1Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king. (Jud 9:6; 2Ch 10:1)2And as soon as Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it (for he was still in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon), then Jeroboam returned from[1] Egypt. (1Ki 11:26; 1Ki 11:40)3And they sent and called him, and Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came and said to Rehoboam,4“Your father made our yoke heavy. Now therefore lighten the hard service of your father and his heavy yoke on us, and we will serve you.” (1Sa 8:11; 1Ki 4:7; 1Ki 4:22; 1Ki 9:15)5He said to them, “Go away for three days, then come again to me.” So the people went away. (1Ki 12:12)6Then King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he was yet alive, saying, “How do you advise me to answer this people?”7And they said to him, “If you will be a servant to this people today and serve them, and speak good words to them when you answer them, then they will be your servants forever.”8But he abandoned the counsel that the old men gave him and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him and stood before him.9And he said to them, “What do you advise that we answer this people who have said to me, ‘Lighten the yoke that your father put on us’?”10And the young men who had grown up with him said to him, “Thus shall you speak to this people who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you lighten it for us,’ thus shall you say to them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s thighs.11And now, whereas my father laid on you a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke. My father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.’” (1Ki 12:4)12So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king said, “Come to me again the third day.” (1Ki 12:5)13And the king answered the people harshly, and forsaking the counsel that the old men had given him,14he spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke. My father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.” (1Ki 12:4)15So the king did not listen to the people, for it was a turn of affairs brought about by the Lord that he might fulfill his word, which the Lord spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat. (1Ki 11:11; 1Ki 11:31; 1Ki 12:24)
The Kingdom Divided
16And when all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them, the people answered the king, “What portion do we have in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, O Israel! Look now to your own house, David.” So Israel went to their tents. (2Sa 20:1)17But Rehoboam reigned over the people of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah. (1Ki 11:13; 1Ki 11:36)18Then King Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was taskmaster over the forced labor, and all Israel stoned him to death with stones. And King Rehoboam hurried to mount his chariot to flee to Jerusalem. (1Ki 4:6; 1Ki 5:14)19So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day. (2Ki 17:21)20And when all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent and called him to the assembly and made him king over all Israel. There was none that followed the house of David but the tribe of Judah only. (1Ki 11:13; 1Ki 11:32; 1Ki 11:36)21When Rehoboam came to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin, 180,000 chosen warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to restore the kingdom to Rehoboam the son of Solomon. (2Ch 11:1)22But the word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God: (2Ch 12:5; 2Ch 12:7; 2Ch 12:15)23“Say to Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people, (1Ki 12:17)24‘Thus says the Lord, You shall not go up or fight against your relatives the people of Israel. Every man return to his home, for this thing is from me.’” So they listened to the word of the Lord and went home again, according to the word of the Lord. (1Ki 12:15)
Jeroboam’s Golden Calves
25Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim and lived there. And he went out from there and built Penuel. (Jud 8:17; Jud 9:45)26And Jeroboam said in his heart, “Now the kingdom will turn back to the house of David.27If this people go up to offer sacrifices in the temple of the Lord at Jerusalem, then the heart of this people will turn again to their lord, to Rehoboam king of Judah, and they will kill me and return to Rehoboam king of Judah.” (De 12:5)28So the king took counsel and made two calves of gold. And he said to the people, “You have gone up to Jerusalem long enough. Behold your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.” (Ex 32:4; Ex 32:8; 1Ki 14:9; 2Ki 10:29; 2Ki 17:16; 2Ch 11:15; 2Ch 13:8; Ho 8:5; Ho 10:5; Ho 13:2)29And he set one in Bethel, and the other he put in Dan.30Then this thing became a sin, for the people went as far as Dan to be before one.[2] (1Ki 13:34; 2Ki 17:21)31He also made temples on high places and appointed priests from among all the people, who were not of the Levites. (1Ki 13:32; 1Ki 13:33; 2Ki 17:32; 2Ch 11:14; 2Ch 13:9)32And Jeroboam appointed a feast on the fifteenth day of the eighth month like the feast that was in Judah, and he offered sacrifices on the altar. So he did in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves that he made. And he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places that he had made. (Le 23:33; Nu 29:12; 1Ki 13:2; Am 7:13)33He went up to the altar that he had made in Bethel on the fifteenth day in the eighth month, in the month that he had devised from his own heart. And he instituted a feast for the people of Israel and went up to the altar to make offerings. (1Ki 13:1)
