The Fall of Ai

1 And the Lord said to Joshua, “Do not fear and do not be dismayed. Take all the fighting men with you, and arise, go up to Ai. See, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, and his people, his city, and his land. (De 1:21; De 7:18; De 31:8; Jos 1:9; Jos 2:24; Jos 6:2; Jos 10:25)

2 And you shall do to Ai and its king as you did to Jericho and its king. Only its spoil and its livestock you shall take as plunder for yourselves. Lay an ambush against the city, behind it.” (De 20:14; Jos 6:21; Jos 8:27) 3 So Joshua and all the fighting men arose to go up to Ai. And Joshua chose 30,000 mighty men of valor and sent them out by night. 4 And he commanded them, “Behold, you shall lie in ambush against the city, behind it. Do not go very far from the city, but all of you remain ready. (Jud 20:29) 5 And I and all the people who are with me will approach the city. And when they come out against us just as before, we shall flee before them. (Jos 7:5) 6 And they will come out after us, until we have drawn them away from the city. For they will say, ‘They are fleeing from us, just as before.’ So we will flee before them. (Jos 8:16) 7 Then you shall rise up from the ambush and seize the city, for the Lord your God will give it into your hand. 8 And as soon as you have taken the city, you shall set the city on fire. You shall do according to the word of the Lord. See, I have commanded you.” (2Sa 13:28) 9 So Joshua sent them out. And they went to the place of ambush and lay between Bethel and Ai, to the west of Ai, but Joshua spent that night among the people. 10 Joshua arose early in the morning and mustered the people and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai. 11 And all the fighting men who were with him went up and drew near before the city and encamped on the north side of Ai, with a ravine between them and Ai. (Jos 8:5) 12 He took about 5,000 men and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, to the west of the city. 13 So they stationed the forces, the main encampment that was north of the city and its rear guard west of the city. But Joshua spent that night in the valley. 14 And as soon as the king of Ai saw this, he and all his people, the men of the city, hurried and went out early to the appointed place^[1] toward the Arabah to meet Israel in battle. But he did not know that there was an ambush against him behind the city. (De 1:1; Jud 20:34) 15 And Joshua and all Israel pretended to be beaten before them and fled in the direction of the wilderness. (Jud 20:36) 16 So all the people who were in the city were called together to pursue them, and as they pursued Joshua they were drawn away from the city. (Jos 8:6) 17 Not a man was left in Ai or Bethel who did not go out after Israel. They left the city open and pursued Israel. 18 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Stretch out the javelin that is in your hand toward Ai, for I will give it into your hand.” And Joshua stretched out the javelin that was in his hand toward the city. (Jos 8:26) 19 And the men in the ambush rose quickly out of their place, and as soon as he had stretched out his hand, they ran and entered the city and captured it. And they hurried to set the city on fire. 20 So when the men of Ai looked back, behold, the smoke of the city went up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that, for the people who fled to the wilderness turned back against the pursuers. 21 And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had captured the city, and that the smoke of the city went up, then they turned back and struck down the men of Ai. 22 And the others came out from the city against them, so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side. And Israel struck them down, until there was left none that survived or escaped. (De 7:2) 23 But the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him near to Joshua. 24 When Israel had finished killing all the inhabitants of Ai in the open wilderness where they pursued them, and all of them to the very last had fallen by the edge of the sword, all Israel returned to Ai and struck it down with the edge of the sword. 25 And all who fell that day, both men and women, were 12,000, all the people of Ai. 26 But Joshua did not draw back his hand with which he stretched out the javelin until he had devoted all the inhabitants of Ai to destruction.^[2] (Jos 8:18) 27 Only the livestock and the spoil of that city Israel took as their plunder, according to the word of the Lord that he commanded Joshua. (Jos 8:2) 28 So Joshua burned Ai and made it forever a heap of ruins, as it is to this day. (De 13:16) 29 And he hanged the king of Ai on a tree until evening. And at sunset Joshua commanded, and they took his body down from the tree and threw it at the entrance of the gate of the city and raised over it a great heap of stones, which stands there to this day. (De 21:23; Jos 7:26; Jos 10:26)

Joshua Renews the Covenant

30 At that time Joshua built an altar to the Lord, the God of Israel, on Mount Ebal, (Ex 20:24; De 27:4) 31 just as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded the people of Israel, as it is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, “an altar of uncut stones, upon which no man has wielded an iron tool.” And they offered on it burnt offerings to the Lord and sacrificed peace offerings. 32 And there, in the presence of the people of Israel, he wrote on the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he had written. (De 27:2) 33 And all Israel, sojourner as well as native born, with their elders and officers and their judges, stood on opposite sides of the ark before the Levitical priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, half of them in front of Mount Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, just as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded at the first, to bless the people of Israel. 35 There was not a word of all that Moses commanded that Joshua did not read before all the assembly of Israel, and the women, and the little ones, and the sojourners who lived^[3] among them. (De 31:12; Jos 8:33)

