Balak Summons Balaam

1 Then the people of Israel set out and camped in the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan at Jericho. (Nu 26:3; Nu 26:63; Nu 31:12; Nu 33:48; Nu 33:50; Nu 35:1; Nu 36:13)

2 And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites. (Jud 11:25) 3 And Moab was in great dread of the people, because they were many. Moab was overcome with fear of the people of Israel. (Ex 15:15) 4 And Moab said to the elders of Midian, “This horde will now lick up all that is around us, as the ox licks up the grass of the field.” So Balak the son of Zippor, who was king of Moab at that time, (Nu 31:8; Jos 13:21) 5 sent messengers to Balaam the son of Beor at Pethor, which is near the River^[1] in the land of the people of Amaw,^[2] to call him, saying, “Behold, a people has come out of Egypt. They cover the face of the earth, and they are dwelling opposite me. (De 23:4; De 23:7; Jos 24:9; Ne 13:2; Mic 6:5; 2Pe 2:15; Jud 1:11; Re 2:14)

6 Come now, curse this people for me, since they are too mighty for me. Perhaps I shall be able to defeat them and drive them from the land, for I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed.” (Nu 23:7) 7 So the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the fees for divination in their hand. And they came to Balaam and gave him Balak’s message. (Nu 4:1; 1Sa 9:7; 1Sa 9:8; Mic 3:11)

8 And he said to them, “Lodge here tonight, and I will bring back word to you, as the LORD speaks to me.” So the princes of Moab stayed with Balaam. 9 And God came to Balaam and said, “Who are these men with you?” (Ge 20:3; Job 33:15; Job 33:16) 10 And Balaam said to God, “Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent to me, saying, 11 ‘Behold, a people has come out of Egypt, and it covers the face of the earth. Now come, curse them for me. Perhaps I shall be able to fight against them and drive them out.’” 12 God said to Balaam, “You shall not go with them. You shall not curse the people, for they are blessed.” (Nu 23:20) 13 So Balaam rose in the morning and said to the princes of Balak, “Go to your own land, for the LORD has refused to let me go with you.” 14 So the princes of Moab rose and went to Balak and said, “Balaam refuses to come with us.” 15 Once again Balak sent princes, more in number and more honorable than these. 16 And they came to Balaam and said to him, “Thus says Balak the son of Zippor: ‘Let nothing hinder you from coming to me, 17 for I will surely do you great honor, and whatever you say to me I will do. Come, curse this people for me.’” (Nu 22:11; Nu 22:37; Nu 24:11) 18 But Balaam answered and said to the servants of Balak, “Though Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go beyond the command of the LORD my God to do less or more. 19 So you, too, please stay here tonight, that I may know what more the LORD will say to me.” (Nu 22:8) 20 And God came to Balaam at night and said to him, “If the men have come to call you, rise, go with them; but only do what I tell you.” (Nu 9:1; Nu 22:35; Nu 23:12; Nu 23:26; Nu 24:13)

21 So Balaam rose in the morning and saddled his donkey and went with the princes of Moab.

Balaam’s Donkey and the Angel

22 But God’s anger was kindled because he went, and the angel of the LORD took his stand in the way as his adversary. Now he was riding on the donkey, and his two servants were with him. (Ex 4:24; Nu 22:32; 1Ch 21:16) 23 And the donkey saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road, with a drawn sword in his hand. And the donkey turned aside out of the road and went into the field. And Balaam struck the donkey, to turn her into the road. 24 Then the angel of the LORD stood in a narrow path between the vineyards, with a wall on either side. 25 And when the donkey saw the angel of the LORD, she pushed against the wall and pressed Balaam’s foot against the wall. So he struck her again. 26 Then the angel of the LORD went ahead and stood in a narrow place, where there was no way to turn either to the right or to the left. 27 When the donkey saw the angel of the LORD, she lay down under Balaam. And Balaam’s anger was kindled, and he struck the donkey with his staff. 28 Then the LORD opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?” (2Pe 2:16) 29 And Balaam said to the donkey, “Because you have made a fool of me. I wish I had a sword in my hand, for then I would kill you.” 30 And the donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey, on which you have ridden all your life long to this day? Is it my habit to treat you this way?” And he said, “No.” 31 Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, with his drawn sword in his hand. 32 And the angel of the LORD said to him, “Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out to oppose you because your way is perverse^[3] before me. (Nu 22:22) 33 The donkey saw me and turned aside before me these three times. If she had not turned aside from me, surely just now I would have killed you and let her live.” 34 Then Balaam said to the angel of the LORD, “I have sinned, for I did not know that you stood in the road against me. 35 And the angel of the LORD said to Balaam, “Go with the men, but speak only the word that I tell you.” So Balaam went on with the princes of Balak. (Nu 22:20) 36 When Balak heard that Balaam had come, he went out to meet him at the city of Moab, on the border formed by the Arnon, at the extremity of the border. (Nu 21:13) 37 And Balak said to Balaam, “Did I not send to you to call you? Why did you not come to me? Am I not able to honor you?” (Nu 22:17; Nu 24:11) 38 Balaam said to Balak, “Behold, I have come to you! Have I now any power of my own to speak anything? The word that God puts in my mouth, that must I speak.” (Nu 22:18) 39 Then Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kiriath-huzoth. 40 And Balak sacrificed oxen and sheep, and sent for Balaam and for the princes who were with him. 41 And in the morning Balak took Balaam and brought him up to Bamoth-baal, and from there he saw a fraction of the people.

