Abimelech’s Conspiracy

1 Now Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem to his mother’s relatives and said to them and to the whole clan of his mother’s family, (Jud 8:31) 2 “Say in the ears of all the leaders of Shechem, ‘Which is better for you, that all seventy of the sons of Jerubbaal rule over you, or that one rule over you?’ Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.” (Ge 29:14; Jud 8:30; Jud 9:1) 3 And his mother’s relatives spoke all these words on his behalf in the ears of all the leaders of Shechem, and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech, for they said, “He is our brother.” (Jud 9:18) 4 And they gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of Baal-berith with which Abimelech hired worthless and reckless fellows, who followed him. 5 And he went to his father’s house at Ophrah and killed his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, seventy men, on one stone. But Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, for he hid himself. (Jud 6:24; 2Ki 11:1) 6 And all the leaders of Shechem came together, and all Beth-millo, and they went and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar at Shechem. 16 “Now therefore, if you acted in good faith and integrity when you made Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house and have done to him as his deeds deserved— (Jud 6:32; Jud 8:35; Pr 12:14; Isa 3:11)

17 for my father fought for you and risked his life and delivered you from the hand of Midian, 18 and you have risen up against my father’s house this day and have killed his sons, seventy men on one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his female servant, king over the leaders of Shechem, because he is your relative— (Jud 8:31; Jud 9:3; Jud 9:5) 19 if you then have acted in good faith and integrity with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you. The Downfall of Abimelech

22 Abimelech ruled over Israel three years. 23 And God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the leaders of Shechem, and the leaders of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech, (1Sa 16:14; 1Sa 18:10; 1Sa 19:9; Isa 33:1)

24 that the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid on Abimelech their brother, who killed them, and on the men of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to kill his brothers. (Jud 9:56; 1Ki 2:32; Es 9:25; Ps 7:16; Mt 23:35)

25 And the leaders of Shechem put men in ambush against him on the mountaintops, and they robbed all who passed by them along that way. And it was told to Abimelech. 26 And Gaal the son of Ebed moved into Shechem with his relatives, and the leaders of Shechem put confidence in him. 27 And they went out into the field and gathered the grapes from their vineyards and trod them and held a festival; and they went into the house of their god and ate and drank and reviled Abimelech. (Jud 9:4; Jud 9:46) 28 And Gaal the son of Ebed said, “Who is Abimelech, and who are we of Shechem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerubbaal, and is not Zebul his officer? Serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem; but why should we serve him? (Ge 34:2; Ge 34:6; 1Sa 25:10) 29 Would that this people were under my hand! Then I would remove Abimelech. I would say^[1] to Abimelech, ‘Increase your army, and come out.’” 30 When Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled. 31 And he sent messengers to Abimelech secretly,^[2] saying, “Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his relatives have come to Shechem, and they are stirring up^[3] the city against you. 32 Now therefore, go by night, you and the people who are with you, and set an ambush in the field. 33 Then in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, rise early and rush upon the city. And when he and the people who are with him come out against you, you may do to them as your hand finds to do.” (Ec 9:10) 34 So Abimelech and all the men who were with him rose up by night and set an ambush against Shechem in four companies. 35 And Gaal the son of Ebed went out and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city, and Abimelech and the people who were with him rose from the ambush. 36 And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, “Look, people are coming down from the mountaintops!” And Zebul said to him, “You mistake^[4] the shadow of the mountains for men.” (Jud 9:7; Jud 9:25) 37 Gaal spoke again and said, “Look, people are coming down from the center of the land, and one company is coming from the direction of the Diviners’ Oak.” 38 Then Zebul said to him, “Where is your mouth now, you who said, ‘Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him?’ Are not these the people whom you despised? Go out now and fight with them.” (Jud 9:28) 39 And Gaal went out at the head of the leaders of Shechem and fought with Abimelech. 40 And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him. And many fell wounded, up to the entrance of the gate. 41 And Abimelech lived at Arumah, and Zebul drove out Gaal and his relatives, so that they could not dwell at Shechem. 42 On the following day, the people went out into the field, and Abimelech was told. 43 He took his people and divided them into three companies and set an ambush in the fields. And he looked and saw the people coming out of the city. So he rose against them and killed them. 44 Abimelech and the company that was with him rushed forward and stood at the entrance of the gate of the city, while the two companies rushed upon all who were in the field and killed them. (Jud 20:37) 45 And Abimelech fought against the city all that day. He captured the city and killed the people who were in it, and he razed the city and sowed it with salt. (De 29:23; 2Ki 3:25) 46 When all the leaders of the Tower of Shechem heard of it, they entered the stronghold of the house of El-berith. (Jud 8:33; Jud 9:4; Jud 9:49) 47 Abimelech was told that all the leaders of the Tower of Shechem were gathered together. 48 And Abimelech went up to Mount Zalmon, he and all the people who were with him. And Abimelech took an axe in his hand and cut down a bundle of brushwood and took it up and laid it on his shoulder. And he said to the men who were with him, “What you have seen me do, hurry and do as I have done.” (Ps 68:14) 49 So every one of the people cut down his bundle and following Abimelech put it against the stronghold, and they set the stronghold on fire over them, so that all the people of the Tower of Shechem also died, about 1,000 men and women. (Jud 9:46) 50 Then Abimelech went to Thebez and encamped against Thebez and captured it. 51 But there was a strong tower within the city, and all the men and women and all the leaders of the city fled to it and shut themselves in, and they went up to the roof of the tower. 52 And Abimelech came to the tower and fought against it and drew near to the door of the tower to burn it with fire. 53 And a certain woman threw an upper millstone on Abimelech’s head and crushed his skull. (2Sa 11:21) 54 Then he called quickly to the young man his armor-bearer and said to him, “Draw your sword and kill me, lest they say of me, ‘A woman killed him.’” And his young man thrust him through, and he died. (1Sa 31:4) 55 And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, everyone departed to his home. 56 Thus God returned the evil of Abimelech, which he committed against his father in killing his seventy brothers. Abimelechs Königtum

