Tola and Jair

1 After Abimelech there arose to save Israel Tola the son of Puah, son of Dodo, a man of Issachar, and he lived at Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim. (Jos 24:33; Jud 2:16; Jud 10:12) 2 And he judged Israel twenty-three years. Then he died and was buried at Shamir. 3 After him arose Jair the Gileadite, who judged Israel twenty-two years. 4 And he had thirty sons who rode on thirty donkeys, and they had thirty cities, called Havvoth-jair to this day, which are in the land of Gilead. (De 3:14; Jud 5:10; Jud 12:14) 5 And Jair died and was buried in Kamon.

Further Disobedience and Oppression

6 The people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth, the gods of Syria, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites, and the gods of the Philistines. And they forsook the Lord and did not serve him. (De 31:16; Jud 2:11; Jud 2:13; Jud 10:10; Jud 10:13; 1Ki 11:5; 1Ki 11:7; 1Ki 11:33; 2Ki 23:13)

7 So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of the Philistines and into the hand of the Ammonites, (Jud 2:14) 8 and they crushed and oppressed the people of Israel that year. For eighteen years they oppressed all the people of Israel who were beyond the Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead. 9 And the Ammonites crossed the Jordan to fight also against Judah and against Benjamin and against the house of Ephraim, so that Israel was severely distressed. 10 And the people of Israel cried out to the Lord, saying, “We have sinned against you, because we have forsaken our God and have served the Baals.” (Jud 3:9; Jud 10:6; Jud 10:13) 11 And the Lord said to the people of Israel, “Did I not save you from the Egyptians and from the Amorites, from the Ammonites and from the Philistines? 14 Go and cry out to the gods whom you have chosen; let them save you in the time of your distress.” (De 32:37) 15 And the people of Israel said to the Lord, “We have sinned; do to us whatever seems good to you. Only please deliver us this day.” 16 So they put away the foreign gods from among them and served the Lord, and he became impatient over the misery of Israel. (Jud 2:18; Isa 63:9) 17 Then the Ammonites were called to arms, and they encamped in Gilead. And the people of Israel came together, and they encamped at Mizpah. Die Richter Tola und Jaïr

1 Nach dem Tod Abimelechs trat wieder ein Mann auf, um Israel zu retten: Tola, der Sohn Puas und Enkel Dodos aus dem Stamm Issachar. Er wohnte in Schamir im Bergland von Efraïm. 2 Dreiundzwanzig Jahre lang war er der Richter Israels. Dann starb er und wurde in seinem Heimatort begraben. 3 Nach ihm trat Jaïr aus der Landschaft Gilead auf und wurde für zweiundzwanzig Jahre der Richter Israels. (Nu 32:41; De 3:14; 1Ch 2:21) 4 Er hatte dreißig Söhne, die auf dreißig Eseln ritten und dreißig Ortschaften besaßen. Diese Ortschaften liegen in Gilead und heißen bis zum heutigen Tag die »Dörfer Jaïrs«. 5 Als Jaïr starb, wurde er in Kamon begraben.

Ungehorsam bringt die Israeliten in schwere Not

6 Die Leute von Israel taten von Neuem, was dem HERRN missfällt. Sie verehrten fremde Götter, die Baale und Astarten^[1] sowie die Götter der Syrer und Phönizier, der Moabiter, Ammoniter und Philister. Dem HERRN aber kehrten sie den Rücken und ehrten ihn nicht. 7 Da wurde der HERR zornig auf sie und gab sie den Philistern und den Ammonitern preis. 8 Achtzehn Jahre lang wurden alle Israeliten, die jenseits des Jordans in Gilead, im ehemaligen Gebiet der Amoriter, wohnten, von den Ammonitern grausam unterdrückt. 9 Zuletzt überschritten die Ammoniter sogar den Jordan und griffen die Stämme Juda, Benjamin und Efraïm an. So geriet ganz Israel in große Bedrängnis. 10 Da schrien die Leute von Israel zum HERRN um Hilfe. »Wir haben uns gegen dich vergangen«, sagten sie. »Es war nicht recht, dass wir dir, unserem Gott, den Rücken gekehrt und die Baale verehrt haben.« 11 Der HERR antwortete: »Habe ich euch nicht vor den Ägyptern, den Amoritern, Ammonitern und Philistern gerettet? (Jud 6:8) 12 Und als ihr zu mir um Hilfe rieft, weil euch die Phönizier, Amalekiter und Maoniter bedrängten, habe ich euch da nicht vor ihnen beschützt? 13 Ihr aber habt euch von mir abgewandt und habt anderen Göttern geopfert. Deshalb werde ich euch jetzt nicht mehr helfen. 14 Geht doch zu den Göttern, die ihr euch ausgesucht habt! Die sollen euch jetzt in der Not beistehen und euch retten!« 15 Die Leute von Israel sagten: »Wir haben schwere Schuld auf uns geladen. Tu mit uns, was du für richtig hältst, aber lass uns nicht untergehen; rette uns!« 16 Sie schafften die Bilder der fremden Götter weg und dienten wieder dem HERRN. Da konnte er das Leiden der Israeliten nicht länger mit ansehen. (Jos 24:23)

Jiftach wird Anführer der Israeliten

17 Die Ammoniter sammelten sich und schlugen ihr Lager bei der Stadt Gilead auf; die Männer Israels aber kamen bei Mizpa zusammen. 18 Die führenden Männer der Landschaft Gilead fragten sich besorgt: »Wer wird uns im Kampf gegen die Ammoniter anführen?« Und sie beschlossen: »Wer das übernimmt, soll Herrscher über alle Bewohner von Gilead werden.«
