1When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered. (2Sa 15:23; Mt 26:30; Mt 26:36; Mr 14:26; Mr 14:32; Lu 22:39)2Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples. (Lu 21:37; Lu 22:39; Lu 22:40)3So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons. (Mt 26:47; Mr 14:43; Lu 22:47)4Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, “Whom do you seek?” (Joh 1:38; Joh 13:1; Joh 18:7; Joh 20:15)5They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.”[1] Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.6When Jesus[2] said to them, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground. (Mt 26:53; Joh 10:18; Re 1:17)7So he asked them again, “Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” (Joh 18:4)8Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. So, if you seek me, let these men go.”9This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken: “Of those whom you gave me I have lost not one.” (Joh 17:12)10Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant[3] and cut off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.) (Lu 22:38)11So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?” (Isa 51:22; Mt 20:22; Mt 26:39; Mt 26:42)
Jesus Faces Annas and Caiaphas
12So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews[4] arrested Jesus and bound him.13First they led him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. (Mt 26:3; Mt 26:57; Lu 3:2; Joh 18:24; Joh 18:28; Ac 4:6)14It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people. (Joh 11:50)
Peter Denies Jesus
15Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest, (Mt 26:58; Mr 14:54; Lu 22:54)16but Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door, and brought Peter in. (Mt 26:69; Mr 14:66; Lu 22:55)17The servant girl at the door said to Peter, “You also are not one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.” (Ac 12:13)18Now the servants[5] and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself. (Mr 14:54; Joh 18:25)
The High Priest Questions Jesus
19The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching. (Mt 26:59; Mr 14:55; Lu 22:63)20Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together. I have said nothing in secret. (Isa 45:19; Isa 48:16; Mt 26:55; Joh 7:4; Joh 7:26; Joh 8:26)21Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them; they know what I said.”22When he had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, “Is that how you answer the high priest?” (Ac 23:4)23Jesus answered him, “If what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong; but if what I said is right, why do you strike me?”24Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. (Joh 18:13)
Peter Denies Jesus Again
25Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You also are not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” (Mt 26:71; Mr 14:69; Lu 22:58)26One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?” (Joh 18:1; Joh 18:10)27Peter again denied it, and at once a rooster crowed. (Joh 13:38)
Jesus Before Pilate
28Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the governor’s headquarters.[6] It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the governor’s headquarters, so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover. (Mt 27:2; Mt 27:27; Mr 15:1; Lu 23:1; Joh 11:55; Joh 18:24; Joh 18:33; Joh 19:9; Joh 19:14; Ac 10:28; Ac 11:3)29So Pilate went outside to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” (Mt 27:11; Mr 15:2; Lu 23:2)30They answered him, “If this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.”31Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.” (Joh 19:6)32This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to show by what kind of death he was going to die. (Mt 20:19; Mt 26:2; Mr 10:33; Lu 18:32; Joh 12:32; Joh 13:18)
