— Spiknutí Šebovo - Šeba vybízející Izraele, aby odpadl od Davida, je krutě ztrestán. Jóab přitom odstraní i svého soka Amasu.

1 Tehdy se vyskytl ničemník jménem Šeba, syn Bichrího, benjamínského muže. Ten zatroubil na polnici a zvolal: „My nemáme podíl v Davidovi, nemáme dědictví v synu Jišajovu. Každý ke svým stanům, Izraeli!“ 2 Všichni izraelští muži přešli od Davida k Šebovi, synu Bichrího, ale judští muži, od Jordánu až k Jeruzalému, se přimkli ke svému králi. 3 David vešel do svého domu v Jeruzalémě. Král vzal deset žen, byly to ženiny zanechané, aby střežily dům, a dal je do střeženého domu; zaopatřil je, ale nevcházel k nim. Tak byly uzavřeny až do dne své smrti a žily jako vdovy. 4 Král poručil Amasovi: „Do tří dnů mi svolej judské muže. I ty se sem dostav.“ 5 Amasa šel Judu svolat, ale promeškal určenou lhůtu. 6 I řekl David Abíšajovi: „Šeba, syn Bichrího, nám teď bude škodit více než Abšalóm. Ihned vezmi služebníky svého pána a pronásleduj ho, aby si nenašel opevněná města a neunikl našim očím.“ 7 Za ním vytáhli Jóabovi muži, Keretejci a Peletejci i všichni bohatýři. Vytáhli z Jeruzaléma, aby pronásledovali Šebu, syna Bichrího. 8 Byli právě u velikého kamene, který je v Gibeónu, když k nim přišel Amasa. Jóab byl přepásán přes své odění a šat; měl pás s mečem v pochvě připnutý na bedrech; když vycházel, meč se povysunul. 9 Jóab Amasovi řekl: „Pokoj tobě, můj bratře!“ A pravou rukou vzal Jóab Amasu za bradu, aby ho políbil. 10 Amasa však přitom nedal pozor na meč v Jóabově ruce. Ten ho bodl pod žebra, takže mu vnitřnosti vyhřezly na zem; aniž mu dal druhou ránu, zemřel. Pak Jóab a jeho bratr Abíšaj pronásledovali Šebu, syna Bichrího. 11 Jeden z Jóabovy družiny stál nad Amasou a volal: „Kdo chce jít s Jóabem a kdo je Davidův, za Jóabem!“ 12 Amasa se válel v krvi uprostřed silnice. Když ten muž viděl, že se všechen lid zastavuje, odvlekl Amasu ze silnice do pole a hodil přes něj pokrývku; viděl totiž, že každý, kdo k němu přijde, zůstává stát. 13 Jakmile ho odklidil ze silnice, všichni muži táhli za Jóabem, aby pronásledovali Šebu, syna Bichrího. – 14 Ten prošel všemi izraelskými kmeny až do Ábelu a Bét-maaky; také všichni Bérejci se shromáždili a šli za ním. – 15 Jóabovi muži přišli a oblehli ho v Ábel-bét-maace. Zřídili proti městu násep a ten dosahoval k valu; všechen lid, který byl s Jóabem, se snažil strhnout hradby. 16 Tu jedna moudrá žena zavolala z města: „Slyšte, slyšte! Povězte prosím Jóabovi: Přistup sem a já k tobě promluvím.“ 17 Když se k ní přiblížil, žena se ho zeptala: „Ty jsi Jóab?“ Odpověděl: „Jsem.“ Řekla mu: „Vyslechni slova své otrokyně.“ Odvětil: „Poslouchám.“ 18 Pokračovala: „Kdysi se říkávalo: Je nutno doptat se v Ábelu a přesně tak to provést. 19 Jsme pokojné, věrné izraelské město. A ty usiluješ umořit město, matku v Izraeli. Proč chceš pohltit Hospodinovo dědictví?“ 20 Jóab odpověděl: „Toho jsem dalek, toho jsem dalek! Nechci je pohltit ani zničit. 21 Věc se má jinak. Muž z Efrajimského pohoří, jenž se jmenuje Šeba, syn Bichrího, pozdvihl ruku proti králi, proti Davidovi. Vydejte ho, jen jeho samotného, a já od města odtáhnu.“ Žena Jóabovi řekla: „Nuže, bude ti hozena přes hradby jeho hlava.“ 22 Pak šla ta žena se svou moudrou radou ke všemu lidu. Šebovi, synu Bichrího, uťali hlavu a hodili ji Jóabovi. Ten zatroubil na polnici a rozešli se od města, každý ke svým stanům. Jóab se vrátil do Jeruzaléma ke králi.