1 Abimelech aber, der Sohn Jerubbaals, ging hin nach Sichem zu den Brüdern seiner Mutter und redete mit ihnen und mit dem ganzen Geschlecht des Hauses seiner Mutter und sprach: (Jud 8:31) 2 Redet doch vor den Ohren aller Herren von Sichem: Was ist euch besser, dass siebzig Männer, alle die Söhne Jerubbaals, über euch Herrscher seien oder dass ein Mann über euch Herrscher sei? Denkt auch daran, dass ich euer Gebein und Fleisch bin. (Jud 18:1) 3 Da redeten die Brüder seiner Mutter seinetwegen alle diese Worte vor den Ohren aller Herren von Sichem. Und ihr Herz neigte sich Abimelech zu; denn sie dachten: Er ist unser Bruder. 4 Und sie gaben ihm siebzig Silberstücke aus dem Tempel des Baal-Berit. Und Abimelech warb damit lose, leichtfertige Männer an, die ihm nachfolgten. (Jud 8:33) 5 Und er kam in das Haus seines Vaters nach Ofra und tötete seine Brüder, die Söhne Jerubbaals, siebzig Mann, auf einem Stein. Es blieb aber übrig Jotam, der jüngste Sohn Jerubbaals, denn er hatte sich versteckt. 6 Und es versammelten sich alle Herren von Sichem und alle Bewohner des Millo, gingen hin und machten Abimelech zum König bei der Eiche am Steinmal von Sichem. (Ge 35:4; Jos 24:26) 7 Als das dem Jotam angesagt wurde, ging er hin und stellte sich auf den Gipfel des Berges Garizim, erhob seine Stimme, rief und sprach zu ihnen: Höret mich, ihr Herren von Sichem, dass euch Gott auch höre. 8 Die Bäume gingen hin, um einen König über sich zu salben, und sprachen zum Ölbaum: Sei unser König! 9 Aber der Ölbaum antwortete ihnen: Soll ich meine Fettigkeit lassen, die Götter und Menschen an mir preisen, und hingehen, über den Bäumen zu schweben? 10 Da sprachen die Bäume zum Feigenbaum: Komm du und sei unser König! 11 Aber der Feigenbaum sprach zu ihnen: Soll ich meine Süßigkeit und meine gute Frucht lassen und hingehen, über den Bäumen zu schweben? 12 Da sprachen die Bäume zum Weinstock: Komm du und sei unser König! 13 Aber der Weinstock sprach zu ihnen: Soll ich meinen Wein lassen, der Götter und Menschen fröhlich macht, und hingehen, über den Bäumen zu schweben? 14 Da sprachen alle Bäume zum Dornbusch: Komm du und sei unser König! (2Ki 14:9) 15 Und der Dornbusch sprach zu den Bäumen: Ist’s wahr, dass ihr mich zum König über euch salben wollt, so kommt und bergt euch in meinem Schatten; wenn nicht, so gehe Feuer vom Dornbusch aus und verzehre die Zedern Libanons. 16 Habt ihr nun recht und redlich getan, dass ihr Abimelech zum König gemacht habt? Und habt ihr wohlgetan an Jerubbaal und an seinem Hause, und habt ihr ihm getan, wie er’s um euch verdient hat? 17 Denn mein Vater hat für euch gekämpft und sein Leben gewagt und euch aus der Hand Midians errettet. 18 Aber ihr habt euch heute gegen meines Vaters Haus aufgelehnt und seine Söhne getötet, siebzig Mann auf einem Stein, und habt Abimelech, seiner Magd Sohn, zum König über die Herren von Sichem gemacht, weil er euer Bruder ist. 19 Habt ihr nun heute recht und redlich gehandelt an Jerubbaal und an seinem Hause, so seid fröhlich über Abimelech, und er sei fröhlich über euch. 20 Wenn aber nicht, so gehe Feuer aus von Abimelech und verzehre die Herren von Sichem und die Bewohner des Millo, und gehe auch Feuer aus von den Herren von Sichem und von den Bewohnern des Millo und verzehre Abimelech. 21 Und Jotam floh vor seinem Bruder Abimelech und entwich und ging nach Beer und wohnte dort. 22 Als nun Abimelech drei Jahre über Israel geherrscht hatte, 23 sandte Gott einen bösen Geist zwischen Abimelech und die Herren von Sichem. Und die Herren von Sichem wurden Abimelech untreu, (1Sa 16:14; 1Sa 18:10; 1Sa 19:9) 24 damit der Frevel an den siebzig Söhnen Jerubbaals und ihr Blut käme auf Abimelech, ihren Bruder, der sie getötet hatte, und auf die Herren von Sichem, die ihm seine Hand dazu gestärkt hatten, dass er seine Brüder tötete. (Ge 9:6) 25 Und die Herren von Sichem legten einen Hinterhalt auf den Höhen der Berge und beraubten alle, die auf der Straße bei ihnen vorüberkamen. Und es wurde Abimelech angesagt. 