My Kingdom Is Not of This World
33So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” (Joh 19:9; Joh 19:12)34Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?”35Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?”36Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.” (Da 2:44; Da 7:14; Da 7:27; Mt 26:53; Lu 17:21; Joh 6:15; Joh 8:23; Joh 15:19; Joh 17:14; Joh 17:16; Joh 19:16; 1Jo 2:16; 1Jo 4:5)37Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” (Lu 22:70; Joh 3:11; Joh 3:32; Joh 5:31; Joh 8:13; Joh 8:18; Joh 8:47; Joh 10:16; Joh 10:27; Joh 12:27; Joh 16:28; Ro 14:9; 1Jo 2:21; 1Jo 3:19; 1Jo 4:6)38Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him. (Lu 23:4; Joh 19:4; Joh 19:6)39But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” (Mt 27:15; Mt 27:20; Mr 15:6; Lu 23:18)40They cried out again, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.[7] (Ac 3:14)
1Nachdem Jesus dies gesagt hatte, brach er mit seinen Jüngern auf. Sie überquerten den Kidronbach. Auf der anderen Seite befand sich ein Garten, und Jesus ging mit seinen Jüngern hinein. (Mt 26:47; Mr 14:32; Mr 14:43; Lu 22:39; Lu 22:47)2Der Verräter Judas kannte diesen Ort gut, denn Jesus war dort oft mit seinen Jüngern zusammen gewesen. (Joh 12:4)3Er nahm also die Soldaten der römischen Besatzung[1] und einige Gerichtspolizisten, die von den führenden Priestern und den Pharisäern mitgeschickt wurden, und kam dorthin. Die Männer waren bewaffnet und trugen Fackeln und Laternen.4Im vollen Wissen um alles, was nun mit ihm geschehen würde, ging Jesus hinaus aus dem Garten, ihnen entgegen, und fragte sie: »Wen sucht ihr?«5»Jesus von Nazaret!«,[2] antworteten sie. »Ich bin es!«,[3] sagte Jesus. Der Verräter Judas stand bei ihnen.6Als Jesus zu ihnen sagte: »Ich bin es«, wichen sie zurück und fielen zu Boden.7Jesus fragte sie noch einmal: »Wen sucht ihr?« »Jesus von Nazaret!«, antworteten sie.8»Ich habe euch gesagt, ich bin es«, sagte Jesus. »Wenn ihr also mich sucht, dann lasst diese hier gehen.«9So bestätigte sich, was Jesus früher gesagt hatte: »Von denen, die du mir gegeben hast, Vater, habe ich keinen verloren.« (Joh 6:39)10Simon Petrus hatte ein Schwert. Er zog es, holte gegen den Bevollmächtigten des Obersten Priesters aus und schlug ihm das rechte Ohr ab. Der Bevollmächtigte hieß Malchus. (Lu 22:36; Lu 22:38)11Jesus sagte zu Petrus: »Steck dein Schwert weg! Diesen Kelch[4] hat mein Vater für mich bestimmt. Muss ich ihn dann nicht trinken?« (Mr 10:38; Mr 14:36; Joh 12:27)
Jesus wird Hannas vorgeführt
12Die römischen Soldaten mit ihrem Kommandanten und die Gerichtspolizisten verhafteten Jesus, fesselten ihn (Mt 26:57; Mr 14:53; Lu 22:54)13und brachten ihn zuerst zu Hannas. Hannas war der Schwiegervater von Kajaphas, der in jenem Jahr das Amt des Obersten Priesters ausübte. (Lu 3:2; Joh 18:24)14Kajaphas war es, der den Ratsmitgliedern[5] klargemacht hatte, dass es von Vorteil sei, wenn ein Einziger für das ganze Volk sterbe. (Joh 11:49)
Petrus verleugnet Jesus
15Simon Petrus und ein anderer Jünger folgten Jesus. Der andere Jünger war mit dem Obersten Priester gut bekannt, deshalb konnte er mit Jesus bis in den Innenhof des Hauses gehen. (Mt 26:69; Mr 14:54; Mr 14:66; Lu 22:55)16Petrus blieb draußen am Tor stehen. Der andere Jünger, der Bekannte des Obersten Priesters, kam wieder zurück, verhandelte mit der Pförtnerin und nahm dann Petrus mit hinein.17Die Pförtnerin fragte Petrus: »Bist du nicht auch ein Jünger von diesem Menschen?« »Nein, das bin ich nicht«, antwortete Petrus.18Es war kalt. Die Diener des Obersten Priesters und die Gerichtspolizisten hatten deshalb einen Stoß Holzkohlen angezündet, standen um das Feuer herum und wärmten sich. Petrus ging hin, stellte sich zu ihnen und wärmte sich auch.
