1Und Jerubbaal, das ist Gideon, und alles Volk, das bei ihm war, machten sich früh auf und lagerten sich an der Quelle Harod: Das Heerlager Midians aber war nördlich von ihm, am Hügel More[1], im Tal. (Ri 6,32; Ri 6,33; 1Sam 29,1; 2Sam 23,25)2Und der HERR sprach zu Gideon: Zu zahlreich ist das Volk, das bei dir ist, als dass ich Midian in ihre Hand geben könnte. Israel soll sich nicht gegen mich rühmen können und sagen: Meine Hand hat mich gerettet! (5Mo 8,17; Jes 10,13; 1Kor 1,29)3Und nun rufe doch vor den Ohren des Volkes aus: Wer furchtsam und verzagt ist, kehre um und wende sich zurück vom Gebirge Gilead! Da kehrten von dem Volk 22 000 ⟨Mann⟩ um, und 10 000 blieben übrig. (5Mo 20,8)4Und der HERR sprach zu Gideon: Noch ⟨immer⟩ ist das Volk zu zahlreich. Führe sie ans Wasser hinab, ich will sie dir dort läutern[2]! Und es soll geschehen, von wem ich dir sagen werde: Dieser soll mit dir gehen! – der soll mit dir gehen. Und jeder, von dem ich dir sagen werde: Dieser soll nicht mit dir gehen! – der soll nicht gehen. (Ps 33,16)5Da führte er das Volk ans Wasser hinab. Und der HERR sprach zu Gideon: Jeden, der mit seiner Zunge vom Wasser leckt, wie ein Hund leckt, den stelle gesondert für sich; und auch jeden, der sich auf seine Knie niederlässt, um zu trinken!6Und die Zahl derer, die leckten⟨, indem sie das Wasser⟩ mit ihrer Hand an ihren Mund ⟨brachten⟩, betrug dreihundert Mann; und der ganze Rest des Volkes hatte sich auf seine Knie niedergelassen, um Wasser zu trinken.7Da sprach der HERR zu Gideon: Mit den dreihundert Mann, die geleckt haben, will ich euch retten und Midian in deine Hand geben. Das ganze ⟨übrige⟩ Volk aber soll gehen, jeder an seinen Ort. (1Sam 14,6)8Und sie nahmen die Wegzehrung des ⟨übrigen⟩ Volkes an sich[3] und deren Hörner. So entließ er alle Männer von Israel, jeden in seine Zelte; aber die dreihundert Mann behielt er da. Das Heerlager Midians war aber unter ihm im Tal. (Ri 6,33)9Und es geschah in derselben Nacht, da sprach der HERR zu ihm: Mach dich auf, geh in das Heerlager hinab, denn ich habe es in deine Hand gegeben! (1Mo 46,2; Ri 3,28; Ri 4,14; 1Sam 23,4; Apg 18,9)10Und wenn du dich fürchtest hinabzugehen, dann geh du mit deinem Burschen Pura zum Heerlager hinab!11Da wirst du hören, was sie reden. Und danach werden deine Hände stark werden, sodass du in das Heerlager hinabgehen kannst. Da ging er hinab, er und sein Bursche Pura, ⟨bis⟩ in unmittelbare Nähe[4] der Gerüsteten, die im Heerlager waren.12Und Midian und Amalek und alle Söhne des Ostens waren in das Tal eingefallen wie die Heuschrecken an Menge. Zahllos waren ihre Kamele, wie der Sand, der am Ufer des Meeres ist, an Menge. (Jos 11,4; Ri 6,5; 1Sam 13,5; 1Kön 20,27)13Und als Gideon ankam, siehe, da erzählte ein Mann seinem Gefährten gerade einen Traum und sagte: Siehe, ich habe einen Traum gehabt. Und siehe, ein Laib Gerstenbrot rollte in das Heerlager Midians. Und es kam bis zum Zelt und schlug es nieder, dass es umfiel, und kehrte es um, ⟨das Unterste⟩ zuoberst, und das Zelt lag da. (Ri 8,10)14Da antwortete sein Gefährte und sagte: Das ist nichts anderes als das Schwert Gideons, des Sohnes des Joasch, des Mannes von Israel! Gott hat Midian und das ganze Heerlager in seine Hand gegeben! (Ri 3,28; 1Sam 14,12)15Und es geschah, als Gideon die Erzählung des Traumes und seine Deutung hörte, da betete er an[5]. Und er kehrte ins Heerlager Israels zurück und sagte: Macht euch auf! Denn der HERR hat das Heerlager Midians in eure Hand gegeben. (1Mo 24,26; Ri 3,28; 1Sam 1,28; 1Sam 14,12)16Und er teilte die dreihundert Mann in drei Abteilungen und gab ihnen allen Hörner in die Hand und leere