1 Now these are the nations that the Lord left, to test Israel by them, that is, all in Israel who had not experienced all the wars in Canaan. (Jud 2:21; Jud 3:4) 2 It was only in order that the generations of the people of Israel might know war, to teach war to those who had not known it before. 3 These are the nations: the five lords of the Philistines and all the Canaanites and the Sidonians and the Hivites who lived on Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal-hermon as far as Lebo-hamath. (Jos 13:2) 4 They were for the testing of Israel, to know whether Israel would obey the commandments of the Lord, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses. (Jud 3:1) 5 So the people of Israel lived among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. (Ex 3:8; Ps 106:35) 6 And their daughters they took to themselves for wives, and their own daughters they gave to their sons, and they served their gods. (Ex 34:16; De 7:3; Ezr 9:12)

Othniel

7 And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. They forgot the Lord their God and served the Baals and the Asheroth. (Ex 34:13; Jud 2:11; Jud 6:25) 8 Therefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia. And the people of Israel served Cushan-rishathaim eight years. (Jud 2:14; Hab 3:7) 9 But when the people of Israel cried out to the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer for the people of Israel, who saved them, Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. (Jud 1:13; Jud 2:16; Jud 3:15; Jud 4:3; Jud 6:7; Jud 10:10; Ne 9:27)

10 The Spirit of the Lord was upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the Lord gave Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand. And his hand prevailed over Cushan-rishathaim. (Jud 6:34; Jud 11:29; Jud 13:25; Jud 14:6; Jud 14:19; Jud 15:14)

11 So the land had rest forty years. Then Othniel the son of Kenaz died. (Jos 11:23; Jud 3:30; Jud 5:31; Jud 8:28)

Ehud

12 And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done what was evil in the sight of the Lord. (Jud 2:19; 1Sa 12:9) 13 He gathered to himself the Ammonites and the Amalekites, and went and defeated Israel. And they took possession of the city of palms. (De 34:3; Jud 1:16; Jud 6:33; Ps 83:7)

14 And the people of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years. 15 Then the people of Israel cried out to the Lord, and the Lord raised up for them a deliverer, Ehud, the son of Gera, the Benjaminite, a left-handed man. The people of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon the king of Moab. (Jud 3:9; Jud 20:16; 1Ch 12:2) 16 And Ehud made for himself a sword with two edges, a cubit^[1] in length, and he bound it on his right thigh under his clothes. 17 And he presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. Now Eglon was a very fat man. 18 And when Ehud had finished presenting the tribute, he sent away the people who carried the tribute. 19 But he himself turned back at the idols near Gilgal and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.” And he commanded, “Silence.” And all his attendants went out from his presence. (Jos 4:20; Jud 3:26) 20 And Ehud came to him as he was sitting alone in his cool roof chamber. And Ehud said, “I have a message from God for you.” And he arose from his seat. (2Sa 20:9; Am 3:15) 21 And Ehud reached with his left hand, took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly. 22 And the hilt also went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, for he did not pull the sword out of his belly; and the dung came out. 23 Then Ehud went out into the porch^[2] and closed the doors of the roof chamber behind him and locked them. (2Sa 13:17) 24 When he had gone, the servants came, and when they saw that the doors of the roof chamber were locked, they thought, “Surely he is relieving himself in the closet of the cool chamber.” (1Sa 24:3) 25 And they waited till they were embarrassed. But when he still did not open the doors of the roof chamber, they took the key and opened them, and there lay their lord dead on the floor. 26 Ehud escaped while they delayed, and he passed beyond the idols and escaped to Seirah. (Jud 3:19) 27 When he arrived, he sounded the trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim. Then the people of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he was their leader. (Jos 24:33; Jud 6:34; 1Sa 13:3) 28 And he said to them, “Follow after me, for the Lord has given your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” So they went down after him and seized the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites and did not allow anyone to pass over. (Jos 2:7; Jud 4:7; Jud 4:14; Jud 7:9; Jud 7:15; Jud 7:24; Jud 12:5; 1Sa 17:47; 1Ki 22:12; 1Ki 22:15; 2Ch 16:8)

29 And they killed at that time about 10,000 of the Moabites, all strong, able-bodied men; not a man escaped. 30 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest for eighty years. (Jud 3:11)

Shamgar

31 After him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who killed 600 of the Philistines with an oxgoad, and he also saved Israel. (Jud 2:16; Jud 5:6; Jud 5:8; 1Sa 13:19; 1Sa 13:22)

