from Crossway1And the Lord appeared to him by the oaks[1] of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day. (Ge 13:18; Ge 14:13)2He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing in front of him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth (Ge 19:1; Heb 13:2)3and said, “O Lord,[2] if I have found favor in your sight, do not pass by your servant.4Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree, (Ge 19:2; Ge 24:32; Ge 43:24; Lu 7:44; Joh 13:14)5while I bring a morsel of bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on—since you have come to your servant.” So they said, “Do as you have said.” (Ge 19:8; Ge 33:10; Jud 19:5; Ps 104:15)6And Abraham went quickly into the tent to Sarah and said, “Quick! Three seahs[3] of fine flour! Knead it, and make cakes.”7And Abraham ran to the herd and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to a young man, who prepared it quickly.8Then he took curds and milk and the calf that he had prepared, and set it before them. And he stood by them under the tree while they ate.9They said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “She is in the tent.” (Ge 24:67)10The Lord said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife shall have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him. (Ge 17:19; Ge 17:21; Ge 18:14; Ge 21:2; 2Ki 4:16; Ro 9:9)11Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in years. The way of women had ceased to be with Sarah. (Ge 17:17; Ro 4:19; Heb 11:11)12So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I am worn out, and my lord is old, shall I have pleasure?” (Ge 17:17; Lu 1:18; 1Pe 3:6)13The Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?’14Is anything too hard[4] for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.” (Ge 18:10; Job 42:2; Jer 32:17; Jer 32:27; Zec 8:6; Mt 19:26; Lu 1:37)15But Sarah denied it,[5] saying, “I did not laugh,” for she was afraid. He said, “No, but you did laugh.”16Then the men set out from there, and they looked down toward Sodom. And Abraham went with them to set them on their way.17The Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, (Ps 25:14; Am 3:7; Joh 15:15)18seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? (Ge 12:3; Ge 22:18; Ge 26:4; Ac 3:25; Ga 3:8)19For I have chosen[6] him, that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice, so that the Lord may bring to Abraham what he has promised him.” (Am 3:2)20Then the Lord said, “Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin is very grave, (Ge 4:10; Ge 19:13; Isa 3:9; Eze 16:49; Jas 5:4)21I will go down to see whether they have done altogether[7] according to the outcry that has come to me. And if not, I will know.” (Ge 11:5; Ge 11:7; Ex 3:8; Jos 22:22)
Abraham Intercedes for Sodom
22So the men turned from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the Lord. (Ge 18:1; Ge 18:16; Ge 19:1; Ps 106:23; Jer 18:20)23Then Abraham drew near and said, “Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? (Ge 20:4; Nu 16:22; 2Sa 24:17)24Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city. Will you then sweep away the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous who are in it?25Far be it from you to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?” (De 32:4; Job 8:3; Job 8:20; Job 34:10; Ro 3:5)26And the Lord said, “If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake.” (Isa 65:8; Jer 5:1; Eze 22:30)27Abraham answered and said, “Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes. (Lu 18:1)28Suppose five of the fifty righteous are lacking. Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?” And he said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.”29Again he spoke to him and said, “Suppose forty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of forty I will not do it.”30Then he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak. Suppose thirty are found there.” He answered, “I will not do it, if I find thirty there.”31He said, “Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of twenty I will not destroy it.”32Then he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak again but this once. Suppose ten are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of ten I will not destroy it.” (Jud 6:39)33And the Lord went his way, when he had finished speaking to Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.

