— Úspěchy na jihu - Pět emorejských králů táhne proti Gibeónu, ale Jozue je porazí. Izrael obsazuje jih Kenaanu.

1 Adonísedek, král jeruzalémský, se doslechl, že Jozue dobyl Aj a zničil jej jako klatý – jako naložil s Jerichem a s jeho králem, tak naložil s Ajem a s jeho králem – a že obyvatelé Gibeónu uzavřeli s Izraelem mír a jsou nyní mezi nimi. 2 Tu se začali velmi bát, neboť Gibeón byl veliké město jako jedno z měst královských; byl větší než Aj a všichni jeho muži byli bohatýři. 3 Proto poslal Adonísedek, král jeruzalémský, vzkaz Hóhamovi, králi chebrónskému, Pirámovi, králi jarmútskému, Jafíovi, králi lakíšskému, a Debírovi, králi eglónskému: 4 „Přitáhněte mi na pomoc, ať porazíme Gibeón, neboť uzavřel mír s Jozuem a Izraelci!“ 5 Pět emorejských králů se tedy vydalo společně na pochod, králové jeruzalémský, chebrónský, jarmútský, lakíšský a eglónský, každý se svými šiky. Oblehli Gibeón a zahájili proti němu boj. 6 Gibeónští muži poslali k Jozuovi do tábora v Gilgálu s prosbou: „Nenechávej své otroky bez pomoci! Pospěš rychle k nám a zachraň nás. Pomoz nám, neboť se proti nám srotili všichni emorejští králové, kteří sídlí v pohoří.“ 7 I vytáhl Jozue z Gilgálu a s ním všechen bojeschopný lid, samí udatní bohatýři. 8 I řekl Hospodin Jozuovi: „Neboj se jich, neboť jsem ti je vydal do rukou. Žádný z nich před tebou neobstojí.“ 9 Jozue táhl z Gilgálu po celou noc a náhle je přepadl. 10 A Hospodin je před Izraelem uvedl ve zmatek. Připravil jim u Gibeónu zdrcující porážku. Pronásledoval je směrem k bétchorónskému svahu a pobíjel je až do Azeky a Makedy. 11 Když před Izraelem utíkali a byli na bétchorónské stráni, vrhal na ně Hospodin z nebe balvany až do Azeky; tak umírali. Těch, kteří zemřeli po kamenném krupobití, bylo více než těch, které Izraelci pobili mečem. 12 Tehdy mluvil Jozue k Hospodinu, v den, kdy Hospodin vydal Izraelcům Emorejce. Volal před očima Izraele: „Zmlkni, slunce, v Gibeónu, měsíci, v dolině Ajalónu.“ 13 A slunce zmlklo a měsíc stál, dokud lid nevykonal pomstu nad svými nepřáteli. To je zapsáno, jak známo, v Knize Přímého. Slunce stálo v polovině nebes a nepospíchalo k západu po celý den. 14 Nikdy předtím ani potom nebylo dne, jako byl onen, aby Hospodin tak vyslyšel něčí hlas, neboť Hospodin bojoval za Izraele. 15 Pak se Jozue spolu s celým Izraelem vrátili do Gilgálu do tábora. 16 Těch pět králů se však dalo na útěk a skrylo se v jeskyni u Makedy. 17 Jozuovi bylo oznámeno: „Našli jsme pět králů, ukrytých v jeskyni u Makedy.“ 18 Jozue řekl: „Přivalte balvany k otvoru jeskyně a postavte k ní několik mužů, aby krále střežili. 19 Vy však neustávejte a pronásledujte své nepřátele, přepadněte jejich zadní voj a nedovolte jim vejít do jejich měst, neboť Hospodin, váš Bůh, vám je vydal do rukou.“ 20 Jozue s Izraelci dovršil převelikou, zdrcující porážku nepřátel. Rozdrtil je. Ti, kteří z nich přece jen vyvázli, stáhli se do opevněných měst. 21 Všechen lid se vrátil pokojně k Jozuovi do tábora u Makedy. Nikdo se neodvážil proti Izraelcům hlesnout. 