Israel Increases Greatly in Egypt

1 These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob, each with his household: (Ge 35:23; Ge 46:8) 2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, 3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, 4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. 5 All the descendants of Jacob were seventy persons; Joseph was already in Egypt. (Ge 46:27; De 10:22) 6 Then Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation. (Ge 50:26) 7 But the people of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, so that the land was filled with them. (Ge 46:3; De 26:5; Ac 7:17)

Pharaoh Oppresses Israel

8 Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. (Ac 7:18) 9 And he said to his people, “Behold, the people of Israel are too many and too mighty for us. (Ps 105:24) 10 Come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and, if war breaks out, they join our enemies and fight against us and escape from the land.” (Ps 83:3; Ps 105:25; Ac 7:19) 11 Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with heavy burdens. They built for Pharaoh store cities, Pithom and Raamses. (Ge 15:13; Ge 47:11; Ex 2:11; Ex 3:7; Ex 5:4; Ex 6:6; Ex 12:37; De 26:6; 2Ch 16:4; Ps 81:6)

12 But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And the Egyptians were in dread of the people of Israel. 13 So they ruthlessly made the people of Israel work as slaves (Ex 5:7) 14 and made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and brick, and in all kinds of work in the field. In all their work they ruthlessly made them work as slaves. (Ex 2:23; Ex 6:9; Nu 20:15; Ac 7:19; Ac 7:34)

15 Then the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah, 16 “When you serve as midwife to the Hebrew women and see them on the birthstool, if it is a son, you shall kill him, but if it is a daughter, she shall live.” 17 But the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but let the male children live. 18 So the king of Egypt called the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this, and let the male children live?” 19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.” 20 So God dealt well with the midwives. 22 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, “Every son that is born to the Hebrews^[1] you shall cast into the Nile, but you shall let every daughter live.” (Ge 41:1; Ac 7:19)

Israels Bedrückung in Ägypten

1 Dies sind die Namen der Söhne Israels, die mit Jakob nach Ägypten kamen; ein jeder kam mit seinem Hause: (Ge 46:8) 2 Ruben, Simeon, Levi, Juda, 3 Issachar, Sebulon, Benjamin, 4 Dan, Naftali, Gad, Asser. 5 Und alle zusammen, die von Jakob abstammen, waren siebzig an der Zahl. Josef aber war schon vorher in Ägypten. 6 Und Josef starb und alle seine Brüder und alle, die zu der Zeit gelebt hatten. (Ge 50:26) 7 Die Israeliten aber waren fruchtbar, und es wimmelte von ihnen, und sie mehrten sich und wurden überaus stark, sodass von ihnen das Land voll ward. (Ge 1:28; Ac 7:17) 8 Da kam ein neuer König auf in Ägypten, der wusste nichts von Josef 9 und sprach zu seinem Volk: Siehe, das Volk der Israeliten ist mehr und stärker als wir. 10 Wohlan, wir wollen sie mit List niederhalten, dass sie nicht noch mehr werden. Denn wenn ein Krieg ausbräche, könnten sie sich auch zu unsern Feinden schlagen und gegen uns kämpfen und aus dem Land hinaufziehen. 11 Und man setzte Fronvögte über sie, die sie mit schweren Diensten bedrücken sollten. Und sie bauten dem Pharao die Städte Pitom und Ramses als Vorratsstädte. (Ge 15:13; Ge 47:11) 12 Aber je mehr sie das Volk bedrückten, desto stärker mehrte es sich und breitete sich aus. Und es kam sie ein Grauen an vor den Israeliten. 13 Da zwangen die Ägypter die Israeliten mit Gewalt zum Dienst (Ge 15:13) 14 und machten ihnen ihr Leben sauer mit schwerer Arbeit in Ton und Ziegeln und mit mancherlei Frondienst auf dem Felde, mit all ihrer Arbeit, die sie ihnen mit Gewalt auferlegten. 15 Und der König von Ägypten sprach zu den hebräischen Hebammen, von denen die eine Schifra hieß und die andere Pua: 16 Wenn ihr den hebräischen Frauen bei der Geburt helft, dann seht auf das Geschlecht. Wenn es ein Sohn ist, so tötet ihn; ist’s aber eine Tochter, so lasst sie leben. 17 Aber die Hebammen fürchteten Gott und taten nicht, wie der König von Ägypten ihnen gesagt hatte, sondern ließen die Kinder leben. 18 Da rief der König von Ägypten die Hebammen und sprach zu ihnen: Warum tut ihr das, dass ihr die Kinder leben lasst? 19 Die Hebammen antworteten dem Pharao: Die hebräischen Frauen sind nicht wie die ägyptischen, denn sie sind kräftige Frauen. Ehe die Hebamme zu ihnen kommt, haben sie geboren. 20 Darum tat Gott den Hebammen Gutes. Und das Volk mehrte sich und wurde sehr stark. 21 Und weil die Hebammen Gott fürchteten, gab er auch ihnen Nachkommen. 22 Da gebot der Pharao seinem ganzen Volk und sprach: Alle Söhne, die geboren werden, werft in den Nil, aber alle Töchter lasst leben.
