1Und es geschah, als Adoni-Zedek, der König von Jerusalem, hörte, dass Josua Ai eingenommen und an ihm den Bann vollstreckt habe, dass er es mit Ai und seinem König ebenso gemacht habe, wie er es mit Jericho und seinem König gemacht hatte, und dass die Bewohner von Gibeon Frieden mit Israel gemacht hätten und in ihrer Mitte seien: (Jos 9,3; Jos 9,21)2Da fürchteten sie sich sehr. Denn Gibeon war eine große Stadt, wie eine der Königsstädte, ja, es war größer als Ai, und alle seine Männer waren Krieger. (5Mo 2,25; Jos 9,3; Jos 9,24)3Und Adoni-Zedek, der König von Jerusalem, sandte zu Hoham, dem König von Hebron, und zu Piram, dem König von Jarmut, und zu Jafia, dem König von Lachisch, und zu Debir, dem König von Eglon, und ließ ⟨ihnen⟩ sagen:4Kommt zu mir herauf und helft mir, dass wir Gibeon schlagen! Denn es hat mit Josua und mit den Söhnen Israel Frieden gemacht.5Da sammelten sich die fünf Könige der Amoriter und zogen hinauf: der König von Jerusalem, der König von Hebron, der König von Jarmut, der König von Lachisch, der König von Eglon, sie und alle ihre Heerlager; und sie belagerten Gibeon und kämpften gegen die Stadt[1]. (Jos 9,2)6Da sandten die Männer von Gibeon zu Josua ins Lager nach Gilgal und ließen sagen: Zieh deine Hände nicht ab von deinen Knechten! Komm eilends zu uns herauf und rette uns und hilf uns! Denn gegen uns haben sich versammelt alle Könige der Amoriter, die im Gebirge wohnen. (Jos 9,6; Jos 9,8)7Da zog Josua von Gilgal hinauf, er und alles Kriegsvolk mit ihm und alle tüchtigen Krieger. (Jos 8,3)8Und der HERR sprach zu Josua: Fürchte dich nicht vor ihnen! Denn in deine Hand habe ich sie gegeben; kein Mann von ihnen wird vor dir standhalten. (5Mo 3,2; 5Mo 20,1; Jos 1,5; Jos 1,9; Jos 11,6; Ri 4,14; Ri 6,16; 1Sam 17,47; 1Kön 20,13; Apg 18,9)9Und Josua kam plötzlich über sie. Die ganze Nacht war er von Gilgal hinaufgezogen. (Jos 11,7)10Der HERR aber verwirrte sie vor Israel. Und er fügte ihnen bei Gibeon eine schwere Niederlage zu[2] und jagte ihnen nach auf dem Weg zur Höhe[3] von Bet-Horon und schlug sie bis Aseka und bis Makkeda. (5Mo 7,23; Jos 15,35; Ri 4,15; Ri 5,20; 1Sam 7,10; 1Sam 13,18; 2Chr 25,13)11Und es geschah, als sie vor Israel flohen – sie waren ⟨gerade⟩ am Abhang von Bet-Horon –, da warf der HERR große Steine vom Himmel auf sie herab, bis Aseka, sodass sie umkamen. Es waren mehr, die durch die Hagelsteine umkamen, als ⟨die, welche⟩ die Söhne Israel mit dem Schwert umbrachten. (2Mo 9,22; 5Mo 20,4; Ri 5,20; Hi 38,23; Ps 18,13; Jes 28,21; Jes 30,30; Offb 16,21)12Damals redete Josua zum HERRN, ⟨und zwar⟩ an dem Tag, als der HERR die Amoriter vor den Söhnen Israel dahingab, und sagte vor den Augen Israels: Sonne, stehe still zu Gibeon, und Mond, im Tal Ajalon! (Jos 19,42; Jos 21,24; 1Sam 12,18; 1Sam 14,31; 1Chr 8,13; 2Chr 11,10)13Da stand die Sonne still, und der Mond blieb stehen, bis das Volk[4] sich an seinen Feinden gerächt hatte. Ist das nicht geschrieben im Buch Jaschar[5]? Die Sonne blieb stehen mitten am Himmel und beeilte sich nicht unterzugehen, ungefähr einen ganzen Tag lang. (2Sam 1,18; 2Kön 20,10; Hi 9,7; Hab 3,11)14Und es war kein Tag wie dieser, weder vorher noch danach, dass der HERR ⟨so⟩ auf die Stimme eines Menschen gehört hätte; denn der HERR kämpfte für Israel. (2Mo 14,14; Jos 10,42; Jos 23,3; Sach 14,3)15Dann kehrte Josua – und ganz Israel mit ihm – ins Lager nach Gilgal zurück. (Jos 10,43; 2Sam 12,31)16Jene fünf Könige aber flohen und versteckten sich in der Höhle zu Makkeda. (Ps 68,13)17Da wurde dem Josua mitgeteilt: Die fünf Könige sind gefunden worden, versteckt in der Höhle zu Makkeda.18Und Josua sagte: Wälzt große Steine an den Eingang der Höhle und stellt Männer an ihr auf, um sie zu bewachen!19Ihr aber, steht nicht still, ⟨sondern⟩ jagt euren Feinden nach und schlagt ihre Nachhut[6]! Lasst sie nicht in ihre Städte kommen! Denn der HERR, euer Gott, hat sie in eure Hand