1Und der HERR sprach zu Josua: Fürchte dich nicht und erschrick nicht[1]! Nimm das ganze Kriegsvolk mit dir und mache dich auf, zieh hinauf nach Ai! Siehe, ich habe den König von Ai sowie sein Volk, seine Stadt und sein Land in deine Hand gegeben. (5Mo 7,18; Jos 1,9; Jos 6,2)2Du sollst mit Ai und seinem König das tun, was du mit Jericho und seinem König getan hast. Jedoch seine Beute und sein Vieh dürft ihr unter euch aufteilen[2]. Lege du der Stadt einen Hinterhalt von der Rückseite her! (5Mo 2,35; Jos 6,21; Jos 9,3; Jos 11,14)3Da machte sich Josua mit dem ganzen Kriegsvolk auf, um nach Ai hinaufzuziehen. Und Josua wählte 30 000 Mann, tüchtige Krieger, aus und sandte sie bei Nacht aus. (2Mo 17,9; Jos 10,7)4Er befahl ihnen: Seht, ihr sollt euch in den Hinterhalt legen, hinter der Stadt[3]! Entfernt euch nicht zu sehr von der Stadt, sondern seid alle bereit! (Ri 9,32; Ri 20,29)5Ich aber und das ganze Volk, das bei mir ist, wir wollen nahe an die Stadt heranrücken[4]. Und es soll geschehen, wenn sie herauskommen, uns entgegen, wie beim ersten Mal, so wollen wir vor ihnen fliehen.6Sie werden uns nachsetzen, bis wir sie von der Stadt abgeschnitten haben. Denn sie werden ⟨sich⟩ sagen: Sie fliehen vor uns wie beim ersten Mal! Wenn wir dann vor ihnen fliehen werden, (Ri 20,32)7dann sollt ihr euch aus dem Hinterhalt aufmachen und die Stadt einnehmen. Der HERR, euer Gott, wird sie in eure Hand geben.8Und es soll geschehen, wenn ihr die Stadt eingenommen habt, dann sollt ihr sie in Brand stecken[5]; nach dem Wort des HERRN sollt ihr ⟨es⟩ tun. Seht, ich habe es euch befohlen. –9Da schickte Josua sie los, und sie begaben sich in den Hinterhalt und blieben zwischen Bethel und Ai, westlich von Ai. Josua aber verbrachte jene Nacht mitten unter dem Volk[6].10Und Josua machte sich des Morgens früh auf und musterte das Volk. Dann zog er mit den Ältesten Israels vor dem Volk her nach Ai hinauf. (Jos 3,1)11Und alles Kriegsvolk, das bei ihm war, zog hinauf und rückte heran, und sie kamen vor die Stadt. Sie lagerten sich nördlich von Ai, sodass das Tal zwischen ihnen[7] und Ai war.12Er hatte aber etwa fünftausend Mann genommen und sie als Hinterhalt zwischen Bethel und Ai gelegt, westlich von der Stadt. (1Sam 15,5)13Und so stellten sie das Volk auf, das ganze Lager, das nördlich von der Stadt war, und sein Ende[8] westlich von der Stadt. Und Josua zog in dieser Nacht mitten in die Talebene.14Und es geschah, als der König von Ai es sah, da rückten die Männer der Stadt in aller Frühe eilends aus[9], Israel entgegen zum Kampf, er und sein ganzes Volk, zur Begegnung[10] vor der Steppe[11]. Er hatte aber nicht erkannt, dass ihm im Rücken der Stadt ein Hinterhalt ⟨gelegt war⟩. (Ri 20,34)15Josua und ganz Israel ließen sich nun von ihnen schlagen und flohen zur Wüste hin.16Da wurde das ganze Volk, das in der Stadt war, zusammengerufen, um ihnen nachzujagen. Und sie jagten Josua nach und wurden von der Stadt abgeschnitten.17Da blieb kein Mann in Ai und Bethel zurück, der nicht hinter Israel her ausgezogen wäre. Und sie ließen die Stadt offenstehen und jagten Israel nach. (Ri 20,31)18Da sprach der HERR zu Josua: Strecke das Kurzschwert, das in deiner Hand ist, gegen Ai aus; denn in deine Hand will ich es geben. Josua streckte das Kurzschwert, das in seiner Hand war, gegen die Stadt aus. (2Mo 8,1)19Der Hinterhalt aber hatte sich eilends aus seiner Stellung aufgemacht[12], und sie liefen, als er seine Hand ausstreckte. Und sie kamen zur Stadt, nahmen sie ein, und sie eilten und steckten sie in Brand[13].20Und die Männer von Ai wandten sich um und sahen, und siehe, der Rauch von der Stadt stieg zum Himmel auf. Da war in ihnen keine Kraft mehr zu fliehen, weder hierhin noch dorthin. Und das Volk, das ⟨bisher⟩ zur Wüste geflohen war, wandte sich ⟨nun⟩ um gegen den Verfolger. (Ri 20,40)21Denn als Josua und ganz Israel sahen, dass der Hinterhalt die Stadt eingenommen hatte und dass der Rauch der Stadt aufstieg, da kehrten sie um und schlugen die Männer von Ai.22Diese waren ja aus der Stadt ihnen entgegen ausgezogen, sodass sie ⟨nun⟩ mitten zwischen Israel waren, die einen ⟨kamen⟩ von hier und die andern von dort. Und sie erschlugen sie, bis ⟨von⟩ ihnen kein Entronnener oder Entkommener mehr übrig blieb. (Jos 6,21)23Den König von Ai hingegen ergriffen sie lebendig und brachten ihn zu Josua. (Jos 10,22)24Und es geschah, als Israel alle Bewohner von Ai auf dem Feld, in der Wüste, wohin sie ihnen nachgejagt waren, umgebracht