Jephthah Delivers Israel

1 Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty warrior, but he was the son of a prostitute. Gilead was the father of Jephthah. (Jud 6:12; 2Ki 5:1; Heb 11:32) 

2 And Gilead’s wife also bore him sons. And when his wife’s sons grew up, they drove Jephthah out and said to him, “You shall not have an inheritance in our father’s house, for you are the son of another woman.” 

3 Then Jephthah fled from his brothers and lived in the land of Tob, and worthless fellows collected around Jephthah and went out with him. (Jud 9:4; 1Sa 22:2; 2Sa 10:6; 2Sa 10:8) 

4 After a time the Ammonites made war against Israel. 

5 And when the Ammonites made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to bring Jephthah from the land of Tob. (Jud 11:3) 

6 And they said to Jephthah, “Come and be our leader, that we may fight against the Ammonites.” 

7 But Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “Did you not hate me and drive me out of my father’s house? Why have you come to me now when you are in distress?” 

8 And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “That is why we have turned to you now, that you may go with us and fight against the Ammonites and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.” (Jud 10:18) 

9 Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “If you bring me home again to fight against the Ammonites, and the Lord gives them over to me, I will be your head.” 

10 And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “The Lord will be witness between us, if we do not do as you say.” (Jer 42:5) 

11 So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and leader over them. And Jephthah spoke all his words before the Lord at Mizpah. (Jud 10:17; Jud 10:18; Jud 11:6; Jud 11:8; Jud 20:1; 1Sa 10:17; 1Sa 10:19; 1Sa 10:25; 1Sa 11:15; 1Sa 12:7) 

12 Then Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites and said, “What do you have against me, that you have come to me to fight against my land?” 

13 And the king of the Ammonites answered the messengers of Jephthah, “Because Israel on coming up from Egypt took away my land, from the Arnon to the Jabbok and to the Jordan; now therefore restore it peaceably.” (Ge 32:22; Nu 21:13; Nu 21:24) 

14 Jephthah again sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites 

15 and said to him, “Thus says Jephthah: Israel did not take away the land of Moab or the land of the Ammonites, (De 2:9; De 2:19) 

16 but when they came up from Egypt, Israel went through the wilderness to the Red Sea and came to Kadesh. (Nu 13:26; Nu 14:25; De 1:40) 

17 Israel then sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Please let us pass through your land,’ but the king of Edom would not listen. And they sent also to the king of Moab, but he would not consent. So Israel remained at Kadesh. (Nu 20:1; Nu 20:14; Nu 20:18; De 1:46) 

18 “Then they journeyed through the wilderness and went around the land of Edom and the land of Moab and arrived on the east side of the land of Moab and camped on the other side of the Arnon. But they did not enter the territory of Moab, for the Arnon was the boundary of Moab. (Nu 21:4; Nu 21:11; Nu 21:13; Nu 22:36; De 2:1) 

19 Israel then sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, king of Heshbon, and Israel said to him, ‘Please let us pass through your land to our country,’ (Nu 21:21; De 2:26) 

20 but Sihon did not trust Israel to pass through his territory, so Sihon gathered all his people together and encamped at Jahaz and fought with Israel. 

21 And the Lord, the God of Israel, gave Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they defeated them. So Israel took possession of all the land of the Amorites, who inhabited that country. 

22 And they took possession of all the territory of the Amorites from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the wilderness to the Jordan. 

23 So then the Lord, the God of Israel, dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel; and are you to take possession of them? 

24 Will you not possess what Chemosh your god gives you to possess? And all that the Lord our God has dispossessed before us, we will possess. (Nu 21:29; De 9:5; De 18:12; Jos 3:10; 1Ki 11:7) 

25 Now are you any better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever contend against Israel, or did he ever go to war with them? (Nu 22:2; Jos 24:9; Mic 6:5) 

26 While Israel lived in Heshbon and its villages, and in Aroer and its villages, and in all the cities that are on the banks of the Arnon, 300 years, why did you not deliver them within that time? (Nu 21:25; De 2:36) 

27 I therefore have not sinned against you, and you do me wrong by making war on me. The Lord, the Judge, decide this day between the people of Israel and the people of Ammon.” (Ge 16:5; Ge 18:25; Ge 31:53; 1Sa 24:12; 1Sa 24:15) 

28 But the king of the Ammonites did not listen to the words of Jephthah that he sent to him. 

Jephthah’s Tragic Vow

29 Then the Spirit of the Lord was upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh and passed on to Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he passed on to the Ammonites. (Jud 3:10) 

30 And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord and said, “If you will give the Ammonites into my hand, (Ge 28:20; 1Sa 1:11) 

31 then whatever comes out from the doors of my house to meet me when I return in peace from the Ammonites shall be the Lord’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.” (Le 27:2; 1Sa 1:28; Ps 66:13) 

