Israel Forsakes the Lord

1 The word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem, Thus says the Lord, “I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a bride, how you followed me in the wilderness, in a land not sown. (De 2:7; De 8:2; Jer 3:4; Eze 16:8; Eze 16:43; Eze 16:60; Re 2:4)

3 Israel was holy to the Lord, the firstfruits of his harvest. All who ate of it incurred guilt; disaster came upon them, declares the Lord.” (Ge 12:3; Ex 4:22; Ex 19:5; Ex 28:36; Jer 12:14; Eze 25:12; Jas 1:18)

4 Hear the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob, and all the clans of the house of Israel. 5 Thus says the Lord: “What wrong did your fathers find in me that they went far from me, and went after worthlessness, and became worthless? 6 They did not say, ‘Where is the Lord who brought us up from the land of Egypt, who led us in the wilderness, in a land of deserts and pits, in a land of drought and deep darkness, in a land that none passes through, where no man dwells?’ (De 8:15; De 32:10; Isa 63:11; Ho 13:4)

7 And I brought you into a plentiful land to enjoy its fruits and its good things. But when you came in, you defiled my land and made my heritage an abomination. (Le 18:24; De 8:7; Ps 106:38) 8 The priests did not say, ‘Where is the Lord?’ Those who handle the law did not know me; the shepherds^[1] transgressed against me; the prophets prophesied by Baal and went after things that do not profit. 10 For cross to the coasts of Cyprus and see, or send to Kedar and examine with care; see if there has been such a thing. (Ge 10:4; Isa 21:16) 11 Has a nation changed its gods, even though they are no gods? But my people have changed their glory for that which does not profit. 12 Be appalled, O heavens, at this; be shocked, be utterly desolate, declares the Lord, (Isa 1:2) 13 for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water. (Ps 36:9; Jer 17:13; Joh 4:10) 14 “Is Israel a slave? Is he a homeborn servant? Why then has he become a prey? (Ex 4:22) 15 The lions have roared against him; they have roared loudly. 17 Have you not brought this upon yourself by forsaking the Lord your God, when he led you in the way? 22 Though you wash yourself with lye and use much soap, the stain of your guilt is still before me, declares the Lord God. (Jer 17:1) 23 How can you say, ‘I am not unclean, I have not gone after the Baals’? 24 a wild donkey used to the wilderness, in her heat sniffing the wind! Who can restrain her lust? None who seek her need weary themselves; in her month they will find her. 26 “As a thief is shamed when caught, so the house of Israel shall be shamed: they, their kings, their officials, their priests, and their prophets, (Jer 8:1; Jer 13:13; Jer 32:32) 27 who say to a tree, ‘You are my father,’ and to a stone, ‘You gave me birth.’ For they have turned their back to me, and not their face. But in the time of their trouble they say, ‘Arise and save us!’ (Jud 10:9; Isa 26:16) 28 But where are your gods that you made for yourself? 31 And you, O generation, behold the word of the Lord. Have I been a wilderness to Israel, or a land of thick darkness? Why then do my people say, ‘We are free, we will come no more to you’? 32 Can a virgin forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? Yet my people have forgotten me days without number. 36 How much you go about, changing your way! You shall be put to shame by Egypt as you were put to shame by Assyria. 1 Y vino a mí palabra de YHVH, diciendo: 2 Anda y clama a oídos de Jerusalem, y dile: Así dice YHVH: A favor tuyo me acuerdo de la ternura de tu juventud, Del amor de tus desposorios, De tu andar en pos de mí en el desierto, En tierra no sembrada. 3 Israel era santidad a YHVH, Primicias de su cosecha, Quien osaba comer de ella lo pagaba, La calamidad venía sobre ellos: Oráculo de YHVH. 4 ¡Oíd la palabra de YHVH, oh casa de Jacob Y todas las familias de la casa de Israel! 5 Así dice YHVH: ¿Qué injusticia hallaron en mí vuestros padres para alejarse de mí? Siguieron tras la vanidad y se quedaron vacíos, 6 En vez de preguntar: ¿Dónde está YHVH, Que nos hizo subir de la tierra de Egipto y nos condujo por el desierto, Por tierra desierta y despoblada, Tierra sedienta y sombría, Tierra por la cual nadie había pasado, Y en la cual nadie había habitado? 