Israel Demands a King

1 When Samuel became old, he made his sons judges over Israel. (De 16:18) 2 The name of his firstborn son was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judges in Beersheba. 3 Yet his sons did not walk in his ways but turned aside after gain. They took bribes and perverted justice. (Ex 18:21; Ex 23:8; De 16:19; Ps 15:5)

4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah (1Sa 7:17) 5 and said to him, “Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations.” (De 17:14; 1Sa 8:19; Ho 13:10; Ac 13:21)

6 But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” And Samuel prayed to the Lord. 7 And the Lord said to Samuel, “Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them. (Ex 16:8; 1Sa 10:19) 8 According to all the deeds that they have done, from the day I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are also doing to you. 9 Now then, obey their voice; only you shall solemnly warn them and show them the ways of the king who shall reign over them.” (1Sa 8:11)

Samuel’s Warning Against Kings

10 So Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking for a king from him. 11 He said, “These will be the ways of the king who will reign over you: he will take your sons and appoint them to his chariots and to be his horsemen and to run before his chariots. (De 17:16; 1Sa 10:25; 1Sa 14:52) 12 And he will appoint for himself commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and some to plow his ground and to reap his harvest, and to make his implements of war and the equipment of his chariots. (Ge 45:6) 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. 14 He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive orchards and give them to his servants. (1Ki 21:7; Eze 46:18) 15 He will take the tenth of your grain and of your vineyards and give it to his officers and to his servants. 16 He will take your male servants and female servants and the best of your young men^[1] and your donkeys, and put them to his work. 17 He will take the tenth of your flocks, and you shall be his slaves. 18 And in that day you will cry out because of your king, whom you have chosen for yourselves, but the Lord will not answer you in that day.” (Pr 1:28; Isa 1:15; Mic 3:4)

The Lord Grants Israel’s Request

19 But the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel. And they said, “No! But there shall be a king over us, 20 that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.” (1Sa 8:5) 21 And when Samuel had heard all the words of the people, he repeated them in the ears of the Lord. 22 And the Lord said to Samuel, “Obey their voice and make them a king.” Samuel then said to the men of Israel, “Go every man to his city.” (1Sa 8:7; Ho 13:11)

Israel pide un rey

1 Aconteció que cuando Samuel envejeció, puso a sus hijos por jueces sobre Israel. 2 El nombre de su hijo primogénito era Joel, y el nombre de su segundo, Abías, y eran jueces en Beerseba. 3 Pero sus hijos no anduvieron en los caminos de él, sino que se inclinaron a la ganancia deshonesta, y recibieron soborno, y pervirtieron la justicia. 4 Entonces todos los ancianos de Israel se reunieron y fueron a Samuel en Ramá, 5 y le dijeron: He aquí, tú has envejecido, y tus hijos no andan en tus caminos; ahora pues, constitúyenos un rey que nos juzgue, como tienen todas las naciones. 6 Pero fue desagradable a los ojos de Samuel que dijeran: Danos un rey que nos juzgue. Y Samuel oró a YHVH. 7 Y YHVH dijo a Samuel: Oye la voz del pueblo en todo lo que te digan, porque no te han rechazado a ti, sino que me han rechazado a mí, para que no reine sobre ellos. 8 Conforme a todas las obras que han hecho desde el día en que los hice subir de Egipto hasta este día, cuando me dejaron y sirvieron a otros dioses, así están haciendo contigo. 9 Ahora pues, atiende su voz; pero adviérteles solemnemente para que sepan el proceder del rey que ha de reinar sobre ellos. 10 Y Samuel refirió todas las palabras de YHVH al pueblo que había pedido rey, 11 diciendo: Este será el proceder del rey que reine sobre vosotros: Tomará vuestros hijos y los pondrá a su servicio para sus carros de guerra y su caballería, para que corran delante de su carruaje. 12 Y los designará como capitanes de millares y capitanes de cincuentena; y para arar sus campos, y para recoger su cosecha, y para hacer sus armas de guerra, y los pertrechos de sus carros de guerra. 13 Tomará a vuestras hijas para que sean perfumistas, y sean cocineras, y sean panaderas. 14 Y tomará vuestros campos, y vuestros viñedos, y vuestros mejores olivares, y los dará a sus siervos. 15 Y diezmará vuestras sementeras y vuestras viñas para darlas a sus eunucos y a sus servidores. 16 Y tomará vuestros siervos y vuestras siervas, y vuestros jóvenes más escogidos, y vuestros asnos, y los empleará en sus propias labores. 17 Diezmará vuestro rebaño, y vosotros mismos le seréis por siervos. 18 Y en aquel día clamaréis a causa de vuestro rey a quien os escogisteis, pero YHVH no os responderá en aquel día. 19 Pero el pueblo no quiso escuchar la voz de Samuel, sino que dijeron: ¡No! ¡Haya rey sobre nosotros! 20 Y seamos nosotros también como todas las naciones. Nuestro rey nos gobernará, y saldrá al frente de nosotros y peleará nuestras batallas. 21 Después que Samuel escuchó todas las palabras del pueblo, las repitió a oídos de YHVH. 22 Y YHVH dijo a Samuel: Escucha la voz de ellos, y haz que un rey reine sobre ellos. Entonces dijo Samuel a los hombres de Israel: Regrese cada uno a su ciudad.
