1Then Nahash the Ammonite went up and besieged Jabesh-gilead, and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Make a treaty with us, and we will serve you.” (Ge 26:28; Ex 23:32; Ex 34:12; Ex 34:15; De 7:2; Jud 21:8; 1Sa 12:12; 1Ki 20:34; Eze 17:13)2But Nahash the Ammonite said to them, “On this condition I will make a treaty with you, that I gouge out all your right eyes, and thus bring disgrace on all Israel.” (Ge 34:14; Nu 16:14; 1Sa 17:26)3The elders of Jabesh said to him, “Give us seven days’ respite that we may send messengers through all the territory of Israel. Then, if there is no one to save us, we will give ourselves up to you.”4When the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, they reported the matter in the ears of the people, and all the people wept aloud. (Jud 2:4; Jud 21:2; 1Sa 10:26)5Now, behold, Saul was coming from the field behind the oxen. And Saul said, “What is wrong with the people, that they are weeping?” So they told him the news of the men of Jabesh.6And the Spirit of God rushed upon Saul when he heard these words, and his anger was greatly kindled. (1Sa 10:6; 1Sa 10:10)7He took a yoke of oxen and cut them in pieces and sent them throughout all the territory of Israel by the hand of the messengers, saying, “Whoever does not come out after Saul and Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen!” Then the dread of the Lord fell upon the people, and they came out as one man. (Jud 19:29; Jud 20:1; Jud 21:5; Jud 21:8; Jud 21:10)8When he mustered them at Bezek, the people of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand. (Jud 1:5; Jud 20:15; 2Sa 24:9)9And they said to the messengers who had come, “Thus shall you say to the men of Jabesh-gilead: ‘Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you shall have salvation.’” When the messengers came and told the men of Jabesh, they were glad. (1Sa 11:13)10Therefore the men of Jabesh said, “Tomorrow we will give ourselves up to you, and you may do to us whatever seems good to you.” (1Sa 11:3)11And the next day Saul put the people in three companies. And they came into the midst of the camp in the morning watch and struck down the Ammonites until the heat of the day. And those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together. (Jud 7:16; 1Sa 31:11)
The Kingdom Is Renewed
12Then the people said to Samuel, “Who is it that said, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ Bring the men, that we may put them to death.” (1Sa 10:27; Lu 19:27)13But Saul said, “Not a man shall be put to death this day, for today the Lord has worked salvation in Israel.” (Ex 14:13; 1Sa 11:9; 1Sa 19:5; 2Sa 19:22)14Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us go to Gilgal and there renew the kingdom.”15So all the people went to Gilgal, and there they made Saul king before the Lord in Gilgal. There they sacrificed peace offerings before the Lord, and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly. (Jud 11:11; 1Sa 10:8; 1Sa 10:17; 1Sa 15:33)

Da erhob das ganze Volk seine Stimme und weinte.5Und siehe, da kam Saul vom Felde hinter den Rindern her und fragte: Was ist mit dem Volk, dass es weint? Da berichteten sie ihm die Worte der Männer von Jabesch.6Da geriet der Geist Gottes über Saul, als er diese Worte hörte, und sein Zorn entbrannte sehr. (Jud 13:25)7Und er nahm ein Gespann Rinder und zerstückte sie und sandte die Stücke in das ganze Gebiet Israels durch Boten und ließ sagen: Wer nicht auszieht hinter Saul und Samuel, mit dessen Rindern soll man ebenso tun. Da fiel der Schrecken des HERRN auf das Volk, dass sie auszogen wie ein Mann. (Jud 19:29)8Und er musterte sie zu Besek, und die Israeliten waren dreihunderttausend Mann und die Männer Judas dreißigtausend.9Und sie sagten den Boten, die gekommen waren: So sagt den Männern von Jabesch in Gilead: Morgen soll euch Hilfe werden, wenn die Sonne beginnt, heiß zu scheinen. Als die Boten heimkamen und das den Männern von Jabesch verkündeten, wurden diese froh.10Und die Männer von Jabesch sprachen: Morgen wollen wir zu euch hinausgehen, dass ihr mit uns alles tut, was euch gefällt.11Aber am andern Morgen teilte Saul das Volk in drei Heerhaufen, und sie kamen ins Lager um die Zeit der Morgenwache und schlugen die Ammoniter, bis der Tag heiß wurde; die aber übrig blieben, wurden so zerstreut, dass von ihnen nicht zwei beieinanderblieben.12Da sprach das Volk zu Samuel: Wer sind die, die gesagt haben: Sollte Saul über uns herrschen? Gebt sie her, die Männer, dass wir sie töten. (1Sa 10:27)13Saul aber sprach: Es soll an diesem Tage niemand sterben; denn der HERR hat heute Heil gegeben in Israel. (1Sa 14:45; 2Sa 19:23)14Samuel sprach zum Volk: Kommt, lasst uns nach Gilgal gehen und dort das Königtum erneuern. (1Sa 10:8)15Da ging das ganze Volk nach Gilgal, und sie machten Saul daselbst zum König vor dem HERRN in Gilgal und opferten Dankopfer vor dem HERRN. Saul aber und alle Männer Israels freuten sich dort gar sehr.

