David’s Census

1 Again the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he incited David against them, saying, “Go, number Israel and Judah.” (1Ch 21:1; 1Ch 27:23) 2 So the king said to Joab, the commander of the army,^[1] who was with him, “Go through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, and number the people, that I may know the number of the people.” (2Sa 3:10; 2Sa 24:15) 3 But Joab said to the king, “May the Lord your God add to the people a hundred times as many as they are, while the eyes of my lord the king still see it, but why does my lord the king delight in this thing?” (De 1:11) 4 But the king’s word prevailed against Joab and the commanders of the army. So Joab and the commanders of the army went out from the presence of the king to number the people of Israel. 5 They crossed the Jordan and began from Aroer,^[2] and from the city that is in the middle of the valley, toward Gad and on to Jazer. 6 Then they came to Gilead, and to Kadesh in the land of the Hittites;^[3] and they came to Dan, and from Dan^[4] they went around to Sidon, (Jos 19:28; Jud 18:28) 7 and came to the fortress of Tyre and to all the cities of the Hivites and Canaanites; and they went out to the Negeb of Judah at Beersheba. (Jos 11:3; Jud 3:3) 8 So when they had gone through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days. 9 And Joab gave the sum of the numbering of the people to the king: in Israel there were 800,000 valiant men who drew the sword, and the men of Judah were 500,000. (Jud 8:10)

The Lord’s Judgment of David’s Sin

10 But David’s heart struck him after he had numbered the people. And David said to the Lord, “I have sinned greatly in what I have done. But now, O Lord, please take away the iniquity of your servant, for I have done very foolishly.” (1Sa 13:13; 1Sa 24:5; 2Sa 12:13) 11 And when David arose in the morning, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying, (1Sa 9:9; 1Sa 22:5) 12 “Go and say to David, ‘Thus says the Lord, Three things I offer^[5] you. Choose one of them, that I may do it to you.’” 13 So Gad came to David and told him, and said to him, “Shall three^[6] years of famine come to you in your land? Or will you flee three months before your foes while they pursue you? Or shall there be three days’ pestilence in your land? Now consider, and decide what answer I shall return to him who sent me.” (1Ch 21:12) 14 Then David said to Gad, “I am in great distress. Let us fall into the hand of the Lord, for his mercy is great; but let me not fall into the hand of man.” (Ps 119:156) 15 So the Lord sent a pestilence on Israel from the morning until the appointed time. And there died of the people from Dan to Beersheba 70,000 men. (2Sa 24:2; 1Ch 27:24) 16 And when the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord relented from the calamity and said to the angel who was working destruction among the people, “It is enough; now stay your hand.” And the angel of the Lord was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. 17 Then David spoke to the Lord when he saw the angel who was striking the people, and said, “Behold, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand be against me and against my father’s house.”

David Builds an Altar

18 And Gad came that day to David and said to him, “Go up, raise an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.” (2Ch 3:1) 19 So David went up at Gad’s word, as the Lord commanded. 20 And when Araunah looked down, he saw the king and his servants coming on toward him. And Araunah went out and paid homage to the king with his face to the ground. 21 And Araunah said, “Why has my lord the king come to his servant?” David said, “To buy the threshing floor from you, in order to build an altar to the Lord, that the plague may be averted from the people.” (Nu 16:48; Nu 16:50) 22 Then Araunah said to David, “Let my lord the king take and offer up what seems good to him. Here are the oxen for the burnt offering and the threshing sledges and the yokes of the oxen for the wood. (1Ki 19:21) 23 All this, O king, Araunah gives to the king.” And Araunah said to the king, “May the Lord your God accept you.” (De 33:11; Ps 20:3) 24 But the king said to Araunah, “No, but I will buy it from you for a price. I will not offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God that cost me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels^[7] of silver. 25 And David built there an altar to the Lord and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the Lord responded to the plea for the land, and the plague was averted from Israel. (2Sa 21:14)

