1There was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim of the hill country of Ephraim whose name was Elkanah the son of Jeroham, son of Elihu, son of Tohu, son of Zuph, an Ephrathite. (Jos 24:33; 1Sa 1:19; 1Ki 11:26)2He had two wives. The name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other, Peninnah. And Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.3Now this man used to go up year by year from his city to worship and to sacrifice to the Lord of hosts at Shiloh, where the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests of the Lord. (Ex 23:14; De 12:5; De 16:16; Jos 18:1; 1Sa 1:21; Lu 2:41)4On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and daughters. (De 12:17; De 16:11; Ne 8:10; Ne 8:12)5But to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the Lord had closed her womb.[1]6And her rival used to provoke her grievously to irritate her, because the Lord had closed her womb.7So it went on year by year. As often as she went up to the house of the Lord, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat.8And Elkanah, her husband, said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? And why do you not eat? And why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?” (Ru 4:15)9After they had eaten and drunk in Shiloh, Hannah rose. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the Lord. (1Sa 3:3)10She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord and wept bitterly. (Job 7:11; Job 10:1)11And she vowed a vow and said, “O Lord of hosts, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your servant and remember me and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a son, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall touch his head.” (Ge 28:20; Ge 29:32; Ge 30:22; Nu 6:5; Jud 11:30; Jud 13:5; 1Sa 1:19)12As she continued praying before the Lord, Eli observed her mouth.13Hannah was speaking in her heart; only her lips moved, and her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli took her to be a drunken woman.14And Eli said to her, “How long will you go on being drunk? Put your wine away from you.”15But Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman troubled in spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord. (Job 30:16; Ps 42:4; Ps 62:8; La 2:19)16Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for all along I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation.” (Jud 19:22; 1Sa 2:12)17Then Eli answered, “Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition that you have made to him.” (Jud 18:6; 1Sa 20:42; 2Ki 5:19; Ps 20:4; Mr 5:34)18And she said, “Let your servant find favor in your eyes.” Then the woman went her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad. (Ge 33:15; Ru 2:13; Ec 9:7)19They rose early in the morning and worshiped before the Lord; then they went back to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and the Lord remembered her. (1Sa 1:1; 1Sa 1:11; 1Sa 2:11)20And in due time Hannah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Samuel, for she said, “I have asked for him from the Lord.”[2]

21The man Elkanah and all his house went up to offer to the Lord the yearly sacrifice and to pay his vow. (1Sa 1:3)22But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, “As soon as the child is weaned, I will bring him, so that he may appear in the presence of the Lord and dwell there forever.” (1Sa 1:11; 1Sa 1:28; 1Sa 2:11; 1Sa 2:18; 1Sa 3:1)23Elkanah her husband said to her, “Do what seems best to you; wait until you have weaned him; only, may the Lord establish his word.” So the woman remained and nursed her son until she weaned him. (Nu 30:7; 2Sa 7:25)24And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, along with a three-year-old bull,[3] an ephah[4] of flour, and a skin of wine, and she brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh. And