上帝拦阻巴兰

22 巴兰这一去，激怒了上帝。巴兰骑着驴，带着两个仆人正走在途中，耶和华的天使拦住他的去路。 23 驴看见耶和华的天使持刀拦在路上，就离开大路，跑进田间。巴兰鞭打它，要它回到路上。 24 耶和华的天使又站在葡萄园之间的一条窄路上，两边都是墙。 25 驴看见耶和华的天使，就靠着墙边走，将巴兰的脚挤伤了。巴兰又鞭打它。 26 耶和华的天使又走到前面，站在狭窄之处，两边都无侧身通过的余地。 27 驴看见耶和华的天使，就卧在地上，巴兰大怒，便用杖打它。 28 耶和华使驴开口对巴兰说：“我做错了什么，你竟打我三次！” 29 巴兰说：“因为你戏弄我。如果我手中有刀，早就把你宰了！” 30 驴对巴兰说：“我是你从小就骑的驴，我可曾这样对你？”巴兰说：“没有。” 31 那时，耶和华开了巴兰的眼，他才看见耶和华的天使持刀拦在路上，便俯伏在地。 32 耶和华的天使对他说：“你为何三次打你的驴？我特意来阻挡你，因为你走的路在我眼中是邪路。 33 你的驴看见我，一连躲避了三次，驴若没有躲开，我早已杀了你，只放过驴。” 34 巴兰对耶和华的天使说：“我有罪了，我不知道是你拦在路上。如果你反对我去，我就回去。” 35 耶和华的天使说：“跟这些人去吧，但你只许按我的指示说话。”于是，巴兰跟巴勒的使臣去了。 36 巴勒听见巴兰来了，就来到边界尽头、亚嫩河边的摩押城迎接他。 37 巴勒对巴兰说：“上次派人请你，你为何不肯来？难道我不能给你重赏吗？” 38 巴兰说：“现在我已经来了，但我不能随便发言，只能按上帝的指示说话。” 39 巴兰和巴勒一同来到基列·胡琐。 40 巴勒宰牛杀羊赏给巴兰和随行的臣仆。 41 次日清晨，巴勒领巴兰上到巴力巴末^[1]，从那里可以看到一部分以色列人。