Krüge, und in den Krügen waren Fackeln. (1Sam 11,11)17Und er sagte zu ihnen: Seht es mir ab und macht es ebenso! Siehe, wenn ich an den Rand des Heerlagers komme, dann soll es geschehen, dass ihr es ebenso macht, wie ich es mache!18Und stoße ich ins Horn, ich und alle, die bei mir sind, dann sollt auch ihr ins Horn stoßen rings um das ganze Heerlager und sollt rufen: Für den HERRN und für Gideon!19Und Gideon und die hundert Mann, die bei ihm waren, kamen an den Rand des Heerlagers, beim Beginn der mittleren Nachtwache; man hatte eben die Wachen aufgestellt. Und sie stießen in die Hörner und zerschmetterten die Krüge, die sie in der Hand hatten.20Da stießen ⟨auch⟩ die drei Abteilungen in die Hörner und zerbrachen die Krüge. Und sie ergriffen mit ihrer linken Hand die Fackeln und mit ihrer rechten Hand die Hörner zum Blasen und riefen: Schwert für den HERRN und für Gideon!21Und sie blieben stehen, jeder an seiner Stelle, rings um das Heerlager. Da lief das ganze Heerlager ⟨durcheinander⟩, und sie schrien laut und flohen. (2Kön 7,6; 2Chr 20,17)22Während nun die dreihundert ⟨Mann⟩ in die Hörner stießen, da richtete der HERR das Schwert des einen gegen den andern, und zwar im ganzen Heerlager. Und das Heerlager floh bis Bet-Schitta, nach Zereda[6] hin, bis an die Grenze von Abel-Mehola bei Tabbat. (Jos 3,16; Jos 6,16; 1Sam 14,20; 1Kön 4,12; 2Chr 20,23; Jes 9,3; Sach 14,13)23Und es wurden die Männer Israels zusammengerufen aus Naftali, aus Asser und aus ganz Manasse, und sie jagten Midian nach. (3Mo 26,7; 1Sam 14,21; 1Kön 20,20)24Und Gideon sandte Boten in das ganze Gebirge Ephraim und ⟨ließ⟩ sagen: Kommt herab, Midian entgegen! Und nehmt ihnen die Wasser⟨stellen⟩ bis Bet-Bara und den Jordan! Da wurden alle Männer Ephraims zusammengerufen, und sie nahmen ⟨ihnen⟩ die Wasser⟨stellen⟩ bis Bet-Bara und den Jordan. (Ri 3,27)25Und sie nahmen zwei Oberste von Midian, Oreb und Seeb, gefangen. Und sie erschlugen Oreb an dem Felsen Oreb, und Seeb erschlugen sie bei der Kelter Seeb; und sie jagten Midian nach. Und die Köpfe Orebs und Seebs brachten sie zu Gideon auf die andere Seite des Jordan. (Ri 8,3; Ps 83,10; Jes 10,26)
1Then Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) and all the people who were with him rose early and encamped beside the spring of Harod. And the camp of Midian was north of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley. (1Mo 12,6; 5Mo 11,30; Ri 6,32; 1Sam 29,1)2The LORD said to Gideon, “The people with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel boast over me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’ (5Mo 8,17; Jes 10,13)3Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return home and hurry away from Mount Gilead.’” Then 22,000 of the people returned, and 10,000 remained. (5Mo 20,8)4And the LORD said to Gideon, “The people are still too many. Take them down to the water, and I will test them for you there, and anyone of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ shall go with you, and anyone of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ shall not go.”5So he brought the people down to the water. And the LORD said to Gideon, “Every one who laps the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set by himself. Likewise, every one who kneels down to drink.”6And the number of those who lapped, putting their hands to their mouths, was 300 men, but all the rest of the people knelt down to drink water.7And the LORD said to Gideon, “With the 300 men who lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hand, and let all the others go every man to his home.” (1Sam 14,6; 2Chr 14,11)8So the people took provisions