Abraham and Abimelech

1 From there Abraham journeyed toward the territory of the Negeb and lived between Kadesh and Shur; and he sojourned in Gerar. (Ge 16:7; Ge 16:14; Ge 26:3; Ge 26:6)

2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, “She is my sister.” And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah. (Ge 12:13; Ge 26:7) 3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night and said to him, “Behold, you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is a man’s wife.” (Job 33:15; Ps 105:14; Mt 1:20; Mt 2:12)

4 Now Abimelech had not approached her. So he said, “Lord, will you kill an innocent people? (Ge 18:23; 1Ch 21:17) 5 Did he not himself say to me, ‘She is my sister’? And she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ In the integrity of my heart and the innocence of my hands I have done this.” 6 Then God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know that you have done this in the integrity of your heart, and it was I who kept you from sinning against me. Therefore I did not let you touch her. (Ge 39:9; Ps 51:4) 7 Now then, return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet, so that he will pray for you, and you shall live. But if you do not return her, know that you shall surely die, you and all who are yours.” (Nu 16:32; 1Sa 7:5; Job 42:8) 8 So Abimelech rose early in the morning and called all his servants and told them all these things. And the men were very much afraid. 9 Then Abimelech called Abraham and said to him, “What have you done to us? And how have I sinned against you, that you have brought on me and my kingdom a great sin? You have done to me things that ought not to be done.” 10 And Abimelech said to Abraham, “What did you see, that you did this thing?” 11 Abraham said, “I did it because I thought, ‘There is no fear of God at all in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.’ (Ge 12:12; Ge 26:7; Pr 16:6) 12 Besides, she is indeed my sister, the daughter of my father though not the daughter of my mother, and she became my wife. (Ge 11:29) 13 And when God caused me to wander from my father’s house, I said to her, ‘This is the kindness you must do me: at every place to which we come, say of me, “He is my brother.”’” (Ge 12:1; Ge 12:13) 14 Then Abimelech took sheep and oxen, and male servants and female servants, and gave them to Abraham, and returned Sarah his wife to him. (Ge 12:16) 15 And Abimelech said, “Behold, my land is before you; dwell where it pleases you.” (Ge 13:9; Ge 34:10) 16 To Sarah he said, “Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver. It is a sign of your innocence in the eyes of all^[1] who are with you, and before everyone you are vindicated.” (Ge 20:5; Ge 24:65) 17 Then Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech, and also healed his wife and female slaves so that they bore children. (Jas 5:16) 18 For the Lord had closed all the wombs of the house of Abimelech because of Sarah, Abraham’s wife. (Ge 12:17)

1 Abraham aber zog von dannen ins Südland und wohnte zwischen Kadesch und Schur und lebte nun als ein Fremdling zu Gerar. (Ge 12:9; Ge 12:10; Ge 26:1) 2 Er sagte aber von Sara, seiner Frau: Sie ist meine Schwester. Da sandte Abimelech, der König von Gerar, hin und ließ Sara holen. 3 Aber Gott kam zu Abimelech des Nachts im Traum und sprach zu ihm: Siehe, du bist des Todes um der Frau willen, die du genommen hast; denn sie ist eines Mannes Ehefrau. 4 Abimelech aber hatte sie nicht berührt und sprach: Herr, willst du denn auch ein gerechtes Volk umbringen? 5 Hat er nicht zu mir gesagt: Sie ist meine Schwester? Und sie hat auch gesagt: Er ist mein Bruder. Hab ich das doch getan mit einfältigem Herzen und unschuldigen Händen. 6 Und Gott sprach zu ihm im Traum: Ich weiß auch, dass du das mit einfältigem Herzen getan hast. Darum habe ich dich auch behütet, dass du nicht wider mich sündigtest, und habe es nicht zugelassen, dass du sie berührtest. 7 So gib nun dem Mann seine Frau wieder, denn er ist ein Prophet, und lass ihn für dich bitten, so wirst du am Leben bleiben. Wenn du sie aber nicht wiedergibst, so wisse, dass du des Todes sterben musst und alles, was dein ist. (1Ki 13:6) 8 Da stand Abimelech früh am Morgen auf und rief alle seine Knechte und sagte dieses alles vor ihren Ohren. Und die Männer fürchteten sich sehr. 9 Und Abimelech rief Abraham auch herzu und sprach zu ihm: Warum hast du uns das angetan? Und was habe ich an dir gesündigt, dass du eine so große Sünde wolltest auf mich und mein Reich bringen? Du hast an mir gehandelt, wie man nicht handeln soll. 10 Und Abimelech sprach weiter zu Abraham: Wie bist du dazu gekommen, dass du solches getan hast? 11 Abraham sprach: Ich dachte, gewiss ist keine Gottesfurcht an diesem Orte, und sie werden mich um meiner Frau willen umbringen. 12 Auch ist sie wahrhaftig meine Schwester, denn sie ist meines Vaters Tochter, aber nicht meiner Mutter Tochter; so ist sie meine Frau geworden. (Le 18:9) 13 Als mich Gott aus meines Vaters Hause ins Ungewisse wandern hieß, sprach ich zu ihr: Tu mir diese Liebe, dass, wo wir hinkommen, du von mir sagst, ich sei dein Bruder. (Ge 12:1) 14 Da nahm Abimelech Schafe und Rinder, Knechte und Mägde und gab sie Abraham und gab ihm Sara, seine Frau, wieder. 15 Und Abimelech sprach: Siehe da, mein Land steht dir offen; wohne, wo dir’s wohlgefällt. 16 Und zu Sara sprach er: Siehe da, ich habe deinem Bruder tausend Silberstücke gegeben; siehe, das soll eine Decke sein über den Augen aller, die bei dir sind, dir zugute. Damit ist dir bei allen Recht verschafft. 17 Abraham aber betete zu Gott. Da heilte Gott Abimelech und seine Frau und seine Mägde, dass sie wieder Kinder gebaren. 18 Denn der HERR hatte zuvor hart verschlossen jeden Mutterschoß im Hause Abimelechs um Saras, Abrahams Frau, willen.

