Pacto con Gabaón

1 Sucedió que cuando todos los reyes que estaban al otro lado del Jordán, en la serranía y en la planicie, y en toda la costa del Mar Grande frente al Líbano: el heteo, el amorreo, el cananeo, el ferezeo, el heveo, y el jebuseo supieron lo acontecido, 

2 se reunieron para luchar juntos contra Josué y contra Israel bajo un solo mando. 

3 Sin embargo, cuando los habitantes de Gabaón oyeron lo que Josué había hecho a Jericó y a Hai, 

4 ellos, al contrario, procedieron astutamente y fueron como embajadores, poniendo costales viejos sobre sus asnos, y odres de vino viejos, rotos y remendados, 

5 y sandalias viejas y recosidas en los pies, con vestidos viejos sobre sí, y todo el pan de su provisión seco y mohoso. 

6 Así llegaron al campamento en Gilgal ante Josué, y le dijeron a él y a los israelitas: Venimos de una tierra lejana; concertad ahora un pacto con nosotros. 

7 Pero los israelitas respondieron a aquellos heveos: Quizás vosotros habitáis en medio de nosotros, ¿cómo, pues, haremos alianza con vosotros? 

8 Y dijeron a Josué: Somos siervos tuyos. Entonces Josué les dijo: ¿Quiénes sois vosotros? ¿De dónde venís? 

9 A lo que ellos respondieron: De una tierra lejana tus siervos han venido por causa del nombre de YHVH tu Dios, pues hemos oído la fama de Él, y todo lo que Él hizo en Egipto. 

10 Y todo lo que Él hizo a los dos reyes de los amorreos que estaban allende el Jordán: a Sehón rey de Hesbón, y Og rey de Basán, que habitaba en Astarot. 

11 Por lo cual nuestros ancianos y todos los moradores de nuestra tierra nos hablaron, diciendo: Tomad en vuestras manos provisión para el camino, e id al encuentro de ellos, y decidles: Nosotros somos vuestros siervos, concertad ahora un pacto con nosotros. 

12 Este pan estaba caliente cuando lo tomamos de nuestras casas como provisión para el camino el día que salimos para venir a vosotros, pero ahora, helo aquí seco y mohoso. 

13 Y estos odres de vino los llenamos nuevos, y helos aquí rotos, y nuestros vestidos y nuestro calzado desgastado por lo largo del camino. 

14 Entonces los varones tomaron de sus provisiones, sin consultar la palabra de YHVH. 

15 Y Josué hizo paz con ellos, y concertó un pacto con ellos para dejarlos vivir, y los jefes de la comunidad les hicieron juramento. 

16 Y sucedió que al cabo de tres días después de haber concertado el pacto con ellos, oyeron decir que eran sus vecinos, y que habitaban en medio de ellos. 

17 Entonces los hijos de Israel levantaron el campamento, y al tercer día llegaron a las ciudades de aquéllos. Y sus ciudades eran Gabaón, Cafira, Beerot, y Quiriat-jearim. 

18 Y los hijos de Israel no los hirieron porque los jefes de la comunidad les habían hecho juramento por YHVH, Dios de Israel. Y toda la comunidad murmuró contra los jefes, 

19 pero todos los jefes respondieron a toda la comunidad: Hemos jurado por YHVH, Dios de Israel, por tanto, ahora no los podemos tocar. 

20 Esto haremos con ellos para dejarlos vivir, para que la ira no recaiga sobre nosotros a causa del juramento que les hicimos. 

21 Y los jefes dijeron con respecto a ellos: Dejadlos vivir. Y fueron leñadores y aguadores para toda la comunidad, según les habían prometido los jefes. 

22 Josué entonces los llamó y les habló, diciendo: ¿Por qué nos habéis engañado, diciendo: Habitamos muy lejos de vosotros, siendo que habitáis en medio de nosotros? 

23 Ahora pues, malditos sois, y nunca dejará de haber siervos entre vosotros, así como leñadores y aguadores para la Casa de mi Dios. 

24 Y ellos respondieron a Josué, y dijeron: Porque tus siervos fueron informados con precisión que YHVH tu Dios había ordenado a su siervo Moisés que os diera toda esta tierra, y destruyera a todos los habitantes de esta tierra ante vosotros. De manera que tuvimos temor en gran manera por nuestras vidas a causa de vosotros, y hemos hecho esto. 

25 Ahora pues, henos en tu mano. Haz con nosotros como te parezca bien y justo. 

26 Y él lo hizo así, y los libró de la mano de los hijos de Israel, para que no los mataran. 

27 Y aquel día Josué los designó como leñadores y aguadores para la comunidad y para el altar de YHVH hasta el día presente, en el lugar que Él habría de escoger.

King James Version

1 And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof ; 

2 That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord. 

3 And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai, 

4 They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up; 

5 And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy. 

6 And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us. 

7 And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you? 

8 And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye? 

9 And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt, 

10 And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth. 

11 Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us. 

12 This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy: 

13 And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey. 

14 And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD. 

15 And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them. 

16 And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them. 

17 And the children of Israel journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjathjearim. 

18 And the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes. 

19 But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them. 

20 This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them. 

21 And the princes said unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them. 

22 And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us? 

23 Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God. 

24 And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the LORD thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing. 

25 And now, behold, we are in thine hand: as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us, do. 

26 And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not. 

27 And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the LORD, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose.
