shall be my servant; and ye shall be blameless.11Then they speedily took down every man his sack to the ground, and opened every man his sack.12And he searched, and began at the eldest, and left at the youngest: and the cup was found in Benjamin' sack.13Then they rent their clothes, and laded every man his ass, and returned to the city.14And Judah and his brethren came to Joseph' house; for he was yet there: and they fell before him on the ground.15And Joseph said unto them, What deed is this that ye have done? wot ye not that such a man as I can certainly divine?16And Judah said, What shall we say unto my lord? what shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are my lord' servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found.17And he said, God forbid that I should do so: but the man in whose hand the cup is found, he shall be my servant; and as for you, get you up in peace unto your father.18Then Judah came near unto him, and said, Oh my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord' ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant: for thou art even as Pharaoh.19My lord asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father, or a brother?20And we said unto my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loveth him.21And thou saidst unto thy servants, Bring him down unto me, that I may set mine eyes upon him.22And we said unto my lord, The lad cannot leave his father: for if he should leave his father, his father would die.23And thou saidst unto thy servants, Except your youngest brother come down with you, ye shall see my face no more.24And it came to pass when we came up unto thy servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.25And our father said, Go again, and buy us a little food.26And we said, We cannot go down: if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down: for we may not see the man' face, except our youngest brother be with us.27And thy servant my father said unto us, Ye know that my wife bare me two sons :28And the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces; and I saw him not since:29And if ye take this also from me, and mischief befall him, ye shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.30Now therefore when I come to thy servant my father, and the lad be not with us; seeing that his life is bound up in the lad' life;31It shall come to pass, when he seeth that the lad is not with us , that he will die: and thy servants shall bring down the gray hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to the grave.32For thy servant became surety for the lad unto my father, saying, If I bring him not unto thee, then I shall bear the blame to my father for ever.33Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren.34For how shall I go up to my father, and the lad be not with me? lest peradventure I see the evil that shall come on my father.
1Joseph told the manager of his house what to do. ‘Fill the men’s sacks with as much food as they can carry,’ he said. ‘Put each man’s money in his sack.2Then put my silver cup in the youngest one’s sack. Put it there along with the money he paid for his corn.’ So the manager did what Joseph told him to do.3When morning came, the men were sent on their way with their donkeys.4They hadn’t gone very far from the city when Joseph spoke to his manager. ‘Go after those men right away,’ he said. ‘Catch up with them. Say to them, “My master was good to you. Why have you paid him back by doing evil?5Isn’t this the cup my master drinks from? Doesn’t he also use it to find things out? You have done an evil thing.” ’6When the manager caught up with them, he told them what Joseph had said.7But they said to him, ‘Why do you say these things? We would never do anything like that!8We even brought back to you from Canaan the money we found in our sacks. So why would we steal silver or gold from your master’s house?9If you find out that any of us has the cup, he will die. And the rest of us will become your slaves.’10‘All right, then,’ he said. ‘As you wish. The one found to have the cup will become my slave. But the rest of you will not be blamed.’11Each of them quickly put his sack down on the ground and opened it.12Then the manager started to search. He began with the eldest and ended with the youngest. The cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.13When that happened, they were so upset they tore their clothes. Then all of them loaded their donkeys and went back to the city.14Joseph was still in the house when Judah and his brothers came in. They threw themselves down on the ground in front of him.15Joseph said to them, ‘What have you done? Don’t you know that a man like me has ways to find things out?’16‘What can we say to you?’ Judah replied. ‘What can we say? How can we prove we haven’t done anything wrong? God has shown you that we are guilty. We are now your slaves. All of us are, including the one found to have the cup.’17But Joseph said, ‘I would never do anything like that! Only the man found to have the cup will become my slave. The rest of you may go back to your father in peace.’18Then Judah went up to him. He said, ‘Please, sir. Let me speak a word to you. Don’t be angry with me, even though you are equal to Pharaoh himself.19You asked us, “Do you have a father or a brother?”20We answered, “We have an old father. A young son was born to him when he was old. His brother is dead. He’s the only one of his mother’s sons left. And his father loves him.”21‘Then you said to us, “Bring him down to me. I want to see him for myself.”22We said to you, “The boy can’t leave his father. If he does, his father will die.”23But you told us, “Your youngest brother must come down here with you. If he doesn’t, you won’t see my face again.”24So we went back to my father. We told him what you had said.25‘Then our father said, “Go back. Buy a little more food.”26But we said, “We can’t go down. We’ll only go if our youngest brother goes there with us. We can’t even see the man’s face unless our youngest brother goes with us.”27‘Your servant my father said to us, “You know that my wife had two sons by me.28One of them went away from me. And I said, ‘He must have been torn to pieces.’ I haven’t seen him since.29What if you take this one from me too and he is harmed? Then you would cause me to die as a sad old man. I would go down into the grave full of pain and suffering.”30‘So now, what will happen if the boy isn’t with us when I go back to my father? His life depends on the boy’s life.31When he sees that the boy isn’t with us, he’ll die. Because of us, he’ll go down into the grave as a sad old man.32I promised my father I would keep the boy safe. I said, “Father, I’ll bring him back to you. If I don’t, you can put the blame on me for the rest of my life.”33‘Now then, please let me stay here. Let me be your slave in place of the boy. Let the boy return with his brothers.34How can I go back to my father if the boy isn’t with me? No! Don’t let me see the pain and suffering that would come to my father.’
