Sennacherib Invades Judah

1 In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and took them. (2Ki 18:13; 2Ki 18:17; 2Ch 32:1) 2 And the king of Assyria sent the Rabshakeh^[1] from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem, with a great army. And he stood by the conduit of the upper pool on the highway to the Washer’s Field. (Jos 15:20; Jos 15:39; 2Ch 32:9; Isa 7:3)

3 And there came out to him Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the secretary, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder. (Isa 22:15; Isa 22:20) 4 And the Rabshakeh said to them, “Say to Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: On what do you rest this trust of yours? (Isa 10:8) 5 Do you think that mere words are strategy and power for war? In whom do you now trust, that you have rebelled against me? 6 Behold, you are trusting in Egypt, that broken reed of a staff, which will pierce the hand of any man who leans on it. Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him. (Eze 29:6) 7 But if you say to me, “We trust in the Lord our God,” is it not he whose high places and altars Hezekiah has removed, saying to Judah and to Jerusalem, “You shall worship before this altar”? (De 12:2; 2Ki 18:4) 8 Come now, make a wager with my master the king of Assyria: I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders on them. 9 How then can you repulse a single captain among the least of my master’s servants, when you trust in Egypt for chariots and for horsemen? 10 Moreover, is it without the Lord that I have come up against this land to destroy it? The Lord said to me, “Go up against this land and destroy it.”’” (Isa 10:5) 11 Then Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it. Do not speak to us in the language of Judah within the hearing of the people who are on the wall.” (Ezr 4:7; Da 2:4) 12 But the Rabshakeh said, “Has my master sent me to speak these words to your master and to you, and not to the men sitting on the wall, who are doomed with you to eat their own dung and drink their own urine?” 13 Then the Rabshakeh stood and called out in a loud voice in the language of Judah: “Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria! 14 Thus says the king: ‘Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he will not be able to deliver you. (2Ch 32:6; Isa 37:10) 15 Do not let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord by saying, “The Lord will surely deliver us. This city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.” 16 Do not listen to Hezekiah. For thus says the king of Assyria: Make your peace with me^[2] and come out to me. Then each one of you will eat of his own vine, and each one of his own fig tree, and each one of you will drink the water of his own cistern, 17 until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and wine, a land of bread and vineyards. (2Ki 18:11) 18 Beware lest Hezekiah mislead you by saying, “The Lord will deliver us.” Has any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria? 19 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria out of my hand? (2Ki 17:6; Isa 37:13; Jer 49:23) 20 Who among all the gods of these lands have delivered their lands out of my hand, that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?’” (2Ch 32:19) 21 But they were silent and answered him not a word, for the king’s command was, “Do not answer him.” 22 Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the secretary, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of the Rabshakeh. Erste Gesandtschaft Sanheribs

1 Und es geschah im vierzehnten Jahr des Königs Hiskija, da zog Sanherib, der König von Assur, gegen alle befestigten Städte Judas und nahm sie ein. (2Ki 18:13; 2Ch 32:1) 2 Der König von Assur sandte den Rabschake mit einer großen Streitmacht von Lachisch aus nach Jerusalem gegen König Hiskija. Er stellte sich an der Wasserleitung des oberen Teiches auf, der an der Walkerfeldstraße liegt. 3 Der Palastvorsteher Eljakim, der Sohn Hilkijas, der Staatsschreiber Schebna und der Sprecher des Königs Joach, der Sohn Asafs, gingen zu ihm hinaus. 4 Da sagte der Rabschake zu ihnen: Sagt zu Hiskija: So spricht der Großkönig, der König von Assur: Was ist das für ein Vertrauen, auf das du vertraut hast? 5 Du dachtest wohl, bloßes Gerede sei im Krieg schon Rat und Stärke? Auf wen hast du vertraut, dass du dich gegen mich aufgelehnt hast? 6 Siehe, du hast vertraut auf Ägypten, dieses geknickte Schilfrohr, das jedem, der sich darauf stützt, in die Hand dringt und sie durchbohrt. Denn so ist der Pharao, der König von Ägypten, für alle, die auf ihn vertrauen. (Eze 29:6) 7 Wenn du aber zu mir sagst: Auf den HERRN, unseren Gott, haben wir vertraut. - Ist nicht er es, dessen Kulthöhen und Altäre Hiskija beseitigt hat? Und er sagte zu Juda und zu Jerusalem: Nur vor diesem Altar in Jerusalem dürft ihr euch niederwerfen! 8 Und nun: Geh doch mit meinem Herrn, dem König von Assur, eine Wette ein! Ich gebe dir zweitausend Pferde, wenn du die Reiter für sie stellen kannst. 9 Wie willst du auch nur einen einzigen Statthalter in die Flucht schlagen, einen von den geringsten Knechten meines Herrn? Und du setztest dein Vertrauen auf Ägypten - auf die Wagen und Reiter. 10 Und nun, bin ich denn ohne den HERRN gegen dieses Land heraufgezogen, um es zu verwüsten? Der HERR hat zu mir gesagt: Zieh hinauf gegen dieses Land und verwüste es! 11 Da sagten Eljakim, Schebna und Joach zu dem Rabschake: Sprich doch aramäisch mit deinen Knechten, denn wir verstehen es. Sprich vor den Ohren des Volkes, das auf der Mauer steht, nicht judäisch mit uns! 12 Doch der Rabschake sagte: Hat mich mein Herr etwa nur zu deinem Herrn und zu dir gesandt, um diese Worte zu sprechen, und nicht vielmehr zu den Männern, die auf der Mauer sitzen, um mit euch ihren Kot zu essen und ihren Harn zu trinken? 13 Dann stellte sich der Rabschake hin und rief mit lauter Stimme auf Judäisch: Hört die Worte des Großkönigs, des Königs von Assur! 14 So spricht der König: Hiskija täusche euch nicht, denn er kann euch nicht retten. 15 Hiskija soll euch nicht verleiten, auf den HERRN zu vertrauen, indem er sagt: Der HERR wird uns sicher retten, diese Stadt wird dem König von Assur nicht in die Hände fallen. 16 Hört nicht auf Hiskija! Denn so spricht der König von Assur: Schließt mit mir Frieden, euch zum Segen, und kommt zu mir heraus und esst - jeder von seinem Weinstock und jeder von seinem Feigenbaum, und trinkt - jeder das Wasser seiner Zisterne, 17 bis ich komme und euch in ein Land mitnehme, das eurem Land gleicht: ein Land von Getreide und Most, ein Land von Brot und Wein. 18 Hiskija verführe euch nicht, wenn er sagt: Der HERR wird uns retten. Hat denn einer von den Göttern der Nationen sein Land vor dem König von Assur gerettet? 19 Wo sind die Götter von Hamat und Arpad? Wo sind die Götter von Sefarwajim? Haben sie etwa Samaria aus meiner Hand gerettet? 20 Wer von all den Göttern dieser Länder hat sein Land aus meiner Hand gerettet, sodass der HERR Jerusalem aus meiner Hand retten könnte? 21 Da schwiegen sie und antworteten ihm mit keinem Wort, denn der Befehl des Königs lautete: Ihr sollt ihm nicht antworten! 22 Da kamen der Palastvorsteher Eljakim, der Sohn Hilkijas, der Staatsschreiber Schebna und der Sprecher des Königs, Joach, der Sohn Asafs, mit zerrissenen Kleidern zu Hiskija und berichteten ihm, was der Rabschake gesagt hatte.