22 Jozue pak rozkázal: „Uvolněte otvor jeskyně a přiveďte ke mně z jeskyně těch pět králů!“ 23 Učinili tak a přivedli k němu z jeskyně těch pět králů: krále jeruzalémského, chebrónského, jarmútského, lakíšského a eglónského. 24 Když k němu tyto krále přivedli, svolal Jozue všechny izraelské muže a rozkázal velitelům bojovníků, kteří s ním táhli: „Přistupte a stoupněte svýma nohama na šíje těmto králům!“ Přistoupili a stoupli jim svýma nohama na šíje. 25 Pak jim Jozue řekl: „Nebojte se a neděste, buďte rozhodní a udatní, neboť právě tak naloží Hospodin se všemi vašimi nepřáteli, proti nimž bojujete.“ 26 Jozue je potom dal pobít a usmrtit a pověsit na pěti kůlech. Na kůlech zůstali viset až do večera. 27 Při západu slunce vydal Jozue rozkaz, aby je sňali z kůlů a vhodili do jeskyně, kde se skrývali. K otvoru jeskyně navršili balvany, které tam jsou až dodnes. 28 Onoho dne dobyl Jozue Makedu a vybil ji ostřím meče i s jejím králem. Vyhubil obyvatele jako klaté i vše živé v ní; nenechal nikoho vyváznout. Naložil s králem Makedy, jako naložil s králem jerišským. 29 Potom táhl Jozue spolu s celým Izraelem z Makedy do Libny a bojoval s Libnou. 30 I ji a jejího krále vydal Hospodin do rukou Izraele. Vybil ji ostřím meče i vše živé v ní; nenechal nikoho vyváznout. Naložil s jejím králem, jako naložil s králem jerišským. 31 Potom táhl Jozue spolu s celým Izraelem z Libny do Lakíše, oblehl jej a bojoval proti němu. 32 I vydal Hospodin Lakíš do rukou Izraele. Druhého dne jej dobyl, vybil jej ostřím meče i vše živé v něm, stejně jako naložil s Libnou. 33 Tehdy přitáhl Horám, král gezerský, Lakíši na pomoc. Ale Jozue pobil jej i jeho lid; nenechal nikoho vyváznout. 34 Potom táhl Jozue spolu s celým Izraelem z Lakíše do Eglónu. Oblehli jej a bojovali proti němu. 35 Dobyli jej onoho dne a vybili jej ostřím meče; vše živé v něm onoho dne vyhubil jako klaté, stejně jako naložil s Lakíšem. 36 Potom přitáhl Jozue spolu s celým Izraelem z Eglónu do Chebrónu a bojovali proti němu. 37 Dobyli jej a vybili ostřím meče, jeho krále, všechna jeho města i vše živé v něm; nenechal nikoho vyváznout, stejně jako naložil s Eglónem. Město a vše živé v něm vyhubil jako klaté. 38 Potom se Jozue obrátil spolu s celým Izraelem do Debíru a bojoval proti němu. 39 Dobyl jej a vybil jej ostřím meče, jeho krále i všechna jeho města, a vyhubili jako klaté vše živé v něm; nenechal nikoho vyváznout. Jako naložil s Chebrónem, tak naložil s Debírem a jeho králem, stejně jako naložil s Libnou a jejím králem. 40 Tak vybil Jozue celou zemi, pohoří i Negeb, Přímořskou nížinu i srázy, a všechny jejich krále. Nikoho nenechal vyváznout, vše, co dýchalo, vyhubil jako klaté, jak přikázal Hospodin, Bůh Izraele. 41 Jozue je vybil od Kádeš-barneje až ke Gáze, i celou zemi Gošen až po Gibeón. 42 Tak se zmocnil Jozue jedním rázem všech těchto králů a jejich zemí, neboť Hospodin, Bůh Izraele, bojoval za Izraele. 43 Pak se Jozue spolu s celým Izraelem navrátil do Gilgálu do tábora.

