David in His Old Age

1 Now King David was old and advanced in years. And although they covered him with clothes, he could not get warm. 2 Therefore his servants said to him, “Let a young woman be sought for my lord the king, and let her wait on the king and be in his service. Let her lie in your arms,^[1] that my lord the king may be warm.” 3 So they sought for a beautiful young woman throughout all the territory of Israel, and found Abishag the Shunammite, and brought her to the king. (Jos 19:18) 4 The young woman was very beautiful, and she was of service to the king and attended to him, but the king knew her not.

Adonijah Sets Himself Up as King

5 Now Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, “I will be king.” And he prepared for himself chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him. (2Sa 3:4; 2Sa 15:1) 6 His father had never at any time displeased him by asking, “Why have you done thus and so?” He was also a very handsome man, and he was born next after Absalom. (2Sa 3:3; 1Ch 3:2) 7 He conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest. And they followed Adonijah and helped him. (2Sa 2:13; 2Sa 2:18; 2Sa 20:25) 8 But Zadok the priest and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada and Nathan the prophet and Shimei and Rei and David’s mighty men were not with Adonijah. (2Sa 8:18; 2Sa 12:1; 2Sa 23:8; 1Ki 1:7; 1Ki 4:18)

9 Adonijah sacrificed sheep, oxen, and fattened cattle by the Serpent’s Stone, which is beside En-rogel, and he invited all his brothers, the king’s sons, and all the royal officials of Judah, (Jos 15:7; 2Sa 17:17) 10 but he did not invite Nathan the prophet or Benaiah or the mighty men or Solomon his brother. (2Sa 12:24)

Nathan and Bathsheba Before David

11 Then Nathan said to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, “Have you not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith has become king and David our lord does not know it? (1Ki 1:5) 12 Now therefore come, let me give you advice, that you may save your own life and the life of your son Solomon. 13 Go in at once to King David, and say to him, ‘Did you not, my lord the king, swear to your servant, saying, “Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne”? Why then is Adonijah king?’ (1Ki 1:30; 1Ch 22:9) 14 Then while you are still speaking with the king, I also will come in after you and confirm^[2] your words.” 15 So Bathsheba went to the king in his chamber (now the king was very old, and Abishag the Shunammite was attending to the king). 16 Bathsheba bowed and paid homage to the king, and the king said, “What do you desire?” 17 She said to him, “My lord, you swore to your servant by the Lord your God, saying, ‘Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne.’ (1Ki 1:13) 18 And now, behold, Adonijah is king, although you, my lord the king, do not know it. 19 He has sacrificed oxen, fattened cattle, and sheep in abundance, and has invited all the sons of the king, Abiathar the priest, and Joab the commander of the army, but Solomon your servant he has not invited. (1Ki 1:7; 1Ki 1:9; 1Ki 1:10) 20 And now, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are on you, to tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him. 21 Otherwise it will come to pass, when my lord the king sleeps with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon will be counted offenders.” (De 31:16; 2Sa 7:12; 1Ki 2:10) 22 While she was still speaking with the king, Nathan the prophet came in. 23 And they told the king, “Here is Nathan the prophet.” And when he came in before the king, he bowed before the king, with his face to the ground. 24 And Nathan said, “My lord the king, have you said, ‘Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne’? 25 For he has gone down this day and has sacrificed oxen, fattened cattle, and sheep in abundance, and has invited all the king’s sons, the commanders^[3] of the army, and Abiathar the priest. And behold, they are eating and drinking before him, and saying, ‘Long live King Adonijah!’ (1Sa 10:24; 1Ki 1:19) 26 But me, your servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and your servant Solomon he has not invited. (1Ki 1:8; 1Ki 1:10; 1Ki 1:32) 27 Has this thing been brought about by my lord the king and you have not told your servants who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?”