Tous les habitants de Jabès dirent à Nachash: «Conclus une alliance avec nous et nous te servirons.»2Mais Nachash l'Ammonite leur répondit: «Je traiterai avec vous à condition de vous crever à tous l'œil droit et de jeter ainsi la honte sur tout Israël.»3Les anciens de Jabès lui dirent: «Accorde-nous une trêve de sept jours afin que nous envoyions des messagers dans tout le territoire d'Israël. Si personne ne vient nous secourir, nous nous livrerons à toi.»4Les messagers arrivèrent à Guibea, la ville de Saül, et firent au peuple le récit de ces événements. Tout le peuple se mit alors à pleurer tout haut.5A ce moment, Saül revint des champs, derrière ses bœufs. Il demanda: «Qu'a donc le peuple, à pleurer ainsi?» On lui raconta ce qu'avaient dit les habitants de Jabès.6L'Esprit de Dieu vint sur Saül lorsqu'il entendit cela, et sa colère s'enflamma fortement.7Il prit une paire de bœufs, les coupa en morceaux et les envoya par l'intermédiaire de messagers dans tout le territoire d'Israël en disant: «Si quelqu'un ne marche pas à la suite de Saül et de Samuel, ses bœufs seront traités de la même manière.» La terreur de l'Eternel s'empara du peuple et il se mit en marche comme un seul homme.8Saül le passa en revue à Bézek: les Israélites étaient 300'000, et les hommes de Juda 30'000.9Ils annoncèrent aux messagers qui étaient venus: «Voici ce que vous direz aux habitants de Jabès en Galaad: ‘Demain vous aurez du secours, quand le soleil sera à son zénith.’» Les messagers portèrent cette nouvelle aux habitants de Jabès, qui furent remplis de joie.10Ils dirent aux Ammonites: «Demain nous nous livrerons à vous et vous nous traiterez comme vous voudrez.»11Le lendemain, Saül divisa le peuple en 3 groupes. Ils pénétrèrent dans le camp des Ammonites tôt le matin, et ils leur portèrent des coups jusqu'à la chaleur du jour. Ceux qui purent leur échapper furent dispersés au point qu'il n'en resta pas deux ensemble.12Le peuple dit à Samuel: «Quels sont les hommes qui refusaient de voir Saül régner sur eux? Livrez-les-nous et nous les ferons mourir.»13Mais Saül dit: «Personne ne sera mis à mort aujourd'hui, car aujourd'hui l'Eternel a accompli une délivrance en Israël.»14Samuel dit au peuple: «Venez, allons à Guilgal pour y confirmer la royauté.»15Tout le peuple se rendit à Guilgal et ils y sacrèrent Saül roi devant l'Eternel. Ils y offrirent des sacrifices de communion devant l'Eternel, et Saül et tous les hommes d'Israël s'y livrèrent à de grandes réjouissances.