26 Es kamen aber Gaal, der Sohn Ebeds, und seine Brüder und zogen in Sichem ein. Und die Herren von Sichem verließen sich auf ihn 27 und zogen hinaus aufs Feld und ernteten ihre Weinberge ab und kelterten und hielten ein Freudenfest und gingen in das Haus ihres Gottes, aßen und tranken und fluchten dem Abimelech. 28 Und Gaal, der Sohn Ebeds, sprach: Wer ist Abimelech und wer ist Sichem, dass wir ihm dienen sollten? Ist er nicht Jerubbaals Sohn und Sebul sein Vogt? Dienet den Leuten Hamors, des Vaters von Sichem! Warum sollten wir jenem dienen? (Ge 34:2) 29 Wollte Gott, das Volk wäre unter meiner Hand, so würde ich den Abimelech vertreiben und ihm sagen: Mehre dein Heer und zieh in den Kampf! 30 Als aber Sebul, der Stadthauptmann, die Worte Gaals, des Sohnes Ebeds, hörte, entbrannte sein Zorn, 31 und er sandte heimlich Boten zu Abimelech und ließ ihm sagen: Siehe, Gaal, der Sohn Ebeds, und seine Brüder sind nach Sichem gekommen und machen dir die Stadt aufrührerisch. 32 So mach dich nun auf bei Nacht, du und dein Volk, das bei dir ist, und lege einen Hinterhalt im Felde. (Jos 8:3) 33 Und am Morgen, wenn die Sonne aufgeht, mache dich auf und überfalle die Stadt. Und wenn er und das Volk, das bei ihm ist, gegen dich hinauszieht, so tu mit ihm, wie du es vermagst. 34 Abimelech machte sich auf bei Nacht und alles Volk, das bei ihm war, und sie legten einen Hinterhalt gegen Sichem mit vier Heerhaufen. 35 Und Gaal, der Sohn Ebeds, zog heraus und trat in das Stadttor. Aber Abimelech machte sich auf aus dem Hinterhalt samt dem Volk, das mit ihm war. 36 Als nun Gaal das Volk sah, sprach er zu Sebul: Siehe, da kommt Kriegsvolk von den Höhen des Gebirges herab. Sebul aber sprach zu ihm: Du siehst die Schatten der Berge für Leute an. 37 Gaal redete noch weiter und sprach: Siehe, Kriegsvolk kommt herab vom Nabel der Erde^[1], und ein Heerhaufe kommt daher auf dem Wege von der Zaubereiche. (Eze 38:12) 38 Da sprach Sebul zu ihm: Wo ist nun dein Maul, das da sagte: Wer ist Abimelech, dass wir ihm dienen sollten? Ist das nicht das Kriegsvolk, das du verachtet hast? Zieh nun hin und kämpfe mit ihm! 39 Gaal zog aus vor den Herren von Sichem her und kämpfte mit Abimelech. 40 Aber Abimelech jagte ihm nach, dass er vor ihm floh, und viele blieben erschlagen liegen bis an das Tor. 41 Und Abimelech blieb in Aruma. Sebul aber verjagte den Gaal und seine Brüder, sodass sie in Sichem nicht bleiben konnten. 42 Am Morgen aber ging das Volk heraus aufs Feld. Als man das Abimelech ansagte, 43 nahm er das Kriegsvolk, teilte es in drei Heerhaufen und legte einen Hinterhalt im Feld. Als er nun sah, dass das Volk aus der Stadt ging, erhob er sich gegen sie und schlug sie. 44 Abimelech und der Heerhaufe, der bei ihm war, überfielen sie und stellten sich am Stadttor auf. Die beiden andern Heerhaufen aber überfielen alle, die auf dem Felde waren, und schlugen sie. 45 So kämpfte Abimelech gegen die Stadt den ganzen Tag und eroberte sie und tötete das Volk, das darin war, und zerstörte die Stadt und streute Salz darauf. 46 Als das alle Herren der Burg von Sichem hörten, gingen sie in das Gewölbe des Tempels des El-Berit. (Jud 8:33) 47 Und als Abimelech hörte, dass sich alle Herren der Burg von Sichem versammelt hatten, 48 ging er auf den Berg Zalmon mit seinem ganzen Kriegsvolk, das bei ihm war, und nahm eine Axt in seine Hand und hieb einen Ast vom Baum und hob ihn auf und legte ihn auf seine Schulter und sprach zu dem Volk, das mit ihm war: Was ihr mich tun seht, das beeilt euch, auch zu tun. 49 Da hieb jeder vom Volk einen Ast ab, und sie folgten Abimelech und legten die Äste auf das Gewölbe und setzten über ihnen das Gewölbe in Brand, sodass auch alle in der Burg von Sichem starben, etwa tausend Männer und Frauen.

