Samson’s Marriage

1 Samson went down to Timnah, and at Timnah he saw one of the daughters of the Philistines. (Ge 38:12; Jos 15:10; Jos 19:43; Heb 11:32)

2 Then he came up and told his father and mother, “I saw one of the daughters of the Philistines at Timnah. Now get her for me as my wife.” (Ge 34:4) 3 But his father and mother said to him, “Is there not a woman among the daughters of your relatives, or among all our people, that you must go to take a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines?” But Samson said to his father, “Get her for me, for she is right in my eyes.” (Ge 24:3; Ge 28:1; Jud 15:18; 1Sa 14:6; 1Sa 17:26; 1Sa 17:36; 1Sa 31:4; 2Sa 1:20)

4 His father and mother did not know that it was from the Lord, for he was seeking an opportunity against the Philistines. At that time the Philistines ruled over Israel. (Jos 11:20; Jud 13:1; Jud 15:11) 5 Then Samson went down with his father and mother to Timnah, and they came to the vineyards of Timnah. And behold, a young lion came toward him roaring. 6 Then the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon him, and although he had nothing in his hand, he tore the lion in pieces as one tears a young goat. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done. (Jud 3:10; Jud 14:19; Jud 15:14; 1Sa 11:6)

7 Then he went down and talked with the woman, and she was right in Samson’s eyes. 8 After some days he returned to take her. And he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion, and behold, there was a swarm of bees in the body of the lion, and honey. 9 He scraped it out into his hands and went on, eating as he went. And he came to his father and mother and gave some to them, and they ate. But he did not tell them that he had scraped the honey from the carcass of the lion. 10 His father went down to the woman, and Samson prepared a feast there, for so the young men used to do. 11 As soon as the people saw him, they brought thirty companions to be with him. 12 And Samson said to them, “Let me now put a riddle to you. If you can tell me what it is, within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothes, (Ge 29:27; Ge 45:22; 1Ki 10:1; 2Ki 5:5; 2Ki 5:22; Ps 78:2; Pr 1:6; Eze 17:2)

13 but if you cannot tell me what it is, then you shall give me thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothes.” And they said to him, “Put your riddle, that we may hear it.” 14 And he said to them, “Out of the eater came something to eat. Out of the strong came something sweet.” And in three days they could not solve the riddle. 15 On the fourth^[1] day they said to Samson’s wife, “Entice your husband to tell us what the riddle is, lest we burn you and your father’s house with fire. Have you invited us here to impoverish us?” (Jud 15:6; Jud 16:5) 16 And Samson’s wife wept over him and said, “You only hate me; you do not love me. You have put a riddle to my people, and you have not told me what it is.” And he said to her, “Behold, I have not told my father nor my mother, and shall I tell you?” (Jud 16:15) 17 She wept before him the seven days that their feast lasted, and on the seventh day he told her, because she pressed him hard. Then she told the riddle to her people. (Jud 16:16) 18 And the men of the city said to him on the seventh day before the sun went down, “What is sweeter than honey? What is stronger than a lion?” And he said to them, “If you had not plowed with my heifer, you would not have found out my riddle.” 19 And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon and struck down thirty men of the town and took their spoil and gave the garments to those who had told the riddle. In hot anger he went back to his father’s house. (Jud 1:18; Jud 14:6) 20 And Samson’s wife was given to his companion, who had been his best man. (Jud 15:2; Jud 15:6; Joh 3:29)