the child was young. (De 12:5; De 12:11; Jos 18:1; 1Sa 1:3; 1Sa 1:9)25Then they slaughtered the bull, and they brought the child to Eli.26And she said, “Oh, my lord! As you live, my lord, I am the woman who was standing here in your presence, praying to the Lord. (1Sa 17:55; 1Sa 20:3; 2Sa 11:11; 2Ki 2:2; 2Ki 2:4; 2Ki 2:6; 2Ki 4:30)27For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition that I made to him. (1Sa 1:17; Ps 6:9)28Therefore I have lent him to the Lord. As long as he lives, he is lent to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there. (Ge 24:26; Ge 24:52)

(Jos 18:1; 1Sa 4:4; Jer 7:12)4Wenn nun der Tag kam, dass Elkana opferte, gab er seiner Frau Peninna und allen ihren Söhnen und Töchtern ihre Anteile.5Aber Hanna gab er nur einen Anteil, obgleich er Hanna lieb hatte; der HERR aber hatte ihren Leib verschlossen.6Und ihre Widersacherin kränkte und reizte sie sehr, weil der HERR ihren Leib verschlossen hatte.7So ging es alle Jahre; wenn sie hinaufzog zum Haus des HERRN, kränkte jene sie. Dann weinte Hanna und aß nichts.8Elkana aber, ihr Mann, sprach zu ihr: Hanna, warum weinst du und warum isst du nichts? Und warum ist dein Herz so traurig? Bin ich dir nicht mehr wert als zehn Söhne?9Da stand Hanna auf, nachdem sie in Silo gegessen und getrunken hatten. Eli aber, der Priester, saß auf einem Stuhl am Türpfosten des Tempels des HERRN.10Und sie war von Herzen betrübt und betete zum HERRN und weinte sehr11und gelobte ein Gelübde und sprach: HERR Zebaoth, wirst du das Elend deiner Magd ansehen und an mich gedenken und deiner Magd nicht vergessen und wirst du deiner Magd einen Sohn geben, so will ich ihn dem HERRN geben sein Leben lang, und kein Schermesser soll auf sein Haupt kommen. (Nu 6:1; Jud 13:5)12Und da sie lange betete vor dem HERRN, achtete Eli auf ihren Mund;13denn Hanna redete in ihrem Herzen, nur ihre Lippen bewegten sich, ihre Stimme aber hörte man nicht. Da meinte Eli, sie wäre betrunken.14Und Eli sprach zu ihr: Wie lange willst du betrunken sein? Gib den Wein von dir, den du getrunken hast!15Hanna aber antwortete und sprach: Nein, mein Herr! Ich bin eine betrübte Frau; Wein und starkes Getränk hab ich nicht getrunken, sondern habe mein Herz vor dem HERRN ausgeschüttet.16Du wollest deine Magd nicht für eine zuchtlose Frau halten, denn ich hab aus meinem großen Kummer und aus Traurigkeit so lange geredet.17Eli antwortete und sprach: Gehe hin mit Frieden; der Gott Israels wird dir geben, was du von ihm erbeten hast.18Sie sprach: Lass deine Magd Gnade finden vor deinen Augen. Da ging die Frau ihres Weges und aß und sah nicht mehr so traurig drein.19Und am andern Morgen machten sie sich früh auf. Und als sie angebetet hatten vor dem HERRN, kehrten sie wieder um und kamen heim nach Rama. Und Elkana erkannte Hanna, seine Frau, und der HERR gedachte an sie. (Ge 30:22)20Und als die Tage um waren, ward Hanna schwanger, und sie gebar einen Sohn und nannte ihn Samuel; denn, so sprach sie, ich hab ihn von dem HERRN erbeten.21Und als der Mann Elkana hinaufzog mit seinem ganzen Hause, um dem HERRN das jährliche Opfer zu opfern und was er gelobt hatte,22zog Hanna nicht mit hinauf, sondern sprach zu ihrem Mann: Wenn der Knabe entwöhnt ist, will ich ihn bringen, dass er vor dem HERRN erscheine und bleibe dort für immer.23Elkana, ihr Mann, sprach zu ihr: So tu, wie dir’s gefällt! Bleib, bis du ihn entwöhnt hast; der HERR bestätige aber, was er geredet hat. So blieb die Frau und stillte ihren Sohn, bis sie ihn entwöhnt hatte.24Nachdem sie ihn entwöhnt hatte, nahm sie ihn mit sich hinauf, dazu einen dreijährigen Stier, einen Scheffel Mehl und einen Krug Wein, und brachte ihn in das Haus des HERRN nach Silo. Der Knabe war aber noch jung. (Nu 15:3; Nu 15:8)25Und sie schlachteten den Stier und brachten den Knaben zu Eli.26Und sie sprach: Ach, mein Herr, so wahr du lebst, mein