Jacob Blesses Ephraim and Manasseh

1 After this, Joseph was told, “Behold, your father is ill.” So he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. 2 And it was told to Jacob, “Your son Joseph has come to you.” Then Israel summoned his strength and sat up in bed. 3 And Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty^[1] appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me, (Ge 17:1; Ge 28:13; Ge 28:19; Ge 35:6; Ge 35:9)

4 and said to me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will make of you a company of peoples and will give this land to your offspring after you for an everlasting possession.’ (Ge 17:8) 5 And now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine, as Reuben and Simeon are. 6 And the children that you fathered after them shall be yours. They shall be called by the name of their brothers in their inheritance. 7 As for me, when I came from Paddan, to my sorrow Rachel died in the land of Canaan on the way, when there was still some distance^[2] to go to Ephrath, and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).” (Ge 35:9) 8 When Israel saw Joseph’s sons, he said, “Who are these?” 9 Joseph said to his father, “They are my sons, whom God has given me here.” And he said, “Bring them to me, please, that I may bless them.” (Ge 27:4; Ge 33:5; Ge 49:25; Heb 11:21)

10 Now the eyes of Israel were dim with age, so that he could not see. So Joseph brought them near him, and he kissed them and embraced them. (Ge 27:1; Ge 27:27) 11 And Israel said to Joseph, “I never expected to see your face; and behold, God has let me see your offspring also.” (Ge 37:33; Ge 45:26) 12 Then Joseph removed them from his knees, and he bowed himself with his face to the earth. 13 And Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel’s left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel’s right hand, and brought them near him. 14 And Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it on the head of Ephraim, who was the younger, and his left hand on the head of Manasseh, crossing his hands (for Manasseh was the firstborn). 17 When Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand on the head of Ephraim, it displeased him, and he took his father’s hand to move it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head. (Ge 48:14) 18 And Joseph said to his father, “Not this way, my father; since this one is the firstborn, put your right hand on his head.” 19 But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know. He also shall become a people, and he also shall be great. Nevertheless, his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his offspring shall become a multitude^[4] of nations.” (Ge 48:17; Nu 1:33; Nu 1:35; Nu 2:19; Nu 2:21; De 33:17)

20 So he blessed them that day, saying, “By you Israel will pronounce blessings, saying, ‘God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh.’” Thus he put Ephraim before Manasseh. (Ru 4:11) 21 Then Israel said to Joseph, “Behold, I am about to die, but God will be with you and will bring you again to the land of your fathers. (Ge 46:4; Ge 50:24) 22 Moreover, I have given to you rather than to your brothers one mountain slope^[5] that I took from the hand of the Amorites with my sword and with my bow.” (Jos 24:32; Joh 4:5)

Jakobs Segen über Ephraim und Manasse

1 Danach wurde Josef gesagt: Siehe, dein Vater ist krank. Und er nahm mit sich seine beiden Söhne Manasse und Ephraim. 2 Da wurde Jakob angesagt: Siehe, dein Sohn Josef kommt zu dir. Und Israel machte sich stark und setzte sich auf im Bett 3 und sprach zu Josef: Der allmächtige Gott erschien mir zu Lus im Lande Kanaan und segnete mich (Ge 17:1; Ge 28:12; Ex 6:2) 4 und sprach zu mir: Siehe, ich will dich wachsen lassen und mehren und will dich zu einer Menge von Völkern machen und will dies Land zu eigen geben deinen Nachkommen für alle Zeit. (Ge 17:8; Ge 35:11) 5 So sollen nun deine beiden Söhne Ephraim und Manasse, die dir geboren sind in Ägyptenland, ehe ich hergekommen bin zu dir, mein sein. Ephraim und Manasse sollen für mich sein wie Ruben und Simeon. (Ge 41:50) 6 Die Nachkommen aber, die du nach ihnen zeugst, sollen dein sein und genannt werden nach dem Namen ihrer Brüder in deren Erbteil. 7 Und als ich aus Mesopotamien kam, starb mir Rahel im Land Kanaan auf der Reise, als es nur noch eine kleine Strecke Weges war bis Efrata, und ich begrub sie dort an dem Wege nach Efrata, das nun Bethlehem heißt. (Ge 35:19) 8 Und Israel sah die Söhne Josefs und sprach: Wer sind die? 9 Josef antwortete seinem Vater: Es sind meine Söhne, die mir Gott hier gegeben hat. Er sprach: Bringe sie her zu mir, dass ich sie segne. 10 Denn die Augen Israels waren schwach geworden vor Alter, und er konnte nicht mehr sehen. Und er ließ sie herzutreten und küsste und herzte sie. 11 Und Israel sprach zu Josef: Siehe, ich habe dein Angesicht gesehen, was ich nicht gedacht hätte, und siehe, Gott hat mich auch deine Söhne sehen lassen. 12 Und Josef nahm sie von seinem Schoß und verneigte sich vor ihm zur Erde. 13 Dann nahm sie Josef beide, Ephraim an seine rechte Hand gegenüber Israels linker Hand und Manasse an seine linke Hand gegenüber Israels rechter Hand, und brachte sie zu ihm. 14 Aber Israel streckte seine rechte Hand aus und legte sie auf Ephraims, des Jüngeren, Haupt und seine linke auf Manasses Haupt und kreuzte seine Arme, obwohl Manasse der Erstgeborene war. 15 Und er segnete Josef und sprach: Der Gott, vor dem meine Väter Abraham und Isaak gewandelt sind, der Gott, der mein Hirte gewesen ist mein Leben lang bis auf diesen Tag, (Ge 32:10; Ps 23:1) 16 der Engel, der mich erlöst hat von allem Übel, der segne die Knaben, dass durch sie mein und meiner Väter Abraham und Isaak Name fortlebe, dass sie wachsen und viel werden auf Erden. (Ge 32:25; Isa 41:14) 17 Als aber Josef sah, dass sein Vater die rechte Hand auf Ephraims Haupt legte, missfiel es ihm, und er fasste seines Vaters Hand, dass er sie von Ephraims Haupt auf Manasses Haupt wendete, 18 und sprach zu ihm: Nicht so, mein Vater, dieser ist der Erstgeborene; lege deine rechte Hand auf sein Haupt. 19 Aber sein Vater weigerte sich und sprach: Ich weiß wohl, mein Sohn, ich weiß wohl. Dieser soll auch ein Volk werden und wird groß sein, aber sein jüngerer Bruder wird größer als er werden, und sein Geschlecht wird eine Menge von Völkern werden. (Nu 1:33; Nu 1:35; De 33:17) 20 So segnete er sie an jenem Tage und sprach: Wer in Israel jemanden segnen will, der sage: Gott mache dich wie Ephraim und Manasse! Und so setzte er Ephraim vor Manasse. (Heb 11:21) 21 Und Israel sprach zu Josef: Siehe, ich sterbe; aber Gott wird mit euch sein und wird euch zurückbringen in das Land eurer Väter. 22 Ich gebe dir Sichem als Vorzug vor deinen Brüdern, das ich mit meinem Schwert und Bogen aus der Hand der Amoriter genommen habe. (Ge 34:1; Jos 24:30)

