Ihr habt nichts[4], weil ihr nicht bittet; (Mt 7,7; 1Joh 3,15)3ihr bittet und empfangt nichts[5], weil ihr übel bittet, um es in euren Lüsten zu vergeuden. (Joh 9,31; 1Tim 2,8)4Ihr Ehebrecherinnen, wisst ihr nicht, dass die Freundschaft der Welt Feindschaft gegen Gott ist? Wer nun ein Freund der Welt sein will, erweist sich als Feind Gottes. (Mt 6,24; Röm 8,7; 1Joh 2,15)5Oder meint ihr, dass die Schrift umsonst[6] redet: »Eifersüchtig sehnt er sich nach dem Geist, den er in uns wohnen ließ[7]«[8]? (Jes 55,11)6Er gibt aber ⟨desto⟩ größere Gnade. Deshalb spricht er: »Gott widersteht den Hochmütigen, den Demütigen aber gibt er Gnade.« (Spr 3,34; 1Petr 5,5)7Unterwerft euch nun Gott! Widersteht aber dem Teufel! Und er wird von euch fliehen. (Mt 4,11; Eph 4,27; Eph 6,12; Hebr 12,9; 1Petr 5,9)8Naht euch Gott! Und er wird sich euch nahen. Säubert die Hände, ihr Sünder, und reinigt die Herzen, ihr Wankelmütigen[9]! (Ps 24,4; Ps 145,18; Jes 1,16; Jer 4,14; Sach 1,3)9Fühlt euer Elend und trauert und weint; euer Lachen verwandle sich in Traurigkeit und ⟨eure⟩ Freude in Niedergeschlagenheit! (Jes 22,12; Joe 2,12)10Demütigt euch vor dem Herrn! Und er wird euch erhöhen. (Mt 23,12)11Redet nicht schlecht übereinander, Brüder! Wer über einen Bruder schlecht redet oder seinen Bruder richtet, redet schlecht über das Gesetz und richtet das Gesetz. Wenn du aber das Gesetz richtest, so bist du nicht ein Täter des Gesetzes, sondern ein Richter. (3Mo 19,16; Röm 14,13)12Einer ist Gesetzgeber und Richter, der zu retten und zu verderben vermag. Du aber, wer bist du, der du den Nächsten richtest? (Jes 33,22; Mt 7,1; Lk 12,5; Röm 2,3)
Warnung vor Vertrauen auf irdische Güter
13Nun also, die ihr sagt: Heute oder morgen wollen wir in die und die Stadt gehen und dort ein Jahr zubringen und Handel treiben und Gewinn machen (Lk 12,18)14– die ihr nicht wisst, wie es morgen um euer Leben stehen wird; denn ihr seid ein Dampf, der eine kleine Zeit sichtbar ist und dann verschwindet –, (Ps 39,5; Ps 102,4; Spr 27,1; Lk 12,20)15statt dass ihr sagt: Wenn der Herr will, werden wir sowohl leben als auch[10] dieses oder jenes tun. (Apg 18,21)16Nun aber rühmt ihr euch in euren Großtuereien. Alles solches Rühmen ist böse. (1Kor 5,6; 1Kor 13,4; 1Joh 2,16)17Wer nun weiß, Gutes zu tun, und tut es nicht, dem ist es Sünde. (Lk 12,47)
1What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you?2You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God.3When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.4You adulterous people,[1] don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. (Hos 3,1)5Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us[2]?6But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: ‘God opposes the proud but shows favour to the humble.’ (Spr 3,34)7Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.8Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.9Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom.10Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.11Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister[3] or judges them speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it.12There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you – who are you to judge your neighbour?
Boasting about tomorrow
13Now listen, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.’14Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.15Instead, you ought to say, ‘If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.’16As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil.17If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.