Abimelechs Ende

50 Abimelech aber zog nach Tebez, belagerte die Stadt und nahm sie ein. 51 Es war aber eine starke Burg mitten in der Stadt. Dahin flohen alle Männer und Frauen und alle Herren der Stadt, schlossen hinter sich zu und stiegen auf das Dach der Burg. 52 Da kam Abimelech zur Burg und kämpfte gegen sie und näherte sich dem Burgtor, um es mit Feuer zu verbrennen. 53 Aber eine Frau warf einen Mühlstein Abimelech auf den Kopf und zerschmetterte ihm den Schädel. 54 Da rief Abimelech eilends seinen Waffenträger herbei und sprach zu ihm: Zieh dein Schwert und töte mich, dass man nicht von mir sage: Eine Frau hat ihn erschlagen. Da durchstach ihn sein Waffenträger, und er starb. (1Sa 31:4; 2Sa 11:21) 55 Als aber die Israeliten sahen, dass Abimelech tot war, ging ein jeder heim. 56 So vergalt Gott dem Abimelech das Böse, das er seinem Vater angetan hatte, als er seine siebzig Brüder tötete. (Jud 5:1) 57 Desgleichen alle bösen Taten der Männer von Sichem vergalt ihnen Gott auf ihren Kopf, und es kam über sie der Fluch Jotams, des Sohnes Jerubbaals. (Jud 20:1)
