The Last Words of David

1 Now these are the last words of David: The oracle of David, the son of Jesse, the oracle of the man who was raised on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, the sweet psalmist of Israel:^[1] (2Sa 7:8; 2Sa 22:51; Ps 78:70) 2 “The Spirit of the Lord speaks by me; his word is on my tongue. (2Pe 1:21) 3 The God of Israel has spoken; the Rock of Israel has said to me: When one rules justly over men, ruling in the fear of God, (Ex 18:21; 2Sa 22:2; 2Sa 22:32; 2Sa 22:47; 2Ch 19:7; 2Ch 19:9)

4 he dawns on them like the morning light, like the sun shining forth on a cloudless morning, like rain^[2] that makes grass to sprout from the earth. (Jud 5:31; Pr 4:18; Ho 6:5) 5 “For does not my house stand so with God? For he has made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things and secure. For will he not cause to prosper all my help and my desire? (2Sa 7:15; Ps 89:29; Isa 55:3) 6 But worthless men^[3] are all like thorns that are thrown away, for they cannot be taken with the hand; 7 but the man who touches them arms himself with iron and the shaft of a spear, and they are utterly consumed with fire.”^[4]

David’s Mighty Men

8 These are the names of the mighty men whom David had: Josheb-basshebeth a Tahchemonite; he was chief of the three.^[5] He wielded his spear^[6] against eight hundred whom he killed at one time. (1Ch 11:11; 1Ch 27:2) 9 And next to him among the three mighty men was Eleazar the son of Dodo, son of Ahohi. He was with David when they defied the Philistines who were gathered there for battle, and the men of Israel withdrew. (2Sa 23:28; 1Ch 27:4) 10 He rose and struck down the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand clung to the sword. And the Lord brought about a great victory that day, and the men returned after him only to strip the slain. 11 And next to him was Shammah, the son of Agee the Hararite. The Philistines gathered together at Lehi,^[7] where there was a plot of ground full of lentils, and the men fled from the Philistines. (2Sa 23:33) 12 But he took his stand in the midst of the plot and defended it and struck down the Philistines, and the Lord worked a great victory. 13 And three of the thirty chief men went down and came about harvest time to David at the cave of Adullam, when a band of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim. (1Sa 22:1; 2Sa 5:18) 14 David was then in the stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then at Bethlehem. (1Sa 13:23; 1Sa 22:4) 15 And David said longingly, “Oh, that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem that is by the gate!” 16 Then the three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate and carried and brought it to David. But he would not drink of it. He poured it out to the Lord 17 and said, “Far be it from me, O Lord, that I should do this. Shall I drink the blood of the men who went at the risk of their lives?” Therefore he would not drink it. These things the three mighty men did. (Le 17:10) 18 Now Abishai, the brother of Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was chief of the thirty.^[8] And he wielded his spear against three hundred men^[9] and killed them and won a name beside the three. 19 He was the most renowned of the thirty^[10] and became their commander, but he did not attain to the three. (1Ch 11:21) 20 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was a valiant man^[11] of Kabzeel, a doer of great deeds. He struck down two ariels^[12] of Moab. He also went down and struck down a lion in a pit on a day when snow had fallen. (Jos 15:21; 2Sa 8:18; 2Sa 20:23) 21 And he struck down an Egyptian, a handsome man. The Egyptian had a spear in his hand, but Benaiah went down to him with a staff and snatched the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with his own spear. 22 These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and won a name beside the three mighty men. 23 He was renowned among the thirty, but he did not attain to the three. And David set him over his bodyguard. 24 Asahel the brother of Joab was one of the thirty; Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem, (2Sa 2:18; 1Ch 27:7) 25 Shammah of Harod, Elika of Harod, (1Ch 11:27; 1Ch 27:8) 26 Helez the Paltite, Ira the son of Ikkesh of Tekoa, (2Sa 14:2) 27 Abiezer of Anathoth, Mebunnai the Hushathite, (Jos 21:18; 2Sa 21:18) 28 Zalmon the Ahohite, Maharai of Netophah, (2Sa 23:9; 2Ki 25:23) 29 Heleb the son of Baanah of Netophah, Ittai the son of Ribai of Gibeah of the people of Benjamin, (Jos 18:28; Jud 19:14; 2Sa 23:28) 30 Benaiah of Pirathon, Hiddai of the brooks of Gaash, (Jos 24:30; Jud 2:9; Jud 12:13; Jud 12:15; 1Ch 27:14)