Solomon Anointed King

28 Then King David answered, “Call Bathsheba to me.” So she came into the king’s presence and stood before the king. 29 And the king swore, saying, “As the Lord lives, who has redeemed my soul out of every adversity, (Ru 3:13) 30 as I swore to you by the Lord, the God of Israel, saying, ‘Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne in my place,’ even so will I do this day.” (1Ki 1:13; 1Ki 1:17) 31 Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the ground and paid homage to the king and said, “May my lord King David live forever!” (Ne 2:3; Da 2:4; Da 3:9; Da 5:10; Da 6:6; Da 6:21)

32 King David said, “Call to me Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada.” So they came before the king. 33 And the king said to them, “Take with you the servants of your lord and have Solomon my son ride on my own mule, and bring him down to Gihon. 35 You shall then come up after him, and he shall come and sit on my throne, for he shall be king in my place. And I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and over Judah.” 36 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, “Amen! May the Lord, the God of my lord the king, say so. 37 As the Lord has been with my lord the king, even so may he be with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord King David.” (1Sa 20:13; 1Ki 1:47) 38 So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites went down and had Solomon ride on King David’s mule and brought him to Gihon. 40 And all the people went up after him, playing on pipes, and rejoicing with great joy, so that the earth was split by their noise. 41 Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard it as they finished feasting. And when Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, “What does this uproar in the city mean?” 42 While he was still speaking, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came. And Adonijah said, “Come in, for you are a worthy man and bring good news.” (2Sa 15:27; 2Sa 15:36; 2Sa 17:17; 2Sa 18:27)

43 Jonathan answered Adonijah, “No, for our lord King David has made Solomon king, 44 and the king has sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites. And they had him ride on the king’s mule. (1Ki 1:38) 45 And Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king at Gihon, and they have gone up from there rejoicing, so that the city is in an uproar. This is the noise that you have heard. (1Ki 1:33) 46 Solomon sits on the royal throne. (1Ch 29:23) 47 Moreover, the king’s servants came to congratulate our lord King David, saying, ‘May your God make the name of Solomon more famous than yours, and make his throne greater than your throne.’ And the king bowed himself on the bed. (Ge 47:31; 1Ki 1:37) 48 And the king also said, ‘Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who has granted someone^[4] to sit on my throne this day, my own eyes seeing it.’” (1Ki 3:6; Ps 132:11) 49 Then all the guests of Adonijah trembled and rose, and each went his own way. 50 And Adonijah feared Solomon. So he arose and went and took hold of the horns of the altar. (Ex 27:2; 1Ki 2:28) 51 Then it was told Solomon, “Behold, Adonijah fears King Solomon, for behold, he has laid hold of the horns of the altar, saying, ‘Let King Solomon swear to me first that he will not put his servant to death with the sword.’” 52 And Solomon said, “If he will show himself a worthy man, not one of his hairs shall fall to the earth, but if wickedness is found in him, he shall die.” (1Sa 14:45) 53 So King Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and paid homage to King Solomon, and Solomon said to him, “Go to your house.”

