The Lord Promises Peace

1 The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah a second time, while he was still shut up in the court of the guard: (Jer 32:2) 2 “Thus says the Lord who made the earth,^[1] the Lord who formed it to establish it—the Lord is his name: (Ex 6:3; Ps 83:18; Isa 37:26; Jer 16:21; Am 4:13)

3 Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known. (Ps 91:15; Isa 48:6; Jer 29:12) 4 For thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the houses of this city and the houses of the kings of Judah that were torn down to make a defense against the siege mounds and against the sword: (Jer 32:24) 5 They are coming in to fight against the Chaldeans and to fill them^[2] with the dead bodies of men whom I shall strike down in my anger and my wrath, for I have hidden my face from this city because of all their evil. (De 31:17; Jer 32:5; Eze 22:20) 6 Behold, I will bring to it health and healing, and I will heal them and reveal to them abundance of prosperity and security. (Jer 30:17) 7 I will restore the fortunes of Judah and the fortunes of Israel, and rebuild them as they were at first. (Isa 1:26; Jer 24:6; Jer 30:3) 8 I will cleanse them from all the guilt of their sin against me, and I will forgive all the guilt of their sin and rebellion against me. 9 And this city^[3] shall be to me a name of joy, a praise and a glory before all the nations of the earth who shall hear of all the good that I do for them. They shall fear and tremble because of all the good and all the prosperity I provide for it. (Ps 130:4; Isa 60:5; Jer 13:11) 10 “Thus says the Lord: In this place of which you say, ‘It is a waste without man or beast,’ in the cities of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem that are desolate, without man or inhabitant or beast, there shall be heard again (Jer 32:43) 11 the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the voices of those who sing, as they bring thank offerings to the house of the Lord: “‘Give thanks to the Lord of hosts, for the Lord is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!’ For I will restore the fortunes of the land as at first, says the Lord. 12 “Thus says the Lord of hosts: In this place that is waste, without man or beast, and in all of its cities, there shall again be habitations of shepherds resting their flocks. (So 1:7; Isa 65:10; Jer 31:24; Jer 50:19; Eze 34:14; Eze 36:11)

13 In the cities of the hill country, in the cities of the Shephelah, and in the cities of the Negeb, in the land of Benjamin, the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, flocks shall again pass under the hands of the one who counts them, says the Lord. (Le 27:32; Jer 17:26; Joh 10:3)

The Lord’s Eternal Covenant with David

14 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. (Jer 23:5; Jer 29:10) 15 In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David, and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. (Isa 4:2; Isa 11:1; Jer 23:5) 16 In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will dwell securely. And this is the name by which it will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’ (Jer 23:6; Jer 32:37) 17 “For thus says the Lord: David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel, (2Sa 7:16; 1Ki 2:4; Ps 89:3) 18 and the Levitical priests shall never lack a man in my presence to offer burnt offerings, to burn grain offerings, and to make sacrifices forever.” (Isa 66:21) 19 The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 20 “Thus says the Lord: If you can break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night, so that day and night will not come at their appointed time, (Ge 8:22; Ps 72:5; Isa 54:9; Jer 31:36; Jer 33:25)

21 then also my covenant with David my servant may be broken, so that he shall not have a son to reign on his throne, and my covenant with the Levitical priests my ministers. (Ps 89:34) 22 As the host of heaven cannot be numbered and the sands of the sea cannot be measured, so I will multiply the offspring of David my servant, and the Levitical priests who minister to me.” (Ge 22:17) 23 The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 24 “Have you not observed that these people are saying, ‘The Lord has rejected the two clans that he chose’? Thus they have despised my people so that they are no longer a nation in their sight. 25 Thus says the Lord: If I have not established my covenant with day and night and the fixed order of heaven and earth, (Ps 74:16; Ps 104:19) 26 then I will reject the offspring of Jacob and David my servant and will not choose one of his offspring to rule over the offspring of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. For I will restore their fortunes and will have mercy on them.” (Jer 30:3; Jer 33:7; Jer 33:11)