Jacob bénit les deux fils de Joseph

1 Après cela, on vint dire à Joseph: «Ton père est malade.» Il prit avec lui ses deux fils Manassé et Ephraïm. 2 On avertit Jacob, on lui dit: «Voici ton fils Joseph qui vient vers toi.» Israël rassembla ses forces et s'assit sur son lit. 3 Jacob dit à Joseph: «Le Dieu tout-puissant m'est apparu à Luz, dans le pays de Canaan, et il m'a béni. 4 Il m'a dit: ‘Je te donnerai des enfants, je rendrai tes descendants nombreux et je ferai sortir de toi tout un groupe de peuples. Je donnerai ce pays à ta descendance après toi pour qu'elle le possède toujours.’ 5 Désormais, les deux fils qui te sont nés en Egypte avant mon arrivée vers toi en Egypte seront les miens: Ephraïm et Manassé seront mes fils, tout comme Ruben et Siméon. 6 Quant aux enfants que tu as eus après eux, ils resteront les tiens. Ils seront associés à leurs frères dans leur héritage. 7 A mon retour de Paddan, Rachel est morte en route près de moi dans le pays de Canaan, à une certaine distance d'Ephrata. C'est là que je l'ai enterrée, sur le chemin d'Ephrata, c'est-à-dire Bethléhem.» 8 Puis Israël regarda les fils de Joseph et demanda: «Qui sont ceux-ci?» 9 Joseph répondit à son père: «Ce sont mes fils. Dieu me les a donnés ici.» Israël dit: «Fais-les approcher de moi pour que je les bénisse.» 10 La vue d'Israël avait baissé à cause de la vieillesse, il ne voyait plus bien. Joseph les fit approcher de lui et Israël les embrassa et les étreignit tendrement. 11 Israël dit à Joseph: «Je ne pensais pas revoir ton visage et voici que Dieu me fait même voir ta descendance!» 12 Joseph les retira des genoux de son père et se prosterna jusqu'à terre devant lui. 13 Puis il les prit tous les deux par la main: il tint Ephraïm de la main droite, de telle sorte qu'il était à gauche d'Israël, et Manassé de la main gauche, de telle sorte qu'il était à droite d'Israël, et il les fit approcher de lui. 14 Israël tendit sa main droite et la posa sur la tête d'Ephraïm, qui était le plus jeune, et il posa sa main gauche sur la tête de Manassé. Ce fut intentionnellement qu'il posa ses mains ainsi, car Manassé était l'aîné. 15 Il bénit Joseph et dit: «Que le Dieu devant lequel ont marché mes pères Abraham et Isaac, le Dieu qui a pris soin de moi depuis que j'existe jusqu'à aujourd'hui, 16 l'ange qui m'a délivré de tout mal, bénisse ces garçons! Que mon nom et celui de mes pères Abraham et Isaac subsistent à travers eux et qu'ils se multiplient abondamment à l'intérieur du pays!» 17 Joseph vit avec déplaisir que son père posait sa main droite sur la tête d'Ephraïm. Il prit la main de son père pour la détourner de la tête d'Ephraïm et la diriger sur celle de Manassé. 18 Joseph dit à son père: «Ce n'est pas juste, mon père, car c'est celui-ci qui est l'aîné. Pose ta main droite sur sa tête!» 19 Son père refusa et dit: «Je sais, mon fils, je sais. Lui aussi donnera naissance à un peuple, lui aussi sera grand, mais son frère cadet sera plus grand que lui et sa descendance remplira les nations.» 20 Il les bénit ce jour-là. Il dit: «C'est par toi qu'Israël bénira en disant: ‘Que Dieu te traite comme Ephraïm et comme Manassé!’» Il plaça Ephraïm avant Manassé. 21 Israël dit à Joseph: «Je vais mourir, mais Dieu sera avec vous et il vous fera retourner dans le pays de vos ancêtres. 22 Je te donne une part de plus qu'à tes frères: Sichem, que j'ai prise aux Amoréens avec mon épée et mon arc.»
