True and False Fasting

1 “Cry aloud; do not hold back; lift up your voice like a trumpet; declare to my people their transgression, to the house of Jacob their sins. (Le 25:9; Joe 2:1; Mic 3:8) 2 Yet they seek me daily and delight to know my ways, as if they were a nation that did righteousness and did not forsake the judgment of their God; they ask of me righteous judgments; they delight to draw near to God. 3 ‘Why have we fasted, and you see it not? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you take no knowledge of it?’ Behold, in the day of your fast you seek your own pleasure,^[1] and oppress all your workers. (Isa 60:17; Mal 3:14) 4 Behold, you fast only to quarrel and to fight and to hit with a wicked fist. Fasting like yours this day will not make your voice to be heard on high. 5 Is such the fast that I choose, a day for a person to humble himself? Is it to bow down his head like a reed, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? Will you call this a fast, and a day acceptable to the LORD? (Le 16:29; Zec 7:5) 6 “Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed^[2] go free, and to break every yoke? (Ne 5:10; Isa 58:9) 7 Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh? 8 Then shall your light break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up speedily; your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. (Job 11:17; Ps 85:13; Isa 52:12; Jer 30:17)

13 “If you turn back your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure^[3] on my holy day, and call the Sabbath a delight and the holy day of the LORD honorable; if you honor it, not going your own ways, or seeking your own pleasure,^[4] or talking idly;^[5] (Ne 13:15; Isa 56:2; Isa 58:3) 14 then you shall take delight in the LORD, and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth;^[6] I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.” (De 32:13; Isa 1:20; Jer 50:19)

1 Crie à plein gosier, ne te retiens pas, Élève ta voix comme une trompette, Et annonce à mon peuple ses iniquités, A la maison de Jacob ses péchés! 2 Tous les jours ils me cherchent, Ils veulent connaître mes voies; Comme une nation qui aurait pratiqué la justice Et n'aurait pas abandonné la loi de son Dieu, Ils me demandent des arrêts de justice, Ils désirent l'approche de Dieu. - 3 Que nous sert de jeûner, si tu ne le vois pas? De mortifier notre âme, si tu n'y as point égard? -Voici, le jour de votre jeûne, vous vous livrez à vos penchants, Et vous traitez durement tous vos mercenaires. 4 Voici, vous jeûnez pour disputer et vous quereller, Pour frapper méchamment du poing; Vous ne jeûnez pas comme le veut ce jour, Pour que votre voix soit entendue en haut. 5 Est-ce là le jeûne auquel je prends plaisir, Un jour où l'homme humilie son âme? Courber la tête comme un jonc, Et se coucher sur le sac et la cendre, Est-ce là ce que tu appelleras un jeûne, Un jour agréable à l'Éternel? 6 Voici le jeûne auquel je prends plaisir: Détache les chaînes de la méchanceté, Dénoue les liens de la servitude, Renvoie libres les opprimés, Et que l'on rompe toute espèce de joug; 7 Partage ton pain avec celui qui a faim, Et fais entrer dans ta maison les malheureux sans asile; Si tu vois un homme nu, couvre-le, Et ne te détourne pas de ton semblable. 8 Alors ta lumière poindra comme l'aurore, Et ta guérison germera promptement; Ta justice marchera devant toi, Et la gloire de l'Éternel t'accompagnera. 9 Alors tu appelleras, et l'Éternel répondra; Tu crieras, et il dira: Me voici! Si tu éloignes du milieu de toi le joug, Les gestes menaçants et les discours injurieux, 10 Si tu donnes ta propre subsistance à celui qui a faim, Si tu rassasies l'âme indigente, Ta lumière se lèvera sur l'obscurité, Et tes ténèbres seront comme le midi. 11 L'Éternel sera toujours ton guide, Il rassasiera ton âme dans les lieux arides, Et il redonnera de la vigueur à tes membres; Tu seras comme un jardin arrosé, Comme une source dont les eaux ne tarissent pas. 12 Les tiens rebâtiront sur d'anciennes ruines, Tu relèveras des fondements antiques; On t'appellera réparateur des brèches, Celui qui restaure les chemins, qui rend le pays habitable. 13 Si tu retiens ton pied pendant le sabbat, Pour ne pas faire ta volonté en mon saint jour, Si tu fais du sabbat tes délices, Pour sanctifier l'Éternel en le glorifiant, Et si tu l'honores en ne suivant point tes voies, En ne te livrant pas à tes penchants et à de vains discours, 14 Alors tu mettras ton plaisir en l'Éternel, Et je te ferai monter sur les hauteurs du pays, Je te ferai jouir de l'héritage de Jacob, ton père; Car la bouche de l'Éternel a parlé.