gegeben. (Jer 48,10)20Und es geschah, als Josua und die Söhne Israel ihnen endgültig eine sehr schwere Niederlage zugefügt hatten[7], bis sie vollständig aufgerieben waren – die Entronnenen von ihnen aber entkamen in die befestigten Städte[8] –, (Jos 11,8; 1Kön 20,21)21da kehrte das ganze Volk im Frieden zu Josua zurück, in das Lager nach Makkeda; niemand spitzte seine Zunge gegen die Söhne Israel. (2Mo 11,7)22Und Josua sprach: Öffnet den Eingang der Höhle und bringt diese fünf Könige aus der Höhle zu mir heraus! (Jos 8,23; 1Sam 15,32)23Sie taten es und brachten diese fünf Könige aus der Höhle zu ihm heraus: den König von Jerusalem, den König von Hebron, den König von Jarmut, den König von Lachisch, den König von Eglon. (Jos 12,10)24Und es geschah, als sie diese Könige zu Josua herausgebracht hatten, da rief Josua alle Männer von Israel ⟨zusammen⟩ und sagte zu den Anführern der Kriegsleute, die mit ihm zogen: Tretet heran, setzt eure Füße auf die Nacken dieser Könige! Da traten sie heran und setzten ihre Füße auf ihre Nacken. (2Sam 22,39; Mal 3,21)25Und Josua sagte zu ihnen: Fürchtet euch nicht und erschreckt nicht[9], seid stark und mutig! Denn genauso wird der HERR mit allen euren Feinden verfahren, gegen die ihr kämpft. (5Mo 7,19; Jos 1,6; 1Kor 16,13)26Danach erschlug Josua sie. Er tötete sie und hängte sie an fünf Bäumen[10] auf; und sie blieben an den Bäumen[11] aufgehängt bis zum Abend. (5Mo 21,23; Jos 8,29; Ri 8,21; Ps 18,41; Ps 149,7)27Und es geschah zur Zeit des Sonnenuntergangs, da gab Josua Befehl, und man nahm sie von den Bäumen[12] herab und warf sie in die Höhle, wo sie sich versteckt ⟨gehalten⟩ hatten. Und man legte große Steine vor den Eingang der Höhle, ⟨die noch⟩ bis zum heutigen Tag ⟨da sind⟩. (5Mo 21,23; Jos 8,29)28Und Josua nahm an demselben Tag Makkeda ein und schlug es mit der Schärfe des Schwertes. Und an seinem König, an der Stadt[13] und an allem Leben, das[14] in ihr war, vollstreckte er den Bann: Er ließ keinen Entronnenen übrig. Und er machte es mit dem König von Makkeda, wie er es mit dem König von Jericho gemacht hatte. – (Jos 9,3; Jos 12,15)29Dann zog Josua und ganz Israel mit ihm von Makkeda nach Libna und kämpfte gegen Libna. (Jos 12,15; Jos 21,13; 2Kön 19,8; 2Chr 21,10)30Und der HERR gab auch dies in die Hand Israels mitsamt seinem König. Und er schlug es[15] mit der Schärfe des Schwertes und alles Leben, das darin war[16]: Er ließ keinen Entronnenen darin übrig. Und er tat seinem König, wie er dem König von Jericho getan hatte. – (Jos 9,3; Jos 12,15)31Dann zog Josua und ganz Israel mit ihm von Libna nach Lachisch; und er belagerte es und kämpfte gegen es. (Jos 15,39; 2Kön 14,19; 2Chr 11,9)32Und der HERR gab Lachisch in die Hand Israels. Und er nahm es am zweiten Tag ein und schlug es mit der Schärfe des Schwertes und alles Leben, das darin war[17], genauso, wie er Libna getan hatte.33Damals zog Horam, der König von Geser, herauf, um Lachisch zu helfen. Aber Josua schlug ihn und sein Volk, sodass keiner entrinnen konnte[18]. – (Jos 12,12; Jos 21,21; 2Sam 5,25)34Dann zog Josua und ganz Israel mit ihm von Lachisch nach Eglon; und sie belagerten es und kämpften gegen es.35Und sie nahmen es an demselben Tag ein und schlugen es mit der Schärfe des Schwertes. Und an allem Leben, das darin war[19], vollstreckte er den Bann an demselben Tag, genauso, wie er es mit Lachisch gemacht hatte. –36Dann zog Josua und ganz Israel mit ihm von Eglon nach Hebron hinauf, und sie kämpften gegen es.37Und sie nahmen es ein und schlugen es mit der Schärfe des Schwertes mitsamt seinem König und allen seinen Städten[20] und allem Leben, das darin war[21]: Er ließ keinen Entronnenen übrig, genauso, wie er es mit Eglon gemacht hatte: Er vollstreckte den Bann an ihm und an allem Leben, das darin war[22]. –38Dann wandte sich Josua und ganz Israel mit ihm nach Debir und kämpfte gegen es. (Jos 21,15)39Und er nahm es ein mitsamt