Séjour d'Abraham à Guérar

1 Abraham partit de là pour la région du Néguev. Il s'installa entre Kadès et Shur et fit un séjour à Guérar. 2 Abraham disait à propos de sa femme Sara: «C'est ma sœur.» Abimélec, roi de Guérar, fit enlever Sara. 3 Alors Dieu apparut à Abimélec dans un rêve pendant la nuit et lui dit: «Tu vas mourir à cause de la femme que tu as enlevée, car elle est mariée.» 4 Abimélec, qui ne s'était pas encore approché d'elle, répondit: «Seigneur, détruirais-tu même une nation juste? 5 Ne m'a-t-il pas dit qu'elle était sa sœur et elle-même n'a-t-elle pas dit qu'il était son frère? C'est avec un cœur intègre et des mains innocentes que j'ai agi.» 6 Dieu lui dit dans son rêve: «Je sais moi aussi que tu as agi avec un cœur intègre, si bien que je t'ai moi-même empêché de pécher contre moi. Voilà pourquoi je n'ai pas permis que tu la touches. 7 Maintenant, rends la femme de cet homme, car c'est un prophète. Il priera pour toi et tu vivras. Mais, si tu ne la rends pas, sache que tu mourras, toi et tout ce qui t'appartient.» 8 Abimélec se leva de bon matin, appela tous ses serviteurs et leur raconta toute l'affaire. Ces gens furent alors saisis d'une grande frayeur. 9 Abimélec appela aussi Abraham et lui dit: «Qu'est-ce que tu nous as fait? Quel péché ai-je commis contre toi pour que tu fasses venir sur moi et sur mon royaume un si grand péché? Tu as commis envers moi des actes qui ne doivent pas se commettre.» 10 Abimélec dit encore à Abraham: «Quelle intention avais-tu pour agir ainsi?» 11 Abraham répondit: «Je me disais qu'il n'y avait sans doute aucune crainte de Dieu dans ce pays et que l'on me tuerait à cause de ma femme. 12 De plus, il est vrai qu'elle est ma sœur, puisqu'elle est la fille de mon père; seulement, elle n'est pas la fille de ma mère et elle est devenue ma femme. 13 Lorsque Dieu m'a fait errer loin de ma famille, j'ai dit à Sara: ‘Voici l'acte de bonté dont tu pourras faire preuve envers moi: partout où nous irons, présente-moi comme ton frère.’» 14 Abimélec prit des brebis et des bœufs, des serviteurs et des servantes, et il les donna à Abraham. De plus, il lui rendit sa femme Sara 15 en disant: «Mon pays est devant toi. Installe-toi où il te plaira.» 16 Quant à Sara, il lui dit: «Je donne à ton frère 1000 pièces d'argent. Ce sera pour toi comme un voile sur les yeux pour tous ceux qui sont avec toi. Ainsi, ton innocence sera prouvée devant tous.» 17 Abraham pria Dieu, et Dieu guérit Abimélec, sa femme et ses servantes, de sorte qu'elles purent avoir des enfants. 18 En effet, l'Eternel avait frappé de stérilité tout le foyer d'Abimélec à cause de Sara, la femme d'Abraham.
