Comfort for God’s People

1 Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. (Isa 51:12; Lu 2:25) 2 Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that her warfare^[1] is ended, that her iniquity is pardoned, that she has received from the LORD’s hand double for all her sins. (2Ch 36:22; Jer 25:12; Ho 2:14) 3 A voice cries:^[2] “In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. 4 Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. (Lu 3:5) 5 And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.” (Isa 1:20; Lu 3:6)

The Word of God Stands Forever

7 The grass withers, the flower fades when the breath of the LORD blows on it; surely the people are grass. 8 The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. (Jas 1:11)

The Greatness of God

9 Go on up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good news;^[5] lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good news;^[6] lift it up, fear not; say to the cities of Judah, “Behold your God!” (Isa 52:7) 10 Behold, the Lord GOD comes with might, and his arm rules for him; behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. 12 Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand and marked off the heavens with a span, enclosed the dust of the earth in a measure and weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance? (Pr 30:4) 13 Who has measured^[7] the Spirit of the LORD, or what man shows him his counsel? (Ro 11:34; 1Co 2:16) 14 Whom did he consult, and who made him understand? Who taught him the path of justice, and taught him knowledge, and showed him the way of understanding? (Job 21:22) 15 Behold, the nations are like a drop from a bucket, and are accounted as the dust on the scales; behold, he takes up the coastlands like fine dust. 19 An idol! A craftsman casts it, and a goldsmith overlays it with gold and casts for it silver chains. (Isa 18:1) 20 He who is too impoverished for an offering chooses wood^[8] that will not rot; he seeks out a skillful craftsman to set up an idol that will not move. 22 It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to dwell in; (Nu 13:33; Job 9:8; Ps 104:2) 23 who brings princes to nothing, and makes the rulers of the earth as emptiness. The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. (Ps 121:4; Ps 147:5) 29 He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. 30 Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; 31 but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. Qui lui a enseigné la sagesse, Et fait connaître le chemin de l'intelligence? 15 Voici, les nations sont comme une goutte d'un seau, Elles sont comme de la poussière sur une balance; Voici, les îles sont comme une fine poussière qui s'envole. 16 Le Liban ne suffit pas pour le feu, Et ses animaux ne suffisent pas pour l'holocauste. 17 Toutes les nations sont devant lui comme un rien, Elles ne sont pour lui que néant et vanité. 18 A qui voulez-vous comparer Dieu? Et quelle image ferez-vous son égale? 19 C'est un ouvrier qui fond l'idole, Et c'est un orfèvre qui la couvre d'or, Et y soude des chaînettes d'argent. 20 Celui que la pauvreté oblige à donner peu Choisit un bois qui résiste à la vermoulure; Il se procure un ouvrier capable, Pour faire une idole qui ne branle pas. 21 Ne le savez-vous pas? ne l'avez-vous pas appris? Ne vous l'a-t-on pas fait connaître dès le commencement? N'avez-vous jamais réfléchi à la fondation de la terre? 22 C'est lui qui est assis au-dessus du cercle de la terre, Et ceux qui l'habitent sont comme des sauterelles; Il étend les cieux comme une étoffe légère, Il les déploie comme une tente, pour en faire sa demeure. 23 C'est lui qui réduit les princes au néant, Et qui fait des juges de la terre une vanité; 24 Ils ne sont pas même plantés, pas même semés, Leur tronc n'a pas même de racine en terre: Il souffle sur eux, et ils se dessèchent, Et un tourbillon les emporte comme le chaume. 25 A qui me comparerez-vous, pour que je lui ressemble? Dit le Saint. 26 Levez vos yeux en haut, et regardez! Qui a créé ces choses? Qui fait marcher en ordre leur armée? Il les appelle toutes par leur nom; Par son grand pouvoir et par sa force puissante, Il n'en est pas une qui fasse défaut. 27 Pourquoi dis-tu, Jacob, Pourquoi dis-tu, Israël: Ma destinée est cachée devant l'Éternel, Mon droit passe inaperçu devant mon Dieu? 28 Ne le sais-tu pas? ne l'as-tu pas appris? C'est le Dieu d'éternité, l'Éternel, Qui a créé les extrémités de la terre; Il ne se fatigue point, il ne se lasse point; On ne peut sonder son intelligence. 29 Il donne de la force à celui qui est fatigué, Et il augmente la vigueur de celui qui tombe en défaillance. 30 Les adolescents se fatiguent et se lassent, Et les jeunes hommes chancellent; 31 Mais ceux qui se confient en l'Éternel renouvellent leur force. Ils prennent le vol comme les aigles; Ils courent, et ne se lassent point, Ils marchent, et ne se fatiguent point.
