1 The LORD said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.” (1Sa 10:1; 1Sa 15:23; 1Sa 15:26; 1Sa 15:35; Ps 78:70; Ps 89:19; Ps 89:20; Ac 13:22) 2 And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.” And the LORD said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.’ (1Sa 9:12; 1Sa 20:29) 3 And invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do. And you shall anoint for me him whom I declare to you.” (1Sa 9:16) 4 Samuel did what the LORD commanded and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling and said, “Do you come peaceably?” (1Sa 21:1; 1Ki 2:13; 2Ki 9:22) 5 And he said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” And he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. (Jos 3:5) 6 When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, “Surely the LORD’s anointed is before him.” (1Sa 17:13) 7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.” (1Ki 8:39; 1Ch 28:9; Ps 7:9; Ps 147:10; Ps 147:11; Jer 11:20; Jer 17:10; Jer 20:12; Ac 1:24) 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “Neither has the LORD chosen this one.” (1Sa 17:13) 9 Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has the LORD chosen this one.” (1Sa 8:1) 10 And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The LORD has not chosen these.” 11 Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest,[1] but behold, he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.” (1Sa 17:13; 2Sa 7:8; 2Sa 13:3; 1Ch 2:13; Ps 78:70; Ps 78:71) 12 And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the LORD said, “Arise, anoint him, for this is he.” (1Sa 9:17; 1Sa 17:42) 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah. (Jud 3:10; 1Sa 10:1; 1Sa 10:6; 1Sa 10:10; 1Sa 11:6; 1Sa 16:1; Ps 89:20) 14 Now the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and a harmful spirit from the LORD tormented him. (Jud 9:23; Jud 16:20; 1Sa 18:10; 1Sa 18:12; 1Sa 19:9; 1Sa 28:15; 1Sa 28:16) 15 And Saul’s servants said to him, “Behold now, a harmful spirit from God is tormenting you. 16 Let our lord now command your servants who are before you to seek out a man who is skillful in playing the lyre, and when the harmful spirit from God is upon you, he will play it, and you will be well.” (1Sa 16:21; 1Sa 18:10; 1Sa 19:9; 1Ki 10:8; 2Ki 3:15) 17 So Saul said to his servants, “Provide for me a man who can play well and bring him to me.” 18 One of the young men answered, “Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a man of good presence, and the LORD is with him.” (1Sa 3:19; 1Sa 17:32; 1Sa 17:34; 1Sa 18:12; 1Sa 18:14) 19 Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me David your son, who is with the sheep.” (1Sa 16:11; 1Sa 17:15; 1Sa 17:34) 20 And Jesse took a donkey laden with bread and a skin of wine and a young goat and sent them by David his son to Saul. (1Sa 17:18) 21 And David came to Saul and entered his service. And Saul loved him greatly, and he became his armor-bearer. (1Sa 16:1) 22 And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, “Let David remain in my service, for he has found favor in my sight.” 23 And whenever the harmful spirit from God was upon Saul, David took the lyre and played it with his hand. So Saul was refreshed and was well, and the harmful spirit departed from him. (1Sa 16:1; 1Sa 16:14)

1 L'Éternel dit à Samuel: Quand cesseras-tu de pleurer sur Saül? Je l'ai rejeté, afin qu'il ne règne plus sur Israël. Remplis ta corne d'huile, et va; je t'enverrai chez Isaï, Bethléhémite, car j'ai vu parmi ses fils celui que je désire pour roi. 2 Samuel dit: Comment irai-je? Saül l'apprendra, et il me tuera. Et l'Éternel dit: Tu emmèneras avec toi une génisse, et tu diras: Je viens pour offrir un sacrifice à l'Éternel. 3 Tu inviteras Isaï au sacrifice; je te ferai connaître ce que tu dois faire, et tu oindras pour moi celui que je te dirai. 4 Samuel fit ce que l'Éternel avait dit, et il alla à Bethléhem. Les anciens de la ville accoururent effrayés au-devant de lui et dirent: Ton arrivée annonce-t-elle quelque chose d'heureux? 5 Il répondit: Oui; je viens pour offrir un sacrifice à l'Éternel. Sanctifiez-vous, et venez avec moi au sacrifice. Il fit aussi sanctifier Isaï et ses fils, et il les invita au sacrifice. 6 Lorsqu'ils entrèrent, il se dit, en voyant Éliab: Certainement, l'oint de l'Éternel est ici devant lui. 7 Et l'Éternel dit à Samuel: Ne prends point garde à son apparence et à la hauteur de sa taille, car je l'ai rejeté. L'Éternel ne considère pas ce que l'homme considère; l'homme regarde à ce qui frappe les yeux, mais l'Éternel regarde au coeur. 8 Isaï appela Abinadab, et le fit passer devant Samuel; et Samuel dit: L'Éternel n'a pas non plus choisi celui-ci. 9 Isaï fit passer Schamma; et Samuel dit: L'Éternel n'a pas non plus choisi celui-ci. 10 Isaï fit passer ses sept fils devant Samuel; et Samuel dit à Isaï: L'Éternel n'a choisi aucun d'eux. 11 Puis Samuel dit à Isaï: Sont-ce là tous tes fils? Et il répondit: Il reste encore le plus jeune, mais il fait paître les brebis. Alors Samuel dit à Isaï: Envoie-le chercher, car nous ne nous placerons pas avant qu'il ne soit venu ici. 12 Isaï l'envoya chercher. Or il était blond, avec de beaux yeux et une belle figure. L'Éternel dit à Samuel: Lève-toi, oins-le, car c'est lui! 13 Samuel prit la corne d'huile, et l'oignit au milieu de ses frères. L'esprit de l'Éternel saisit David, à partir de ce jour et dans la suite. Samuel se leva, et s'en alla à Rama. 14 L'esprit de l'Éternel se retira de Saül, qui fut agité par un mauvais esprit venant de l'Éternel. 15 Les serviteurs de Saül lui dirent: Voici, un mauvais esprit de Dieu t'agite. 16 Que notre seigneur parle! Tes serviteurs sont devant toi. Ils chercheront un homme qui sache jouer de la harpe; et, quand le mauvais esprit de Dieu sera sur toi, il jouera de sa main, et tu seras soulagé. 17 Saül répondit à ses serviteurs: Trouvez-moi donc un homme qui joue bien, et amenez-le-moi. 18 L'un des serviteurs prit la parole, et dit: Voici, j'ai vu un fils d'Isaï, Bethléhémite, qui sait jouer; c'est aussi un homme fort et vaillant, un guerrier, parlant bien et d'une belle figure, et l'Éternel est avec lui. 19 Saül envoya des messagers à Isaï, pour lui dire: Envoie-moi David, ton fils, qui est avec les brebis. 20 Isaï prit un âne, qu'il chargea de pain, d'une outre de vin et d'un chevreau, et il envoya ces choses à Saül par David, son fils. 21 David arriva auprès de Saül, et se présenta devant lui; il plut beaucoup à Saül, et il fut désigné pour porter ses armes. 22 Saül fit dire à Isaï: Je te prie de laisser David à mon service, car il a trouvé grâce à mes yeux. 23 Et lorsque l'esprit de Dieu était sur Saül, David prenait la harpe et jouait de sa main; Saül respirait alors plus à l'aise et se trouvait soulagé, et le mauvais esprit se retirait de lui.