1Roboam fue pues a Siquem, porque todo Israel se había convocado en Siquem para proclamarlo rey.2Y sucedió que cuando lo oyó Jeroboam ben Nabat (que aún estaba en Egipto, adonde había huido de la presencia del rey Salomón), y como Jeroboam habitaba en Egipto,3mandaron a llamarle, y Jeroboam llegó con toda la congregación de Israel para hablar a Roboam diciendo:4Tu padre agravó nuestro yugo. Ahora pues, haz que la dura servidumbre de tu padre, y el pesado yugo que nos impuso sea más llevadero, y te serviremos.5Él les dijo: ¡Volved a mí dentro de tres días! Y el pueblo se retiró.6Y el rey Roboam consultó a los ancianos que habían estado delante de la presencia de su padre Salomón, cuando aún vivía, diciendo: ¿Cómo aconsejáis que responda a este pueblo?7Y ellos le hablaron, diciendo: Si te constituyes hoy en servidor de este pueblo y les sirves, y les hablas buenas palabras, entonces serán tus siervos por siempre.8Pero él dejó de lado el consejo que le habían dado los ancianos y consultó a los jóvenes que habían crecido con él y estaban delante de su presencia.9Y les preguntó: ¿Qué aconsejáis vosotros que respondamos a este pueblo que me ha hablado diciendo: Alivia el yugo que tu padre impuso sobre nosotros?10Y los jóvenes que habían crecido con él le respondieron, diciendo: Así dirás a esta gente que ha hablado contigo diciendo: Tu padre hizo pesado nuestro yugo, pero tú, hazlo más llevadero; así les hablarás: Mi meñique es más grueso que los lomos de mi padre.11Y ahora, si mi padre os afligió con yugo pesado, yo lo haré más pesado aún. Mi padre os castigó con azotes, pero yo os castigaré con escorpiones.12Al tercer día vino Jeroboam con todo el pueblo a Roboam, como el rey había dispuesto, diciendo: Volved a mí al tercer día.13Entonces el rey respondió al pueblo de mal talante, y dejó de lado el consejo que le habían dado los ancianos.14Y les habló siguiendo el consejo de los jóvenes, diciendo: Mi padre hizo pesado vuestro yugo, pero yo lo haré más pesado aún. Mi padre os castigó con azotes, pero yo os castigaré con escorpiones.15Así el rey no hizo caso del pueblo, porque esto era un cambio de parte de YHVH, para que se cumpliera la palabra que había hablado por medio de Ahías silonita a Jeroboam ben Nabat.16Y cuando todo Israel vio que el rey no los había escuchado, el pueblo le respondió al rey, diciendo: ¿Qué parte tenemos en David? ¡No tenemos heredad con el hijo de Isaí! ¡Israel, a tus dioses! ¡Mira ahora, David, por tu propia casa! E Israel se retiró a sus tiendas.17Pero en cuanto a los hijos de Israel que habitaban en las ciudades de Judá, Roboam siguió reinando sobre ellos.18Después el rey Roboam envió a Adoram, que estaba a cargo del tributo, pero todo Israel lo apedreó con piedras, de tal modo que murió; y el mismo rey Roboam tuvo que apresurarse a subir en un carro para huir a Jerusalem.19Así se rebeló Israel contra la casa de David, hasta este día.20Aconteció que al oír todo Israel que Jeroboam había vuelto, lo mandaron a llamar ante la asamblea e hicieron que reinara sobre todo Israel. No quedó quien siguiese a la casa de David, excepto la tribu de Judá.21Y Roboam llegó a Jerusalem e hizo congregar de toda la casa de Judá y de la tribu de Benjamín a ciento ochenta mil guerreros escogidos para combatir contra la casa de Israel y devolver el reino a Roboam ben Salomón.22Pero la palabra de Dios llegó a Semaías, varón de Dios, diciendo:23Habla a Roboam ben Salomón, rey de Judá, y a toda la casa de Judá y de Benjamín, y al resto del pueblo, diciendo:24Así dice YHVH: No subiréis ni combatiréis contra vuestros hermanos, los hijos de Israel. Volveos, cada uno a su casa, porque de parte mía ha sucedido esto. Y ellos escucharon la palabra de YHVH y desistieron de ir, conforme a la palabra de YHVH.25Entonces Jeroboam reedificó Siquem, en la región montañosa de Efraín, y habitó en ella; y de allí fue y reedificó Penuel.26Pero Jeroboam decía en su corazón: Ahora volverá el reino a la casa de David.27Si este pueblo sube a ofrecer sacrificios en la Casa de YHVH en Jerusalem, el corazón de este pueblo se volverá a su señor, a Roboam rey de Judá; y me matarán, y se volverán a Roboam rey de Judá.28Y habiendo sido aconsejado, el rey hizo dos becerros de oro y les dijo: ¡Bastante habéis subido a Jerusalem! ¡He aquí tus dioses, oh Israel, los cuales te hicieron subir de la tierra de Egipto!29Y puso uno en Bet-’El y el otro lo colocó en Dan.30Y esto fue ocasión de pecado, porque el pueblo iba aun hasta Dan a postrarse.31También hizo templos en los lugares altos, e instituyó sacerdotes de entre la gente común, que no eran hijos de Leví.32Jeroboam estableció una solemnidad el día quince del mes octavo, semejante a la solemnidad que había en Judá, y subió al altar que había hecho en Bet-’El, para ofrecer sacrificios a los becerros que había preparado y ofrecer holocaustos sobre el altar. También estableció sacerdotes en Bet-’El para los lugares altos que había hecho.33Y el día quince del mes octavo, fecha que había ideado de su propio corazón, subió al altar que había hecho en Bet-’El, e instituyó una solemnidad para los hijos de Israel, y subió al altar para quemar incienso.