Otoniel, Aod y Samgar

1 Estas son pues las naciones que YHVH dejó para probar con ellas a los israelitas que no habían conocido todas las guerras de Canaán 2 (sólo para que las generaciones de los hijos de Israel conocieran la guerra y la enseñaran a los que antes no la habían experimentado): 3 Los cinco jefes filisteos, todos los cananeos, los sidonios, y los heveos, los cuales habitaban en la serranía del Líbano, desde el monte Baal-hermón hasta el paso de Hamat. 4 Quedaron pues para probar a Israel, a fin de saber si obedecerían los mandamientos que YHVH había ordenado a sus padres por medio de Moisés. 5 Así, los hijos de Israel habitaron en medio del cananeo, el heteo, el amorreo, el ferezeo, el heveo y el jebuseo, 6 y tomaron sus hijas por mujeres, y entregaron sus propias hijas a los hijos de ellos, y sirvieron a sus dioses. 7 Y los hijos de Israel hicieron lo malo ante los ojos de YHVH, olvidando a YHVH su Dios y sirviendo a los Baales y a las Aseras. 8 Por tanto la ira de YHVH se encendió contra Israel y los entregó en mano de Cusán-Risataim, rey de Aram-Naharaim, y los hijos de Israel sirvieron a Cusán-Risataim ocho años. 9 Entonces los hijos de Israel clamaron a YHVH, y YHVH levantó un libertador para los hijos de Israel: a Otoniel ben Cenez, hermano menor de Caleb. Y los libertó. 10 Y el Espíritu de YHVH estuvo sobre él, y gobernó a Israel. Y salió a la guerra, y YHVH entregó en su mano a Cusán-Risataim, rey de Aram, y su mano prevaleció contra Cusán-Risataim. 11 Luego la tierra reposó cuarenta años, y murió Otoniel ben Cenez; 12 y los hijos de Israel volvieron a hacer lo malo ante los ojos de YHVH, y YHVH fortaleció a Eglón, rey de Moab, contra Israel, por cuanto habían hecho lo malo ante los ojos de YHVH. 13 Y reunió consigo a los hijos de Amón y de Amalec, y atacó a Israel, y conquistaron la ciudad de las Palmeras. 14 Y los hijos de Israel sirvieron a Eglón, rey de Moab, durante dieciocho años. 15 Pero cuando los hijos de Israel clamaron a YHVH, YHVH les levantó un libertador: Aod ben Gera, benjaminita, hombre zurdo, por medio del cual los hijos de Israel enviaron un presente a Eglón, rey de Moab. 16 Y Aod se había hecho un puñal de doble filo, de un codo de largo, y lo había ceñido debajo de sus vestidos sobre el muslo derecho. 17 Le llevó, pues, el presente a Eglón, rey de Moab, y Eglón era un hombre muy grueso. 18 Y aconteció que, cuando hubo terminado de ofrecer el presente, despidió a la gente que lo había llevado. 19 Pero él se volvió desde Pesilim en Gilgal, y dijo: Oh rey, tengo un asunto secreto para ti. Y él respondió: ¡Guarda silencio! Y todos los que estaban delante de él salieron. 20 Entonces Aod fue a él estando sentado solo en su sala de verano. Y Aod dijo: Tengo palabra de Dios para ti. Y él se levantó del trono. 21 Entonces Aod alargó su mano izquierda y tomando el puñal de su muslo derecho, se lo hundió en el vientre. 22 Y la empuñadura entró tras la hoja, y la grasa se cerró tras ella, de modo que no pudo sacarse el puñal de su vientre, y la punta le salió por la horcajadura. 23 Entonces Aod salió al corredor, y cerró tras sí las puertas de la sala y les pasó cerrojo. 24 Cuando él salía, llegaron los siervos, pero al ver las puertas de la sala cerradas, dijeron: Sin duda él está cubriendo sus pies en la cámara de verano. 25 Y esperaron impacientemente, hasta quedar desconcertados, y como él no abría las puertas de la sala, tomaron la llave y abrieron, y ¡he aquí su señor caído en tierra, muerto! 26 Pero Aod se escapó mientras ellos se demoraban, y pasando más allá de Pesilim, se puso a salvo en Seirat. 27 Y aconteció que a su llegada, resonó el shofar en la serranía de Efraín, y los hijos de Israel bajaron con él de la serranía, yendo él al frente de ellos. 28 Y les dijo: ¡Seguidme, que YHVH ha entregado a vuestros enemigos, los moabitas, en vuestra mano! Y bajaron en pos de él, y tomaron los vados del Jordán hacia Moab, y no dejaron pasar a ninguno. 29 Y en aquel tiempo mataron como diez mil hombres de los moabitas, todos robustos y todos hombres esforzados. No escapó ninguno. 30 Así fue humillado Moab en aquel día bajo la mano de Israel. Y la tierra reposó ochenta años. 31 Después de éste fue Samgar ben Anat, el cual hirió a seiscientos hombres de los filisteos con una quijada de buey; y él también libró a Israel.