1 Vino palabra de YHVH a Jeremías la segunda vez, estando él aún preso en el atrio de la guardia, diciendo: 2 Así dice YHVH, que hizo la tierra, YHVH, que la formó para afirmarla. YHVH es su nombre: 3 Clama a mí, y Yo te responderé, y te enseñaré cosas grandes y ocultas que tú no conoces. 4 Porque así dice YHVH Dios de Israel a las casas de esta ciudad, y a las casas de los reyes de Judá, las cuales fueron derribadas para construir defensas contra las torres de asalto y contra la espada: 5 Ahora vienen a pelear contra ella los caldeos, llenándolas de cadáveres humanos, porque Yo la herí con mi furor y mi ira, y por cuya maldad oculté mi rostro de esta ciudad: 6 Yo mismo traeré sanidad y medicina; y los sanaré, y les revelaré la abundancia de paz y de fidelidad. 7 Haré volver los cautivos de Judá y los cautivos de Israel, y los restableceré como al principio. 8 Y los limpiaré de toda su iniquidad, con la cual pecaron contra mí, y perdonaré todos sus pecados con los cuales pecaron contra mí, y con los cuales transgredieron mis mandamientos. 9 Y esta ciudad me será un nombre de regocijo, de alabanza y de gloria delante de todas las naciones de la tierra, las cuales oirán de todo el bien que Yo le haré, y temerán y temblarán a causa de todo el bien y de toda la prosperidad que le voy a conceder. 10 Así dice YHVH: Todavía ha de oírse en este lugar, que decís que está desolado, sin hombres ni bestias, en las ciudades de Judá y en las calles de Jerusalem, que están asoladas, sin hombres, sin habitantes y sin bestias, 11 sí, ha de oírse aún voz de regocijo y de alegría, voz de desposado y voz de desposada, voz de los que digan: ¡Alabad a YHVH Sebaot, porque YHVH es bueno, porque para siempre es su misericordia! Y voz de los que traigan ofrendas de acción de gracias a la Casa de YHVH. Porque volveré a traer los cautivos de la tierra como al principio, dice YHVH. 12 Así dice YHVH Sebaot: Todavía ha de haber en este lugar, que está desierto, sin hombres ni bestias, y en todas sus ciudades, aún ha de haber majadas de pastores que hagan recostar sus rebaños. 13 En las ciudades de la Serranía, en las ciudades de la Sefelá, en las ciudades del Néguev, en la tierra de Benjamín, en los alrededores de Jerusalem y en las ciudades de Judá, otra vez pasarán rebaños bajo la mano de quien los cuente, dice YHVH. 14 He aquí vienen días, dice YHVH, en que Yo confirmaré la buena palabra que he hablado a la casa de Israel y a la casa de Judá. 15 En aquellos días y en ese tiempo haré brotar a David un Renuevo de justicia, el cual ejecutará juicio y justicia en la tierra. 16 En aquellos días Judá será salvo, y Jerusalem habitará segura, y será llamada: YHVH Sidkenu. 17 Porque así dice YHVH: No faltará a David varón que se siente sobre el trono de la casa de Israel. 18 Ni a los sacerdotes ni a los levitas faltará varón que ofrezca delante de mí el holocausto y encienda la ofrenda, y que haga sacrificio todos los días. 19 Otra vez la palabra de YHVH llegó a Jeremías, diciendo: 20 Así dice YHVH: Si pudierais anular mi pacto con el día y mi pacto con la noche, de manera que no haya ni día ni noche a su tiempo, 21 entonces también podrá anularse mi pacto con mi siervo David, para que deje de tener hijo que reine sobre su trono, y mi pacto con los levitas y sacerdotes, mis ministros. 22 Como no puede ser contado el ejército de los cielos, ni se puede medir la arena del mar, así multiplicaré la descendencia de mi siervo David y los levitas que me sirven. 23 Otra vez llegó la palabra de YHVH a Jeremías, diciendo: 24 ¿No oyes lo que dice este pueblo: Las dos familias que YHVH había escogido las ha desechado? Así desprecian a mi pueblo, y no lo tienen por nación. 25 Así dice YHVH: Como es cierto que he creado el día y la noche, y he establecido los cielos y la tierra, 26 también es cierto que no desecharé el linaje de Jacob y de David mi siervo, dejando de tomar de su descendencia quien sea señor sobre el linaje de Abraham, de Isaac y de Jacob. Porque cambio su suerte y les tengo compasión.