1 Tato jsou pak poslední slova Davidova: Řekl David syn Izai, řekl, pravím, muž, kterýž jest velice zvýšený, pomazaný Boha Jákobova, a libý v zpěvích Izraelských: 2 Duch Hospodinův mluvil skrze mne, a řeč jeho jazykem mým vynesena. 3 Řekl mi Bůh Izraelský, mluvila skála Izraelská: Kdo panovati bude nad lidem, budeť spravedlivý, panující v bázni Boží. 4 Rovně jako bývá světlo jitřní, když slunce vychází ráno bez oblaků, a jako mocí tepla a deště roste bylina z země: 5 Tak zajisté dům můj před Bohem; nebo smlouvu věčnou učinil se mnou, kteráž všelijak upevněna a ostříhána bude. A toť jest všecko mé spasení a všeliká útěcha, že nic tak vzdělávati se nebude. 6 Bezbožní pak všickni vypléněni budou jako trní, kteréž rukou bráno nebývá. 7 Ale kdož by se ho chtěl dotknouti, vezme železo a žerď, aneb ohněm docela spálí je tu, kdež zrostlo. 8 Tato jsou jména nejudatnějších Davidových: Jošeb Bašebet Tachmonský, přední z vůdců, jehož rozkoš byla s kopím pojednou udeřiti na osm set ku pobití jich. 9 A po něm Eleazar syn Dodi, syna Achochi, mezi třmi silnými, kteříž byli s Davidem, když se opovážili proti Filistinským shromážděným tam k boji, když již byli odtáhli muži Izraelští. 10 Ten vstav, bil Filistinské, až ustala ruka jeho a ostála se při meči. V ten den zajisté učinil Hospodin vysvobození veliké, tak že se lid za ním navrátil, toliko aby kořisti vzebral. 11 Po něm pak byl Samma syn Age Hararský. Nebo když se byli shromáždili Filistinští v hromadu tu, kdež bylo díl rolí poseté šocovicí, a lid utekl před Filistinskými: 12 Tedy postavil se u prostřed dílu toho, a vysvobodil jej, a porazil Filistinské. I učinil Hospodin vysvobození veliké. 13 Sstoupili také ti tři z třidcíti předních, a přišli ve žni k Davidovi do jeskyně Adulam, když vojsko Filistinské leželo v údolí Refaim. 14 (Nebo David tehdáž byl v pevnosti své, a osazený lid Filistinských byl u Betléma.) 15 Zechtělo se pak Davidovi vody, a řekl: Ó by mi někdo dal píti vody z čisterny Betlémské, kteráž jest u brány! 16 A protož probivše se ti tři udatní skrze vojsko Filistinských, navážili vody z čisterny Betlémské, kteráž byla u brány, kterouž nesli a donesli k Davidovi. On pak nechtěl jí píti, ale obětoval ji Hospodinu, 17 A řekl: Nedejž mi toho, ó Hospodine, abych to učiniti měl. Zdaliž to není krev mužů těch, kteříž šli, opováživše se života svého? I nechtěl jí píti. To učinili ti tři silní. 18 Potom Abizai bratr Joábův, syn Sarvie, byl přední mezi třmi, kterýž pozdvihl kopí svého proti třem stům, kteréž i pobil, a byl z těch tří nejslovoutnější. 19 Z těch tří on jsa nejslavnější, byl knížetem jejich, a však oněm třem nebyl rovný. 20 Banaiáš také syn Joiadův, syn muže udatného, velikých činů, z Kabsael, ten porazil dva reky Moábské. Tentýž sstoupiv, zabil lva v jámě, když byl sníh. 21 Ten také zabil muže Egyptského, muže ku podivení, a měl Egyptský v rukou kopí. I šel k němu s holí, a vytrh kopí z ruky toho Egyptského, zabil ho kopím jeho. 22 To učinil Banaiáš syn Joiadův, kterýž také slovoutný byl mezi těmi třmi silnými. 23 A ač byl mezi třidcíti nejslavnější, však oněm třem se nevrovnal. I ustanovil ho David nad drabanty svými. 24 Azael také bratr Joábův byl mezi třidcíti těmito: Elchanan syn Dodův Betlémský, 25 Samma Charodský, Elika Charodský, 26 Chelez Faltický, Híra syn Ikeš Tekoitský, 27 Abiezer Anatotský, Mebunnai Chusatský, 28 Salmon Achochský, Maharai Netofatský, 29 Cheleb syn Baany Netofatský, Ittai syn Ribai z Gabaa synů Beniamin, 30 Banaiáš Faratonský, Haddai od potoku Gás, 31 Abialbon Arbatský, Azmavet Barechumský, 32 Eliachba Salbonský, z synů Jasen Jonata, 33 Samma Hararský, Achiam syn Sárar Ararský, 34 Elifelet syn Achasbai Machatského, Eliam syn Achitofelův Gilonský, 35 Chezrai Karmelský, Farai Arbitský, 36 Igal syn Nátanův z Soba, Báni Gádský, 37 Zelek Ammonský, Nacharai Berotský, oděnec Joába syna Sarvie, 38 Híra Itrejský, Gareb Itrejský, 39 Uriáš Hetejský.
