1Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. (约1:11; 约6:4; 约12:1; 约12:23; 约13:3; 约13:34; 约16:28; 约17:6; 约17:9)2During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him, (约6:70; 约13:11; 约13:27; 徒5:3)3Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, (太11:27; 约8:42; 约14:12; 约16:28; 约17:2; 启2:27)4rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. (路22:27; 约21:7)5Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. (王下3:11)6He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?”7Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” (约12:16; 约13:12; 约13:36; 约15:15)8Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” (太16:22; 林前6:11; 弗5:26; 多3:5; 來10:22)9Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!”10Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet,[1] but is completely clean. And you[2] are clean, but not every one of you.” (创18:4; 约13:18; 约15:3)11For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.” (约2:24; 约6:64; 约13:2)12When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? (约13:4; 约13:7)13You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. (太23:8; 太23:10; 路6:46; 林前8:6; 林前12:3; 腓2:11)14If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. (提前5:10; 彼前5:5)15For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. (太11:29)16Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant[3] is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. (太10:24; 约15:20)17If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. (路11:28; 雅1:22)18I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled,[4] ‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ (诗41:9; 太1:22; 太26:23; 可3:13; 路6:13; 约6:70; 约13:10; 约13:26; 约15:16; 约15:19; 约17:12; 徒1:2)19I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. (约14:29; 约16:4)20Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.” (太10:40)
One of You Will Betray Me
21After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” (太26:21; 可14:18; 路22:21; 约12:27; 徒1:17)22The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. (路22:23)23One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table at Jesus’ side,[5] (路16:22; 约19:26; 约20:2; 约21:7; 约21:20)24so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus[6] of whom he was speaking.25So that disciple, leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” (可4:36; 约21:20)26Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. (得2:14; 太26:23; 太26:25; 可14:20; 约6:71)27Then after he had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.” (路12:50; 路22:3; 约13:2; 林前11:27)28Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him.29Some thought that, because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor. (约12:5; 约12:6; 约13:1)30So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. And it was night. (撒上28:8)
A New Commandment
31When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. (约7:39; 约14:13; 约15:8; 约17:1; 约17:4; 彼前4:11)32If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once. (约12:23; 约17:1; 约17:5)33Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ (约7:33; 约7:34; 约8:21)34A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. (利19:18; 约15:12; 约15:17; 羅13:8; 弗5:2; 西3:14; 帖前4:9; 提前1:5; 彼前1:22; 约一2:7; 约一3:11; 约一3:23; 约一4:10; 约一4:21; 约二1:5)35By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (约一3:14; 约一4:20)
Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial
36Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow afterward.” (约7:34; 约13:7; 约14:2; 约21:18; 彼后1:14)37Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” (太26:33; 可14:29; 路22:33)38Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times. (约18:27)
