— Díkůvzdání
3 Děkuji Bohu svému při každé vzpomínce na vás4 a v každé modlitbě za vás všechny s radostí prosím;5 jsem vděčen za vaši účast na díle evangelia od prvního dne až doposud6 a jsem si jist, že ten, který ve vás začal dobré dílo, dovede je až do dne Ježíše Krista.7 Vždyť právem tak smýšlím o vás všech, protože vás všechny mám v srdci jako spoluúčastníky milosti, i když jsem ve vězení, zodpovídám se před soudem a obhajuji evangelium.8 Bůh je mi svědkem, jak po vás všech vroucně toužím v Kristu Ježíši. 9 A za to se modlím, aby se vaše láska ještě víc a více rozhojňovala a s ní i poznání a hluboká vnímavost;10 abyste rozpoznali, na čem záleží, a byli ryzí a bezúhonní pro den Kristův,11 plní ovoce spravedlnosti, které z moci Ježíše Krista roste k slávě a chvále Boží.
— Osobní situace apoštolova
12 Rád bych, bratří, abyste věděli, že to, co mě potkalo, je spíše k prospěchu evangelia,13 takže po celém soudu i všude jinde je známo, že jsem vězněn pro Krista,14 a mnohé bratry právě mé okovy povzbudily, aby se spolehli na Pána a s větší smělostí mluvili beze strachu slovo Boží.15 Někteří sice kážou Krista také ze závisti a z řevnivosti, jiní však s dobrým úmyslem.16 Jedni z lásky, protože vědí, že jsem tu k obhajobě evangelia,17 druzí z touhy po uplatnění, ne z čistých pohnutek, a domnívají se, že mi v mém vězení způsobí bolest. 18 Ale co na tom! Jen když se jakýmkoli způsobem, ať s postranními úmysly, ať upřímně zvěstuje Kristus; z toho se raduji a budu radovat.19 Neboť vím, že se mi vše obrátí k dobrému vaší modlitbou a přispěním Ducha Ježíše Krista.20 Toužebně očekávám a doufám, že v ničem nebudu zahanben, ale veřejně a směle jako vždycky i nyní na mně bude oslaven Kristus, ať životem, ať smrtí. 21 Život, to je pro mne Kristus, a smrt je pro mne zisk.22 Mám-li žít v tomto těle, získám tím možnost další práce. Nevím tedy, co bych vyvolil,23 táhne mne to na obě strany: Toužím odejít a být s Kristem, což je jistě mnohem lepší;24 ale zůstat v tomto těle je zase potřebnější pro vás.25 Proto pevně spoléhám, že zůstanu a budu se všemi vámi k vašemu prospěchu a k radosti vaší víry,26 abyste se mohli mnou ještě více chlubit v Kristu Ježíši, když k vám opět přijdu.
— Napomenutí k věrnosti
27 Jenom veďte život hodný Kristova evangelia, abych viděl, až přijdu, nebo nepřijdu-li, abych slyšel, že zakotveni v jednom Duchu vedete jednou myslí zápas ve víře v evangelium28 a v ničem se nestrachujete protivníků. Jim je to předzvěst zahynutí, vám však spasení, a to od Boha.29 Neboť vám je z milosti dáno netoliko v Krista věřit, ale pro něho i trpět;30 vedete týž zápas, jaký jste u mne viděli a o jakém nyní slyšíte.

Thanksgiving and Prayer

The Advance of the Gospel
12I want you to know, brothers,[5] that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, (Fp 1,25; 1Tm 4,15)13so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard[6] and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ. (L 21,13; Sk 28,30; Sk 28,31; 2Tm 2,9)14And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word[7] without fear. (Sk 4,31)15Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from good will. (2K 11,13)16The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. (1K 9,17; Fp 1,7)17The former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely but thinking to afflict me in my imprisonment. (Fp 2,3; Jk 3,14)
To Live Is Christ
18What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice,19for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance, (Sk 16,7; 2K 1,11; Ga 3,5)20as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. (Jl 2,27; Sk 4,13; Ř 5,5; Ř 14,8; 1K 6,20; 2Tm 2,15)21For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. (Ga 2,20)22If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell.23I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. (J 12,26; 2K 5,8; 2Tm 4,6)24But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account.25Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith, (Sk 20,25; Ř 15,13; Fp 1,12; Fp 2,24)26so that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus, because of my coming to you again. (2K 1,14)27Only let your manner of life be worthy[8] of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, (1K 1,10; 1K 16,13; Ef 4,1; Fp 2,2; Fp 3,20; Ju 1,3)28and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God. (Sk 14,22; 2Te 1,5)29For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, (Mt 5,12; Fp 1,28)30engaged in the same conflict that you saw I had and now hear that I still have.