Hannas verhört Jesus
19Der Oberste Priester fragte Jesus nach seinen Jüngern und nach seiner Lehre.20Jesus antwortete: »Ich habe immer offen vor aller Welt gesprochen. Ich habe in den Synagogen und im Tempel gelehrt, wo sich alle Juden treffen, und habe niemals etwas im Geheimen gesagt. (Mt 4:23; Mr 14:49; Joh 6:59; Ac 26:26)21Warum fragst du dann mich? Frag doch die Leute, die meine Worte gehört haben! Sie wissen es.«22Als Jesus das sagte, schlug ihn einer der Gerichtspolizisten ins Gesicht und sagte: »Wie kannst du es wagen, so mit dem Obersten Priester zu sprechen?« (Joh 19:3; Ac 23:2)23Jesus erwiderte ihm: »Wenn ich etwas Unrechtes gesagt habe, dann weise es mir nach! Bin ich aber im Recht, warum schlägst du mich?«24Hannas schickte darauf Jesus in Fesseln zum Obersten Priester Kajaphas.
Petrus verleugnet Jesus noch einmal
25Simon Petrus stand noch immer beim Feuer und wärmte sich. Da sagten die anderen zu ihm: »Bist du nicht auch einer von seinen Jüngern?« Petrus erwiderte: »Nein, ich bin es nicht!« (Mt 26:71; Mr 14:69; Lu 22:58)26Ein Diener des Obersten Priesters, ein Verwandter des Mannes, dem Petrus das Ohr abgeschlagen hatte, sagte: »Ich habe dich doch mit eigenen Augen bei ihm in dem Garten gesehen!« (Joh 18:10)27Wieder stritt Petrus es ab, und in diesem Augenblick krähte ein Hahn.
Jesus vor Pilatus
28Die führenden Priester[6] brachten Jesus am frühen Morgen von Kajaphas zum Palast des römischen Statthalters.[7] Sie selbst gingen nicht in den Palast hinein, weil sie nicht unrein werden wollten. Sonst hätten sie nicht am Passamahl teilnehmen können. (Mt 27:1; Mt 27:11; Mr 15:1; Lu 23:1)29Pilatus kam zu ihnen heraus und fragte: »Welche Anklage erhebt ihr gegen diesen Mann?«30Sie antworteten: »Wenn er kein Verbrecher wäre, hätten wir ihn dir nicht übergeben.«31»Nehmt ihr ihn doch«, sagte Pilatus, »und verurteilt ihn nach eurem eigenen Gesetz!« »Wir dürfen ja niemand hinrichten!«, erwiderten sie.32So ging in Erfüllung, was Jesus gesagt hatte, als er von der Art seines Todes sprach. (Mt 20:19; Joh 12:32)33Pilatus ging in den Palast zurück und ließ Jesus vorführen. »Bist du der König der Juden?«, fragte er ihn.34Jesus antwortete: »Bist du selbst auf diese Frage gekommen, oder haben dir andere von mir erzählt?«35Pilatus erwiderte: »Bin ich etwa ein Jude? Dein eigenes Volk und die führenden Priester[8] haben dich mir übergeben. Was hast du getan?«36Jesus sagte: »Mein Königtum stammt nicht von dieser Welt. Sonst hätten meine Leute dafür gekämpft, dass ich den Juden nicht in die Hände falle. Nein, mein Königtum ist von ganz anderer Art!« (Joh 6:15)37Da fragte Pilatus ihn: »Du bist also doch ein König?« Jesus antwortete: »Ja, ich bin ein König. Ich wurde geboren und bin in die Welt gekommen, um die Wahrheit offenbar zu machen und als Zeuge für sie einzutreten. Wem es um die Wahrheit geht, der hört auf mich.« (Joh 3:32; Joh 8:47; Joh 19:12; 1Ti 6:13; 1Jo 4:6)
Das Todesurteil
38»Wahrheit«, meinte Pilatus, »was ist das?« Pilatus ging wieder zu den führenden Priestern hinaus und sagte zu ihnen: »Ich sehe keinen Grund, ihn zu verurteilen. (Mt 27:15; Mr 15:6; Lu 23:13)39Es ist aber üblich, dass ich euch jedes Jahr zum Passafest einen Gefangenen freilasse. Soll ich euch den König der Juden freigeben?«40Sie schrien: »Nein, den nicht! Wir wollen Barabbas!« Barabbas aber war ein Straßenräuber.