Censo del pueblo

1 Volvió a encenderse la ira de YHVH contra Israel; e incitó a David contra ellos para que dijera: Ve, haz un censo de Israel y de Judá. 2 Y el rey dijo a Joab, general del ejército, que estaba con él: Recorre todas las tribus de Israel, desde Dan hasta Beerseba, y haz un censo del pueblo, para que yo sepa el número de la gente. 3 Pero Joab dijo al rey: ¡YHVH tu Dios añada al pueblo cien veces más, y que mi señor el rey lo vea! Pero, ¿por qué desea esto mi señor el rey? 4 Pero la palabra del rey prevaleció contra Joab y contra los jefes del ejército. Así que Joab y los jefes del ejército salieron de la presencia del rey para hacer el censo del pueblo de Israel. 5 Cruzaron el Jordán y acamparon en Aroer, a la derecha de la ciudad que está en medio del valle de Gad, junto a Jazer. 6 Después fueron a Galaad y a la tierra de Tahtim-hodsi, y de allí a Dan-jaán y a los alrededores de Sidón. 7 Fueron luego a la fortaleza de Tiro, y a todas las ciudades de los heveos y de los cananeos, y por último se dirigieron al sur de Judá, hasta Beerseba. 8 Y habiendo recorrido el país, volvieron a Jerusalem al cabo de nueve meses y veinte días. 9 Y Joab entregó el censo del pueblo al rey. Ahora, oh YHVH, te ruego que perdones la iniquidad de tu siervo, porque he obrado neciamente. 11 Cuando David se levantó por la mañana, la palabra de YHVH fue al profeta Gad, vidente de David, diciendo: 12 Ve y di a David: Así dice YHVH: Tres cosas te propongo; escoge una de ellas, para que Yo te la haga. 13 Y Gad fue a David, y se lo hizo saber, diciéndole: ¿Te sobrevendrán siete años de hambre en tu tierra? ¿Huirás tres meses delante de tu adversario mientras te persigue? ¿Habrá tres días de peste en tu tierra? Decide ahora, y mira qué he de responder al que me envía. 14 Y David respondió a Gad: Estoy en gran angustia; pero es preferible caer en manos de YHVH, porque muchas son sus misericordias, que caer en manos de los hombres. 15 Y YHVH envió la peste sobre Israel desde la mañana hasta el tiempo señalado; y desde Dan hasta Beerseba murieron del pueblo setenta mil hombres. 16 Pero cuando el ángel extendió su mano hacia Jerusalem para destruirla, YHVH se compadeció por esa desgracia, y dijo al ángel que estaba destruyendo al pueblo: ¡Basta ya! ¡Detén tu mano! Y el ángel de YHVH estaba junto a la era de Arauna, el jebuseo. 17 Y David, cuando vio al ángel herir al pueblo, habló a YHVH, y dijo: Yo mismo soy el que ha pecado, y yo soy el que ha obrado perversamente; pero estas ovejas, ¿qué han hecho? ¡Sea ahora tu mano contra mí y contra la casa de mi padre! 18 Y Gad fue a David aquel día y le dijo: Sube y levanta un altar a YHVH en la era de Arauna el jebuseo. 19 Entonces David subió conforme a la palabra de Gad, tal como YHVH había ordenado. 20 Y tendiendo la vista, Arauna vio al rey y a sus siervos que avanzaban hacia él; y saliendo Arauna, se postró rostro en tierra ante el rey. 21 Y preguntó Arauna: ¿Para qué viene mi señor el rey a su siervo? Y David respondió: A comprarte la era para edificar un altar a YHVH a fin de detener la mortandad del pueblo. 22 Pero Arauna dijo a David: Tómela y ofrezca mi señor el rey lo que le parezca bien. ¡He aquí los bueyes para el holocausto, y los trillos y los yugos de los bueyes para leña! 23 ¡Todo, oh rey, lo da Arauna al rey! También dijo Arauna al rey: ¡YHVH tu Dios te sea propicio! 24 Pero el rey dijo a Arauna: No, sino que ciertamente por precio te lo compraré, pues no elevaré holocaustos a YHVH mi Dios que no me cuesten nada. Así David compró la era y los bueyes por cincuenta siclos de plata. 25 Entonces David edificó allí un altar a YHVH, y elevó holocaustos y sacrificios de paz. Y YHVH se aplacó con la tierra, y cesó la plaga en Israel.