hatte[14] und sie alle durch die Schärfe des Schwertes gefallen waren, bis sie vollständig aufgerieben waren, da kehrte ganz Israel um nach Ai, und sie schlugen es mit der Schärfe des Schwertes.25⟨Die Zahl⟩ aller Männer und Frauen, die an diesem Tag fielen, war zwölftausend, alle Leute von Ai.26Josua aber zog seine Hand, die er mit dem Kurzschwert ausgestreckt hatte, nicht zurück, bis er an allen Bewohnern von Ai den Bann vollstreckt hatte. (2Mo 17,12; 5Mo 2,34; Jos 9,3)27Nur das Vieh und die Beute dieser Stadt erbeutete Israel für sich, nach dem Wort des HERRN, das er dem Josua befohlen hatte.28Und Josua brannte Ai nieder und machte es zu einem ewigen Hügel der Öde, bis zum heutigen Tag. (5Mo 13,17)29Und den König von Ai ließ er an einen Baum[15] hängen bis zum Abend. Und bei Sonnenuntergang gab Josua Befehl, und sie nahmen seine Leiche vom Baum herunter und warfen sie an den Eingang des Stadttores und errichteten über ihr einen großen Steinhaufen, ⟨der⟩ bis zum heutigen Tag ⟨da ist⟩. (5Mo 21,22; Jos 7,26; Jos 10,26; Jos 12,9)
Altar auf dem Ebal – Gesetzessteine – Segen und Fluch
30Damals baute Josua dem HERRN, dem Gott Israels, einen Altar auf dem Berg Ebal, (1Mo 12,7)31wie Mose, der Knecht des HERRN, den Söhnen Israel geboten hatte, wie im Buch des Gesetzes des Mose geschrieben steht, einen Altar von unbehauenen Steinen, über denen man kein Eisen geschwungen hatte. Und sie brachten darauf dem HERRN Brandopfer dar und schlachteten Heilsopfer[16]. (2Mo 20,25; 5Mo 27,2)32Und er schrieb dort auf die Steine eine Abschrift des Gesetzes des Mose, die er vor den Söhnen Israel geschrieben hatte. (5Mo 27,2)33Und ganz Israel sowie seine Ältesten und Aufseher[17] und seine Richter standen an dieser und an jener ⟨Seite⟩ der Lade, den Priestern, den Leviten gegenüber, die die Lade des Bundes des HERRN trugen, der Fremde wie der Einheimische, die eine Hälfte gegen den Berg Garizim hin und die andere Hälfte gegen den Berg Ebal hin, wie Mose, der Knecht des HERRN, vormals geboten hatte, das Volk Israel zu segnen. (4Mo 15,15; 5Mo 11,29; 5Mo 31,12; Joh 4,20)34Danach las er alle Worte des Gesetzes, den Segen und den Fluch, ganz wie es im Buch des Gesetzes geschrieben steht. (5Mo 27,14; 5Mo 28,1; 5Mo 31,11)35Es war kein Wort von allem, was Mose geboten hatte, das Josua nicht der ganzen Versammlung Israels vorgelesen hätte, ebenso den Frauen, den Kindern und dem Fremden, der in ihrer Mitte lebte[18]. (5Mo 29,9; Neh 8,3; 1Thess 5,27)
1Then the LORD said to Joshua, ‘Do not be afraid. Do not lose hope. Go up and attack Ai. Take the whole army with you. I have handed the king of Ai over to you. I have given you his people, his city and his land.2Remember what you did to Jericho and its king. You will do the same thing to Ai and its king. But this time you can keep for yourselves the livestock and everything else you take from them. Have some of your fighting men hide behind the city and take them by surprise.’3So Joshua and the whole army moved out to attack Ai. He chose 30,000 of his best fighting men. He sent them out at night.4He gave them orders. He said, ‘Listen carefully to what I’m saying. You must hide behind the city. Don’t go very far away from it. All of you must be ready to attack it.5I and all those with me will march up to the city. The men of Ai will come out to fight against us, just as they did before. Then we’ll run away from them.6They’ll chase us until we’ve drawn them away from the city. They’ll say, “They are running away from us, just as they did before.” When we run away from them,7come out of your hiding place. Capture the city. The LORD your God will hand it over to you.8When you have taken it, set it on fire. Do what the LORD has commanded. Make sure you obey my orders.’9Then Joshua sent them away. They went to the place where they had planned to hide. They hid in a place west of Ai. It was between Bethel and Ai. But Joshua spent that night with his troops.10Early the next morning Joshua brought together his army. He and the leaders of Israel marched in front of them to Ai.11The whole army that was with him marched up to the city. They stopped in front of it. They set up camp north of Ai. There was a valley between them and the city.12Joshua had chosen about 5,000 soldiers. He had ordered them to hide in a place west of Ai. It was between Bethel and Ai.13The men took up their battle positions. All the men in the camp north of the city took up their positions. So did