La conquista de Hai

1 Dijo YHVH a Josué: ¡No temas ni desmayes! Toma contigo a toda la gente de guerra, y ve y sube a Hai. He aquí, Yo he entregado en tu mano al rey de Hai, y su pueblo, y su ciudad, y su tierra. 2 Y tú harás con Hai y su rey como hiciste con Jericó y su rey, sólo que su botín y su ganado podréis tomar para vosotros. Prepara una emboscada contra la ciudad, por detrás. 3 Y Josué se levantó con toda la gente de guerra para subir contra Hai, y escogió Josué treinta mil hombres fuertes, a los cuales envió de noche. 4 Y les mandó, diciendo: Atended: poned emboscada contra la ciudad, detrás de la ciudad. No os alejéis mucho de la ciudad, y estad todos preparados. 5 Después yo y todo el pueblo que está conmigo nos acercaremos a la ciudad, y cuando ellos salgan contra nosotros, como hicieron antes, huiremos delante de ellos. 6 Y ellos saldrán tras nosotros, y haremos que se aparten de la ciudad, porque dirán: ¡Huyen de nosotros como la vez primera! 7 Mientras huimos ante ellos, vosotros saldréis de la emboscada, y conquistaréis la ciudad, pues YHVH vuestro Dios la ha entregado en vuestra mano. 8 Y cuando la hayáis ocupado, le prenderéis fuego. Haréis conforme a la palabra de YHVH. Mirad que os lo he mandado. 9 Entonces Josué los envió, y fueron a la emboscada, y se pusieron entre Bet-’El y Hai, al occidente de Hai, en tanto que Josué pasó aquella noche entre el pueblo. 10 Josué se levantó muy de mañana, y pasó revista al pueblo, y juntamente con los ancianos de Israel, subió al frente del pueblo contra Hai. 11 Y toda la gente de guerra que lo acompañaba subió también y se fueron acercando hasta llegar frente a la ciudad, y acamparon al lado norte de Hai, valle de por medio entre él y Hai. 12 Entonces tomó unos cinco mil hombres, y los emboscó entre Bet-’El y Hai, al occidente de la ciudad. 13 El pueblo pues fue dispuesto así: todo el ejército, al norte de la ciudad, la emboscada, al occidente de la ciudad, mientras Josué avanzaba durante la noche hasta el medio del valle. 14 Cuando el rey de Hai vio esto, los hombres de la ciudad se apresuraron y madrugaron saliendo a la batalla contra Israel, él y todo su pueblo, en el lugar designado, frente al Arabá, pero no sabía que había una emboscada contra él detrás de la ciudad. 15 Entonces Josué y todo Israel simularon que estaban derrotados y huyeron camino al desierto. 16 Y todo el pueblo de Hai fue convocado para perseguirlos, y persiguieron a Josué apartándose así de la ciudad. 17 Y no quedó hombre alguno en Hai o en Bet-’El que no saliera en pos de Israel, pero al perseguir a Israel, dejaron la ciudad abierta. 18 Entonces YHVH dijo a Josué: Extiende la jabalina que llevas en tu mano hacia Hai, porque la entregaré en tu mano. Y Josué extendió hacia la ciudad la jabalina que tenía en su mano. 19 Y tan pronto él hubo extendido su mano, los emboscados salieron rápidamente de su escondite y corriendo, entraron en la ciudad y la capturaron, y se apresuraron a prender fuego a la ciudad. 20 Cuando los hombres de Hai miraron detrás de sí, he aquí la humareda de la ciudad subía a los cielos, y no tuvieron posibilidad de huir ni por un lado ni por otro, porque el pueblo que huía al desierto se había vuelto contra sus perseguidores. 21 Pues Josué y todo Israel, viendo que los de la emboscada ya habían conquistado la ciudad, y que la humareda de la ciudad subía, se volvieron y atacaron a los hombres de Hai, 22 en tanto que los otros salieron de la ciudad a su encuentro, y así quedaron en medio de Israel, unos por una parte y otros por otra; y así los atacaron hasta que no quedó ningún sobreviviente ni fugitivo. 23 Pero el rey de Hai fue capturado vivo y lo llevaron a Josué. 24 Y cuando Israel puso fin a la matanza de todos los habitantes de Hai en el campo (aun en el desierto hasta donde los persiguieron), y todos cayeron a filo de espada hasta que fueron consumidos, sucedió que todo Israel retornó a Hai, y la arrasaron a filo de espada. 25 Y los que cayeron en aquel día, hombres y mujeres, fueron doce mil, todos los de Hai. 26 Porque Josué no retrajo su mano, con la que sostenía la jabalina, hasta que hubo exterminado a todos los habitantes de Hai. 27 Israel tomó como botín para sí sólo los animales y el despojo de la ciudad, conforme a la palabra que YHVH había ordenado a Josué. 28 Luego Josué incendió a Hai y la redujo para siempre a un montón de ruinas, desolación que se mantiene hasta hoy. 29 Y colgó al rey de Hai de un árbol hasta el atardecer, pero a la caída del sol, Josué dio orden para que hicieran bajar su cadáver del árbol. Y lo echaron a la entrada de la ciudad, e hicieron levantar sobre él un gran montón de piedras, que permanece hasta este día. 30 Entonces Josué edificó un altar a YHVH Dios de Israel en el monte Ebal, 31 tal como Moisés, siervo de YHVH, había ordenado a los hijos de Israel, según está escrito en el libro de la Ley de Moisés: un altar de piedra bruta sobre la que ningún hombre había alzado herramienta alguna, y ofrecieron sobre él holocaustos a YHVH, y sacrificaron ofrendas de paz. 32 Y él escribió allí sobre las piedras una copia de la Ley de Moisés, la cual había escrito en presencia de los hijos de Israel. 33 Y todo Israel, y sus ancianos, y oficiales, y sus jueces, estaban de pie a ambos lados del Arca, ante los sacerdotes levitas que cargaban el Arca del Pacto de YHVH. Tanto extranjeros como naturales, la mitad estaba frente al monte Gerizim, y la otra mitad frente al monte Ebal, tal como Moisés siervo de YHVH había ordenado la primera vez, para que bendijeran al pueblo de Israel. 34 Después de esto, leyó todas las palabras de la Ley: la bendición y la maldición, conforme a todo lo que está escrito en el Libro de la Ley. 35 No hubo palabra de todo lo que ordenó Moisés, que Josué no leyera frente a toda la congregación de Israel, tanto a mujeres como a pequeños, y al extranjero que andaba en medio de ellos.