Simsons Rätsel

1 Simson ging hinab nach Timna und sah eine Frau in Timna unter den Töchtern der Philister. (Jos 19:43) 2 Und als er heraufkam, sagte er’s seinem Vater und seiner Mutter und sprach: Ich hab eine Frau gesehen in Timna unter den Töchtern der Philister; nehmt mir nun diese zur Frau. 3 Sein Vater und seine Mutter sprachen zu ihm: Ist denn nun keine Frau unter den Töchtern deiner Brüder und in deinem ganzen Volk, dass du hingehst und willst eine Frau nehmen von den Philistern, die unbeschnitten sind? Simson sprach zu seinem Vater: Nimm mir diese, denn sie gefällt meinen Augen. (Ge 34:14; Ex 34:16) 4 Aber sein Vater und seine Mutter wussten nicht, dass es von dem HERRN kam; denn er suchte einen Anlass gegen die Philister. Die Philister aber herrschten zu der Zeit über Israel. 5 So ging Simson hinab mit seinem Vater und seiner Mutter nach Timna. Und als sie kamen an die Weinberge von Timna, siehe, da kam ein junger Löwe brüllend ihm entgegen. 6 Und der Geist des HERRN geriet über ihn, und er zerriss ihn, wie man ein Böcklein zerreißt, und hatte doch gar nichts in seiner Hand. Er sagte aber seinem Vater und seiner Mutter nicht, was er getan hatte. (Jud 13:25; 1Sa 17:34) 7 Als er nun hinkam, redete er mit der Frau, und Simson hatte Gefallen an ihr. 8 Und nach einigen Tagen kam er wieder, um sie zu holen, und bog vom Wege ab, um nach dem Aas des Löwen zu sehen. Siehe, da war ein Bienenschwarm in dem Leibe des Löwen und Honig. 9 Und er nahm davon in seine Hände und aß im Gehen und kam zu seinem Vater und zu seiner Mutter und gab ihnen, dass sie auch aßen. Er sagte ihnen aber nicht, dass er den Honig aus dem Leibe des Löwen genommen hatte. 10 Und als sein Vater hinkam zu der Frau, machte Simson dort ein Hochzeitsgelage, wie es die jungen Leute zu tun pflegen. 11 Und als sie ihn sahen, gaben sie ihm dreißig Gesellen, die bei ihm sein sollten. 12 Simson aber sprach zu ihnen: Ich will euch ein Rätsel aufgeben. Wenn ihr mir das erratet und trefft in diesen sieben Tagen des Gelages, so will ich euch dreißig Hemden geben und dreißig Feierkleider. (Ge 29:27; 1Ki 10:1; Eze 17:2) 13 Könnt ihr’s aber nicht erraten, so sollt ihr mir dreißig Hemden und dreißig Feierkleider geben. Und sie sprachen zu ihm: Gib dein Rätsel auf, lass uns hören! 14 Er sprach zu ihnen: Speise ging aus vom Fresser und Süßigkeit vom Starken. Und sie konnten in drei Tagen das Rätsel nicht erraten. 15 Am vierten Tage sprachen sie zu Simsons Frau: Überrede deinen Mann, dass er uns des Rätsels Lösung sagt, oder wir werden dich und deines Vaters Haus mit Feuer verbrennen. Habt ihr uns hierher geladen, um uns arm zu machen? (Jud 16:5) 16 Da weinte Simsons Frau vor ihm und sprach: Du bist mir gram und hast mich nicht lieb. Du hast meinen Leuten ein Rätsel aufgegeben und hast mir’s nicht gesagt. Er aber sprach zu ihr: Siehe, ich hab’s meinem Vater und meiner Mutter nicht gesagt und dir sollte ich’s sagen? 17 Und sie weinte vor ihm die sieben Tage, die sie feierten; aber am siebenten Tage sagte er es ihr, denn sie drang in ihn. Sie aber sagte des Rätsels Lösung ihren Leuten weiter. (Jud 16:16) 18 Da sprachen die Männer der Stadt zu ihm am siebenten Tage, ehe die Sonne unterging: Was ist süßer als Honig? Was ist stärker als der Löwe? Aber er sprach zu ihnen: Wenn ihr nicht mit meinem Kalb gepflügt hättet, so hättet ihr mein Rätsel nicht getroffen. 19 Und der Geist des HERRN geriet über ihn, und er ging hinab nach Aschkelon und erschlug dreißig Mann unter ihnen und nahm ihre Gewänder und gab Feierkleider denen, die das Rätsel erraten hatten. Und sein Zorn entbrannte und er ging hinauf in seines Vaters Haus. (Jud 3:10) 20 Aber Simsons Frau wurde seinem Gesellen gegeben, der sein Brautführer gewesen war. (Jud 15:2)