Balac y Balaam

1 Partieron los hijos de Israel y acamparon en las llanuras de Moab, a este lado del Jordán, frente a Jericó. 2 Y Balac hijo de Zippor, vio todo lo que Israel había hecho a los amorreos. 3 Y Moab tuvo gran temor delante del pueblo, porque era muy numeroso. Y se aterrorizó Moab a causa de los hijos de Israel. 4 Entonces dijo Moab a los ancianos de Madián: Ahora, como el buey lame la hierba del campo, esta multitud lamerá todos nuestros contornos. En aquel tiempo Balac hijo de Zippor, era rey de Moab. 5 Y envió mensajeros a Balaam hijo de Beor, en Petor, que está junto al río, en la tierra de los hijos de su pueblo para que lo llamaran, diciendo: Un pueblo que ha salido de Egipto cubre la superficie de la tierra y ya está frente a mí. 6 Ven ahora, te ruego, y maldíceme a este pueblo porque es demasiado poderoso para mí. Así los jerarcas de Moab se quedaron con Balaam. 9 Y vino ’Elohim a Balaam, y le dijo: ¿Qué varones son estos que están contigo? 10 Y Balaam dijo a ’Elohim: Balac hijo de Zippor, rey de Moab, ha enviado por mí, diciendo: 11 He aquí, el pueblo que salió de Egipto cubre la faz de la tierra. Ven pues ahora, y maldícemelo. Quizá pueda yo luchar contra él y echarlo. 12 Entonces ’Elohim dijo a Balaam: No irás con ellos ni maldecirás al pueblo, porque él es bendito. 13 Balaam se levantó de mañana y dijo a los jerarcas de Balac: Volveos a vuestra tierra, porque YHVH se niega a dejarme ir con vosotros. 14 Y los jerarcas de Moab se levantaron y fueron a Balac y le dijeron: Balaam se negó a venir con nosotros. 15 Pero Balac continuó enviando emisarios más numerosos y honorables que aquellos otros, 16 los cuales fueron a Balaam, y le dijeron: Así dice Balac hijo de Zippor: Te ruego que no te niegues a venir a mí, 17 porque ciertamente te honraré en gran manera y haré todo lo que me digas. Ven pues ahora, maldíceme a este pueblo. 18 Balaam respondió y dijo a los siervos de Balac: Aunque Balac me diera su casa llena de plata y oro, no puedo traspasar el dicho de YHVH mi Dios para hacer cosa pequeña ni grande. 19 Os ruego ahora que os quedéis aquí esta noche, y sabré qué continuará hablando conmigo YHVH. 20 Y vino ’Elohim a Balaam de noche y le dijo: Si los hombres han venido para llamarte, levántate y ve con ellos, pero le dirás solo la palabra que Yo hable contigo. 21 Así Balaam se levantó por la mañana, enalbardó su asna, y fue con los jerarcas de Moab. 22 Pero mientras él iba, la ira de Dios se encendió, y el ángel de YHVH se colocó en el camino para oponerse a él. Y él iba montado en su asna, y sus dos siervos con él, 23 cuando el asna vio al ángel de YHVH colocado en el camino con su espada desenvainada en su mano, el asna se desvió del camino y se fue por el campo. Entonces Balaam azotó al asna para hacerla volver al camino. 24 Pero el ángel de YHVH estaba en pie en un sendero entre las viñas, el cual tenía una cerca a un lado y otra cerca al otro lado. 25 Al ver al ángel de YHVH, el asna se pegó contra la cerca apretando el pie de Balaam contra la cerca, y él volvió a azotarla. 26 Entonces el ángel de YHVH pasó más allá, y se puso en pie en una angostura donde no había camino para desviarse ni a derecha ni a izquierda. 27 Al ver al ángel de YHVH, el asna se echó debajo de Balaam, y Balaam se enojó y azotó al asna con la vara. 28 Entonces YHVH le abrió la boca al asna, la cual dijo a Balaam: ¿Qué te he hecho, que me has azotado ya tres veces? 29 Y Balaam respondió al asna: Porque me has maltratado: ¡Si tuviera una espada en mi mano, ahora mismo te mataría! 30 Y el asna dijo a Balaam: ¿No soy yo tu asna, en la que has cabalgado toda tu vida hasta hoy? ¿Acostumbro hacerte esto? Y él respondió: No. 31 Entonces YHVH abrió los ojos a Balaam, y vio al ángel de YHVH de pie en el camino con su espada desenvainada en la mano. Y Balaam hizo reverencia, y se postró sobre su rostro. 32 Y el ángel de YHVH le dijo: ¿Por qué has azotado a tu asna estas tres veces? He aquí Yo he salido para oponerme a ti, porque tu camino es perverso delante de mí. 33 Y el asna me ha visto y se ha apartado de delante de mí estas tres veces, y si no se hubiera apartado de mí, Yo te habría matado a ti, y a ella la habría dejado viva. 34 Entonces Balaam dijo al ángel de YHVH: He pecado, porque no sabía que Tú te colocabas en el camino para salir a mi encuentro. Pero ahora, si es malo delante de tus ojos, me volveré. 35 El ángel de YHVH dijo a Balaam: Ve con los varones, pero sólo hablarás la palabra que Yo te hable. Y Balaam se fue con los jefes de Balac. 36 Oyendo Balac que Balaam venía, salió a su encuentro a la ciudad de Moab que está junto al término del Arnón, límite del territorio. 37 Y Balac dijo a Balaam: ¿No envié a llamarte? ¿Por qué no venías a mí? ¿Acaso no soy capaz de honrarte? 38 Balaam respondió a Balac: ¡He aquí, ya he venido a ti! Pero… ¿podré hablar algo? La palabra que ’Elohim ponga en mi boca, esa tendré que hablar. 39 Y Balaam fue con Balac, y llegaron a Queriat-hutsot. 40 Y Balac sacrificó bueyes y ovejas que dio a Balaam y a los jefes que estaban con él. 41 Y aconteció que por la mañana Balac tomó a Balaam, y lo hizo subir a Bamot-Baal, y desde allí contempló el extremo del pueblo.