7 Y os introduje a una tierra fértil, Para que comierais sus frutos y delicias, Pero entrasteis y contaminasteis mi tierra Y convertisteis mi heredad en abominación. 8 Los sacerdotes no preguntaban: ¿Dónde está YHVH? Los doctores de la Ley no me conocían, Los pastores se rebelaban contra mí, Y los profetas profetizaban en nombre de Baal, Siguiendo a dioses que de nada sirven. 9 Por eso vuelvo a contender contra vosotros, Y contra los hijos de vuestros hijos, dice YHVH. 10 Pasad a las costas de Quitim y mirad; Enviad a Cedar y observad atentamente, Y ved si ha sucedido algo semejante a esto: 11 ¿Acaso alguna nación ha cambiado sus dioses? (aunque ellos no son dioses). ¡Pues mi pueblo cambió mi gloria por lo que no sirve! 12 ¡Espantaos, cielos, por ello; horrorizaos y quedad perplejos! dice YHVH. 13 Porque dos males ha hecho mi pueblo: Me abandonaron a mí, fuente de agua viva, Y cavaron para sí cisternas, Cisternas rotas que no retienen el agua. 14 ¿Es Israel siervo?¿Acaso es esclavo? ¿Por qué, entonces, ha llegado a ser presa? 15 Los leoncillos rugieron contra él, dieron sus bramidos, Y convirtieron su tierra en una desolación; Sus ciudades están quemadas y sin habitantes. 16 Hasta los hijos de Menfis y de Tafnes te han rapado la coronilla. 17 ¿No te ha sucedido todo esto por haber abandonado a YHVH tu Dios cuando Él te guiaba por el camino? 18 Y ahora, ¿qué buscas rumbo a Egipto? ¿Beber agua del Nilo? ¿Qué buscas rumbo Asiria? ¿Beber agua del Éufrates? 19 ¡Repréndate tu maldad! ¡Condénente tus apostasías! Considera y reconoce cuán malo y amargo Es haber abandonado a YHVH tu Dios, Y no tener temor de mí, Dice Adonay YHVH Sebaot. 20 Desde antiguo has quebrado el yugo y roto tus ataduras, Diciendo: ¡No quiero servir! Y sobre todo collado alto, y debajo todo árbol frondoso te postras y te prostituyes. 21 Yo te planté como vid escogida, Toda ella de cepas genuinas; ¿Cómo, pues, te me has vuelto sarmiento degenerado de vid bastarda? 22 Aunque te laves con lejía y uses mucho jabón para ti, La mancha de tu pecado está aún delante de mí, Dice Adonay YHVH. 23 ¿Cómo te atreves a decir: No me he contaminado ni he ido tras los baales? Considera tu andar en el valle, Y reconoce lo que has hecho, ¡Oh dromedaria desbocada! Que corre de un lado a otro; 24 ¡Oh asna montesa habituada al desierto! Que en su ardor olfatea el viento; ¿Quién podrá reprimir su celo? Los que la buscan no necesitan cansarse: La encontrarán siempre encelada. 25 Guarda tu pie de andar descalzo, Y tu garganta de la sed; Pero dijiste: ¡No hay remedio, no; A extranjeros he amado, y tras ellos he de ir! 26 Como se avergüenza el ladrón cuando es sorprendido, Así será avergonzada la casa de Israel; Sus reyes y sus príncipes, Sus sacerdotes y sus profetas, 27 Que dicen al leño: ¡Tú eres mi padre! Y a la piedra: ¡Tú me has dado a luz! Pues me han dado la espalda, y no la cara, Pero en el tiempo de su desgracia me dicen: ¡Levántate y sálvanos! 28 Pero, ¿dónde están los dioses que te hiciste? ¡Levántense y sálvente ellos en el tiempo de tu calamidad! Pues como el número de tus ciudades, oh Judá, Así ha sido el número de tus dioses. 29 ¿Por qué contendéis conmigo, Si todos os habéis rebelado contra mí?, dice YHVH. 30 En vano he azotado a vuestros hijos: Ellos no han recibido corrección. Vuestra espada ha devorado a vuestros profetas, Como un león destructor. 31 ¡Oh generación, atended la palabra de YHVH! ¿He sido Yo un desierto para Israel? ¿O acaso una tierra de densas tinieblas? ¿Por qué dice mi pueblo: Somos libres, nunca más volveremos a ti? 32 ¿Olvida acaso la doncella su ornamento, O la novia su ajuar? Pues mi pueblo me ha olvidado un sinnúmero de días. 33 ¡Qué bien sabes tu camino para buscar amores! Por eso, aun a las malvadas has enseñado tus caminos. 34 Hasta en los bordes de tu vestido hay sangre de almas de pobres inocentes, A quienes no sorprendiste irrumpiendo. Y a pesar de todo, dices: 35 Inocente soy, su ira se ha apartado de mí. He aquí Yo entro en juicio contigo, Porque dijiste: No he pecado. 36 ¡Cuán frívola eres para cambiar de rumbo! También serás avergonzada por Egipto, Como fuiste avergonzada por Asiria. 37 También de allí saldrás con las manos en la cabeza, Porque YHVH ha desechado la base de tu confianza, Y con ellos no prosperarás.
