Хитростта и наказанието на жителите на Гаваон

1 Когато всички царе, които бяха на запад от Йордан, по планинската страна и равнината и по цялото крайбрежие на голямото море, към Ливан – хетейци, аморейци, ханаанци, ферезейци, евейци и йевусейци, – чуха това, 2 те се събраха заедно, за да се сражават с Иисус и израилтяните под едно командване. 3 Жителите на Гаваон чуха какво бе извършил Иисус в Йерихон и Гай 4 и постъпиха хитро. Те взеха провизии и се представиха за пратеници. Поставиха вехти чували на ослите си и вехти, скъсани и закърпени мехове за вино. 5 На краката им имаше стари, кърпени сандали и бяха облечени с кърпени дрехи. Всичкият им хляб за път беше сух, плесенясал^[1]. 6 Те дойдоха при Иисус в лагера в Галгал и казаха на него и на всички израилтяни: „Дойдохме от далечна земя. 8 Те казаха на Иисус: „Ние сме твои слуги.“ А Иисус ги попита: „Кои сте вие и откъде идвате?“ 9 Те му казаха: „Твоите слуги идват от твърде далечна земя заради името на Господа, твоя Бог. Затова цялата общност заропта против старейшините. 19 Всички старейшини казаха на целия народ: „Заклехме им се в Господа, Бога Израилев, и затова не можем да им сторим нищо. 20 Това можем да им направим: да ги оставим живи, за да не бъде върху нас Божият гняв поради клетвата, с която им се заклехме.“ 21 И старейшините им казаха още: „Нека останат живи, но ще станат секачи на дърва и носачи на вода за цялата общност.“ И те направиха, както старейшините им бяха казали. 22 Тогава Иисус ги повика и им каза: „Защо ни измамихте, като казахте: „Ние живеем много далече от вас“, когато сте живеели в пределите ни? 23 И сега вие сте проклети. 4 they on their part acted with cunning and went and made ready provisions and took worn-out sacks for their donkeys, and wineskins, worn-out and torn and mended, 5 with worn-out, patched sandals on their feet, and worn-out clothes. It was still warm when we took it from our houses as our food for the journey on the day we set out to come to you, but now, behold, it is dry and crumbly. 13 These wineskins were new when we filled them, and behold, they have burst. And these garments and sandals of ours are worn out from the very long journey.” 14 So the men took some of their provisions, but did not ask counsel from the Lord. 22 Joshua summoned them, and he said to them, “Why did you deceive us, saying, ‘We are very far from you,’ when you dwell among us?