23 Jóab byl nad vším izraelským vojskem. Benajáš, syn Jójadův, byl nad Keretejci a Peletejci. 24 Adorám byl nad nucenými pracemi, Jóšafat, syn Achílúdův, byl kancléřem, 25 Šeja byl písařem, Sádok a Ebjátar kněžími. 26 Též Íra Jaírský byl Davidovým knězem.

The Rebellion of Sheba

1 Now there happened to be there a worthless man, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjaminite. And he blew the trumpet and said, “We have no portion in David, and we have no inheritance in the son of Jesse; every man to his tents, O Israel!” (Dt 13,13; 2S 19,43; 2S 20,22; 1Kr 12,16; 2Pa 10,16)

2 So all the men of Israel withdrew from David and followed Sheba the son of Bichri. But the men of Judah followed their king steadfastly from the Jordan to Jerusalem. 3 And David came to his house at Jerusalem. And the king took the ten concubines whom he had left to care for the house and put them in a house under guard and provided for them, but did not go in to them. So they were shut up until the day of their death, living as if in widowhood. (2S 15,16; 2S 16,21) 4 Then the king said to Amasa, “Call the men of Judah together to me within three days, and be here yourself.” (2S 17,25; 2S 19,13) 5 So Amasa went to summon Judah, but he delayed beyond the set time that had been appointed him. 6 And David said to Abishai, “Now Sheba the son of Bichri will do us more harm than Absalom. Now Joab was wearing a soldier’s garment, and over it was a belt with a sword in its sheath fastened on his thigh, and as he went forward it fell out. 9 And Joab said to Amasa, “Is it well with you, my brother?” And Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him. So Joab struck him with it in the stomach and spilled his entrails to the ground without striking a second blow, and he died. Then Joab and Abishai his brother pursued Sheba the son of Bichri. (2S 2,23; 1Kr 2,5) 11 And one of Joab’s young men took his stand by Amasa and said, “Whoever favors Joab, and whoever is for David, let him follow Joab.” 12 And Amasa lay wallowing in his blood in the highway. And anyone who came by, seeing him, stopped. And when the man saw that all the people stopped, he carried Amasa out of the highway into the field and threw a garment over him. 13 When he was taken out of the highway, all the people went on after Joab to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri. 14 And Sheba passed through all the tribes of Israel to Abel of Beth-maacah,^[2] and all the Bichrites^[3] assembled and followed him in. (Nu 21,16; 2Kr 15,29) 15 And all the men who were with Joab came and besieged him in Abel of Beth-maacah. 16 Then a wise woman called from the city, “Listen! Listen! Tell Joab, ‘Come here, that I may speak to you.’” 17 And he came near her, and the woman said, “Are you Joab?” He answered, “I am.” Then she said to him, “Listen to the words of your servant.” And he answered, “I am listening.” 18 Then she said, “They used to say in former times, ‘Let them but ask counsel at Abel,’ and so they settled a matter. (2S 20,14) 19 I am one of those who are peaceable and faithful in Israel. You seek to destroy a city that is a mother in Israel. Why will you swallow up the heritage of the Lord?” (1S 26,19; 2S 17,16) 20 Joab answered, “Far be it from me, far be it, that I should swallow up or destroy! (2S 20,19) 21 That is not true. But a man of the hill country of Ephraim, called Sheba the son of Bichri, has lifted up his hand against King David. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri and threw it out to Joab. So he blew the trumpet, and they dispersed from the city, every man to his home. And Joab returned to Jerusalem to the king.