1 El rey David era ya anciano, avanzado en días, y lo cubrían con vestidos, pero no entraba en calor. 2 Por lo cual le dijeron sus siervos: Que busquen para mi señor el rey una joven virgen, y que ella esté delante del rey y sea una compañera para él, y que se recueste en tu seno, para que mi señor el rey pueda entrar en calor. 3 Buscaron pues una joven hermosa por todos los confines de Israel, y hallaron a Abisag sunamita, y la llevaron al rey. 4 Y la joven era muy hermosa, y se hizo compañera del rey y lo cuidaba, aunque el rey no la conoció. 5 Entonces Adonías, hijo de Haguit, se enalteció y dijo: ¡Yo reinaré! Y se preparó carros y jinetes, y cincuenta hombres que corrían delante de él. 6 Y su padre nunca lo había amonestado, diciéndole: ¿Por qué actúas así? Era además un hombre muy gallardo, y había nacido después de Absalón. 7 Y había consultado con Joab, hijo de Sarvia, y con el sacerdote Abiatar, y ellos, siguiendo a Adonías, lo ayudaron. 8 Pero el sacerdote Sadoc, y Benaías ben Joiada, y el profeta Natán, y Simei, y Rei, y los valientes que pertenecían a David, no estaban con Adonías. 9 Y Adonías sacrificó ovejas y novillos, y animales cebados junto a la piedra de Zohelet, que está cerca de En-Roguel, y llamó a todos sus hermanos, los hijos del rey, y a todos los hombres de Judá, siervos del rey, 10 pero no llamó al profeta Natán, ni a Benaías, ni a los valientes, ni a su hermano Salomón. 11 Entonces Natán habló a Betsabé, madre de Salomón, diciendo: ¿No has oído que Adonías, el hijo de Haguit, está reinando, y David nuestro señor no lo sabe? 12 Ahora pues, ven, te daré un consejo para que salves tu vida y la vida de tu hijo Salomón: 13 Ve y preséntate ante el rey David y dile: ¿No has jurado a tu sierva, oh rey señor mío, diciendo: Tu hijo Salomón reinará después de mí, y se sentará en mi trono? ¿Por qué entonces reina Adonías? 14 He aquí mientras tú aún estés allí hablando con el rey, yo entraré detrás de ti y confirmaré tus palabras. 15 Entonces Betsabé entró a la cámara del rey, quien a la sazón era muy anciano, y Abisag sunamita cuidaba al rey. 16 Y Betsabé se inclinó y se postró ante el rey, y el rey dijo: ¿Qué deseas? 17 Y ella le respondió: Señor mío, tú has jurado a tu sierva por YHVH tu Dios: Tu hijo Salomón reinará después de mí, y él se sentará en mi trono. 18 Pero ahora, he aquí que reina Adonías; y tú, mi señor el rey, no lo sabes. 19 Y él ha sacrificado bueyes y animales cebados y ovejas en abundancia, y ha llamado a todos los hijos del rey, y al sacerdote Abiatar y a Joab, general del ejército, pero a Salomón tu siervo él no lo llamó. 20 Y sobre ti, oh rey señor mío, están los ojos de todo Israel para que les declares quién se ha de sentar en el trono de mi señor el rey, después de él. 21 De otra manera, acontecerá que cuando mi señor el rey repose con sus padres, mi hijo Salomón y yo seremos tenidos como usurpadores. 22 Y he aquí, mientras ella todavía hablaba con el rey, llegó el profeta Natán. 23 E informaron al rey diciendo: He aquí el profeta Natán. Y él entró a la presencia del rey y se postró en tierra sobre su rostro ante el rey. 24 Y dijo Natán: Mi señor el rey, ¿has dicho acaso: Adonías reinará después de mí, y él se sentará en mi trono? 25 Porque él hoy ha bajado y sacrificado bueyes y animales cebados y ovejas en abundancia, y ha invitado a todos los hijos del rey, y a los capitanes del ejército y al sacerdote Abiatar; y he aquí que comen y beben a su salud, y han dicho: ¡Viva el rey Adonías! 26 Pero no me ha llamado a mí, tu siervo; ni al sacerdote Sadoc, ni a Benaías ben Joiada, ni a tu siervo Salomón. 