Herr: Ich bin die Frau, die hier bei dir stand, um zum HERRN zu beten.27Um diesen Knaben bat ich. Nun hat der HERR mir gegeben, was ich von ihm erbeten habe.28Darum gebe ich ihn dem HERRN wieder sein Leben lang, weil er vom HERRN erbeten ist. Und sie beteten dort den HERRN an. Là se trouvaient les deux fils d'Eli, Hophni et Phinées, qui étaient prêtres de l'Eternel.4Le jour où Elkana offrait son sacrifice, il donnait des portions à sa femme Peninna et à tous les fils et à toutes les filles qu'il avait d'elle.5Mais à Anne, il donnait une portion double, car il l'aimait, même si l'Eternel l'avait rendue stérile.6Sa rivale la provoquait pour la pousser à s'irriter de ce que l'Eternel l'avait rendue stérile.7Et toutes les années il en allait de même: chaque fois qu'Anne montait à la maison de l'Eternel, Peninna la provoquait de la même manière. Alors elle pleurait et ne mangeait pas.8Son mari Elkana lui disait: «Anne, pourquoi pleures-tu et ne manges-tu pas? Pourquoi ton cœur est-il attristé? Est-ce que je ne vaux pas pour toi mieux que dix fils?»9Anne se leva, après que l'on eut mangé et bu à Silo. Le prêtre Eli était assis sur son siège, près de la porte du temple de l'Eternel.10L'amertume dans l'âme, elle pria l'Eternel et pleura abondamment.11Elle fit le vœu suivant: «Eternel, maître de l'univers, si tu consens à regarder la détresse de ta servante, si tu te souviens de moi, si tu n'oublies pas ta servante et lui donnes un fils, je le consacrerai à l'Eternel pour toute la durée de sa vie et le rasoir ne passera pas sur sa tête.»12Comme elle restait longtemps en prière devant l'Eternel, Eli observa sa bouche.13Anne parlait dans son cœur et ne faisait que remuer les lèvres, on n'entendait pas sa voix. Eli pensa qu'elle était ivre,14et il lui dit: «Jusqu'à quand seras-tu ivre? Va cuver ton vin.»15Anne répondit: «Ce n'est pas cela, mon seigneur. Je suis une femme à l'esprit abattu, je n'ai bu ni vin ni boisson enivrante, mais j'épanchais mon cœur devant l'Eternel.16Ne prends pas ta servante pour une femme légère, car c'est le trop-plein de ma douleur et de mon chagrin qui m'a fait parler jusqu'à présent.»17Eli reprit la parole et dit: «Pars en paix et que le Dieu d'Israël exauce la prière que tu lui as adressée!»18Elle répondit: «Que ta servante trouve grâce à tes yeux!» Cette femme s'en alla. Elle se remit à manger et son visage ne fut plus le même.19Ils se levèrent de bon matin et, après avoir adoré l'Eternel, ils partirent et retournèrent chez eux à Rama. Elkana eut des relations conjugales avec Anne, sa femme, et l'Eternel se souvint d'elle.20Dans le cours de l'année, Anne devint enceinte et elle mit au monde un fils qu'elle appela Samuel[1], car, dit-elle, «je l'ai demandé à l'Eternel».21Son mari Elkana monta ensuite avec toute sa famille offrir à l'Eternel le sacrifice annuel et accomplir son vœu.22Mais Anne ne monta pas à Silo. Elle dit à son mari: «Lorsque l'enfant sera sevré, je l'y conduirai afin qu'il soit présenté devant l'Eternel et qu'il reste là pour toujours.»23Son mari Elkana lui dit: «Fais ce qui te semblera bon, attends de l'avoir sevré. Seulement, que l'Eternel accomplisse sa parole!» La femme resta donc là et elle allaita son fils jusqu'au moment de son sevrage.24Quand elle l'eut sevré, elle le fit monter avec elle à Silo. Elle prit 3 taureaux, 22 litres de farine et une outre de vin. Elle conduisit l'enfant à la maison de l'Eternel à Silo alors qu'il était encore tout jeune.25Ils égorgèrent les taureaux et conduisirent l'enfant à Eli.26Anne dit: «Mon seigneur, pardon, aussi vrai que ton âme vit, mon seigneur, c'est moi qui me tenais ici près de toi pour prier l'Eternel.27C'était pour cet enfant que je priais, et l'Eternel a exaucé la prière que je lui adressais.28Aussi, je veux le prêter à l'Eternel; il sera toute sa vie prêté à l'Eternel.» Et ils se prosternèrent là devant l'Eternel.
