Israel Increases Greatly in Egypt

1 These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob, each with his household: (Ge 35:23; Ge 46:8) 2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, 3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, 4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. 5 All the descendants of Jacob were seventy persons; Joseph was already in Egypt. (Ge 46:27; De 10:22) 6 Then Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation. (Ge 50:26) 7 But the people of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, so that the land was filled with them. (Ge 46:3; De 26:5; Ac 7:17)

Pharaoh Oppresses Israel

8 Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. (Ac 7:18) 9 And he said to his people, “Behold, the people of Israel are too many and too mighty for us. (Ps 105:24) 10 Come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and, if war breaks out, they join our enemies and fight against us and escape from the land.” (Ps 83:3; Ps 105:25; Ac 7:19) 11 Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with heavy burdens. 12 But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And the Egyptians were in dread of the people of Israel. 13 So they ruthlessly made the people of Israel work as slaves (Ex 5:7) 14 and made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and brick, and in all kinds of work in the field. In all their work they ruthlessly made them work as slaves. (Ex 2:23; Ex 6:9; Nu 20:15; Ac 7:19; Ac 7:34)

15 Then the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah, 16 “When you serve as midwife to the Hebrew women and see them on the birthstool, if it is a son, you shall kill him, but if it is a daughter, she shall live.” 17 But the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but let the male children live. 18 So the king of Egypt called the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this, and let the male children live?” 19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.” 20 So God dealt well with the midwives. 22 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, “Every son that is born to the Hebrews^[1] you shall cast into the Nile, but you shall let every daughter live.” (Ge 41:1; Ac 7:19)

1 Estos son los nombres de los hijos de Israel que entraron en Egipto; con Jacob entraron, cada uno con su familia: 2 Rubén, Simón, Leví y Judá, 3 Isacar, Zabulón y Benjamín, 4 Dan y Neftalí, Gad y Aser. 5 Todas las personas descendientes de Jacob, fueron setenta almas, pues José ya estaba en Egipto. 6 Y murió José, y todos sus hermanos, y toda aquella generación. 7 Pero los hijos de Israel fueron fecundos y se multiplicaron, y fueron aumentados y fortalecidos en extremo, y se llenó de ellos la tierra. 8 Entonces se levantó en Egipto otro rey, que no conocía a José, 9 y dijo a su pueblo: Ciertamente el pueblo de los hijos de Israel es más numeroso y fuerte que nosotros. 10 Vamos, procedamos con astucia contra él, no sea que se multiplique, y suceda que cuando sobrevenga una guerra, se una también con los que nos aborrecen, y luche contra nosotros y se vaya de esta tierra. 11 Entonces les impusieron capataces de trabajos forzados para que los abrumaran con sus cargas. Así se edificaron para Faraón las ciudades almacenes de Pitón y Rameses. 12 Pero cuanto más los oprimían, más se multiplicaban y esparcían, hasta que llegaron a sentir aversión por los hijos de Israel. 13 Los egipcios esclavizaron a los hijos de Israel con tiranía, 14 y amargaron su vida con duro trabajo de arcilla y adobes, con toda clase de labores del campo y en toda suerte de trabajos que tuvieron que servir por causa de la opresión. 15 Entonces el rey de Egipto habló a las parteras hebreas, una de las cuales se llamaba Sifra, y el nombre de la segunda era Puá, 16 y dijo: Cuando asistáis al parto a las hebreas, observad los asientos. Si es hijo, hacedlo morir, y si es hija, que viva. 17 Pero las parteras tuvieron temor de ’Elohim, y no hicieron conforme a lo que el rey de Egipto les había ordenado, sino que dejaron vivir a los niños. 18 Por lo cual el rey egipcio hizo llamar a las parteras, y les dijo: ¿Por qué habéis hecho esto, y dejáis vivir a los niños? 19 Y las parteras respondieron a Faraón: Porque las mujeres hebreas no son como las mujeres egipcias, pues son vivaces y dan a luz antes que la partera llegue a ellas. 20 Y ’Elohim favoreció a las parteras, y el pueblo se multiplicó y se fortaleció en gran manera. 21 Y por haber temido las parteras a ’Elohim, Él les concedió muchos descendientes. 22 Sin embargo, Faraón ordenó a todo su pueblo, diciendo: Echad al Nilo a todo hijo que nazca, pero a toda hija dejadla con vida.