in their hands, and their trumpets. And he sent all the rest of Israel every man to his tent, but retained the 300 men. And the camp of Midian was below him in the valley. (Ri 7,1)9That same night the LORD said to him, “Arise, go down against the camp, for I have given it into your hand. (1Mo 46,2; 1Mo 46,3; Ri 3,28; 1Kön 3,5)10But if you are afraid to go down, go down to the camp with Purah your servant.11And you shall hear what they say, and afterward your hands shall be strengthened to go down against the camp.” Then he went down with Purah his servant to the outposts of the armed men who were in the camp. (Ri 7,13; 1Sam 14,9; 1Sam 14,10)12And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the people of the East lay along the valley like locusts in abundance, and their camels were without number, as the sand that is on the seashore in abundance. (Jos 11,4; Ri 6,3)13When Gideon came, behold, a man was telling a dream to his comrade. And he said, “Behold, I dreamed a dream, and behold, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian and came to the tent and struck it so that it fell and turned it upside down, so that the tent lay flat.”14And his comrade answered, “This is no other than the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel; God has given into his hand Midian and all the camp.”15As soon as Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, he worshiped. And he returned to the camp of Israel and said, “Arise, for the LORD has given the host of Midian into your hand.”16And he divided the 300 men into three companies and put trumpets into the hands of all of them and empty jars, with torches inside the jars. (1Mo 15,17; Ri 15,4)17And he said to them, “Look at me, and do likewise. When I come to the outskirts of the camp, do as I do.18When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then blow the trumpets also on every side of all the camp and shout, ‘For the LORD and for Gideon.’” (2Mo 14,13; 2Mo 14,14; 2Chr 20,17)
Gideon Defeats Midian
19So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outskirts of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, when they had just set the watch. And they blew the trumpets and smashed the jars that were in their hands.20Then the three companies blew the trumpets and broke the jars. They held in their left hands the torches, and in their right hands the trumpets to blow. And they cried out, “A sword for the LORD and for Gideon!” (Ri 7,18)21Every man stood in his place around the camp, and all the army ran. They cried out and fled. (2Kön 7,7)22When they blew the 300 trumpets, the LORD set every man’s sword against his comrade and against all the army. And the army fled as far as Beth-shittah toward Zererah,[1] as far as the border of Abel-meholah, by Tabbath. (Jos 6,4; Jos 6,16; Jos 6,20; 1Sam 14,20; 2Chr 20,23; Ps 83,9; Jes 9,4)23And the men of Israel were called out from Naphtali and from Asher and from all Manasseh, and they pursued after Midian.24Gideon sent messengers throughout all the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites and capture the waters against them, as far as Beth-barah, and also the Jordan.” So all the men of Ephraim were called out, and they captured the waters as far as Beth-barah, and also the Jordan. (Jos 24,33; Ri 3,28; Ri 6,35)25And they captured the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb. They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they killed at the winepress of Zeeb. Then they pursued Midian, and they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon across the Jordan. (Ri 8,3; Ri 8,4; Ps 83,11; Jes 10,26)