seinem König und allen seinen Städten[23]. Und sie schlugen sie mit der Schärfe des Schwertes und vollstreckten an allem Leben, das darin war[24], den Bann: Er ließ keinen Entronnenen übrig. Wie er es mit Hebron gemacht und wie er es mit Libna und seinem König gemacht hatte, ebenso machte er es ⟨auch⟩ mit Debir und seinem König. (Jos 12,13; 1Sam 15,3)40So schlug Josua das ganze Land, das Gebirge, das Südland[25], die Niederung[26], die Berghänge und all ihre Könige: Er ließ keinen Entronnenen übrig. An allem Lebenden[27] vollstreckte er den Bann, wie der HERR, der Gott Israels, geboten hatte. (2Mo 23,32; 4Mo 13,17; 5Mo 2,34; Jos 12,8; Neh 9,24)41Und Josua schlug sie von Kadesch-Barnea bis Gaza und das ganze Land Goschen bis Gibeon. (5Mo 1,19; 5Mo 2,23)42Und alle diese Könige sowie ihr Land nahm Josua auf einmal. Denn der HERR, der Gott Israels, kämpfte für Israel. (Jos 10,14)43Dann kehrte Josua und ganz Israel mit ihm ins Lager nach Gilgal zurück. (Jos 10,15)
1Adoni-Zedek was the king of Jerusalem. He heard that Joshua had captured Ai. He found out that the city had been set apart to the LORD in a special way to be destroyed. He heard that Joshua had done to Ai and its king the same thing he had done to Jericho and its king. Adoni-Zedek heard that the people of Gibeon had made a peace treaty with Israel. He also found out that they were living among the Israelites.2The things he heard alarmed him and his people very much. That’s because Gibeon was an important city. It was like one of the royal cities. It was larger than Ai. All its men were good soldiers.3So Adoni-Zedek, the king of Jerusalem, made an appeal to Hoham, the king of Hebron. He appealed to Piram, the king of Jarmuth. He appealed to Japhia, the king of Lachish. He also made an appeal to Debir, the king of Eglon.4‘Come up and help me attack Gibeon,’ he said. ‘Its people have made peace with Joshua and the Israelites.’5Then the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon gathered their armies together. Those five Amorite kings moved all their troops into position to fight against Gibeon. Then they attacked it.6Joshua was in the camp at Gilgal. The people of Gibeon sent a message to him there. They said, ‘Don’t desert us. We serve you. Come up to us quickly! Save us! Help us! All the Amorite kings from the central hill country have gathered their armies together to fight against us.’7So Joshua marched up from Gilgal with his whole army. The army included all his best fighting men.8The LORD said to Joshua, ‘Do not be afraid of them. I have handed them over to you. Not one of them will be able to fight against you and win.’9Joshua marched all night from Gilgal. He took the Amorite armies by surprise.10The LORD threw them into a panic as Israel marched towards them. Then Joshua and the Israelites won a complete victory over them at Gibeon. The Israelites chased them along the road that goes up to Beth Horon. They struck them down all the way to Azekah and Makkedah.11The Amorites tried to escape as Israel marched towards them. They ran down the road from Beth Horon to Azekah. Then the LORD threw large hailstones down on them. The hailstones killed more of them than the swords of the Israelites did.12So the LORD gave the Amorites over to Israel. On that day Joshua spoke to the LORD while the Israelites were listening. He said, ‘Sun, stand still over Gibeon. And you, moon, stand still over the Valley of Aijalon.’13So the sun stood still. The moon stopped. They didn’t move again until the nation won the battle over its enemies. You can read about it in the Book of Jashar. The sun stopped in the middle of the sky. It didn’t go down for about a full day.14There has never been a day like it before or since. It was a day when the LORD listened to a mere human being. Surely the LORD was fighting for Israel!15Joshua and his whole army returned to the camp at Gilgal.