those who were supposed to hide west of the city. That night Joshua went into the valley.14The king of Ai saw what the troops with Joshua were doing. So the king and all his men hurried out of the city early in the morning. They marched out to meet Israel in battle. They went to a place that looked out over the Arabah Valley. The king didn’t know that some of Israel’s fighting men were hiding behind the city.15Joshua and all his men let the men of Ai drive them back. The Israelites ran away towards the desert.16All the men of Ai were called out to chase them. They chased Joshua. So they were drawn away from the city.17Not even one man remained in Ai or Bethel. All of them went out to chase Israel. When they did, they left the city wide open.18Then the LORD said to Joshua, ‘Hold out towards Ai the javelin that is in your hand. I will give the city to you.’ So Joshua held out towards the city the javelin in his hand.19As soon as he did, the men hiding behind the city got up quickly. They came out of their hiding places and rushed forward. They entered the city and captured it. They quickly set it on fire.20The men of Ai looked back. They saw smoke rising up from the city into the sky. But they couldn’t escape in any direction. The Israelites had been running away towards the desert. But now they turned around to face those chasing them.21Joshua and all his men saw that the men who had been hiding behind the city had captured it. They also saw that smoke was going up from it. So they turned around and attacked the men of Ai.22The men who had set Ai on fire came out of the city. They also fought against the men of Ai. So the men of Ai were caught in the middle. The army of Israel was on both sides of them. Israel struck them down. They didn’t let anyone remain alive or get away.23But they captured the king of Ai alive. They brought him to Joshua.24Israel finished killing all the men of Ai. They destroyed them in the fields and in the desert where they had chased them. They struck down every one of them with their swords. Then all the Israelites returned to Ai. And they killed those who were left in it.25The total number of men and women they killed that day was 12,000. The Israelites put to death all the people of Ai.26Joshua continued to hold out his javelin towards Ai. He didn’t lower his hand until he and his men had totally destroyed everyone who lived there.27But this time Israel kept for themselves the livestock and everything else they had taken from the city. The LORD had instructed Joshua to let them do it.28So Joshua burned down Ai. He tore it down so it could never be built again. It has been deserted to this very day.29Joshua killed the king of Ai. He stuck a pole through the body. Then he set it up where people could see it. He left it there until evening. At sunset, Joshua ordered his men to remove the body from the pole. He told them to throw the body down at the entrance of the city gate. They put a large pile of rocks over the body. That pile is still there to this day.
Joshua reads the Book of the Law to the people
30Joshua built an altar to honour the LORD, the God of Israel. He built it on Mount Ebal.31Moses, the servant of the LORD, had commanded the Israelites to do that. Joshua built the altar according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses. Joshua built the altar out of stones that iron tools had never touched. Then the people offered on the altar burnt offerings to the LORD. They also sacrificed friendship offerings on it.32Joshua copied the law of Moses on stones. He did it while all the Israelites were watching.33They were standing on both sides of the ark of the covenant of the LORD. All the Israelites, including outsiders and citizens, were there. Israel’s elders, officials and judges were also there. All of them faced the priests, who were Levites. They were carrying the ark. Half of the people stood in front of Mount Gerizim. The other half stood in front of Mount Ebal. Moses, the servant of the LORD, had earlier told them to do it. Moses told them to do it when he had given directions to bless the Israelites.34Then Joshua read all the words of the law out loud. He read the blessings and the curses. He read them just as they are written in the Book of the Law.35Joshua read every word Moses had commanded. He read them to the whole community of Israel. That included the women and children. It also included the outsiders living among them.