Abraham saß gerade in der Mittagshitze am Eingang seines Zeltes.2Als er aufblickte, sah er wenige Schritte vor sich drei Männer stehen. Sofort sprang er auf, warf sich vor ihnen nieder (Heb 13:2)3und sagte: »Mein Herr, wenn ich Gnade vor dir gefunden habe, dann geh nicht hier vorüber. Ich stehe dir zu Diensten!4Man wird euch sogleich Wasser bringen. Ihr könnt euch die Füße waschen und es euch unter dem Baum bequem machen.5Ich will inzwischen eine kleine Erfrischung holen, damit ihr euch stärken und dann euren Weg fortsetzen könnt. Wozu sonst seid ihr bei eurem Diener vorbeigekommen?« »Es ist gut«, sagten die Männer. »Tu, was du vorhast!«6Abraham lief sogleich ins Zelt und sagte zu Sara: »Schnell, nimm drei Backschüsseln[1] von deinem feinsten Mehl, mach einen Teig und backe Fladenbrot!«7Dann lief er zum Vieh, suchte ein schönes, gesundes Kalb aus und befahl dem Knecht, es zuzubereiten.8Er holte süße und saure Milch, nahm das gekochte Fleisch und trug alles hinaus unter den Baum. Mit eigener Hand bediente er seine Gäste und stand dabei, während sie aßen.9Nach dem Mahl fragten die Männer Abraham: »Wo ist deine Frau Sara?« »Drinnen im Zelt«, antwortete er.10Da sagte der HERR: »Nächstes Jahr um diese Zeit komme ich wieder zu dir, dann wird deine Frau einen Sohn haben.« Sara stand im Rücken Abrahams am Zelteingang und horchte. (Ge 21:1; Ro 9:9)11Die beiden waren damals schon alt, und Sara war schon lange über die Wechseljahre hinaus. (Ge 25:21; Ro 4:19)12Sie lachte in sich hinein und dachte: »Jetzt, wo ich alt und verwelkt bin, soll ich noch ein Kind empfangen? Und mein Mann ist auch viel zu alt!«13Da sagte der HERR zu Abraham: »Warum hat Sara gelacht? Warum zweifelt sie daran, dass sie noch ein Kind gebären wird?14Ist für den HERRN irgendetwas unmöglich? Nächstes Jahr um die verabredete Zeit komme ich wieder, dann hat Sara einen Sohn.« (Job 42:2)15»Ich habe doch nicht gelacht«, leugnete Sara. Sie hatte Angst bekommen. Aber der HERR sagte: »Doch, du hast gelacht!« (Ge 21:6)
Abraham bittet für Sodom
16Die Männer machten sich auf den Weg und Abraham begleitete sie ein Stück weit. Als sie an eine Stelle kamen, von der aus die Stadt Sodom zu sehen war,17dachte der HERR: »Soll ich wirklich vor Abraham verheimlichen, was ich mit Sodom vorhabe?18Ich habe ihm doch zugesagt, er soll der Vater eines großen und mächtigen Volkes werden; und am Verhalten zu ihm und seinen Nachkommen wird sich für alle Völker der Erde Glück und Segen entscheiden.[2] (Ge 12:2; Ge 12:3)19Ich habe ihn ausgewählt, damit er seine Söhne und seine weiteren Nachkommen dazu anhält, meinen Geboten zu folgen; er soll sie lehren, zu tun, was recht ist, sodass ich meine Zusage an ihn einlösen kann.«20Darum sagte der HERR zu Abraham: »Über die Leute von Sodom und Gomorra sind schwere Klagen zu mir gedrungen. Ihre Schuld schreit zum Himmel. (Ge 19:5; De 32:32; Isa 1:10; Isa 3:9; Jer 23:14; La 4:6; Eze 16:48; Jud 1:7; Re 11:8; Sir 16:8)21Deshalb will ich jetzt hingehen und mit eigenen Augen sehen, ob das wahr ist, was ich gehört habe. Ich will wissen, ob sie es wirklich so schlimm treiben.«22Zwei der Männer gingen in Richtung Sodom, während der HERR bei Abraham zurückblieb.[3]23Abraham trat an ihn heran und sagte: »Willst du wirklich Schuldige und Schuldlose ohne Unterschied vernichten?24Vielleicht gibt es in Sodom fünfzig Leute, die kein Unrecht getan haben. Willst du sie auch umkommen lassen und nicht lieber die ganze Stadt verschonen wegen der fünfzig?25Du kannst doch nicht die Unschuldigen zusammen mit den Schuldigen töten und die einen genauso behandeln wie die andern? Du bist der oberste Richter der ganzen Erde, darum darfst du nicht selbst gegen das Recht verstoßen!«26Der HERR sagte: »Wenn ich in Sodom fünfzig Unschuldige finde, will ich ihretwegen die ganze Stadt verschonen.«27Abraham wandte sich noch einmal an den HERRN: »Ich habe es gewagt, dir dreinzureden, Herr, obwohl ich Staub und Asche bin.28Vielleicht gibt es wenigstens fünfundvierzig, die nicht schuldig geworden sind. Willst du dann wegen der fehlenden fünf die ganze Stadt vernichten?« Der HERR antwortete: »Ich verschone sie, wenn ich fünfundvierzig finde.«29Abraham gab sich noch nicht zufrieden. »Und wenn es nur vierzig sind?«, fragte er. Der HERR erwiderte: »Dann verschone ich sie wegen der vierzig.«30»Bitte, Herr«, sagte Abraham, »werde nicht zornig über mich, wenn ich noch weitergehe. Vielleicht sind es nur dreißig.« »Dann verschone ich sie wegen der dreißig.«31Noch einmal fing Abraham an: »Ich habe es nun einmal gewagt, dir dreinzureden, Herr! Vielleicht sind es nur zwanzig.« »Ich verschone sie auch wegen zwanzig.«32»Nur noch ein einziges Mal lass mich reden, Herr«, sagte Abraham; »werde nicht zornig! Vielleicht sind es auch nur zehn.« Und der HERR sagte: »Ich verschone sie auch wegen zehn.« (Jer 5:1)33Damit brach der HERR das Gespräch ab. Er ging weiter und Abraham kehrte heim.