27 ¿Ha sido hecho esto por mi señor el rey, sin informar a tus siervos quién había de sentarse en el trono de mi señor el rey después de él? 28 Entonces el rey David respondió diciendo: Llamadme a Betsabé; y ella entró a la presencia del rey y estuvo de pie ante el rey. 29 Y el rey juró y dijo: ¡Vive YHVH, que rescató mi alma de toda angustia, 30 que así como te he jurado por YHVH, el Dios de Israel, diciendo: Ciertamente tu hijo Salomón reinará después de mí, y él se sentará en mi trono en mi lugar, así lo haré hoy mismo! 31 Y Betsabé se inclinó con el rostro a tierra y se postró ante el rey, y dijo: ¡Viva mi señor el rey David para siempre! 32 Y el rey David dijo: ¡Llamadme al sacerdote Sadoc, al profeta Natán y a Benaías ben Joiada! Y ellos entraron a la presencia del rey. 33 Y el rey les dijo: Tomad con vosotros a los siervos de vuestro señor, y haced que mi hijo Salomón monte sobre mi propia mula, y hacedle bajar a Guijón. 34 Y el sacerdote Sadoc y el profeta Natán lo ungirán allí por rey sobre Israel, y daréis soplido al shofar, y gritaréis: ¡Viva el rey Salomón! 35 Enseguida subiréis tras él, y él vendrá y se sentará en mi trono, y reinará en mi lugar, pues lo he designado soberano sobre Israel y sobre Judá. 36 Y Benaías ben Joiada respondió al rey diciendo: ¡Amén! ¡Así lo confirme YHVH, Dios de mi señor el rey! 37 Así como ha estado YHVH con mi señor el rey, así esté Él con Salomón, y engrandezca su trono más que el trono de mi señor el rey David. 38 Y el sacerdote Sadoc, y el profeta Natán, y Benaías ben Joiada, junto con los cereteos y los peleteos, bajaron e hicieron montar a Salomón sobre la mula del rey David y lo condujeron a Guijón. 39 Entonces el sacerdote Sadoc tomó el cuerno de aceite del Tabernáculo y ungió a Salomón, y dieron soplido al shofar, y todo el pueblo exclamó: ¡Viva el rey Salomón! 40 Y todo el pueblo subió tras él, y el pueblo tocaba flautas y se regocijaba con tal regocijo, que parecía que la tierra se hundía con el clamor de ellos. 41 Y Adonías y todos los huéspedes que estaban con él oyeron eso cuando terminaron de comer. Y cuando Joab oyó el sonido del shofar, dijo: ¿Por qué hay tanto bullicio y tanto alboroto en la ciudad? 42 Mientras él aún hablaba, he aquí llegó Jonatán, el hijo del sacerdote Abiatar, y Adonías le dijo: Entra, porque eres hombre digno y traes buenas noticias. 43 Pero Jonatán respondió y dijo a Adonías: Al contrario, nuestro señor el rey David ha hecho rey a Salomón. 44 Y el rey ha enviado con él al sacerdote Sadoc, al profeta Natán, a Benaías ben Joiada, y a los cereteos y a los peleteos, y lo han hecho cabalgar sobre la mula del rey. 45 Y el sacerdote Sadoc y el profeta Natán lo han ungido por rey en Guijón, y han subido desde allí con gran regocijo, de modo que la ciudad está alborotada; ese es el bullicio que habéis oído. 46 Además, Salomón se ha sentado en el trono del reino, 47 y también los siervos del rey han llegado a bendecir a nuestro señor, el rey David, diciendo: ¡Tu Dios haga el nombre de Salomón más ilustre que tu nombre, y engrandezca su trono más que el tuyo! Y el mismo rey ha hecho reverencia sobre su lecho. 48 Y el rey también ha dicho así: ¡Bendito sea YHVH, Dios de Israel, que ha hecho que alguien se sentara en mi trono en este día, y que mis ojos lo hayan visto! 49 Entonces todos los huéspedes de Adonías se estremecieron, y se levantaron, y cada uno se fue por su camino. 50 Pero Adonías, tuvo temor de Salomón, y se levantó y fue a asirse de los cuernos del altar. 51 E informaron a Salomón diciendo: He aquí que Adonías teme al rey Salomón, porque se ha asido de los cuernos del altar, diciendo: ¡Júreme hoy el rey Salomón que no matará a su siervo con la espada! 52 Y Salomón dijo: Si él se llega a mostrar como un hombre digno, ni uno de sus cabellos caerá en tierra, pero si se halla maldad en él, entonces morirá. 53 El rey Salomón ordenó que lo hicieran bajar del altar, y él vino y se postró delante del rey Salomón; y Salomón le dijo: Vete a tu casa.
