1 The oracle of the word of the LORD to Israel by Malachi.^[1]

The Lord’s Love for Israel

2 “I have loved you,” says the LORD. But you say, “How have you loved us?” “Is not Esau Jacob’s brother?” declares the LORD. “Yet I have loved Jacob (De 7:8; Jer 31:3; Am 1:11; Ob 1:10; Mal 2:14; Mal 2:17; Mal 3:7; Mal 3:8; Mal 3:13; Ro 9:13)

3 but Esau I have hated. I have laid waste his hill country and left his heritage to jackals of the desert.” (Isa 34:13; Jer 49:10; Jer 49:18; Eze 35:3; Eze 35:4; Joe 3:19)

4 If Edom says, “We are shattered but we will rebuild the ruins,” the LORD of hosts says, “They may build, but I will tear down, and they will be called ‘the wicked country,’ and ‘the people with whom the LORD is angry forever.’” 5 Your own eyes shall see this, and you shall say, “Great is the LORD beyond the border of Israel!” (Ps 91:8)

The Priests’ Polluted Offerings

6 “A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If then I am a father, where is my honor? And if I am a master, where is my fear? says the LORD of hosts to you, O priests, who despise my name. But you say, ‘How have we despised your name?’ (Ex 4:22; Ex 20:12; Ho 11:1; Mal 1:2; Lu 6:46)

7 By offering polluted food upon my altar. But you say, ‘How have we polluted you?’ By saying that the LORD’s table may be despised. (Mal 1:2; Mal 1:8; Mal 1:12; Mal 2:12; Mal 3:3)

8 When you offer blind animals in sacrifice, is that not evil? And when you offer those that are lame or sick, is that not evil? Present that to your governor; will he accept you or show you favor? says the LORD of hosts. (Le 22:22; Mal 1:13) 9 And now entreat the favor of God, that he may be gracious to us. With such a gift from your hand, will he show favor to any of you? says the LORD of hosts. (De 10:17; Zec 7:2) 10 Oh that there were one among you who would shut the doors, that you might not kindle fire on my altar in vain! I have no pleasure in you, says the LORD of hosts, and I will not accept an offering from your hand. (Isa 1:11; Isa 1:13; Jer 6:20; Am 5:21)

11 For from the rising of the sun to its setting my name will be^[2] great among the nations, and in every place incense will be offered to my name, and a pure offering. For my name will be great among the nations, says the LORD of hosts. (Isa 2:2; Isa 56:7; Isa 60:3; Isa 66:19)

12 But you profane it when you say that the Lord’s table is polluted, and its fruit, that is, its food, may be despised. (Mal 1:7) 13 But you say, ‘What a weariness this is,’ and you snort at it, says the LORD of hosts. You bring what has been taken by violence or is lame or sick, and this you bring as your offering! Shall I accept that from your hand? says the LORD. (Le 22:20; Isa 3:14; Isa 43:23; Mic 6:3)

14 Cursed be the cheat who has a male in his flock, and vows it, and yet sacrifices to the Lord what is blemished. For I am a great King, says the LORD of hosts, and my name will be feared among the nations. (Ex 12:5; Le 22:21; Ps 47:2; Ps 76:12; Zec 14:9)

1 Oracle, parole de l'Éternel à Israël par Malachie. 2 Je vous ai aimés, dit l'Éternel. Et vous dites: En quoi nous as-tu aimés? Ésaü n'est-il pas frère de Jacob? dit l'Éternel. Cependant j'ai aimé Jacob, 3 Et j'ai eu de la haine pour Ésaü, J'ai fait de ses montagnes une solitude, J'ai livré son héritage aux chacals du désert. 4 Si Édom dit: Nous sommes détruits, Nous relèverons les ruines! Ainsi parle l'Éternel des armées: Qu'ils bâtissent, je renverserai, Et on les appellera pays de la méchanceté, Peuple contre lequel l'Éternel est irrité pour toujours. 5 Vos yeux le verront, Et vous direz: Grand est l'Éternel Par delà les frontières d'Israël! 6 Un fils honore son père, et un serviteur son maître. Si je suis père, où est l'honneur qui m'est dû? Si je suis maître, où est la crainte qu'on a de moi? Dit l'Éternel des armées à vous, sacrificateurs, Qui méprisez mon nom, Et qui dites: En quoi avons-nous méprisé ton nom? 7 Vous offrez sur mon autel des aliments impurs, Et vous dites: En quoi t'avons-nous profané? C'est en disant: La table de l'Éternel est méprisable! 8 Quand vous offrez en sacrifice une bête aveugle, n'est-ce pas mal? Quand vous en offrez une boiteuse ou infirme, n'est-ce pas mal? Offre-la donc à ton gouverneur! Te recevra-t-il bien, te fera-t-il bon accueil? Dit l'Éternel des armées. 9 Priez Dieu maintenant, pour qu'il ait pitié de nous! C'est de vous que cela vient: Vous recevra-t-il favorablement? Dit l'Éternel des armées. 10 Lequel de vous fermera les portes, Pour que vous n'allumiez pas en vain le feu sur mon autel? Je ne prends aucun plaisir en vous, dit l'Éternel des armées, Et les offrandes de votre main ne me sont point agréables. 11 Car depuis le lever du soleil jusqu'à son couchant, Mon nom est grand parmi les nations, Et en tout lieu on brûle de l'encens en l'honneur de mon nom Et l'on présente des offrandes pures; Car grand est mon nom parmi les nations, Dit l'Éternel des armées. 12 Mais vous, vous le profanez, En disant: La table de l'Éternel est souillée, Et ce qu'elle rapporte est un aliment méprisable. 13 Vous dites: Quelle fatigue! et vous le dédaignez, Dit l'Éternel des armées; Et cependant vous amenez ce qui est dérobé, boiteux ou infirme, Et ce sont les offrandes que vous faites! Puis-je les agréer de vos mains? dit l'Éternel. 14 Maudit soit le trompeur qui a dans son troupeau un mâle, Et qui voue et sacrifie au Seigneur une bête chétive! Car je suis un grand roi, dit l'Éternel des armées, Et mon nom est redoutable parmi les nations.
