1Again the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he incited David against them, saying, “Go, number Israel and Judah.” (1Ch 21:1; 1Ch 27:23)2So the king said to Joab, the commander of the army,[1] who was with him, “Go through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, and number the people, that I may know the number of the people.” (2Sa 3:10; 2Sa 24:15)3But Joab said to the king, “May the Lord your God add to the people a hundred times as many as they are, while the eyes of my lord the king still see it, but why does my lord the king delight in this thing?” (De 1:11)4But the king’s word prevailed against Joab and the commanders of the army. So Joab and the commanders of the army went out from the presence of the king to number the people of Israel.5They crossed the Jordan and began from Aroer,[2] and from the city that is in the middle of the valley, toward Gad and on to Jazer. (Nu 13:23; Nu 21:32; Nu 32:1; Nu 32:3; De 2:36; Jos 13:9; Jos 13:16)6Then they came to Gilead, and to Kadesh in the land of the Hittites;[3] and they came to Dan, and from Dan[4] they went around to Sidon, (Jos 19:28; Jud 18:28)7and came to the fortress of Tyre and to all the cities of the Hivites and Canaanites; and they went out to the Negeb of Judah at Beersheba. (Jos 11:3; Jud 3:3)8So when they had gone through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.9And Joab gave the sum of the numbering of the people to the king: in Israel there were 800,000 valiant men who drew the sword, and the men of Judah were 500,000. (Jud 8:10)
The Lord’s Judgment of David’s Sin
10But David’s heart struck him after he had numbered the people. And David said to the Lord, “I have sinned greatly in what I have done. But now, O Lord, please take away the iniquity of your servant, for I have done very foolishly.” (1Sa 13:13; 1Sa 24:5; 2Sa 12:13)11And when David arose in the morning, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying, (1Sa 9:9; 1Sa 22:5)12“Go and say to David, ‘Thus says the Lord, Three things I offer[5] you. Choose one of them, that I may do it to you.’”13So Gad came to David and told him, and said to him, “Shall three[6] years of famine come to you in your land? Or will you flee three months before your foes while they pursue you? Or shall there be three days’ pestilence in your land? Now consider, and decide what answer I shall return to him who sent me.” (1Ch 21:12)14Then David said to Gad, “I am in great distress. Let us fall into the hand of the Lord, for his mercy is great; but let me not fall into the hand of man.” (Ps 119:156)15So the Lord sent a pestilence on Israel from the morning until the appointed time. And there died of the people from Dan to Beersheba 70,000 men. (2Sa 24:2; 1Ch 27:24)16And when the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord relented from the calamity and said to the angel who was working destruction among the people, “It is enough; now stay your hand.” And the angel of the Lord was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. (Ge 6:6; Ex 12:13; Ex 12:23; 1Sa 15:11; 2Ki 19:35; 2Ch 3:1; 2Ch 32:21; Isa 37:36; Joe 2:13; Jon 3:10; Ac 12:23)17Then David spoke to the Lord when he saw the angel who was striking the people, and said, “Behold, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand be against me and against my father’s house.”
David Builds an Altar
18And Gad came that day to David and said to him, “Go up, raise an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.” (2Ch 3:1)19So David went up at Gad’s word, as the Lord commanded.20And when Araunah looked down, he saw the king and his servants coming on toward him. And Araunah went out and paid homage to the king with his face to the ground.21And Araunah said, “Why has my lord the king come to his servant?” David said, “To buy the threshing floor from you, in order to build an altar to the Lord, that the plague may be averted from the people.” (Nu 16:48; Nu 16:50)22Then Araunah said to David, “Let my lord the king take and offer up what seems good to him. Here are the oxen for the burnt offering and the threshing sledges and the yokes of the oxen for the wood. (1Ki 19:21)23All this, O king, Araunah gives to the king.” And Araunah said to the king, “May the Lord your God accept you.” (De 33:11; Ps 20:3)24But the king said to Araunah, “No, but I will buy it from you for a price. I will not offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God that cost me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels[7] of silver.25And David built there an altar to the Lord and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the Lord responded to the plea for the land, and the plague was averted from Israel. (2Sa 21:14)

David gjorde sig till ovän med folket genom att sätta i gång med en folkräkning.2Kungen sa till Joab och de andra officerarna: "Räkna allt folket, från Dan till Beer-Seba, från den ena ändan av landet till den andra, och mönstra de stridsdugliga så jag vet hur starka vi är."3Men Joab svarade: "Herren får gärna för mig öka vår stridskraft hundra gånger om och låta dig få uppleva det, men varför ska vi räkna folket?"4Kungen tystade emellertid Joabs invändningar, och Joab och de andra arméofficerarna gick ut för att verkställa befallningen.5De gick först över Jordan och slog läger söder om staden Aroer, som ligger mitt i Gads dal, nära Jaeser.6Sedan gick de till Gilead i Tatim-Hodsis land och till Dan-Jaan och runt mot Sidon.7Därefter gick de till Tyrus fästning och till hiveernas och kananeernas städer, och slutligen över till Juda och ända till Beer-Seba.8De genomkorsade alltså hela landet och slutförde sin uppgift på nio månader och tjugo dagar.9Joab rapporterade antalet stridsdugliga män till kungen, åttahundratusen i Israel och femhundratusen i Juda.
David accepterar Herrens straff
10Men efter det att räkningen av folket hade slutförts, började Davids samvete att oroa honom, och han sa till Herren: "Jag har handlat fel! Förlåt mig min dåraktighet!"11Nästa morgon gav Herren ett budskap till Gad, Davids profet, som han skulle meddela David. Herren sa:12"Säg till David att han får välja mellan tre saker."13Gad gick till David och sa: "Du har tre saker att välja på: tre års hungersnöd i landet, tre månaders flykt undan dina fiender, eller tre dagars pest! Tänk efter och låt mig veta vilket svar du tänker ge till Herren, som har sänt mig."14"Detta är ett svårt val", svarade David. "Men det är bättre att falla i Herrens hand än i människors."15Då sände Herren redan samma morgon en pest över Israel. Den varade i tre dagar, och sjuttio tusen av landets invånare dog.16Men när dödsängeln gjorde sig beredd att förgöra Jerusalem, ångrade Herren vad som hänt och bad honom sluta. Vid det tillfället stod ängeln vid jebuseen Araunas loge.17När David såg ängeln, sa han till Herren: "Det är ju jag som har syndat! Vad har mitt folk gjort? Låt din vrede komma över mig och min familj!"18Den dagen kom Gad till David och sa till honom: "Gå och bygg ett altare åt Herren vid jebuseen Araunas loge."19Då gick David ut för att göra som Herren hade befallt honom.20När Arauna såg kungen och hans män komma mot honom, gick han fram till dem och föll ner för dem med ansiktet mot jorden och frågade:21"Men varför har du kommit hit?"David svarade: "Jag har kommit hit för att köpa din loge, så att jag kan bygga ett altare där åt Herren, för att han ska stoppa pesten."22"Ta vad du behöver", sa Arauna då. "Här är boskap till brännoffret, och du kan använda tröskverktygen och oken som ved för att få en eld till altaret.23Jag vill ge dig alltsammans, och måtte Herren ta emot ditt offer!"24Men kungen sa till Arauna: "Nej, jag vill inte ha det som en gåva. Jag vill köpa det av dig, för jag vill inte offra ett brännoffer till Herren, min Gud, som inte har kostat mig något." David betalade femtio siklar silver till Arauna för logen och djuren.25Sedan byggde David ett altare där åt Herren och offrade brännoffer och fridsoffer. Herren svarade på hans bön, och pesten upphörde.