32 So Jephthah crossed over to the Ammonites to fight against them, and the Lord gave them into his hand. 

33 And he struck them from Aroer to the neighborhood of Minnith, twenty cities, and as far as Abel-keramim, with a great blow. So the Ammonites were subdued before the people of Israel. (Eze 27:17) 

34 Then Jephthah came to his home at Mizpah. And behold, his daughter came out to meet him with tambourines and with dances. She was his only child; besides her he had neither son nor daughter. (Ex 15:20; Jud 10:17; Jud 11:11; 1Sa 18:6; Ps 68:25; Jer 31:4) 

35 And as soon as he saw her, he tore his clothes and said, “Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low, and you have become the cause of great trouble to me. For I have opened my mouth to the Lord, and I cannot take back my vow.” (Nu 30:2; Ec 5:4) 

36 And she said to him, “My father, you have opened your mouth to the Lord; do to me according to what has gone out of your mouth, now that the Lord has avenged you on your enemies, on the Ammonites.” 

37 So she said to her father, “Let this thing be done for me: leave me alone two months, that I may go up and down on the mountains and weep for my virginity, I and my companions.” 

38 So he said, “Go.” Then he sent her away for two months, and she departed, she and her companions, and wept for her virginity on the mountains. 

39 And at the end of two months, she returned to her father, who did with her according to his vow that he had made. She had never known a man, and it became a custom in Israel (Jud 11:31) 

40 that the daughters of Israel went year by year to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in the year.

1 Jeftah, der Gileaditer, war ein streitbarer Mann. Er war der Sohn einer Hure. Gilead hatte Jeftah gezeugt. 

2 Als aber die Frau Gileads ihm Söhne gebar und die Söhne der Frau groß wurden, stießen sie Jeftah aus und sprachen zu ihm: Du sollst nicht erben im Haus unseres Vaters, denn du bist der Sohn einer andern. (Ge 21:10) 

3 Da floh er vor seinen Brüdern und wohnte im Lande Tob. Und es sammelten sich bei Jeftah lose Leute und zogen mit ihm aus. (Jud 9:4; 1Sa 22:2) 

4 Und einige Zeit danach kämpften die Ammoniter mit Israel. 

5 Als nun die Ammoniter mit Israel kämpften, gingen die Ältesten von Gilead hin, um Jeftah aus dem Lande Tob zu holen, 

6 und sprachen zu Jeftah: Komm und sei unser Hauptmann, dass wir gegen die Ammoniter kämpfen. 

7 Aber Jeftah sprach zu den Ältesten von Gilead: Seid ihr es nicht, die mich hassen und aus meines Vaters Haus ausgestoßen haben? Und nun kommt ihr zu mir, weil ihr in Bedrängnis seid? 

8 Die Ältesten von Gilead sprachen zu Jeftah: Darum kommen wir nun wieder zu dir, damit du mit uns ziehst und uns hilfst, gegen die Ammoniter zu kämpfen, und unser Haupt seist über alle, die in Gilead wohnen. (Jud 10:18) 

9 Jeftah sprach zu den Ältesten von Gilead: Wenn ihr mich wieder holt, um gegen die Ammoniter zu kämpfen, und der HERR sie vor mir dahingibt, werde ich dann euer Haupt sein? 

10 Die Ältesten von Gilead sprachen zu Jeftah: Der HERR sei unser Zeuge, wenn wir nicht tun, wie du gesagt hast. 

11 So ging Jeftah mit den Ältesten von Gilead, und das Volk setzte ihn zum Haupt und Obersten über sich. Und Jeftah brachte alle seine Anliegen vor den HERRN in Mizpa. (Jud 10:17) 

12 Dann sandte Jeftah Boten zum König der Ammoniter und ließ ihm sagen: Was hast du mit mir zu schaffen, dass du zu mir kommst, um gegen mein Land zu kämpfen? 

13 Der König der Ammoniter antwortete den Boten Jeftahs: Weil Israel mein Land genommen hat, als sie aus Ägypten zogen, vom Arnon an bis an den Jabbok und bis an den Jordan, so gib mir’s nun in Frieden zurück. 

14 Jeftah aber sandte abermals Boten zum König der Ammoniter; 

15 die sprachen zu ihm: So spricht Jeftah: Israel hat kein Land weggenommen, weder den Moabitern noch den Ammonitern. (De 2:9; De 2:19) 

16 Denn als sie aus Ägypten heraufkamen, zog Israel durch die Wüste bis ans Schilfmeer und kam nach Kadesch. 

17 Da sandte Israel Boten zum König von Edom und sprach: Lass mich durch dein Land ziehen. Aber der König von Edom hörte nicht auf sie. Auch sandten sie zum König von Moab; der wollte auch nicht. So blieb Israel in Kadesch (Nu 20:14) 

18 und zog in der Wüste umher und umging das Land Edom und das Land Moab und kam von Sonnenaufgang her an das Land Moab. Und sie lagerten sich jenseits des Arnon und kamen nicht ins Gebiet von Moab; denn der Arnon ist die Grenze von Moab. (Nu 21:13) 

19 Und Israel sandte Boten zu Sihon, dem König der Amoriter, dem König zu Heschbon, und ließ ihm sagen: Lass uns durch dein Land ziehen bis an unsern Ort. (Nu 21:21) 

20 Aber Sihon traute Israel nicht und ließ es nicht durch sein Gebiet ziehen, sondern versammelte sein ganzes Kriegsvolk und lagerte sich bei Jahaz und kämpfte mit Israel. 