Ma non è forse quello stesso di cui Ezechia ha soppresso gli alti luoghi e gli altari, dicendo a Giuda e a Gerusalemme: ‘Voi adorerete davanti a questo altare’? 8 Ora fa’ una scommessa con il mio signore, il re d’Assiria: io ti darò duemila cavalli se tu puoi fornire altrettanti cavalieri da cavalcarli. 9 Come potresti tu far voltare le spalle a un ufficiale, uno dei minimi servitori del mio signore? Ma tu confidi nell’Egitto per avere carri e cavalieri. 10 Adesso sono forse salito senza il volere del Signore contro questo paese per distruggerlo? Il Signore mi ha detto: ‘Sali contro questo paese e distruggilo!’”». 11 Allora Eliachim, Sebna e Ioa dissero a Rabsachè: «Ti prego, parla ai tuoi servi in lingua aramaica, poiché noi la comprendiamo; non parlarci in lingua giudaica, poiché il popolo che sta sulle mura ascolta». 12 Ma Rabsachè rispose: «Il mio signore mi ha forse mandato a dire queste parole al tuo signore e a te solamente? Non mi ha forse mandato a dirle a questi uomini che stanno sulle mura e che presto saranno ridotti a mangiare i loro escrementi e a bere la loro urina con voi?» 13 Allora Rabsachè, stando in piedi, gridò ad alta voce e disse in lingua giudaica: «Udite le parole del gran re, del re d’Assiria! 14 Così parla il re: “Non v’inganni Ezechia, poiché egli non potrà liberarvi; 15 né vi faccia Ezechia riporre la vostra fiducia nel Signore, dicendo: ‘Il Signore ci libererà di certo; questa città non sarà data nelle mani del re d’Assiria’. 16 Non date retta a Ezechia, perché così dice il re d’Assiria: ‘Fate la pace con me, arrendetevi a me, e ognuno di voi mangerà il frutto della sua vite e del suo fico e berrà l’acqua della sua cisterna, 17 finché io venga e vi conduca in un paese simile al vostro: paese di grano e di vino, paese di pane e di vigne’. 18 Non v’inganni Ezechia dicendovi: ‘Il Signore ci libererà’. Qualcuno degli dèi delle nazioni ha forse liberato il suo paese dalle mani del re d’Assiria? 19 Dove sono gli dèi di Camat e di Arpad? Dove sono gli dèi di Sefarvaim? Hanno forse liberato Samaria dalla mia mano? 20 Fra tutti gli dèi di questi paesi quali sono quelli che hanno liberato il loro paese dalla mia mano? Il Signore potrà forse liberare Gerusalemme dalla mia mano?”». 21 E quelli tacquero e non risposero nulla, perché il re aveva dato quest’ordine: «Non gli rispondete». 22 Eliachim, figlio di Chilchia, sovrintendente del palazzo, Sebna, il segretario, e Ioa, figlio di Asaf, l’archivista, andarono da Ezechia con le vesti stracciate e gli riferirono le parole di Rabsachè.
