Joseph Interprets Two Prisoners’ Dreams

1 Some time after this, the cupbearer of the king of Egypt and his baker committed an offense against their lord the king of Egypt. (Ne 1:11) 2 And Pharaoh was angry with his two officers, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker, 3 and he put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the prison where Joseph was confined. (Ge 39:20) 4 The captain of the guard appointed Joseph to be with them, and he attended them. They continued for some time in custody. 5 And one night they both dreamed—the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were confined in the prison—each his own dream, and each dream with its own interpretation. 6 When Joseph came to them in the morning, he saw that they were troubled. 7 So he asked Pharaoh’s officers who were with him in custody in his master’s house, “Why are your faces downcast today?” (Ne 2:2) 8 They said to him, “We have had dreams, and there is no one to interpret them.” And Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God? Please tell them to me.” (Ge 41:15; Ge 41:16; Da 2:28; Da 2:47)

9 So the chief cupbearer told his dream to Joseph and said to him, “In my dream there was a vine before me, 10 and on the vine there were three branches. As soon as it budded, its blossoms shot forth, and the clusters ripened into grapes. 11 Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup and placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand.” 12 Then Joseph said to him, “This is its interpretation: the three branches are three days. 13 In three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your office, and you shall place Pharaoh’s cup in his hand as formerly, when you were his cupbearer. (Ge 40:19; Ge 40:22; 2Ki 25:27; Ps 3:3; Jer 52:31)

14 Only remember me, when it is well with you, and please do me the kindness to mention me to Pharaoh, and so get me out of this house. 15 For I was indeed stolen out of the land of the Hebrews, and here also I have done nothing that they should put me into the pit.” (Ge 37:28; Ge 39:20) 16 When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was favorable, he said to Joseph, “I also had a dream: there were three cake baskets on my head, 17 and in the uppermost basket there were all sorts of baked food for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating it out of the basket on my head.” 18 And Joseph answered and said, “This is its interpretation: the three baskets are three days. (Ge 40:12) 19 In three days Pharaoh will lift up your head—from you!—and hang you on a tree. And the birds will eat the flesh from you.” (Ge 40:13; Ge 40:22) 20 On the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, he made a feast for all his servants and lifted up the head of the chief cupbearer and the head of the chief baker among his servants. (Ge 40:13; Ge 40:19; Mt 14:6; Mr 6:21)

21 He restored the chief cupbearer to his position, and he placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand. (Ge 40:13; Ne 2:1) 22 But he hanged the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted to them. (Ge 40:19) 23 Yet the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.

Josef deutet die Träume der Kämmerer

1 Und es begab sich danach, dass sich der Mundschenk des Königs von Ägypten und der Bäcker versündigten an ihrem Herrn, dem König von Ägypten. 2 Und der Pharao wurde zornig über seine beiden Kämmerer, den Obersten der Mundschenken und den Obersten der Bäcker, 3 und gab sie in Gewahrsam ins Haus des Obersten der Leibwache, in das Gefängnis, wo Josef gefangen lag. 4 Und der Oberste der Leibwache befahl Josef zu ihnen, dass er ihnen diente. Und sie saßen einige Zeit im Gefängnis. 5 Und es träumte ihnen beiden, dem Mundschenk und dem Bäcker des Königs von Ägypten, in einer Nacht einem jeden ein eigener Traum, und eines jeden Traum hatte seine Bedeutung. 6 Als nun am Morgen Josef zu ihnen hineinkam und sah, dass sie bedrückt waren, 7 fragte er sie und sprach: Warum seid ihr heute so traurig? 8 Sie antworteten: Es hat uns geträumt, und wir haben niemand, der es uns auslege. Josef sprach: Auslegen steht bei Gott – doch erzählt mir’s! (Ge 41:15; Da 2:27) 9 Da erzählte der Oberste der Mundschenken Josef seinen Traum und sprach zu ihm: Mir hat geträumt, dass ein Weinstock vor mir wäre, 10 der hatte drei Reben, und er grünte, wuchs und blühte, und seine Trauben wurden reif. 11 Und ich hatte den Becher des Pharao in meiner Hand und nahm die Beeren und zerdrückte sie in den Becher und gab den Becher dem Pharao in die Hand. 12 Josef sprach zu ihm: Das ist seine Deutung: Drei Reben sind drei Tage. 13 Nach drei Tagen wird der Pharao dein Haupt erheben und dich wieder in dein Amt setzen, dass du ihm den Becher in die Hand gibst wie vormals, als du sein Mundschenk warst. 14 Aber gedenke meiner, wenn dir’s wohlgeht, und tu Barmherzigkeit an mir, dass du dem Pharao von mir sagst und mich so aus diesem Hause bringst. 15 Denn ich bin aus dem Lande der Hebräer heimlich gestohlen worden; und auch hier hab ich nichts getan, weswegen sie mich hätten ins Gefängnis setzen dürfen. (Ge 37:28) 16 Als der Oberste der Bäcker sah, dass die Deutung gut war, sprach er zu Josef: Mir hat auch geträumt, ich trüge drei Körbe mit feinem Backwerk auf meinem Haupt 17 und im obersten Korbe allerlei Gebackenes für den Pharao, und die Vögel fraßen aus dem Korbe auf meinem Haupt. 18 Josef antwortete und sprach: Das ist seine Deutung: Drei Körbe sind drei Tage. 19 Und nach drei Tagen wird der Pharao dein Haupt erheben und dich an den Galgen hängen, und die Vögel werden dein Fleisch von dir fressen. (De 21:22) 20 Und es geschah am dritten Tage, da beging der Pharao seinen Geburtstag. Und er machte ein Festmahl für alle seine Knechte und erhob das Haupt des Obersten der Mundschenken und das Haupt des Obersten der Bäcker unter seinen Knechten 21 und setzte den Obersten der Mundschenken wieder in sein Amt, dass er den Becher reiche in des Pharao Hand, 22 aber den Obersten der Bäcker ließ er aufhängen, wie ihnen Josef gedeutet hatte. 23 Aber der Oberste der Mundschenken dachte nicht an Josef, sondern vergaß ihn.

