Israel Demands a King

1 When Samuel became old, he made his sons judges over Israel. (De 16:18) 2 The name of his firstborn son was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judges in Beersheba. 3 Yet his sons did not walk in his ways but turned aside after gain. They took bribes and perverted justice. (Ex 18:21; Ex 23:8; De 16:19; Ps 15:5)

4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah (1Sa 7:17) 5 and said to him, “Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations.” (De 17:14; 1Sa 8:19; Ho 13:10; Ac 13:21)

6 But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” And Samuel prayed to the Lord. 7 And the Lord said to Samuel, “Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them. (Ex 16:8; 1Sa 10:19) 8 According to all the deeds that they have done, from the day I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are also doing to you. 9 Now then, obey their voice; only you shall solemnly warn them and show them the ways of the king who shall reign over them.” (1Sa 8:11)

Samuel’s Warning Against Kings

10 So Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking for a king from him. 11 He said, “These will be the ways of the king who will reign over you: he will take your sons and appoint them to his chariots and to be his horsemen and to run before his chariots. (De 17:16; 1Sa 10:25; 1Sa 14:52) 12 And he will appoint for himself commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and some to plow his ground and to reap his harvest, and to make his implements of war and the equipment of his chariots. (Ge 45:6) 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. 14 He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive orchards and give them to his servants. (1Ki 21:7; Eze 46:18) 15 He will take the tenth of your grain and of your vineyards and give it to his officers and to his servants. 16 He will take your male servants and female servants and the best of your young men^[1] and your donkeys, and put them to his work. 17 He will take the tenth of your flocks, and you shall be his slaves. 18 And in that day you will cry out because of your king, whom you have chosen for yourselves, but the Lord will not answer you in that day.” (Pr 1:28; Isa 1:15; Mic 3:4)

The Lord Grants Israel’s Request

19 But the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel. And they said, “No! But there shall be a king over us, 20 that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.” (1Sa 8:5) 21 And when Samuel had heard all the words of the people, he repeated them in the ears of the Lord. 22 And the Lord said to Samuel, “Obey their voice and make them a king.” Samuel then said to the men of Israel, “Go every man to his city.” (1Sa 8:7; Ho 13:11)

Samuel warnt vor einem König

1 Als Samuel alt wurde, setzte er seine Söhne als Richter über die Israeliten ein. 2 Der ältere hieß Joël, der jüngere Abija. Sie übten ihr Richteramt in Beerscheba aus. (1Ch 6:13) 3 Doch sie folgten nicht dem Vorbild ihres Vaters, sondern suchten sich zu bereichern. Sie ließen sich durch Bestechung in ihrem Urteil beeinflussen. 4 Da kamen alle Ältesten Israels zusammen und gingen zu Samuel nach Rama. 5 Sie sagten zu ihm: »Du bist alt geworden und deine Söhne folgen nicht deinem Beispiel. Setze deshalb einen König über uns ein, der bei uns für Recht sorgt, wie es bei allen Völkern üblich ist!« (De 17:14; 1Sa 8:20) 6 Samuel war nicht damit einverstanden, dass sie einen König haben wollten. Er wandte sich an den HERRN, (Jud 8:23; 1Sa 12:12) 7 aber der antwortete ihm: »Erfülle ihnen nur ihren Wunsch! Nicht dich lehnen sie ab, sondern mich. Ich soll nicht länger ihr König sein! (Ex 15:18; De 33:5) 8 Seit ich sie aus Ägypten herausgeführt habe, sind sie mir immer wieder untreu geworden und haben sich anderen Göttern zugewandt. Das ist bis heute so geblieben. Jetzt ergeht es dir ebenso. 9 Tu ihnen den Willen! Aber sage ihnen zuvor in aller Deutlichkeit, was der König, der über sie herrschen wird, für Rechte hat und was er mit ihnen tun kann.« 10 Samuel sagte dem Volk, das einen König von ihm verlangte, alles, was der HERR ihm aufgetragen hatte. 11 Er sagte: »Ihr müsst euch im Klaren darüber sein, welche Rechte ein König für sich in Anspruch nehmen wird. Er wird eure Söhne in seinen Dienst holen, damit sie für seine Pferde und Wagen sorgen und vor ihm herlaufen, wenn er ausfährt. 12 Einen Teil wird er zu Hauptleuten und Obersten machen, andere müssen seine Felder bestellen und abernten, wieder andere Waffen und Streitwagen herstellen. 13 Auch eure Töchter wird er an seinen Hof holen, damit sie für ihn kochen und backen und ihm Salben bereiten. 14 Die besten Felder, Weinberge und Ölbaumpflanzungen wird er euch wegnehmen und seinen Beamten geben. 15 Von dem Ertrag eurer Felder und Weinberge wird er den zehnten Teil eintreiben und damit seine Hofleute und Diener bezahlen. 16-17 Auch von euren Schafen und Ziegen wird er den zehnten Teil für sich nehmen. Eure Knechte und Mägde, eure besten jungen Leute und auch eure Esel wird er für sich arbeiten lassen. Ihr alle werdet seine Sklaven sein! 18 Wenn es so weit ist, würdet ihr den König, den ihr jetzt verlangt, gerne wieder loswerden. Dann werdet ihr zum HERRN schreien, aber er wird euch nicht helfen.« 19 Doch das Volk wollte nicht auf Samuel hören. Alle riefen: »Nein, wir wollen einen König! 20 Es soll bei uns genauso sein wie bei den anderen Völkern! Ein König soll uns Recht sprechen und uns im Krieg anführen!« 21 Samuel hörte sich alles an und berichtete es dem HERRN. 22 Der HERR antwortete ihm: »Gib ihrer Forderung nach und setze einen König über sie ein!« Dann schickte Samuel die Männer Israels wieder nach Hause.