21 Der HERR aber, der Gott Israels, gab Sihon mit seinem ganzen Kriegsvolk in die Hand Israels, und sie erschlugen sie. So nahm Israel das ganze Land der Amoriter ein, die in jenem Land wohnten. 

22 Sie nahmen das ganze Gebiet der Amoriter ein vom Arnon bis an den Jabbok und von der Wüste bis an den Jordan. 

23 So hat nun der HERR, der Gott Israels, die Amoriter vertrieben vor seinem Volk Israel, und du willst ihr Land einnehmen? 

24 Du solltest das Land derer einnehmen, die dein Gott Kemosch vertreibt, uns dagegen das Land derer einnehmen lassen, die der HERR, unser Gott, vor uns vertrieben hat. (Nu 21:29) 

25 Meinst du, dass du ein besseres Recht hättest als Balak, der Sohn Zippors, der König von Moab? Hat dieser auch je mit Israel gerechtet oder gekämpft, (Nu 22:2; Jos 24:9) 

26 obwohl Israel dreihundert Jahre gewohnt hat in Heschbon und in Aroër und ihren Ortschaften und in allen Städten, die zu beiden Seiten des Arnon liegen? Warum habt ihr sie nicht mit Gewalt genommen in dieser Zeit? 

27 Ich habe mich nicht an dir versündigt, du aber tust so Böses an mir, dass du mit mir kämpfst. Der HERR, der da Richter ist, richte heute zwischen den Israeliten und den Ammonitern. 

28 Aber der König der Ammoniter hörte nicht auf die Worte Jeftahs, die er ihm sagen ließ. 

29 Da kam der Geist des HERRN auf Jeftah, und er zog durch Gilead und Manasse und nach Mizpe in Gilead, und von Mizpe in Gilead gegen die Ammoniter. (Jud 3:10; Jud 6:34) 

30 Und Jeftah gelobte dem HERRN ein Gelübde und sprach: Gibst du die Ammoniter in meine Hand, (2Sa 15:8) 

31 so soll, was mir aus meiner Haustür entgegengeht, wenn ich von den Ammonitern heil zurückkomme, dem HERRN gehören, und ich will’s als Brandopfer darbringen. (2Ki 3:27) 

32 So zog Jeftah gegen die Ammoniter in den Kampf. Und der HERR gab sie in seine Hand. 

33 Und er schlug sie mit gewaltigen Schlägen von Aroër an bis hin nach Minnit, zwanzig Städte, und bis nach Abel-Keramim. So wurden die Ammoniter gedemütigt vor den Israeliten. 

34 Als nun Jeftah nach Mizpa zu seinem Hause kam, siehe, da geht seine Tochter heraus ihm entgegen mit Pauken im Reigen. Sie war sein einziges Kind, und er hatte sonst keinen Sohn und keine Tochter. (Ex 15:20) 

35 Und als er sie sah, zerriss er seine Kleider und sprach: Ach, meine Tochter, wie beugst du mich und betrübst mich! Denn ich habe meinen Mund aufgetan vor dem HERRN und kann’s nicht widerrufen. (Nu 30:3) 

36 Sie aber sprach: Mein Vater, hast du deinen Mund aufgetan vor dem HERRN, so tu mit mir, wie dein Mund geredet hat, nachdem der HERR dich gerächt hat an deinen Feinden, den Ammonitern. 

37 Und sie sprach zu ihrem Vater: Du wollest mir das gewähren: Lass mir zwei Monate, dass ich hingehe auf die Berge und meine Jungfrauschaft beweine mit meinen Gespielinnen. 

38 Er sprach: Geh hin!, und ließ sie zwei Monate gehen. Da ging sie hin mit ihren Gespielinnen und beweinte ihre Jungfrauschaft auf den Bergen. 

39 Und nach zwei Monaten kam sie zurück zu ihrem Vater. Und er tat ihr, wie er gelobt hatte, und sie hatte nie einen Mann erkannt. Und es ward Brauch in Israel, (De 12:29) 

40 dass die Töchter Israel jährlich hingehen, zu klagen um die Tochter Jeftahs, des Gileaditers, vier Tage im Jahr.