1 Après cela, le responsable des boissons et le boulanger du roi d'Egypte commirent une faute envers leur seigneur, le roi d'Egypte. 2 Le pharaon fut irrité contre ses deux officiers, le grand responsable des boissons et le chef des boulangers. 3 Il les fit mettre dans la maison du chef des gardes, dans la prison, à l'endroit où Joseph était enfermé. 4 Le chef des gardes les confia à Joseph, qui fit le service auprès d'eux. Ils passèrent un certain temps en prison. 5 Une même nuit, le responsable des boissons et le boulanger du roi d'Egypte qui étaient enfermés dans la prison firent tous les deux un rêve, chacun le sien avec son explication propre. 6 Joseph vint le matin vers eux et vit qu'ils étaient tristes. 7 Alors il demanda aux officiers du pharaon qui étaient avec lui dans la prison de son maître: «Pourquoi avez-vous mauvaise mine aujourd'hui?» 8 Ils lui répondirent: «Nous avons fait un rêve et il n'y a personne pour l'expliquer.» Joseph leur dit: «N'est-ce pas à Dieu qu'appartiennent les explications? Racontez-moi donc votre rêve.» 9 Le grand responsable des boissons raconta son rêve à Joseph. Il lui dit: «Dans mon rêve, il y avait un cep de vigne devant moi. 10 Ce cep portait trois sarments. Quand il a bourgeonné, sa fleur s'est développée et ses grappes ont donné des raisins mûrs. 11 La coupe du pharaon était dans ma main. J'ai pris les raisins, je les ai pressés dans la coupe du pharaon et j'ai mis la coupe dans la main du pharaon.» 12 Joseph lui dit: «Voici l'explication. Les trois sarments représentent trois jours. 13 Encore trois jours et le pharaon t'élèvera bien haut et te rétablira dans tes fonctions. Tu mettras la coupe dans la main du pharaon, comme tu en avais l'habitude lorsque tu étais son responsable des boissons. 14 Cependant, souviens-toi de moi quand tu seras heureux et fais preuve de bonté envers moi: parle en ma faveur au pharaon et fais-moi sortir de cette maison. 15 En effet, j'ai été arraché au pays des Hébreux, et même ici je n'ai rien fait qui mérite la prison.» 16 Voyant que Joseph avait donné une explication favorable, le chef des boulangers dit: «Dans mon rêve, il y avait aussi trois corbeilles de pain blanc sur ma tête. 17 Dans la corbeille supérieure, il y avait des plats cuits au four de toute sorte pour le pharaon, et les oiseaux les mangeaient dans la corbeille au-dessus de ma tête.» 18 Joseph répondit: «Voici l'explication. Les trois corbeilles représentent trois jours. 19 Encore trois jours et le pharaon t'élèvera bien trop haut pour toi: il te fera pendre à un bois et les oiseaux mangeront ton corps.» 20 Trois jours plus tard, le jour de son anniversaire, le pharaon organisa un festin pour tous ses serviteurs et il éleva bien haut le grand responsable des boissons ainsi que le chef des boulangers au milieu de ses serviteurs: 21 il rétablit le grand responsable des boissons dans ses fonctions pour qu'il mette la coupe dans la main du pharaon, 22 mais il fit pendre le chef des boulangers, conformément à l'explication que Joseph leur avait donnée. 23 Le grand responsable des boissons ne se souvint pas de Joseph. Il l'oublia.