Joshua kills the five Amorite kings
16The five Amorite kings had run away. They had hidden in the cave at Makkedah.17Joshua was told that the five kings had been found. He was also told that they were hiding in the cave at Makkedah.18He said, ‘Roll some large rocks up to the opening of the cave. Put some men there to guard it.19But keep on going! Chase your enemies! Attack them from behind. Don’t let them get back to their cities. The LORD your God has handed them over to you.’20So Joshua and the men of Israel had complete victory over them. They killed almost every one of them. But a few escaped. They went back to their cities that had high walls around them.21Then Israel’s whole army returned safely to Joshua. He was in the camp at Makkedah. No one in the land dared to say anything against the Israelites.22Joshua said, ‘Open up the cave. Bring those five kings out to me.’23So Joshua’s men brought the kings out of the cave. They were the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon.24The men brought them to Joshua. Then he sent for all the men of Israel. He spoke to the army commanders who had come with him. He said, ‘Come here. Put your feet on the necks of these kings.’ So they came forward and placed their feet on the necks of the kings.25Joshua said to them, ‘Don’t be afraid. Don’t lose hope. Be strong and brave. This is what the LORD will do to all the enemies you are going to fight.’26Joshua put the five kings to death. He stuck a pole through each of their bodies. Then he set the poles up where people could see the bodies. He left them there until evening.27At sunset Joshua ordered his men to take down the bodies. So they took them down from the poles and threw them into the cave where the kings had been hiding. They placed large rocks at the opening of the cave. And the rocks are still there to this day.
The campaign against the cities in the south
28That day Joshua captured Makkedah. He cut down its people and their king. He totally destroyed everyone in it. He didn’t leave anyone alive. He did to the king of Makkedah the same thing he had done to the king of Jericho.29Joshua moved on from Makkedah to Libnah. Israel’s whole army went with him. They attacked Libnah.30The LORD also handed that city and its king over to Israel. Joshua destroyed the city. He and his men killed everyone in it with their swords. He didn’t leave anyone alive there. He did to its king the same thing he had done to the king of Jericho.31Joshua moved on from Libnah to Lachish. Israel’s whole army went with him. The men took up their battle positions. Then Joshua attacked Lachish.32The LORD handed it over to Israel. Joshua captured the city on the second day of the battle. He destroyed the city. He and his men killed everyone in it with their swords. He had done the same thing to Libnah.33While all that was happening, Horam had come up to help Lachish. He was the king of Gezer. But Joshua won the battle over him and his army. No one was left alive.34Joshua moved on from Lachish to Eglon. Israel’s whole army went with him. They took up their battle positions. Then they attacked Eglon.35They captured it that same day. They totally destroyed everyone in it with their swords. They had done the same thing to Lachish.36Joshua went up from Eglon to Hebron. Israel’s whole army went with him. Then they attacked Hebron.37They captured the city. They destroyed it and its villages. They killed all its people and their king with their swords. They didn’t leave anyone alive. They totally destroyed the city and everyone in it. They had done the same thing at Eglon.38Joshua turned back and attacked Debir. Israel’s whole army went with him.39They captured the city, its king and its villages. They totally destroyed everyone in Debir with their swords. They didn’t leave anyone alive. They did to Debir and its king the same thing they had done to Libnah and its king. They had also done the same thing to Hebron.40So Joshua brought the whole area under his control. That included the central hill country and the Negev Desert. It included the western hills and the mountain slopes. It also included all the kings in that whole area. Joshua didn’t leave anyone alive. He totally destroyed everyone who breathed. He did just as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded.41Joshua brought everyone from Kadesh Barnea to Gaza under his control. He did the same thing to everyone from the whole area of Goshen to Gibeon.42He won the battle over all those kings and their lands. He did it in one campaign. That’s because the LORD, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.43Then Joshua returned to the camp at Gilgal. Israel’s whole army went with him.