The Sun Stands Still

1 As soon as Adoni-zedek, king of Jerusalem, heard how Joshua had captured Ai and had devoted it to destruction,^[1] doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them, (Jz 6,21; Jz 6,24; Jz 8,22; Jz 8,26; Jz 9,15)

2 he^[2] feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men were warriors. (Dt 11,25) 3 So Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, to Piram king of Jarmuth, to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying, 4 “Come up to me and help me, and let us strike Gibeon. 11 And as they fled before Israel, while they were going down the ascent of Beth-horon, the Lord threw down large stones from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died. There were more who died because of the hailstones than the sons of Israel killed with the sword. (Jz 10,10; Ž 18,12; Iz 30,30; Zj 16,21)

12 At that time Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord gave the Amorites over to the sons of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, “Sun, stand still at Gibeon, and moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.” (Iz 28,21; Abk 3,11) 13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, until the nation took vengeance on their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jashar? The sun stopped in the midst of heaven and did not hurry to set for about a whole day. 14 There has been no day like it before or since, when the Lord heeded the voice of a man, for the Lord fought for Israel. 15 So Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal. (Jz 10,43)

Five Amorite Kings Executed

16 These five kings fled and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah. (Jz 10,10; Jz 10,28) 17 And it was told to Joshua, “The five kings have been found, hidden in the cave at Makkedah.” 18 And Joshua said, “Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave and set men by it to guard them, 19 but do not stay there yourselves. Pursue your enemies; attack their rear guard. Do not let them enter their cities, for the Lord your God has given them into your hand.” (Dt 25,18) 20 When Joshua and the sons of Israel had finished striking them with a great blow until they were wiped out, and when the remnant that remained of them had entered into the fortified cities, (Jz 8,24) 21 then all the people returned safe to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah. Not a man moved his tongue against any of the people of Israel. (Ex 11,7) 22 Then Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me from the cave.” 23 And they did so, and brought those five kings out to him from the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon. 24 And when they brought those kings out to Joshua, Joshua summoned all the men of Israel and said to the chiefs of the men of war who had gone with him, “Come near; put your feet on the necks of these kings.” Then they came near and put their feet on their necks. 25 And Joshua said to them, “Do not be afraid or dismayed; be strong and courageous. 26 And afterward Joshua struck them and put them to death, and he hanged them on five trees. And they hung on the trees until evening. (Jz 8,29) 27 But at the time of the going down of the sun, Joshua commanded, and they took them down from the trees and threw them into the cave where they had hidden themselves, and they set large stones against the mouth of the cave, which remain to this very day. (Dt 21,22) 28 As for Makkedah, Joshua captured it on that day and struck it, and its king, with the edge of the sword. He devoted to destruction every person in it; he left none remaining. Conquest of Southern Canaan

29 Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Makkedah to Libnah and fought against Libnah. (Jz 21,13) 30 And the Lord gave it also and its king into the hand of Israel. And he struck it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it; he left none remaining in it. And he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho. (Jz 10,28) 31 Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Libnah to Lachish and laid siege to it and fought against it. (Jz 10,3) 32 And the Lord gave Lachish into the hand of Israel, and he captured it on the second day and struck it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it, as he had done to Libnah. 33 Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish. And Joshua struck him and his people, until he left none remaining. (Jz 16,10; Sd 1,29; 1Kr 9,15) 34 Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Lachish to Eglon. And they struck them with the edge of the sword and devoted to destruction every person in it; he left none remaining. Just as he had done to Hebron and to Libnah and its king, so he did to Debir and to its king. 40 So Joshua struck the whole land, the hill country and the Negeb and the lowland and the slopes, and all their kings. He left none remaining, but devoted to destruction all that breathed, just as the Lord God of Israel commanded.
